I recently took apart my galaxy note to replace the power jack. After i put it all together, the screen will not come on. The phone is on and will be recognized my a computer. The capacitive touch lights come on and haptic feedback functions when they are used. But the screen wont come on.
Were do i go from here.
You will likely need to take the device apart again, and re-trace your steps...
Chances are, you have a bad connection to the digitizer screen, and as you know, those connections are "very" small, and are easily damaged or connected improperly.
There really is no other choice, than to inspect the areas you worked on....g

A little more information, I have the device apart right now.
I bought a used Note off of craigslist that had a broken screen and a bad SIM card slot. I transplanted that motherboard into my phone and the screen powers on. But with my motherboard it does not.
What should I look for specifically when inspecting the ribbon connections
That they are connected completely.

Checked,
Phone reassembled completely, still nothing on screen.
Now what.
UPDATE: Motherboard wont power either screen. The bad motherboard will power both.
What is the defect, on the board that powers both screens ?
It's beginning to sound as if you now have two bad mother boards ?
Or at least, a partially working board.
Either way, the device is still broken....ouch
It may come down to taking the device for repair, or trying to find yet another board.
At this point, getting a complete and working device may be in order, as risking more time and money on devices for parts, isn't working out ..
I'm sorry, I don't have any further advice for you at this point ....g
First, you need to differentiate what you mean by "bad" motherboard, cuz it sounds like both motherboards are "bad" in some way.
Your first motherboard is not powering screen, but everything else works. Correct?
Your second motherboard, bought online with bad SIM slot, powers screen, but cannot be used with the bad SIM slot. Correct?
It sounds like your first MB has issues for screen, which is obvious, because the screen works with the second MB.
Then, you may try to replace the SIM slot on the second MB. I think figuring out the problem with the first MB will be exponentially harder, let alone fixing it.
Or, just sell EVERYTHING you have and pony up some cash and buy a working phone, instead of trying to fix this thing. Since your MB is recognized by PC, you can still save all your data.
Agreed ..g

Yes, I apologize. Let me clarify.
Motherboard #1: Does not power screen, but works fine otherwise.
Motherboard #2: Will not read SIM or microSD cards, but powers screens just fine.
I looked into what replacing the SIM and microSD system on the motherboard. Its very difficult.
On the sell EVERYTHING front. I recently sold a set of Rims I had for my car. By some miracle, I was eligible for an upgrade with AT&T. Galaxy Note II ordered.
But, if I can get a spare phone working. Id still like to fix this one.
In my opinion ....
Dump them as parts devices ....
In another few months, these devices will be selling cheap ....imho
Note 3 is already being developed, and the 1 will be rolling off the back end by August/September 2013.
I saw one for sale in Utah today for $125.00
So it's already begun ....IMHO ....g

I checked out a few other threads, on a couple forums and dont think anyone has been stupid enough to do this so far...
about 4 months ago, I was lost and my phone was dead, having bodged a car charger together I plugged it in.
The phone turned on, booted up and I got the SatNav software running, but before I could drive off it started flashing.. screen, lights, like a tiny disco....
Then it smoked, quite a lot for a second or two, by this time I'd took battery out and dis-connected the charger but it was too late, the phone was dead.
I got home, put the battery in a desktop charger til it was full and the phone has remained at it's current condition since.
So; it won't turn on, vibrate or flash any lights. The ONLY thing it does, is power up the right hand side bottom white light between the home key and back button.
I've been Ebaying since the day I killed it for a spares one, tried buying a main board but no joy anywhere without paying over £70 (and that's for a complete but knackered handset).
My dad's good with phones, his mate better also both of which said i've burnt out some chips. Some do kinda, have small 'holes' in, and I wiped a 2GB card too, wont work in anything else.
Without spending silly amounts on a new phone can I not do anything with this? Apparently everything except the main board should work (screen, digitizer etc)..
Help anyone please? -ta.
I suggest that you contact your local support team because I think this is something that needs to be examined at a repair center.

I dropped my X10a, and cracked the screen/digitizer. Is it easier to replace the whole housing or just the digitizer? Any suggestions on which company supplies OEM parts at the best prices?

Guys I owned a Galaxy SIII white GT-19300... had it for 3-4 months, bought it brand new. used really carefully, only had one or two falls that's it.
Finally it decided to crap all of a sudden like it had a silent heart attack, just a couple of hours ago. It wasn't charging or was in process of updating or anything. Just that I was sitting and having a sms conversation where in the middle it just won't budge at all. It just went completely pulseless.
These are the symptoms:
-No display
-Won't power up by any means
-No charging light
-No sign of booting up
What I tried:
-Hard reset
-Remove SIM and SD card, still no activity
-Swapped battery of working S3
What should be the next step?. Thankfully warranty period hasn't elapsed yet.
How should I approach now?. Will the warranty company replace the set or more likely create some unsolvable obstacles, like them assuming fall or label the phone rooted etc?
Thanks for your time

Warrant may be void if its rooted or custom rom or modified status or rom counter above zero .
No way to reset those on a non booting phone .
Dropped damage incurred again who knows until they take the phone apart .

If the phone's truly hard-bricked, there's no way the service center would be able to discern that. Dead is dead.
Agreed, if the phone is truly dead no one in the sammy repair could able to detect that.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree, just because the power port has died, by no means means the memory/storage, or anything else for that matter really is down.. (not that it'll come up, just making a point)
it sounds like you really did everything right to troubleshoot it huh.. well let me just throw a few things out, you probably didnt, but hopefully did overlook..
the cord you're trying to charge it with, could it be not working/charging it?
have you tried another cord, or maybe even a USB cord? was it plugged in when it died? some low quality/defective cords can have some weird effects on phones, like less responsive digitizers, or even short out a phone
did you have any custom CPU settings? over/under clock/volt? had you played with you min/max CPU settings?
it doesn't turn on, did you determin this by seeing no display? seeing if there's any hapticfeedback, or even calling it from another phone and seeing if it rings on the callers side.
I know it seems silly but I'm just throwing out things from personal expirence ..
so now your phone really is dead, well having it under warrenty is great. having worked at an AT&T corporate retailer, I can tell you what happens on our side when you bring in a damaged phone.. well try it ourselves, well ask what happened, if you don't know well ask things like, 'did you drop it', 'or it was in contact with water'. (were actually required to ask, since these things aren't covered under warranty. which let me say, is so broken that we push the extended warranty on you, because it covers basically nothing.. we have a quota that says we need to sell X amount of a list of product/services each month.. but I digress).. anyway, once you tell us it just died out of nowhere we take your phone, put it in an envelope and ship it back to the manufacturer. in the mean time well offer you a loaner phone if you need one (just whatever we have on hand at the time, usually phones we get from trade-ins) (you keep your battery and sim) , and we put a 50 dollar hold on your card (yes on a creditcard, not your account) until your phone comes back in and we get our loaner phone. they'll send you a phone back to us, not yours, usually a refurbished version, then we call you and let you know your phones ready.
NEVER have I ever seen or heard anything ever of checking for root. most of our reps don't even know what that is.. once we submit a replacement form, the new phone is on transit to our shop usually by the next day (meaning they send out the replacement before they get the one we sent).
my advice is once you're sure the phone is dead, take it in to your retailer, tell them it died out of nowhere while you were texting, and it won't turn back on. you don't need to go into anymore detail than that..
clearly I have a problem with rambling this morning haha so ill stop talking there. if you have anymore questions tho, ill be happy to answer. goodluck!

Thanks for the detailed reply man, really appreciated. Especially since I was already trying to read the minds of these warranty dealers!
So just a while ago I gave it in for warranty. I was adamant of it going dead while I was doing an sms (although true!).. just said no to whatever cause they tried to find (wasn't any, honest!). They were pressing me though for the graze it got (a month ago).. I said 90% of the phones are scratched, and how many do die? He went okay we'll see then, 'yeah you are right we buy that, most that gets damaged from a fall is a phone with shattered screen!"'. Next question, the tricky one!. Did you modify/update software?
I was like, I keep my phones as stock and was totally acting alien to terms like 'rooting' 'firmware' 'kernel' etc (not being honest, but i'm sure that's not the cause)
He was like okay hand it over, we'll do the rest!
Hopefully they don't ever get to revive the mobo or i'm screwed for real!
my phone just died after flashing morfic A10 kernel. i am running stock rooted rom and the best part my sgs 3 was bought 11/18/12 from target, cant go to download mode, cant go to recovery i even tried adb recovery and download mode hoping to turn on nada, charge for an hour no led flashing. my sgs3 totally dead. called target and they said just bring it and they will replace it with new one if the phone wont turn on. is that mean i will be okay even my phone is rooted?
UPDATE:
Thank God.. got my SIII fixed in warranty, now it's back to life!
Just had a motherboard replacement, no further details given.
Hence kind of proven!:
if the phone is truly dead no one in the sammy repair could able to detect that.

So I screwed up my RAZR by changing system files with root. Summary: Recovery not an option, fastboot only way to go, but, the battery died.
I tried making a motorola factory cable. I tried hotwiring the battery. When all was said and done, I got nowhere.
Then I got my buddies RAZR. Not sure what he did to it, but the screen is shattered. So my thought was, of course, I can use his phone to charge my battery!
It doesn't work. I ask my friend about it, this is what he tells me.
Him: "When we were disabling the phone she lady said that it may turn off the phone completely"
Me: "WHAT?"
Him: "I don't that's just what that verizon lady said. I'm guessing that the phone is all connected by radio waves and crap"
Me: "WHAT?"
Him: "Apparently turned it off"
Me: " Turned...it...off."
Him: "I guess so if it no worky"
Me: "WHAT?"
Him: "with newer phones like that they are able to actually turn on and off the phone and other crap like that"
Me: "WHAT?"
So. I ask you XDA. Once again. Can ya help me...help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
WHAT?
Seriously though, your friend said that a verizon employee disabled his phone? How? did they send a zip and have him install it? What are the circumstances preventing this from being verizon goofing up his gear, warranting them to replace it? Did he already goof it up? Was it already not turning on when he called, and after trying for a bit, verizon verified fubar?

Thank you for replying.
As mentioned above, his screen is shattered. Pretty nicely too. Of his own doing. I would assume he went in to the Verizon store, and the conversation above followed. There should be nothing wrong with the ROM. I have no idea what they could have done to it.
I will tell you this though. I took out his battery, put in mine. Here's what I've got.
When plugging into a charger I get one of three results.
1. White LED that turns on and immediately shuts off
2. Faint...and I mean faint...red LED for a split second that fades
3. Nothing.
Another buddy of mine asked me what happens when I hold the volume down and power for 10 seconds (no not trying to load bootloader)
Zilch. Nada. Nothing happens.
I was looking over at ifixit.com at how to dismantle a RAZR.
Theoretically, using that guide, I could take this screen shattered RAZR's motherboard and attach it to my ROM corrupted RAZR's screen.
If:
1. His motherboard is also destroyed
2. Verizon somehow deactivated the motherboard itself or wiped the rom
3. That guide and others mentioned that there is one unit that once you take apart can not be put back, you have to order a new put together unit. I believe it was talking about the camera area, not sure.
3a. Assuming the camera area is non-replaceable, the phone will not work without it.
3b. They weren't just talking about that protecting cover over the area.
I am much better at fixing problems on a device, then fixing a device itself. Obviously.
Thanks again for replying.
Honestly I am suspecting your friend is mistaking verizon removing his plans from the phone, with bricking it. I haven't heard of verizon intentionally bricking someones phone, even with a cracked screen. the only way I could even see them doing that is with an OTA file, or had him download a corrupted zip, then install it which with a cracked screen is unlikely on both accounts since both actions require user input. If the phone wasn't event on, then it would be impossible. And I mean, why would they do that? If anything they would just want it sent in, not nuke it, then hand it back to the customer. Doesn't mean phone is not screwed( I had a droidx meet a terrible fate via 12 foot drop, screen down onto bricks) just that if it is, it isn't verizons doing. Depending on what happened to it, the board could be all sorts of goofed, and the screen is just what you can physically see.
In light of that, have you considered swapping the screen/digitizer of your bricked phone with the cracked one?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0fSED86mLs
Less messy, less risk, though she won't be as water resistant then, but it is the same steps as disassembling the phone for the motherboard, and you don't have to disrupt as many components, so less opportunity for error.
If you do it, remember that the screen and the digitizer MUST be replaced as a unit

Screen and digitizer, which will be one unit when I take it out of my bricked phone correct?
A second question, even more stupid...what do you think the changes are that my buddies phone is fine and this will work?
In other words, could his phone not be turning on solely because the screen is damaged? Is that likely?
If I were to get this to work the easy way, I would eventually do it the hard way (take his motherboard for my unit) because mine is a bit shinier.
Thanks again.
EDIT: Just an FYI, I'm not stalling on doing this, I currently don't have Torx screwdrivers, I will get hold of some soon. I have been able to get out the batteries with pliers so far.
They are attached, but you can accidently separate them, which then you could be screwed, i personally have never done it so i would suggest you watch and read several tutorials to make yourself really comfortable with the process.
As far as your buddies phone... Completely dependent on how the phone dropped, and how much impact on what part of the phone.... The drop might have knocked the battery circuit loose.... Damaged the camera or other part of the phone disrupting a circuit, or the shock if the drop could have severely damaged the board.... Only one way to find out

So, chief among the many issues I have with this phone is the fact that it will no longer recognize or mount it's own internal SD card aka "sdcard0" in recovery or in the OS. I have wiped the system, I have changed my ROM, I have changed my recovery. I don't want to accept that thing is just broken, but I am starting to lean that way. If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Really I would love any good phone from the S3 to current but I have been for the last year completely broke, and my avenues for replacing it with something different are non existant. My device is probably just a lemon, but there isn't anything I can do and I don't have the $100 dollars Verizone want's so I can replace it with my insuarance.
Problems: I dropped it ONCE and the digitizer cracked, when I replaced it i cleaned it very well and was extra careful, but after a few days dust started to leak in between the LCD and the digitizer and I can't get it out or even figure out how it leaked in. Now the screen touches itself all the time and there isn't anything I can do. The battery was the worst I have ever had, both the original and the replacement and the extended battery isn't much better but it does double the thickness of the phone. It is slow with any ROM I use and for the past couple months it refuses to recognize its own internal SDcard. The extended battery feels like a backpack attached to my phone and I still have to carry a USB cord everywhere I go to charge it and I'm constantly cleaning the screen to try and get it to stop touching it's self.
I tried begging for someones old S3 or comparable older phone on another forum, even offered to trade stuff even though I don't have much but my post was ridiculed mercilessly and then deleted. Now I'm just trying to make do.

I feel the same way, so many good phones coming out and i refuse to loose my unlimited data plan. I am putting all my eggs in the Moto X basket right now. I had the original Droid X and it was an excelent phone, hell my gf still uses it as an e-reader. So I have seen several threads on this. Need your guys help.
This is what I had before **** hit the fan.

So what happen, who knows. I was playing D.O.T before hitting the sack. Battery was at 48% before locking the screen. Thought about charging my phone but decided that my HTC One needed to be charged first. Fast forward 6hrs later, HTC One giving me the green light that its good to go but my Droid is not tuning on. NO CHARGE Light, NO USB CONNETION, NO LIFE. I thought that maybe phone must have died. Bit weird though as it was only 6 hrs and I have never seen any of my phones die in 6hrs and screen off.
I did all of the available troubleshooting as I can think of.
Hold Volume - & Power Button - 30 Secs NO GO
Hold Volume + & Power Button - 30 Secs NO GO
Hold Volume +&- / Power Button - 2 mins NO GO
No go... thought maybe system may have been stuck or super deep sleep.
Apparently i dont have warranty with Best Buy. they scammed me, screw them, for another topic... So
Pulled back battery cover...
Unscrewed the screws that hold battery cable. Pulled out and waited 10 min before replugging it back in. NO GO.....
Took apart phone, took MOBO out, USB chip, top chip that hold the SIM, left everything out for about 12hrs, took a break and put everything together NO GO
So I consolidated with some friends and they had some success on their about this matter.....
Connect USB into Computer for 10 min then battery reset by Volume -+ and Power Button for 2 min NO GO
Charged for 12rhs Via Computer and did above NO GO
Charged for 12hrs via Power outlet NO GO
At this point Im leaning towards hard brick but idk how, didnt really do anything last night. Just sat there next to my other phones. No auto updates or anything that would require system reboot of anything of the sort.
At this time I have no charge light, no sign of life, and im about out of options at this time. I would send out to JTAG team to get it fixed but I dont have the cash to send out. My concern is that I recently bought the phone back in July and now Im bummed that it deosnt work. Money well spent but now a brick. Reverted back to my Note 2 and Moto X for the time being but would like to have her back up and running as I personally liked the phone.
Anyone recommend any option that I havet listed above or is there a way I can JTAG the sucker at home?
Also, as you can imagine from the the above, I have no way to adb and try to force something in it if software related....
*sigh....

Sounds like its becoming a normal......
Tell verizon your charger port just stopped working and you tried multiple chargers and it still won't charge until it powered off. They'll replace it.

Wow, you've got an HTC One, Moto X, Droid DNA AND a Note 2?
Sorry, not helping.
Sounds like the board possibly took a dump... Just speculation...

So called Verizon and told them that my phone has does not turn on at all. they troubleshooted with me on the phone.....
Nothing worked......
They said that they would send one out but I had to ask....
I have a small crack on the screen and that it didn't affect the phones ability to be used right. They said that well they could replace it but if the phone is serviced and they find out that the crack was some how the main reason that it was the problem (Keep in mind this is Verizon we're talking about) they would slap on the the full price of the phone on my bill.....
To my knowledge and experience sounds like the board took a crap and even if the replaced the screen, the board would still need to be changed out. If they say it was the screens fault, I cant say it wasn't it was the board because they'll question why I think that and how would I know, did you open it?
I did save the void sticker and it does show small signs that I was in there but I hate to risk having my account charged at full price for a phone.
Such a dilemma as its a brand new phone besides the crack in the screen. I talked to my coworkers about this and they said I could wait for a DNA to come in as a sale or total lose and try to snag the MOBO but who's to say that phone isn't blacklisted or worse.
All of the phones I have are what I call Frankenstein phones. I work in a shop that repairs cell phones/xboxs/ps3/computers and we pay for broken crap. Most of the time its a screen problem. They dont get insurance and dont take care of their phones so I scrap them and use different parts from other phones to build one. The only phones I eve bought was the DNA, Droid Razr, well most droid serious going back to OG..... just a Droid person.... stick it to IOS and Apple, lol.....
But back to the problem, I could wait for something to come in but again, they usual call VZW and blacklist it and then only good for screen, usb chip, and SIM/earphone jack chip.
What bothers me is that I bought the phone with my own money versus having parts come in and just putting them together so having a brand new toy break hits hard.....
I tried to see if there is any at home JTag is available but all i find is links to send it out to online place that services everyone....
Try a different battery. Maybe in those 6 hours the battery the battery discharged below the "point of no return". No battery, no nothing... Even a super bricked DNA will light the led when charging... But take out the battery and you dont get anything...

I have had similar issues. This has happened to me at least twice with the same dna I have. When I tried to charge it the orange light would not even come on.
My solution was to open it up and unplug the battery. If you have not done this yet you probably should. There are two tiny screws holding it onto the motherboard, take those off and pop the ribbon off the motherboard. After that, put it back together and try to turn it on. Make sure your power button gets lined up correctly. If you need to, check some tutorials on youtube on how to take the dna apart.

might try to PM @Zarboz .. beens is you fix stuff and he has a JTAG service maybe youll can work something out or if you read his profile he will do it for free with some conditions ... sorry .... and good luck
i have taken the phone apart already, down to the last bolt and sticker in there. nothing..... I tried a different battery from another DNA, no dice. So I can rule out that battery didnt past it point of no return but also means Im still stuck with a brick phone.....bwaaaaaaaa
To anyone who has this problem
I've repaired my DNA two times for this reason. I've try everything, I've taken it apart completely and reassembled and nothing. I end up buy one with a broken screen to salvage the motherboard and BINGO. Got it back to life. (about a year ago)
The second time I got the same problem and just ordered a salvaged motherboard from EBAY. Got it working back again (this was 3 or 4 months ago).
Today guess what happend again??... It died yet again. Same thing... No life whatsoever.
After this I'm pretty sure this is the same fault over and over again. Just a poor quality motherboard, it just dies after some time. For me it took from 1 year to 3 or 4 months. Every time the only component that I swapped was the mainboard, nothing else.
I'm tired of spending money on a phone that by now I'm sure i'll die again. :crying:
This is very sad because I love this phone too much just to let it collect dust on the bottom of a drawer. It reminds me of my old HD2.
I will probably try and find yet another board for it on EBAY.
I know it's stupid to fix something that will almost inevitably die again. But thats love I guess.....
This is just my personal experience with this issue. Please try every other solutions before you buy a replacement board.
PS: sorry about my english. It is not my primary language.
Its sad how common ive seen this issue around the Internet and still no straight forward fix or reason. Just casjy playing some og angry birds and my DNA just decides to turn off. RIP I guess, it was a good run.
My dna died today.
I have not taken it apart yet, but I guess I have tried all the other alternatives.
