Rooting 3.16? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Has anyone rooted with stock 3.16 yet? Wondering if any problems will occur when I get around to it.

It should work like before the only issue might be HTC-DEV sending the unlock code email

Could you elaborate on this? I tried signing up for an HTCdev account last night to S-OFF my phone and never got the email. I relocked my phone while following Unlimited's instructions and than never was able to get an HTCdev account so I just had to set my phone back up but did not reroot it or put a recovery back on. Now I'm thinking about just doing all of the OTA updates and getting my phone completely up to date than do the S-OFF and root it once I finally get an HTCdev account.

I have the stock 3.16 rooted. Rooting went fine, the only problem I had was with ROMing. Right now there is a problem with TWRP 2.4.1.0, it wont write the kernel. TWRP 2.4.0.0 and below wont work on the stock 3.16 as the touch interface is broken due to a screen driver update.

I would hold off on the OTA update right now. I did just that and almost bricked my phone this last weekend. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37549636 for details. Sprints OTA will bypass 3.15 and take you straight to 3.16.

Thanks for the info. Can anybody elaborate on the HTCdev email comment mentioned above in regards to 3.16.

Ok thanks, so far I can definitely confirm this wonderful experience with HTCdev. I just wish I knew about this before I RUU'd my phone in the Dirtyracun process only to be sitting for hours waiting for a registration email with a completely stock phone. I still have not received the email after 20 hours now. I've even called HTC without any help. I was all ready to be S-OFF last night.

I wasnt able to use TWRP at all. I had to use CWM recovery. you could also use fastboot to flash a ROM, but I don't think any ROM's except for the stock ROM will work with the OTA 3.16 because of the touch screen issue. I was able to flash Meanbean 2.9, it installed fine but after it booted I couldnt use the phone as the screen didnt work. I used the stock rooted ROM provided by The D3rps, located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2127947.

You can have a custom recovery, just not TWRP. There is a version of CWM recovery that will work: *removed* page 5 and on for details.
The CWM recovery is what worked for me. Only thing that can throw you off guard is in CWM recovery you have to use the camera button as your enter button. The power button is the 'go back' action.
The command from fastboot is: Fastboot flash zip (name of SU zip). Though, I am new to this myself so running this fastboot method by a senior hackster might be best.

The first time I relocked and ran an RUU to obtain JellyBean I used the RUU that does the work for you. Yesterday I relocked and ran the 3.15 RUU zip from unlimited.io via Fastboot commands and was pretty easy. If I get bored enough and really get the ROM flash itch I may do as you say but for now I think ill stay unrooted stock.

Just for clarification, you ran the 3.15 then accepted the OTA from HTC which brought you to 3.16 correct? I ask because if you are on 3.15 you can use the older TWRP with no problems

Bricked Thunderbolt

I recently ran revolutionary on a HTC Thunderbolt, and the process finished...It is now S-off. I installed CWM, and was going to install SU and flash a ROM. But the volumes keys don't work with any consistency so I could not maneuver. It eventually tried to update itself OTA and the phone bricked. It would shut down right after it booted up, I then flashed and old RUU, and now have no recovery. I am completely frustrated with this Phone, what can I do. I have tried flashing TWRP recovery, but it just installs over and over, I need to install a recovery and at this time are unable to do so.I am still running a stock ROM, but I am S-off, Is it possible to flash a ROM out of bootloader, as that is all I can access right now. IS their a Linux unbricker for this phone, as there is for others.
Currently it freezes on the HTC splash screen, and when I can get into the bootloader, I can not access recovery or any other options except HBOOT
Have you tried installing a recovery using ADB, and then downloading a Rom on your pc, copy to your SD, and then install from the recovery you pushed to it? Not sure if that's how you tried installing the recovery or not..

Don't know how, but I would try anything.
Now that I think more on it that probably won't work.. I'm not too familiar with ADB pushing and such but that might be the way to flash a different Rom in hboot. Try looking into the thunderbolt tool from the development section and see if there's anything I'm that program that could help you

Doesn't the phone have to actually be able to boot in to the ROM to use the Thunderbolt tool, it just freezes as the Splash screen
I'm not sure. The tool is a program you install on your computer. I've personally never used it before, haven't had the need. In one of the screen shots there is a "unbrick menu" followed by coming soon but I'm not sure if it's been updated or not. There is also a recovery installer menu

It is possible to flash a ruu following the same steps
Sent from my Thunderbolt using xda app-developers app
I was able to flash the latest ClockworkMod but it still won't boot, I flashed the RUU back to stock, but is still sticks at the splash screen, but it does skip the HBOOT each time, since I have a protected HBOOT from revolutionary when I rooted the phone and got to s-off.
I have to figure out out how to install a stock HBOOT and start over from what I read.
Sorry I couldn't have been more help, that's everything that I can think of. Good luck!
Sent from my Thunderbolt using xda app-developers app
I have a solution...I was able through ADB to roll back the HBOOT to the non protected mode that it was put in when I rooted the phone, and was able to flash a Stock recovery through ADB. I then rooted the phone and gained s-off which gave me control once again.
I think when he took the OTA it wiped out his recovery & root.
I am just glad that I got it fixed.

[Q] Stumped! How in the heck do I get S-off and wifi working?

I have bootloader ver 1.05.0000 and my S is on. I am trying to get it turned off. Both revolutionary and thunderbolt tool fail at the rooting portion. I already hack clockworkmod flashed and am running a thunderstick full blown (for now). I want to update my radios and attempt to fix my wifi. So how do I go about getting the s-off on this thing. I have adb and can log into the phone push/pull files and send it commands. What am I missing?
Ever since i flashed clockwork and got a working rom installed my wifi has been KIA.
Thanks,
Barry
I tired this method: http://www.thunderboltforums.com/fo...690-downgrade-get-s-off-now-unneccessary.html
No dice. Still says S-on revolutionary still didnt work thunderbolttool worked then opened revolutionary, but revoutionary still failed.
What now?
Make sure you disable your computers firewall and virus protection. Sometimes it can cause it to hang up.
Also make sure USB debugging is turned on.

It seems to me that you're going to have to unroot. Restore the stock ROM RUU and unroot. Then root again with the tool and then you will have s-off.

You don't need to downgrade, but you do need to be on a stock rom (.19 or lower) for the root to work. Here's a stock .19 ruu that should work for you: http://goo.im/devs/trter10/PG05IMG.zip
edit: just noticed the last post. Just going to warn you, you will not be able to flash an ICS or AOSP ROM with just htcdev unlock

A custom rom installed

When I get home
flash older RUU
run tb tool to get sf and root
re install clockworkmod recover and custom rom
Sound right?
In terms of my WIFI what could be wrong with it? It doesnt work on any custom rom.
Thanks

Phone in boot loop after restoring to stock ROM backup using TWRP 2.5

Can someone help me please?! I'm on HBOOT 2.09, S-ON. What happened was I was trying to flash my device with the following CM 10.1 ROM (cm-10.1-20130608-UNOFFICIAL-jewel.zip). I even manually flashed the kernel with boot.img extracted from the ROM's zip files via fastboot right after I flashed the ROM but before rebooting the system. The device then booted up into CM 10.1...only to find out the touch screen doesn't work. So I realized that I need S-OFF. I figured I could restore to my nandroid backup via TWRP and try to get S-OFF, but once I did that, my phone is now stuck in a boot loop. I can still boot into bootloader/recovery...but don't know what to do now. Also tried getting S-OFF via FacePalm's method (http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/692301-s-off-facepalm-s-off-htc-evo-4g-lte.html) but my adb doesn't seem to be working. When I type "adb shell', I get the following error message "error: device not found".
Does anyone out there have a solution for this?
Thanks so much in advance!!
Boot into fastboot. Open command prompt and CD into your root folder type fastboot erase cache. See if that cures your bootloop. Are you issuing the adb command while phone is mounted as media share? Adb won't work in fastboot.

Thanks atheistevofreak! However, if possible, I'd prefer not to complicate the situation by flashing another ROM. I'm just puzzled as to why my phone is in a boot loop after restoring back to my original ROM from my nandroid backup. Does it have something to do with the fact that I'm S-ON and I had flashed the kernel with the boot.img via fastboot after flashing the CM 10.1 ROM?
The reason you're bootlooping is because you are S-on. You have to install the kernel separately from the ROM, otherwise your phone won't boot. Most Sense ROM's have an S-on kernel installer to simplify ROM flashing. Once you gain S-off this won't be an issue.
If you are on the latest OTA (Hboot 2.09, software version 3.16, baseband ending in 1210), you have the newest touch panel driver, so you can only use ROM's based on software version 3.16, meaning you can't run AOSP ROM's like CM. Once you gain S-off you can downgrade the touch panel driver to the previous version so you can run any ROM you would like.
Also, being on the latest OTA, you can only use Dirty Racun to gain S-off.
Click the link in my sig for more info.

Thanks FinZ28! So here's what I should do now?
1. gain S-Off using Dirty Racun
2. downgrade the touch panel driver to previous version
3. Re-install the CM 10.1 ROM <-- since I'll be S-Off by this point, I won't need to flash the kernel with the boot.img separately, right?
Can all this be done while my phone isn't bootable (eg. stuck in a boot loop)?
I would need to look over the Dirty Racun steps again to be sure, but it's probably preferable that your phone have a ROM loaded. I would install something like MeanBean for the time being, but don't worry about setting it up.
The steps you mentioned are correct, though

2. gain S-Off using Dirty Racun
3. downgrade the touch panel driver to previous version
4. Re-install the CM 10.1 ROM <-- since I'll be S-Off by this point, I won't need to flash the kernel with the boot.img separately, right?
Sorry but I just want to be absolute sure of what I'm doing is correct. Thanks again!

1. Flash MeanBean ROM
2. gain S-Off using Dirty Racun
3. downgrade the touch panel driver to previous version

Cool, awesome! Checking it out right now. Is it still recommended that I install MeanBean before attempting S-Off w/ this Moonshine method?

Yes, you must be able to boot into a ROM for Moonshine to work.

So I finally got S-OFF via Moonshine's method!! Now this may sound like a noob question, but now that I have S-OFF, do I still need to do the HTCdev bootloader unlock? Because when I boot in recovery, I don't see the "LOCKED" or "UN-LOCKED" message on top anymore. Is there a quick way to check to see if my phone is HTCdev unlocked or not? I can smell CM 10.1 not far away now

[Q] SoftBricked Droid DNA. Please Help.

Hi I am needing some help with my phone. i soft bricked it a while back and it has been stuck in a bootloop ever since.
Important things to know.
it is ***locked***
monarudo pvt ship s-on
hboot-1.33.0001
radio-1.01.04.0308
OpenDSP-v6.120.274.0114
eMMC-boot
okay so i have tried using the RUU on my phone but it is giving me the error 158 because it says i don't have to correct ruu for my phone. secondly i get the FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail) error when i try to flash anything in in fastboot. so everywhere i have seen someone post about this they are told to try to go to s-off using moonshine but the problem is that my phone will only connect to fastboot and not to bootloader so i can't use ADB which you have to use to work with moonshine. if i could please get some help on this it would be greatly appreciated.
First thing first I'm guessing u have no ROM on your phone. Sense u in a bootloop?

no it was never rooted nor did it have a custom rom
if i go to recovery it bootloops, if i go to factory reset it bootloops, it is honestly acting like there is no rom and no recovery there at all. the only thing it will connect with my computer with is the fastboot and even then it won't let me flash anything in and it won't accept the RUU. i am just incredibly confused.

Are u sure it's never been rooted with a custome recovery or did this happen while trying to root/soff? Because what ur saying doesn't add up. I had a similar problem awhile back while trying to flash a Rom. It kept failing over and over. On my last attempt the recovery crashed and somehow became corrupt. So I was stuck with hboot and had nowhere to go. I ended up fastbooting a new recovery & downgrading hboot to the one compatible with the only RUU available.
You need to downgrade the hboot and then RUU. Then you can moonshine.

yes i am pretty sure it failed during trying to flash moonshine. i have tried to flash things in as i stated above but nothing will go in because it is saying its not the correct signature.

The link ThayIO provided is basically what I did.
If you are unlocked the command is: fastboot flash recovery (drag & drop the recovery image into the command window) and press enter.

like i said i am unsure on the exact details. it just doesn't make sense that i can't use my bootloader and then my fastboot commands are pretty much useless.. if i only had a way to flash in a recovery or the stock hboot it would work
Your only option is to achieve s-off. You can't do anything in fastboot without it. Until then your SOL

Thanks,

EDIT: The official link has been taken down. If you would still like to download the RUU anyway, I have uploaded it here and here.
NOTE: For those having issues updating via the RUU (drivers, Windows 8.1, etc), see this post for an alternative install method.
NOTE 2: There is an updated RUU (4.13.651.4) which was released to some testers from HTC. The update fixes the data roaming issue. It hasn't been released officially, but there is a download link for it here and a mirror here.
Excellent! Thanks Captain
Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen an official update that voided your warranty before.
Should I be worried that it's been stuck on the "sending" screen (on the PC, Windows 7) and the phone on the HTC logo for over 30 minutes?

I restarted it, and it's going this time. No idea what the deal was, but it's working now! Loaded and first booting.
It works, the only thing is supersu. I have to fine one that works with 4.3.

Not sure what SuperSU has to do with this RUU, but you should be able to flash SuperSU fine (as long as you're using the recovery from my thread).
So to clarify (sorry if this is a stupid question), but will this keep root? Just have to flash SU after? I'm rooted and s-off right now with custom ROM.

This is an official RUU from HTC. You will lose root and custom recovery. You'll have to flash the custom TWRP from my thread or Philz's modified CWM, and then you can flash SuperSU for root. Make sure your bootloader is unlocked after running this though - otherwise you won't be able to write permanently to /system.
Thanks, captain. I figure it out. I used the modified twrp.

Can anyone using this RUU comment on if their bootloader is still unlocked after?
Still on hboot 1.12.2222 (I think) and can probably figure out flashing supersu through TWRP after I flash TWRP.
Captain, can you link your thread? I've only used your zips for flashing firmware bits, radios, etc.
Thank you,
Skid

My bootloader stayed unlocked the entire time. My thread is in OG Dev. If you flash the RUU, you'll only need a recovery.
I'm experiencing a weird problem with the update. HTC beats audio doesn't enable unless I do the refresh on the blink homescreen or if I disable it, and enable it via settings. Once it goes to another track, it turns off again despite showing the icon that means it is on. I have to repeat the said steps to get it on again. This is using the HTC music app, and Google Play music app. Anyone aware of this? This is all stock with the new RUU.

Well they knew about it before giving us the final version and they didn't fix it. That suggests to me that it's unlikely to be fixed.
Thanks for this, downloaded and I'm gonna give it a shot, I'd like to root after, but I'm a bit confused, Where do I get the modified twrp? and also a little help on how to flash it cause it's been a while I flash something to my evo and with all the keeping up with my note 2, well I feel like new to the htc evo again.
Thanks!

i thought i read somewhere that needed to relock bootloader, so i did, caused me lots of problems trying to flash ruu. it wouldnt complete ruu, got some htc_fastboot.exe errors, had to restart ruu 3-4x...finally decided to unlock bootloader again and give it a go. completed, no issues so far, all is good again. now shows only unlocked, not tampered unlocked as before ruu
