I bought a View tablet a week ago!
and i been using it, as a phone since then ,with a $35 sprint data plan , and WIFi at home or wherever wifi is available.
Working: outgoing calls , incoming calls and text messages!
---how to make it work?
this tutorial is to make the Evo View ( maybe HTC Flyer too ) Working as a Cellphone
1. - A Google phone number ( very Important ) this will be your phone number.
2. - Gingerbread rom, maybe HC, I tested with HC and CM10, but the quality of voice works best in GB (viperboy Redline v1 rom works great)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408743
Download link, View users only.: http://d-h.st/5087dkknj38h/viperROM_Redline_v1_View.zip
(Flyer users can try this with any Flyer GB or HC Rom. )
3.- Google Voice App,Download it from play store, ( for text messaging)
sign in to google voice follow the steps of the application, it will not ask you for a verification number, since this is a tablet
now! you good to go, you can send and receive text messages via google voice app. With Your Google voice number .
-you can't send pictures with google voice, only texts-
4.- Spare Phone, ( paid app, $2.99 ) download it from play store ( for incoming and outgoing calls) supports 3g/4g and Wifi connections for make phone calls
- sign in with your gmail and password, and you will see all your gmail contacts,
setup the aplication the way you want for make and receive calls.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ndWlkb2xvZ3kuc3BhcmVwaG9uZSJd
Dont use Grooveip , Spare Phone app, works a lot better. and you will be available to see call log, gmail contacts and phone keypad
5.- bluetooth headset?
-Now you are ready to make and receive text messages and phone calls.
if you have 3g/4g connection , you can get calls and text messages wherever you are.
Everything with your Google Phone Number.

i been using this with my View 4g and my Google Phone Number , and works great I put my original phone number in standby with sprint. only $8.99 for month plus $34.99. Of data plan for my Evo VIEW
well, this is not actually what people would expect
because google voice is a VOIP service, it makes calls over the internet instead of using the actual phone function of the View.
but, this could be one alternative way to makes calls using your View
*** currently, google voice only available in the US.
so, for ppl outside the US (like me) wont be able to use this service

I'll make an update later, about how to get an USA phone number without forwarding phone number from sprint.
And how to make it work outside of USA.
but yeah calls and texts will only work with usa phones numbers and Canada I think Puerto Rico too.
but you will be available to call to usa or they can call you wherever country you are. With Your Google phone number.

So I don't know if it's just me, but I noticed lately that my stock messaging app doesn't display all my text messages. For example, twice today someone sent me a message, and twice they were wondering why I never replied. I do have my sprint number set as my Google voice number, but I hardly ever use the google voice app to send text messages. Oddly enough, all my messages are displayed in my Google voice app, so I did receive them. Does anyone have am idea why the stock messaging app just doesn't display some messages?
Your going to have to uninstall and deactivate your Google voice. For some reason, no matter what setting you have Google voice, it will intercept all your calls and text.
I had to deactivate my Google voice account and wait the recommended 15 minutes. Reboot your phone and you should be fine.

You can still keep using Voice for voicemail while having text messages get handled by Sprint. Here's how:
First, deactivate Google Voice so we can start from scratch: Voice > Settings > Sign Out

Reboot (this is important). This should allow you to already have text messages working but to also have voicemail working in perfect harmony, do this:
Open up Google Voice again but follow my instructions for activating it. In the first screen hit skip NOT next. Next will activate Voice with full settings -- we don't want that:
Select your account and hit sign in. Hit Next and select how you want it to handle international calls (I chose mine to ask me every time). Hit Next and touch the 'dial *284066466449' button and wait for it to go through. Then go back and hit configure, select Google Voice.
To verify that you did it right, your Google Voice account (if you go into it with your browser -- voice.google.com) should look like mine:
Notice there is no 'text messages' or anything like that on the left hand side or tabs. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll look into it more. I had this issue before and it was annoying. Couldn't find a solution until I messed with it myself.
EDIT: After re-setting up Voice (had to disable it for screenshots ) I noticed that it now has a setting to allow messaging app to deal with texts. Settings> Notifications> Receive text messages through messaging app.
I can't vouch for that method, however.
It's not Google voice. It's the Evo. I don't have Google voice and I don't receive texts from at least three differ people. I been pissed about it for days. I'm about to download a messaging app and see if that help

In his case it is Google Voice (probably, since they do show up in Voice). With you, I would recommend profile update but if you already did that, early on some people were having issues with phone going into roaming and getting texts late or not at all. Re provisioning the phone fixed it.

Had this problem when google updated when i had my shift. You can just update through the online gvoice settings as well. (not the app, via the web)

What carrier is the sender on? AFAIK, MMS works to and from Sprint numbers.
The person is on Sprint. So, basically you're saying if anyone from Sprint sends me a MMS that it will email me the picture but no other carrier?

I get an email of the picture or audio if someone sends a MMS to my Google Voice number. I didn't think that the app was able to receive them.

Yea. Google and Sprint have agreements in place for Google Voice. Sprint users can also port their numbers to Google Voice directly without having to have a separate carrier number.
I use Google Voice and get pics to my phone with BOOST Mobile
I have my Gvoice settings set to:
Forward copy of my texts to gmail.
Some smaller ones do, some larger ones do not. I am almost certain that thumbnail sized simple jpegs will usually go to your smartphone.
Regardless, as long as you have this option, and an internet enabled phone, you may still be able to manually log into your gmail account to view any MMS messages that don't go to your phone. Audio and video too.

but you are on sprint, right?
I receive images to my email regardless of carrier. I have gotten them from ATT, Sprint, Verizon and T-mobile accounts. I still can't send them out. I have to email any images.
When I first started using GVoice I was not able to receive any MMS texts. Then at some point the MMS texts came to my GMail. Then later on the GVoice app started doing what the OP said. I guess now GVoice can receive MMS texts and it notifies you on Gvoice but sends the media portion of it to your GMail.
ya on any phone i've used google voice ive never gotten mms at all. I'm using page plus as my carrier
Seriously, this really infuriates me.
I have to regularly send text messages to 30 people. Sometimes they are up to 3 messages long, that's 90 messages. This should not be a problem.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with the latest CyanogenMod.
- First, Android seems to have a 100 messages per hour hard limit. Still, if my messages are max 3 texts long, this should not be a problem.
- The native Messaging app, nor Google's Hangouts have the option to text a contact group.
- When I enter all recipients manually in Hangouts, it keeps erroring. I'm fortunate to have noticed that DeskSMS can show me which messages got though. Usually around half of them. I them manually select the others and retry. (The built-in retry option retries to send to everyone and so it can take hours and multiple retries before everyone received the message at least once.)
- There are specific apps in the Play Store for Group Messaging. I tried several ones:
- [Group SMS & Scheduler](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.baole.app.groupsmsad2) - This app used to work on my HTC Desire, but fails for my S4. It just sends some random messages (last time I checked it broke the multipart sms up in parts) and sends some random parts to maybe 5 people. Absolutely worthless.
- [Groep SMS](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobappli.groupsms) - This app just does nothing when I tried it last time. It also feels quite weird so I didn't try it again.
- I also tried to use replacement texting apps like Go SMS or Handcent, but they don't work if you don't configure them as the default text messaging app. I'd like to stick to Hangouts if possible.
- Lastly, whatever option I tried, something I always get is 5-10 popups telling me that "App X" is sending a lot of messages and if I want to allow it to continue. I'm suspect that this messages may cause group texting apps to fail because they just try all messages sequentially and don't place them in a queue or something. Once one of them fails because I have to confirm it, all other after it may fail as well.
Google really sucks at providing a good user experience. They always come with "innovative and shiny" new features no-one needs, but fail to provide a good experience for the core functionality of their (Android) products.
Is there anyone that knows a solution for my situation? It would be much appreciated!
@stevenroose
Why to blame whole android dude?
I am using group SMS on my Samsung Galaxy y and it is working excellent. Never failed yet.
You can blame your device/manufacturer. Why to blame whole Android?

CyanogenMod has an option to increase the SMS limit, at least CM10.2 does, I believe they ported it to CM11 as well. You can look into Settings - Security - SMS message limit (near the bottom).
If it is not there, you can try this.

The native CyanogenMod Messaging app does have the option. When you write a new message, press the + sign to the right of the contact input option, and from there you can add contact groups. See the attached image.

How to make it work??
Just installed and working great (after selecting autostart and restarting the phone)... Some improvements can be done on the interface but so far working as expected! Great job buddy
Works like a charm, thx m8 !
This is my 2nd favorite app right behind Wear Messenger. Thank you Dev!
Tanks for the app! Gonna test it a few days and donate something if I keep using it besides all the other apps I'm testing atm
The app keeps crashing when someone calls me :/
Which version you use?
What model phone?
The error appears on watch or on phone?
Version 1.11

wow I just saw this and installed. Looking forward to using it and sending a donation in a few days. I wonder if it would be possible to have a tab for starred contacts as well.
hello,
Thank you very much for this application. It's great.
When a call is made with a bluetooth headset, it's perfect. No need to take the phone out of his pocket, by cons when it falls on a voice server, is it possible to manage the keyboard on the watch to select a choice by offering the voice server? Driving the keyboard option when a call is done manually from the phone

hi all
Now I'm on vacation,'ll rework applications in October
Hello,
Ok.

It works quite well in LG G watch paired to LG G3 but the call log only shows the telephone numbers and not the names of the contacts .
Thanx for your job :good:
Works fine with G watch and Xperia Z3.
Good work mate.

Hello!
I'm also needed a tab for starred contacts so I created my own app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.psksoft.watchphone
Regarding a voice menu and dial during a call - as far as I know it's not possible to send DTMF tones (at least on non-rooted phones) from third-party apps in current Android.

Hi, very interested if you ever got your app to send dtmf tones from watch.....my phone is rooted..... i want to buy your app
Why was the app removed from the play store? I wanted to reinstall it after it gave me an error on my watch. After uninstalling from phone and watch(wear 1.5) I still get the call notification. Can't get rid of it and don't feel like resetting my watch.
Hi all!
I've just updated to the latest version (10.1.13.0) and now Chomp SMS can't send messages. It will receive them, but not send anything, it just says 'failed'.
Bizarrely (and annoyingly) the stock app is running fine. I even tried Handcent to see if it was just Chomp that was the issue, but that too wouldn't send SMS.
I have searched everywhere, but to no avail.
Can anyone help me? Or is this a bug with the Pie update?
hello
Hello,
Sorry for my English is not good, I'm French I wanted to tell you that I have exactly the same problem, since the update it is impossible for me to send sms from a third application than the one google play. Only the original application works.
can you help me too? Thank you

Fixed it!
I have a SD card in my phone. And for reasons beyond me, my SIM is put in Poco's in No 2 slot.
There's been no issue, but when I updated to Pie... None of the 3rd party SMS apps were picking up the No 2 slot.
I've used a 'dual sim management' app to select the 2nd SIM as the 'preferred' sim (as I cannot find ANY setting in Poco to do this) and it works!
What a fiasco to be honest...

Super that it works, can you give me the link of the application that you used?
Thank you
Guys, I had a similar problem for last couple of weeks, but while using Messages app from Google - receiving was OK, sending 50% failed. Changed recently to Textra SMS and for the moment no complaints, all working fine - and, as @adeyb, I'm using SD card. Maybe try this app?
I'm using 'dual sim selector' (I bought the PRO version) from the playstore.
Following the instructions, keep it locked and autostart it, choose No 2 - and away you go!!
Annoying that I had to mess about doing this as there's no setting to alter within the phone's system, but meh, got it sorted now...
so that is why i had problems with sms apps?thanks
Currently in dialogue with chomp sms developer. And Just had confirmation fix applied in next release of Chomp in the new year.
Quick Response during Incoming Calls
I use Textra as my default messaging app. I cannot send my messages when I select quick response option during incoming calls. It will only work if you use the native messaging app. Problem is, I prefer Textra for numerous reasons. Any solutions?
