Root/Unroot Without Changing Kernels - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Simple way to root and unroot stock kernel without flashing insecure kernel.
Don't worry about custom counter and yellow triangle, with this method they never appear, because we only rooting, it's a rooting script not a custom kernel.
This rooting script included Busybox installer.
Rooting :
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted
Unroot :
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip
- SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard
Choose and Install SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Unrooted
Tested on latest stock Galaxy S II ICS rom.
Tested on latest Galaxy Note by some user (thanks for report)
Note: This method should work for other device with ICS rom, check CWM that compatible for your device.
You can download all the zip files from this thread. ROOT/UNROOT ZIP Files
If it helps than dont forgot to hit THANKS Button.
Thanks,

I don't think this thread is necessary, since the original one is still active and is being used by other members.

Exactly. Duplication. And if it belongs anywhere it belongs in General, not Q&A

yes best way to install cognition rom (because the rom is based on XWKE7)
1) flash stock XWKE7 rom with odin
2) flash CF root for XWKE7
3) download cognition rom 1.07 and put it on /sdcard/external sd-card
4) boot with 3 keys into CWMrecovery
5) choose cognition_s2_107.zip file on sdcard and flash this wonderful rom
so i have done

Questions, if you don't mind:
I rooted ages ago and apparently a lot has changed since then..new roms/kernels and other stuff.
First, I think 1) and 2) are understandable. Get 1) from Intratech's thread, flash with Odin. Get 2) from ChainFire's thread, flash with Odin. I can do this on my existing kernel, right? I have PDA: XWKE2
- Where do I get CWMrecovery from? It's not in the Market.
- How do I boot with three keys?
Everything in this section .

i assume since it is rooted that you already have clockwork recovery installed.
hold power and vol down to boot into recovery
select wipe cache/factory restore
select install from zip
select the rom i showed you
reboot!
you must put the rom in the root of your tab first
use androzip to move it there

sorry but still a newbie here and i might get annoying to some peeps here but just very cautious on how this would work. so i'm going to ask question
factory restore - does this mean i'm going a clean up and unrooting my device? from the steps above? is the end product going to have the touchwiz update or is this the touchwiz update with a email sync problem? where does the touchwiz update happen? i didn't see that step above?
lastly.. is there a video i watch to see this in action.
galaxytabhacks.com is a bit slow on updating their video's on how to update a rooted GT 10.1 with touchwiz update...
thank you all for the current post and i'm sure that there are many users here that will appreciate this information.. (for all you do please post and cheer on the peeps that helped us out).

ok.. so go to clockwork recovery - i know how with that two options (icons by pressing those buttons)
make a backup - don't know how?
factory reset - i'll read up
install zip from sdcard - done it before
install - if i find it i'll select install
reboot - hopefully
so how does the backup work - any steps.. where can i find that option. thanks again for all these information..
in the main clockword recovery menu select back up and restore ...select backup
these are all in the main menu of cwr... dont worry about the wipe/factory restore just select it and do it.....make sure you put the new rom in the root of your tab first. just like you did with the root.zip when you rooted
put the new rom zip in your tab
boot into cwr
make a back up
do a wipe/factory restore
select install from zip
select choose zip
select the rom zip you downloaded and put in the root of your tab
install
reboot
this is from the first link i gave you
Here is the clockwork mod menu
- Reboot system now (self explanatory )
- Apply update from SDcard. (when you connect your device to your computer it will show up as tablet. The SDcard that cwm refers to is simply your device storage. Always make sure to copy install.zips to the root directory of your tablet storage.) You use this when applying an update for a specific ROM if that is what the ROM developer says.
- Wipe Data/ Factory Reset You should always do this before you install a new ROM or if you are having minor issues with your device.
- Wipe cache partition Think of this as the lite version of whats above . If you do above though it doesn't hurt to do this too.
- Install zip from SDcard Use this to install new ROMs.
- Back up and Restore
- Mounts and Storage use this to connect your device to your computer when in recovery mode. It is also possible to transfer files to your device while in this mode.
- Advanced What you are interested in here is something called dalvik cache, you want to wipe this too before installing any new ROM
- Power off
this is the main menu of clockwork recovery
backupand restore...wipedata/factory reset...install zip reboot are all on this menu

Need some help as well.
My io tab went into that infinity loop so I flash it by fast boot, but then accidentally rooted it? i guess, as I see the superuser icon.
How do I get it back to stock. I have no backup with it at all....and don't know what is happening.
I just want a normal machine that can update to touchwiz officially. thanks

So I Rooted, How do I flash a rom?

Hi, I just rooted my SGS2, and now I want to flash MIUI Rom. I have a couple of questions.
1. Do I NEED a micro SD card to do this.
2. Is is safe to download Rom Manager and flash Clockwork mod?
Search is your friend.
you could have just answered my question.
Anyone just want to verify if it's safe for me to flash CWM from Rom Manager app?
I happen to be on KH3 if that matters. (flashed KH3 before rooting) used DooMLorDs script to root.
1. no, you copy the rom to the phones internal memory
2. no, flash a cf-root kernel

If I've already rooted using DoomLords exploit is is okay to flash Cf-Root over that?
Also, how come every bit of research says that I can't flash a rom from internal storage - but you say I can? Don't I have to Wipe Data/etc? Wouldn't that delete anything on the internal storage.
You can use your usb internal storage to flash a rom.
Also, note that cf-root recovery is not the original cwm recovery. It's modified.
You can flash any other kernel with cwm recovery if you want. (codeworkx/siyah/ninphetamine/speedmod, etc)
And, ROM manager flashing cwm is actually fake. Our GS2 can get cwm recovery only by flashing a kernel that has cwm.

The 16gb's of memory on the phone is basically split into two parts, around 3gb's or so is used/available for the os while the rest 12gb is available to you to do as you wish, that's where you're copying the files to.
If you do a wipe from cwm it only deletes the files from the 3gb section while leaving the 12gb portion intact.
If you install titanium backup you'll see this info at the bottom in the overview section, you'll see the system rom/internal/sdcard partitions.
Okay let's do this!
You said you had a rooted device, so here's all the steps:
1. FLASH A KERNEL THAT IS CAPABLE OF HAVING A CWM RECOVERY, e.g. Ninphetamine
2. Go to Market and download ROM manager
3. Launch ROM manager and then click Flash Recovery, I suggest twice just in case
4. From this website, download MIUI for your device: http://miuiandroid.com/roms/miui-development-roms/
5. After you finish downloading, make sure you have your device in Debugging mode in Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Debugging Mode, plug your device in, and drag down the notification bar, click on the USB popup, and click Connect.
6. Drag the file into the internal SD card (should have files and folders like update.zip, gameloft, android, etc), then unplug the device.
7. Power down the device and then use the button combo: Power + Vol Up + Home to enter recovery, if it fails to enter CWM Recovery, power down and try again.
8. Click Wipe Data, Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik Cache (this is in Advanced) after that, click on the power button to go back a menu
8. Click Install .zip from sdcard and then navigate to the .zip file you placed in your internal sdcard
9. I suggest installing it twice just to be sure.
Hope this helps
If you haven't rooted, just use odin to flash a rooted kernel (like cf-root, ninphetamine, Siyahkernel, speedmod, etc). Most of them come with cwm, where you can flash any other rooted kernel as you desire (in recovery mode or through the CWM app).
If you've already rooted but the kernel you root your phone with doesn't come with cwm, do the same as above.
ROM manager doesn't work with most of the kernels (ie. Read the cf-root kernel thread). But you can download the CWM app - search (works on cyanogenmod though). Most custom rom will come with it. What it does is to allow you to boot into cwm recovery mode to flash things.
It's all safe. Should anything go wrong, just boot into download mode and follow the first step again.
The "root" is actually part of a kernel hence "rooted kernel". So when people say you won't lose your root when you flash other roms/kernels is because you essentially flash another rooted kernel over your already-rooted kernel.
CWM recovery mode comes with most kernels. This is why when you flash different kernels you'll get the different cwm recovery version that comes with the different kernels.

Thanks for the replies. I flashed CF-Root, and got MIUI running great. Thanks guys!

Can't mount CACHE/recovery/log
then after flashing your zips phone stuck reboting at logo sony, so I have to start from zero, do you know why have that ocurred, is it because wiping cache?

for the xperia sspeed rom for example, you can also use the stock kernel, but why can't i use it for cm10?
That's a stock based rom so you can use the stock kernel. Whereas CM10 is AOSP based so many things in the Kernel are different for example Wi-Fi modules as well as other things

[Q] Factory built-in firmware backup

Hello,
is there any easy way to backup my original factory firmware so after I flash a new ROM and I won't like it I can revert back to what factory gave me?
Best you can do is root your phone, and do a nandroid backup in CWRecovery before doing anything else to the phone (flashing a custom rom/kernel/etc). This will give you a 'snapshot' of your stock setup only with root, and all you'd need to do to unroot is flash a stock kernel.
Or you can simply flash a stock rom with Odin over whatever you have at the time.
There's no way to do what you're asking with a stock/unrooted phone.
As mentioned above u can't do it with out rooting. First root your phone without flashing any custom rom or kernel by pasting the zip file in ext sd and apply update using stock recovery. Then download recovery tools from play store and get your temporary cwm touch recovery. After this go to stock recovery and apply this zip. Then do a nandroid backup and reboot after it finishes. You'll have the exact stock rom, kernel and recovery. :good:

I know you guys here don't like such questions, but can I ask for links to that tools? I got S2 Root file but it has to be flashed via Odin. What recovery tools from Play Store? You mean this?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=pl
How can I get "my temporary CWM touch recovery"? What ZIP to apply then? Geez! Am I that stupid or it is just language issue? Hahaha

Dont worry dude. i'll try and explain as much as i can.
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 and choose the Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip or Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip from the attachments.
2. Paste it in your ext sd card and power off.
3. Reboot into recovery mode and choose apply update from sdcard and select the SuperSU file.
4. Now reboot your device and it will be successfully rooted and SuperSU will be installed.
5. Download temporary cwm recovery from their website or get it via recovery tools in play store. (link provided by you is correct except for different language i think )
6. Paste cwm.zip it in ext sd and reboot into recovery mode. apply update and you will get temporary cwm recovery.
7. Now you can take backup from it. it will backup all your data and both rom, kernel and even recovery will be stock.
Be careful while flashing roms or kernels though. :good:
