Updating "unofficial" ROM Builds - HTC One X+

Hey
Well here is the thing , developers keep updating their build right?
So whats the best way to keep updating to the latest ROM build without losing app data etc etc
As far as i know ROM Manager is not supported on the htc one x with TWRP , right?

Well i'm on the AOKP 4.2.1 and there is no OTA , manual is the only way i guess.
Do i wipe anything? because it'll be like "re-installing" on the current build to update.

The general rule is that there is no need to wipe unless the dev uses a newer base for the rom. Either way if the dev feels a wipe is necessary he should post it in the changelog for that particular version.
There are plenty of ways to backup your apps and data. Nandroid and titanium backup are the most popular.

[Q] Quick question regarding updating.

Dear reader,
I've currently been using Cyanomod for 2.3.7 Gingerbread.
My phone is rooted and everything (which took a little while )
Everything is running perfectly fine, but i would like to update my phone to android 4.0+ (whatever the lastest compatible version might be)
How should i go about this?
Do i basically uninstall everything and start from scratch or is there an easy method to quickly update my phone to android 4.
Kind Regards and Thank you for your time!
I believe the answer us first to backup your apps with titanium backup if you need them. Then go to recovery and backup your current Rom. (always be sure to do this). from recovery wipe factory reset and dalvik cache. Then install your new Rom from zip.
You cannot install an android 4.0 + over another version. Always backup and wipe.

Do i need to re-root my phone when i install a new Rom? Or should i just install it through recovery?
Rom's are pre rooted (expect stock, stock BASED roms ARE pre-rooted), once you've installed the rom through cwm, it will be rooted and ready.

If your bootloader is unlocked, you can easily flash a custom kernel (Based on ics, so it'll be compatible with ics rom) And boot into recovery, and flash a custom rom based on ics.
One last question, since i'm having trouble finding compatible roms.
Which one would any of you, recommend for me to use ?
I have a ST18i and i'd like the lastest compatible rom.
Thanks so much for the fast reponses and ofcourse the help.
Kind Regards,
Since you're using CyanogenMod 7 I would recommend you to use CyanogenMod 9.1 i.e. FXP 138 is the best in my experience.

If your finding trouble with compatible roms are you saying your getting bootloops when trying them?, because a different Android Version requires a different kernel, So if you haven't or forget to flash the kernel recommended or provided then that would possibly be where your compatibility issues lye as you will get bootloops if you don't and you are changing version. As Mikii suggested earlier.

Ahhh that must be it then.. I've been using the same kernel for quite some time now because it was quite a hassle to flash it. Different roms come with different kernels (at times). I'll have to figure out how to flash kernels again. Gonna check around the forums to see if i can find a suitable thread.
Thanks so much

When i look up Cyano 9.1 FXP 138, i get a list of downloads. FXP138-cm-9-20120916-UNOFFICIAL-haida.zip , FXP138-cm-9-20120916-UNOFFICIAL-mango.zip
What exactly are they and which one should i go for?

The fastest way to flash a kernel is to use the program called flashtool, click on the lightening bolt, select Fastboot mode, then select kernel to flash find the kernel you want to flash and it should be done within literally 2 seconds. once Flashtool gives you the all clear, disconnect your phone from usb, restart phone, and there you go, the old kernel will be overwritten, and so will that kernel's cwm version, with the one from the new kernel.
Try FXP138

new to the forum and device

Hi, just bought an og ,coming from HTC phone. There r some new things it looks like. What is a EFS ? Back up EFS partition ? I'm gonna used the my att og on straight talk , any things I should watch out for ? Should stay 100 % stock until service is activated? I'm looking for a near stock stable optimized rom, any to recommend ? Which kernel is good for it ? Htcs have hboot , it looks like lgs use different things , how do I go around flashing radios ? Excuse me for throwing out tons of noob questions , gonna start somewhere
0 help lol
Welcome. There is a zip file that you put on your external SD card somewhere in the optimus g forums that will backup your efs partition.
Edit: I found it for you if you haven't had any luck finding it. Also.. The efs supposedly holds your imei number and stuff.

Ic, so how would EFS be deleted ? always just had CDMA phones, never heard of ESNs deleted by mistake. Are radios to be flashed in recovery too ? My HTC flashes radios in fastboot.

It is real, there are a lot of hard bricks because of it, look in the Optimus 3D P920 forum, a lot people lost their IMEI and couldn't get it going. And yes, you can flash different radios

MysteryEmotion's eg8 ROM is the newest and may have the best chance of being actively maintained in the future. He also builds his own kernel with tweaks.
Ic, what version android is MysteryEmotion's eg8 ROM ? Has anyone tried houstonn's Stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean LG-E970 At&t ? I don't need the latest version android or anything , mostly seeking for stability and everything work.

Mystery's eg8 is based on 20j 4.1.2 stock with addons and enhancements. I think Houstonn's is a port from another OG that was released with jellybean before AT&T got the update.
Can you please clarify a bit? Do you mean stock LG or stock Google/Android.
Stock LG: Either go with MysteryEmotion's eg8 Or SnowJBLeaopard's SnowJB -almost forgot SlickRom, that is super debloated, but not really to my liking. (forgot who posted it)
Stock Google/Android: Either Shelnutt's Unofficial 10.1 Or houstonn's Vanilla Rootbox. The latter has a lot of "bells and whistles" while the former is basically stock. Also should mention TuxAttack's Beanstalk. Also a lot of bells and whistles though.

Personally I would go with dvhexers CM 10.1.2, and his included kernel is quite good. This is stock android/CM though, with a bit of searching and patience you can run LG Home on top of this, with the original weather/clock and calendar.
i.e.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198225
So then you have the best of both. Too many options for you not to get out there any try a few. But @dvhexers CM10.1 I think was perfectly stable.
I am using the JellyBean ROM. I have been on it for about a month now and haven't had any issues that wasn't caused by me
Though, other than that I suggest mysteryemotionz
okay, I'll probably go with ME eg8 and his V6.1 kernel for 4.1.2. just being on the safe side , should i flash a JB radio for this rom ? if yes, do i flash in RECOVERY ? i have found a radio called CWM-ATTJB-Radio, is this the right one ? I am being carefully about this because my HTC flash radios in Hboot with PG86IMG files... as far as flashing kernel, do u guys recommend flashing with Flash Image GUI for this phone ? and is wiping Dalvik always needed for flashing kernels for this phone ? i thanked everyone that helped.

Sorry, for some reason I called the ROM 'Beanstalk' Jellybean.
It was ported from the infuse 4G. I have tried just about every ROM and this one is my favorite.
Maybe it is just me, but again I haven't had any real issue with it. I did have a kernel crash from MysteryEmotionz kernel though. I then flashed Smoochas and all is good.
The crash occurred whenever I tried to run a QR code app. (any QR code app)

ME's eg8 is modified stock, it should come with his kernel already. Yes the radio's flash in CWM as zips, you can manually push with ADB/Fastboot commands, but why bother.
What are you referring to by "Flash image GUI" ? If you mean "clockwork mod recovery" or "TWRP" then yes. Once you download the freegee app from the market, it will give you the option for either, choose which ever you like more, personally I prefer CWM. Yes always wipe dalvik cache after you flash a kernel, so it can recreate the DEX files for that particular kernels methods of execution.

Flash image GUI is an image flashing app from the market. MiRaGe, known for his rom and kernel works for Optimus V and HTC Evo V 4G, recommends flashing his kernels with this app. I have been using it to flash kernels. So i was just wondering if this would work with kernels for this phone , i guess every phone is different.

I'm not familiar with those apps, and don't recall seeing them mentioned here at all. FWIW, I personally avoid any apps that flash things. They may make things convenient, but I've seen too many issues caused on too many devices by apps that flash stuff.
Just read the relevant threads to learn about what you are doing, and flash manually from recovery. That way, you're in control of what you're doing. Less chance of snafus caused by incompatibilities...
i am in complete stock . rg8 is 700 mb ?.... most roms i use for my HTC are around 150..
Thanks everyone for all the help. Now I'm running eg8 , everything seems fine execept the first time I took a picture had a very strange crash. The screen went blank and codes started rolling up the screen , it went on for about 3 minutes then phone restarted itself ...

[Q] Could you help me update my ROM?

I have an M7 HTC One Sprint that keeps bugging me to update it. I'm not sure how to safely do this without bricking it. It is encrypted and I cannot make backups using TWRP at present (I used to before it was encrypted).
Please can you suggest a good ROM or source for updating my phone/radio or whatever?
My current situation...
I have s-off and root
ROM is Stock w Goodies One 2.10
Android 4.3
Sense 5.0
Kernel 3.4.10-g18569d8
Baseband 1.00.20.0913_3
Build
3.04.651.2.CL251863
TWRP 2.6.3
It might work
Well if the update is official then it shouldn't have a problem.

Flashing CM after HTC's official 4.3 update.

I am having a really hard time with my evo lte!
Problem:
I had CM nighties running prior to downloading and using the official HTC RUU for sense 5 and android 4.3.
I ran the RUU and everything was fine, my antennas, bootloader, etc updated.
I decided to go back to CM so I rooted (attempted to later you will find out what went wrong) and installed CWM (latest one 6.0.4.6). I downloaded a cm rom and flashed it with the latest Gapps but every time I flash CM's nightly, it fails. I factory reset and rebooted and it asked me if I wanted to root? <--- think the problem is there... But anyway, I can flash Gapps fine but not CM's roms. I tried stable nightlies and different ones.
Any ideas?

You must flash a version with updated partition support as the 4.3 update changed everything. CM nightlies do not support this, they only work with those who have no updated to the new format that came with 4.3. You'll need to get a build with the support commit included. Fairly easy to do yourself if you have the time and storage on your hard drive.

If you want to flash nightlies, you will have to RUU back to an older version. You'll have to run the RUU and go through all the steps again, yes. An alternative is to use ROMs that have been updated to support the new partitions. I believe CaptainThrowback has a list in Android Development that lists all the builds that support. Not included in the list is Pac-Rom which can be found in Original Android Development.

[Q] Will CM work with new partitions post HTC RUU 2013

You guys have any idea if CM will start making nightlies and roms in general for Jewel post RUU that HTC officially launched for Android 4.3 and Sense 5?
I am aware that using the RUU on the device will update radios, bootloader, etc and partitions. The existing CMs (I have tried nightlies) don't flash because of different partitions.
GoblinZ, here on XDA, uploads the nightlies for CM with the modified partitions and this leads me to my second question. Every time I flash one of his roms of CM (unofficial) does that mean if I want to update then I need to factory reset and install rom from recovery? I cannot use the CM updater in the settings menu because it is unofficial right?
Whoever can help, thanks very much! I am new but feel welcome!

In order to go from that new format CM I built to an official cyanogenmod build on the old format, you would need an RUU to go back to the old format...this alone would require a clean flash (ie you would lose your data). I built this as a stop gap for people who would like to still use an updated CM on the new format.
