[Q] Can Nook Tablet boot Ubuntu from sd card ? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I Have been running CM7 and CM10.1 from sd card on my Nook Tablet 8gb and have been well pleased with results.
I would like to also run Ubuntu from sd card but all my attempts have failed as follows.
1 Using A.Outlers method as described tried both(linux and windows versions) on xda but disabling--deleting /root/recovery file as advised.
2 Using Ubuntu Arm pre-installed precise image to sd card.
3 switching boot scheme with above using cyanoboot from cm10 and the filled with bugs version, (I am weak in how exactly the boot partition can be modified and edited as I am used to grub editing which is pretty straightforward)
I at least get boot but no Ubuntu otherwise all I get is black screen and difficulty getting back to stock nook or cm10(jelly bean).
If anyone has been able to make this work please let me know how you were able to make it work.
As I said my nook is 8GB version and I am well versed in Linux and Windows as well as SD format and booting most OS from SD, USB, CD etc.
Maybe because my nook is not yet rooted ? or just not smart enough to figure it out !! HELP!!!!!!!!!

8 gb nook tablet android
After some digging realized the Ubuntu image is for 16Gb nook only, I've tried all Ubuntu schemes I could find using the Nook 8gb bootloaders that work with android on nook 8gb, cyanogen boot and a couple of others. I found a debian wheezy with 3.0.57 arm kernel but no luck on boot with JB cyanogen boot. not knowing boot parameters needed or even how to edit boot features makes this unlikely for me to accomplish. If I could get a basic boot I can build a linux version from scratch, more study needed and not much out there as far as tutorials or help. Pointers are requested.

[Q] Partial Nook Tablet CM7 Conversion

I bought a Nook tablet 8G runing 1.4.2 and followed the thread on the Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final and it worked only part way. It will only boot into CM7 if the tablet is connected to the computer. I works GREAT when I get it booted into CM7 I LOVE IT But what did I do wrong?

If I understand other threads this is only when you are booting from SDcard for CM7
You did nothing wrong. A weird quirk the Nook SDcard Reader and some SDcards makes them slow to be ready. if it's not ready when nook tries to boot it, it fails and then books Normal nook.
But a little extra power seems to make the Reader/sdcard ready faster so it boots correctly.
You can try a different SDcard.
Not sure if it's cheap slot in nook or cheap card probably both.
You can search for thread on this. I boot internal so I don't see this issue.
Thanks for the reply..... I have a 16G Class 6 SD Card. I can try a class 10 to see if it makes a difference...

[Q] Bricked Nook Tablet Assistance

I have an 8GB Nook Tablet and made the foolish mistake of attempting to try and root it with acclaim-update.zip. Now my Nook will no longer boot and I've tried every unbricking method available. No progress was made.
I was a bit too eager to eager and rushed headfirst into it without researching it more thoroughly. If there's no fix for it, then that's fine. I just wanted to run through ever resource possible before giving up on it. I have spent the past few hours scouring the internet and coming up with little to nothing.
Have you tried booting CM7 from sdcard?
What things have you tried to make it boot?
Sent from my Nook Tablet using xda premium
Shouldn't you just be able to put the unmodified acclaim_update.zip on your sdcard? It should work and fix your nook. When you put the sdcard in, make sure the device is off, and then connect it to the power adapter to get it to turn on
IF its completly dead/ erased boot erea then your only option will be jtag.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64885133/bn_142_factory_recovery.zip
put that image on a sd card and boot by plugging in the usb cable into the charger

So far I've tried the Ubuntu method of unbricking it, factory reset, and booting with the 1.4.2 zip file to return it to factory settings. None of them have worked.
But I'll try CM7 and see if it works.
Am in the the same shoes... got a bricked NT 8GB... looking forward to restoring 1.4.2...
attempts to restore the firmware to factory:
Cyanoboot + altboot + B&N 1.4.2
Followed guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562130 , using (a) the img from dropbox and (b) nooktablet_1_4_2_update.zip from B&N. No luck. The process stops on the initial screen on cyanoboot, where it shows 'Loading (sd)...'. I don't even get to enter the menu that shows the boot options.
flashing_boot + B&N 1.4.2 update in ext3 partition
Next I downloaded the img link above, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24912163&postcount=5 , no luck also, the tick appeared on the flash 'Installing new software' screen after 4 minutes. After I removed the mSD card, the NT did a data cleanse, and got an error message about 40% into the factory restore prompting me to contact B&N. It then goes into the reboot loop (this is where I am now).
Ubuntu unbrick
No luck. NT don't even boot up to mSD with the mSD card slotted in.
I've tried the above multiple times, downloading the files few times as well. Am still stuck in the reboot loop.
Would like to seek help from gurus here for pointers... Am stuck at this point.
Thanks alot!

Can you get to CWM using Indirect's NT-CWM-SD package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
Get a micro SD card, fire up gParted (or whatever partition manager), put a new MSDOS partition table on it. Then make a new FAT32 partition at the beginning of the disk. Set the boot and lba flags. Copy the contents of Indirect's zip onto the disk. Stick it in the NT. Hold power + n for 10 seconds and wait for the grey "n" to show up on the screen for a second. Then turn it on.
If that takes you to CWM, then you've got options.
using a properly formatted SD card should solve most issues.. its the great thing about the nook.
1.make sure your using a good SD card. sandisk 8gb class and up would be best
2. make sure you grab the 8gb nook cm7 image.
3. preferably use a component based card reader. by that i mean one other then a laptops.. the laptop ones tend to be picky and lots of people in the nook color days had issues and most were resolved by using a computer one over a laptop one
4. with the nook OFF plug the usb cable into the nook then into the usb port on a computer
check out stickies too

Negative. I wish you were correct but - in this case - you are not.
Your advice is probably appropriate for those who cannot get an SDCard to boot properly. However, the O.P. has a bricked device and his original post is most descriptive. His NT8 will not boot to the INTERNAL EMMC. (I have the same problem.)
There are several of us here on XDA who are not novices with this issue. The O.P. has listed the various steps that he has followed and they are much more involved than a simple SDCard format issue.
BTW, most formatting issues are when users are attempting to format with Windows. I use Linux exclusively and I can ALWAYS build a boot SDCard without issues.
Also in the same boot as the O.P.
I also am having this problem. Been going through it for mths now. I've tried every possible fix people could come up with. I have been talking to a youtuber albertwertz. he would like me to send in my nook tablet to him to fix and try out different things. I would like to but cant afford it at the moment. Dang I hope someone finds a fix for this or make a cm9 sd bootale img or something dont get me wrong i like booting cm7 from sd but is this all im subject too. HELP SOMEONE. what are these developers working on. lets get this fix my people. PS thanks for all you all hard work on all roms.
Lost Nook 1.4.0 partition
Hi, Lavero.
I think I may have accidentally deleted the default nook partition. I can still boot up via SDCard and goes into CM7. How can I recover those default partition? Do you have those commands within Terminal Emulator or any other options?
If I do not put in my SDCard, with power cable connected, the nook tablet 16GB keep rebooting. I still want to recover my Nook default OS so that I can repartition it the next time I go to BN.
Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

[Q] Need help flashing CM10 on 16gb NT

I have a 16gb Nook Tablet that has firmware version 1.4.3 and I would like to run one of the CM roms internally. I am thinking about trying to run CM10 because from what I have read it has finally become stable (please correct me if I am wrong).
Over the last couple of months I have been skimming through this forum reading thread after thread trying to get a grip on the process. I have a 8gb class 4 Sandisk micro SD card that I would like to use for this. From what I understand I do not need to root the tablet first if I am going to flash a rom straight onto it.
So does anyone have a favorite method for going from a stock Nook Tablet to CM7 or CM10? I also wonder whether it is easier to use Windows or a linux OS to do this. I have Ubuntu on my Desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop so I can do either one. Also, how do you create a clone or image of my Nook and SD card so that I can revert back to them if anything goes wrong?
Edit: Do I need to repartition the NT hard disk like explained here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23272909#post23272909 or does that no longer matter once the new Rom has been installed?

Since you're new to flashing ROMs you might want to use this
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
Its an SDC image. Just write to your SD card and you're good to go. Once you learn a little more you can internally flash. Flashing without knowing what you're doing may cause problems which could essentially reformat or erase internal partitions.
Edit: You can use whatever operating system you want. Ubuntu can read all your partitions though. Windows can only read some. But that probably won't matter if you're new.
Thank you so very much. That was incredibly easy. Now I'm going to spend the rest of the evening messing around with this and finding out what I should have been doing all along with this tablet.

[Q] Boot location in nook

Hi ,
I have mistakenly formatted all locations in the nook tablet as i wanted to install CM10 as i had issues with installation while doing this mastery i did this mistake, now i have to have to SDcard each time to boot the nook into CM10. The SDcard contains the image of CM10 whereas the nook has also CM10.1. So with help of SD card i boot internally, now would like to know how to build the nook tablet boot records so without any SD card i login into nook tablet.
Thanks
I'd suggest you try reflashing CM10 using the process outlined at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43326042&postcount=123.

Tips Rooting Nook Tablet?

Hi
Am New so have been trying to do my homework before trying to root my Nook Tablet 16GB.
Found "Alternatively you could leave the device alone entirely and flash one of these custom roms to a card, similar to how you flash clockworkmod to a card and use that to boot into a rom, never needing to modify the device internal memory at all." by Cubanluke88 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037368
As a beginner who has Never Rooted Anything, I like this A Lot!!! Appreciate comments!!!
Also found "“Many NTs (including mine) will only boot off SD card from a power-off state and upon insertion of a powered USB cable” by OrangeTang
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630&page=19 Since this was posted 20th May 2013, am wondering if this is necessary for All Nook Tablets?
There is a Lot of Info concerning the Nook Tablets and I have only started so would greatly appreciate any tips!!!
Thanks

I think there is not much to be gained by preserving the stock configuration, unless you just want to do that while you shop around for a ROM. Eventually you will want to flash a CM ROM. That would leave you with a faster performance plus more storage on the SD card.
Here's what I did when I got my 16 GB NT from ebay--and would do again. If you have a local B&N store call and see if they will/still can repartition your device. This unlocks much internal storage. There are guides for doing this yourself, but it's risky for a newbie. Try B&N first if that's an option.
Next take a look here. This is the guide I used to get to CM 10.2.1 from stock (you can back up stock as part of the process in case you have buyer's regret). This would give you a solid Jellybean system.
User digixmax also has a guide for CM 11 or 12 which you can follow on a 10.2.1 system as if it were stock. I just did that to get to CM 12.1 (Lollipop) after a little over a year on 10.2.1. That guide is here. Read through the thread for files that worked for CM 12, or follow directions for CM 11.
But I really would take the internal plunge and start with CM 10. It was "easy" for me as a noob due, in no small part, to the excellent directions.
My tablet is apparently one of the rare ones that does not need to be plugged in to boot from an SD card.

First, you won't get quite the same responsive performance running ROM off SDcard as you'd get running the same ROM natively on internal memory (aka EMMC).
Second, I am not aware of any recent CM build that is compiled to run on SD, so you'd be limited to somewhat dated CM versions. The most recent SD-based CM build I know of is posted at https://iamafanof.wordpress.com/201...droid-4-4-4-for-nook-tablet-sdcimg-xxsep2014/.
Finally, if your NT cannot boot off SD without using a powered-USB cable, you will likely find yourself stranded on stock ROM if your NT reboots for any reason while you're out and about.

Your NT might be amongst the lucky few which can cold-boot on SD, and there is only one way to find out: try it out yourself .
nmyshkin & digixmax,
Thanks again for your suggestions!
While new to the Nook Tablet have been repairing Windows PCs for a while which is why I was excited to find out that it can boot from a mSD card. Normally I use Hiren's Boot CD on Bootable USB Device but have tried all ones listed at "Top 5 Free Rescue Discs for Your Sys Admin Toolkit" http://www.gfi.com/blog/top-5-free-rescue-discs-for-your-sys-admin-toolkit/
At this time I am not interested in speed differences or preserving the stock configuration, only want to get some experience before deciding on a ROM.
Cubanluke88's statement "Alternatively you could leave the device alone entirely and flash one of these custom roms to a card, similar to how you flash clockworkmod to a card and use that to boot into a rom, never needing to modify the device internal memory at all." was the first I read that you could boot the Nook Tablet using a mSD card.
Since then I have done some searches to find what Android Devices can boot from a SD card but to date have not found a listing. If anyone has any info would be interested!
Also hope someone has made a small version of Android with various recovery or testing tools like Hiren's!
The closest I have found are "UnBrick Tutorials" such as "How To Unbrick You're Phone | Any Android Version" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN2b6Fi9uEo

I have read the 3 versions but being new to Android (and Linux) am a little apprehensive.
Is there anything prebuilt that I could just copy to a mSD card.

CM11.0 KitKat (Android 4.4.4) for Nook Tablet (SDC/IMG) (01OCT2014)
https://iamafanof.wordpress.com/201...-4-for-nook-tablet-sdcimg-xxsep2014/#comments is the way I will try 1st.
"Create a bootable micro SDCard. Read my previous posts on creating bootable SDCard or look it up on XDA or follow the instructions in the SDCARD IMAGE section." Any recommendations for beginners?
"If you want to install the ROM from your SDCard, you need to create a 250MB BOOT partition to store the ROM."
Had hoped would not need to do this. Any Suggestions as to size etc? Also am thinking it may be easier for me to do this in Windows?
Read the comments and thought would go with CM11.0 KitKat (Android 4.4.4) since Trevor said "It appears your work is done here. The last build has been superb. Very fast and stable."
