Soft bricked s3? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I've got a rooted s3 (international).
Rebooted to cwm, factory reset + format system.
Went to flash new omega rom and realised it wasn't on the sdcard.
-Mount sdcard says e: error mounting /sdcard
-I can flash rom from internal memory (but it's not on there)
-I have an external sdcard with the rom on it, but it cannot be opened in cwm.
How can i fix this? Truly stuck.
Thanks

Try flashing via odin pc.. can you go to download mode??
from Godfather GT-N7100

The roms I have don't seem to be compatible with Odin.
Can I flash a rar file through Odin? Or do I unpack it?

There isn't a single md5 file within the .rar.

you have to download a stock firmware from sammobile.com, its filetype is .tar.
And I'm pretty sure you mean zip, not rar. And no, zips can't be flashed via Odin.

Thanks mate.
Yeah, probably.

Stuck at Bootlogo

Hey folks,
I got a Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 and upgraded my custom rom to Resurrection Remix ics v1.8 today (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854).
The problem is that I am now stuck at the bootlogo -.- I fear that my phone is bricked now as I cant boot it up anymore to flash a new/old rom. Is there any way to get a new rom flashed via download or recovery mode? The main problem is that I cant put new files on thje phone via USB so imho it is impossible for me to flash something new... Hope there's a way or that someone can help with his problem.
best regards,
daZza

your phone isnt bricked, just noobed, its ok
If you still got cwm, which I think you have, format data, system, cache, sdcard
Download the custom ROM again, use mount option in cwm and copy file.
Or after wiping/ format, use Odin and flash the stock ROM

Ye I still got CWM, but when trying to mount USB storage it says: E:Unable to open ums lun file (No such file for directory)...
No I mean, from mount and storage press mount, and plug in the cable. And copy the new file from computer

if u get odin then flash....if cwm then factory reset on there ,an again ur on cwm ok so install the rom now...

No files found.

I recently tried to install android revolution hd 2.2.0 and ran super wipe.I have put the rom on the sdcard too,so it isn't anymore and the normal bootup doesn't work,I am stuck in recovery and need a way to put that rom there to flash it..does the window explorer work in recovery mode?

If you have the stock Rom flash it via Odin.
Cwm sometimes mounts the external sd card but sometimes doesn't.. don't know how it is for others but it isn't working properly for me.
Go to mount and storage in Cwm for mounting sdcard.

I removed the battery because it was not charging and I thought I won't can flash any rom with the battery low,so I will seek more advices before turning it back on,so..
Wipe removed all my files, including stock rom,but I don't know if volume down + power + home button will work.Well I went into choose zip from sdcard and they all were there,I ran super wipe as it was said in the flash tutorial and it deleted almost everything,I am stuck into recovery and I cannot enter sdcard because there are no files anymore, such as the rom needed to be flashed.
If I mount sdcard n the mount and storage in cwm will windows explorer be able to put the rom back there? So i can flash it with.
update: volume down+home+power works perfectly, should I flash the rom with odin directly? the sdcard is empty too.

If you can get into download mode then you should easily be able to flash via Odin.
Do a search in the forum because there are many guides about flashing through Odin.

I will flash stock rom then I will try again to do android revolution hd 2.2.0 ( the step I missed is about creating a virtual ssd )
I will come with an update if the flash stock rom through odin works.
Checkrom comes in two versions, one is Odin flashable, flash that.then u are rooted after flashing
Next time u use superwipe remember to move the rom to EXTERNAL SD-card ,because internal SD-card is wiped.
Weird..odin exits after a while it says Please wait then it quits, while trying to flash stock rom, what's the problem?
I found a way to put the rom back there, but it is in sdcard, and I cannot enter it ( cannot mount )
How can I solve this from the recovery mode? I am still stuck in recovery mode or download mode..and the rom is on the card now,but cannot access to flash it with cwm
Why do not you just boot?
Previous rom is there but wiped and restored.
I do not think that superwipe was made to empty system from the rom.

The rom had to be put on a virtual/external sdcard, but because I didn't read carefully I put it on sdcard aslong with superwipe,so after I launched superwipe it deleted the sdcard files and the stock OS too,so it just says samsung galaxy siii like before it boots, but it stays that way..
I don't know how to get into the sdcard, cwm recovery says it cannot mount it,sdcard contains my rom,and because I cannot access it,I cannot flash it..I need a way to help cwm to mount sdcard,so I can flash it from there..
Otherwise I tried flashing stock rom but odin crashes, like I press start, then it says check md5 then Please wait,it gets stuck and quits..
Which recovery do you have? Is it the touch cwm?
Flash 5.5.0.4 1.5 from chainfire. Make sure when running odin nothing from kies is running in the background and make sure you do not tick re-partition.

It is not touch cwm..it is a normal cwm from what I have seen.
Can you give me the exact version ( including link )to flash with odin? I think it does not charge and I always get off the battery from it when I try something new and it does not work.

Then i need to tell you that you must flash through Odin a full rom then reroot and then flash again a custom rom of your choice.
Just make sure every time you flash with Odin nothing from Kies runs in the background. Otherwise Odin flash will fail or stuck.

Its checking md5, that takes a few minutes.
Boot into download mode (volume down+home+power, press up when it says are you sure) then flash via Odin.
Its simple.

In recovery mode go to mounts and storage and there you should find option "mount usb storage". You can easily copy files in usb storage while in recovery mode.
i'm on CWM based recovery v5.5.0.4 and in it there is no mount usb storage option

Go into download mode and flash a stock rom using Odin. That would bring your s3 back into working condition. Then you can flash your desired custom rom again.
I find custom rom install no boot worth A reboot or B factory reset first .

Did you use Rom Manager to boot to recovery? I don't know if it's the same on i9100 but the i777 has issues with Rom Manger, with the recovery part of the kernel. I know CM comes with, I haven't researched it but maybe something to look into...... It kinda sounds like you formatted the ROM. GL

Yes i used Rom manager to boot into recovery...
can u suggest any possible fix for this??
Flash siyah kernel via odin and that should give you a fresh copy of clock work recovery if its corrupt?
Rom manager is nothing but trouble. It done the same thing to my x10i and my sg2.
It took several hours to get them back to running cwm(so I could restore my nand backups).
I think I used doom lords easy rooting kit for one and Odin for the other.
I've done a lot of stuff on several phones and I can state that after using RM it left the phones as close to full brick as you can get........lol

Yup, there's your problem. Rom Manager flashes incompatible kernel.
Simply boot into download mode and flash Siyah kernel and you will be back up and running.
Sorry mate it dint work... I flashed siyah kernel and now the phone doesnt proceed further from Siyah kernel logo...
can any one provide me way to flash a rom using odin...
i can use CWM... not even with the hard key combination...
only way left is i guess Odin..
Odin cannot flash .zip formats and all the rom downlodables are in .ZIP format...
is there a way out?

[Q] Restore files from a dead system?

Hello devs, I'd like to restore my lil bro's photos from his dead system, he knows for sure that his internal memory is intact because suddenly the system has died on him. ((No system but stock recovery, download mod work))
He gave me his device and begged me to restore his files
So, here it says that I have a custom rom but he said he never flashed any rom?!
so how do I restore his files? Can I just flash a custom twrp recovery and mount USB from there or will that wipe his memory??
if so, then what do I do?
Thanks.
Philz recovery will allow you to run aroma file manager, installing a recovery won't wipe data.
Copy files from data to the external sd.

You seem to confuse the s3 with the s2, recovery on the s3 is wholly separate from the rom or kernel.
If you can't flash a recovery with odin then your emmc chip is probably toast, which would include all data on the phone.

There is no work around for data recovery, if the rescue firmware from general thread won't flash either then you are looking at a dead emmc chip -warranty repair.
