I went to samMobile firmware site and going to download, 4.0.3 ics or the GB firmware. I currently have ics 4.0.4 and my phone keeps going into SOD and i have to remove battery to turn back on, so can I flash with oldin one of the other version of firmware to downgrade to 4.0.3 ics without hurting my phone. as a noob and i have been trying to read posts. 4.0.3 befoore the upgate was running good.
You can flash the 4.0.3 UCLE5 from SamFirmware using odin. The file contains everything, including bootloaders I'm pretty sure, and is straight stock, not rooted. You will most likely need to perform a wipe data/factory reset, and there could be some risk involved due to the possible eMMC superbrick bug in the UCLE5 kernel.
Another possible route would be to flash UCLE5 plus root from the development section of this forum. It is a bit safer since the bootloader is removed. After that you should also install a custom kernel to get away from the stock kernel.

My understanding is that the sleep of death problem is a firmware issue in the 4.0.4 distribution. If that is the case, replacing hardware will not solve the problem. Or maybe your replacements have been for another reason? Anyway, I have never had stock 4.0.4 or stock 4.0.3 on my phone, but I am running a JB rom (SHOstock) and have never had the SOD issue.

Can anyone confirm if this process works coming from stock 4.0.4? I have a friend who asked me to root his device and I would hate for something to happen to someone else's phone. If it's my own, I would just not sleep all night until I've found a way to bring it back.

Just like anything else , it works the way it's supposed to if directions are followed and appropriate reading is done.

Hi all,
I read a while back that some of the leaked samsung roms were causing hard bricks after people flashed to something else after.
I've been running an older AOKP build from a while back and haven't flashed anything in a while, but I remember I did flash a few ICS TW roms, in particular ShoStock and PhoneBricker. Does anyone know if either of those ever used the base that was hard bricking people's phones.
Or for that matter, does anyone know in particular which leaks were causing the problem?

If I just decide to odin back to stock to be on the safe side, it should be no problem going back to a gingerbread tar from my current aokp ics right? Just checking.

The problem is the kernel, as long as you have the UCLE5 kernel (or any other variant) your risking a superbrick. Just flash a new kernel then move to whatever ROM you want or stay on the one you have as long as the kernel is compatible. I had the UCLE5 kernel installed and just flashed Siyah (first) and moved to the resurrection remix ROM.

No roms in this forum have the hard brick issue so it isn't necessary, only certain builds (such as ucle5) stock kernels trigger this, take out the kernel and it is fine.

Both Shostock and Phone Bricker are fine. Everything else is good too. All the ROMs that are based on it have already changed the kernel. Why not just update AOKP? If you have been using it for that long and like it.

I just rooted my ATT GS2 I777 phone using a method over at galaxys2root.com. i then installed the latest kernel 3.5.1 Sayah WITHOUT mic swap. Can someone please tell me the difference between WITH and WITHOUT mic swap and what it is exactly?
I'm looking for a rom to install now and seem to be having issues finding one that isn't based off the 9100 phone even though they are listed in the I777 forums. I would like to install Serendipity9 or Galaxy Nexus ROMs but not sure if I needed the 3.5.1 WITH mic swap rom or not.

With Without mike swap is for I777 stock roms and custom roms made from I777 stock as base, ie Semi. Mike swap is for roms made from I9100 base, or aosp roms.
It doesn't really matter though, because when you install a custom rom, it will also install the kernel that comes with the rom. If it doesn't come with your preferred kernel, then you can flash the kernel or your choice after you flash the rom of your choice.

I'm going to try to install Serendipity9 even though I can't find anything about the change log to see what kernel is included.

Yes. Fixed it, lol.
The kernel is CherryPicker. See here. I think it's been a while since the rom has been updated. I think Mikey is working on something else now.
I did get the Serendipity 9.4 installed and then ran Siyah 3.5.1 Kernel (with mic swap) and so far everything seems to be working ok.

I then Installed Serendipity 9.4 Rom from their official site.
I then Installed Siyah Kernel 3.5.1 from here.
I didn't want to brick my phone by rooting and there are a lot of methods to do so and a lot of old information out on the forums.
What is wrong with what I did?
I plan on going to Jellybean and the latest siyah when the time comes when more stable.

I'm asking (since they are telling me to get this **** off my phone) how to get it properly rooted and then go from there.
So if I just run Odin3 One-click Downloader I-777 UCKH7 Stock + Root No Bootloaders, that will properly put my phone back to factory + being rooted. Correct?
The only issue I have with my phone is it boots with an I9100 screen instead of the I777 screen. If I run the above with that properly show the I777 screen or not?
I'm guessing I have some bootloader on my phone since it is showing the I9100 screen??? That is why you guys are telling me to get that off there???

There's nothing wrong with what you did. You rooted your phone and installed a custom firmware without causing any problems. If you are satisfied with your phone as it is, do not flash back to stock just because of some of the posts here.
There are problems with GalaxyS2Root.com. Some of the files that are available there cause people to brick their phones, or have other problems. When the name comes up, people here react to it. That accounts for some of the posts here. But in your case, since you had no problems, and your custom flash went ok as well, not to worry.
Because you flashed a custom kernel using Odin when you rooted with the GalaxyS2Root method, you incremented the flash counter, which also causes the I9100 boot screen with the yellow warning triangle. That can be cleared with a USB jig, or with the application Triangle Away by codeworx which can be used only on ICS or above.

You did not flash I9100 bootloaders. Samsung was lazy, when they made the firmware for I777 they didn't update that image, so it still says I9100.
Oh, and I would suggest that you avoid GalaxyS2Root.com in the future for your own peace of mind.

Since my phone is already rooted I plan to just continue to use this site for ROMs and Kernels. I'm still learning.

Thanks but it was the other guys that had me worried as they said to get rid fo that immedately.
I would start over fresh if needed but it looks like I'm ok anyway. I'll move to Siyah 4.1.1( or later) and Jellybean at a later time when more stable I guess.
Ever since I upgraded from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, I have noticed that;
-typing with default keyboard is not as smoooth and responsive
-phone freezes keyboard & dialer(defaults)
Each time this happens, I have to wait till it respond or reboots or remove the battery. It's not that frequent but annoys me!
Anyone having similar issue with 4.0.4?
I hope you know about the emmc bug in 4.0.4. You should not do a factory reset, and you should avoid using recovery mode.
To solve your problem might need you to do one of those things i just told you not to do, hence you need to flash a 'safe' kernel using Odin before you can safely do any wiping. Siyah kernel for ics should be good.
If you did not know about the emmc bug then you need to find the thread by searching for "emmc brick bug"

4.0.4 makes me wanna throw my phone against the wall(OS rage!), as the causes of sudden freezing and rebooting are just meaningless. But I want to see how soon I will get those jelly beans, otherwise I plan on flashing a custom ROM.

What's your advice for this ROM's? Are they worthy to install them at this point in my device? Are they fully working with all the JB functions? Or at this point should I wait for the official ROM and give chance the community to work in ROM's based on it?

Well regardless of what above poster says, no they are not fully working. However the bugs that are present are not serious and most people will not come across them.
However I would HIGHLY recommend that if you flash the leaked stock rom or a custom one based on it you will need to flash Joboo kernel as it fixes the most annoying bug which is the lock screen delay which is really bloody annoying. It also increases battery life as Philz kernel is bad for this. You can also freeze non-needed stock apps to increase life more.
By the way incase you didnt know, since you have 4.0.4 stock you dont need to worry about the brick bug if you simply flash a custom kernel like Siyah instead of keeping stock.
Okay, they are not fully working I guess. I can always be wrong.

Yeah, actually I did know that I could flash Siyah to avoid the brick risk but I just wanted to do it all at the same time, I mean, root -> flash Siyah ->jump to another custom ROM. That's why my question about waiting for stock 4.1.2 for more stable ROM's before flashing and rooting :victory:

You dont need to "root" and then flash Siyah, Siyah gives you root.
If coming from stock rom/kernel all you need to do is....
Flashing custom rom:
Flash Siyah kernel via ODIN
Reboot into custom recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash rom zip (and gapps if using CM based rom)
Reboot device.
Note that flashing a custom rom will come with its own kernel so it replaces Siyah.
Flashing Stock Rom:
Flash stock rom via ODIN
Flash compatible custom kernel
Note: If you using leaked JB you should use nothing but the Joboo kernel. If flashing GB or ICS rom you should use Siyah.

Because I know the Siyah kernel, but I don't like it just because the Ying-yang symbol at booting process (That's really stupid) and I heard that the Jeboo Kernel leaves your phone with the triangle and without the possibility of booting the phone. Stuck at "Samsung Galaxy S2" and the triangle, so first of all... Is this true? (I mean the bug of the Jeboo Kernel)
And second, if it's true... Which kernel can I use?

Then you'll need to read each kernel forum with recent support for the i777 to determine which is best suited for your needs (stability, rom choice, vanity, whatever). A few big names around here are AJK, jeboo (which works fantastically for it's designed application), and STI.

One thing more. If I leave the phone with stock unrooted kernel and I do a Factory Reset, will the phone brick?
Because of the eMMC bug with stock unrooted kernel.

I'm pretty sure that stock 4.1.2 left the eMMC bug behind, the details are in creepyncrawly's repository. Creepyncrawly's signature is the best starting point for modding the I777.

To your initial question, there is nothing wrong with the Jebo kernel. It was, however, built specifically to go with the SHOstock3 rom. There are a variety of things that can cause the problem you stated. Flashing the wrong kernel for instance, as in flashing an ICS or Gingerbread kernel to a Jelly Bean system, will prevent the phone from booting. As far as the warning triangle at boot, that is caused by flashing a custom kernel using Odin or Heimdall. The screen can also be removed by flashing a stock kernel using Odin or Heimdall.
As far as the cap erase eMMC brick bug is concerned, that showed up in the ICS versions, and was possibly present in the 2.3.4 stock kernel. It may have been present also in the 2.3.6 stock kernel but there was never any direct evidence that it was. The 4.1.2 stock kernel is almost certainly safe. If it were my phone, I would not hesitate to perform a wipe data/factory reset with the 4.1.2 stock kernel.
