[Q] Help with EFS pro/ rooting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been combing these forums for a solution for my problem but can't seem to find one....
I've been using a guide on androidjinn to root my phone and install jelly bean.
I've had problems getting EFS pro to recognise my phone.
It simply says "device not connected" even though my computer recognises the device. What i have done so far -
*i have all the latest usb drivers installed*.
*I've tried it with USB debugging enabled (and disabled). *
*i've taken out the external SD.*
*I've also used a newer version (2.0.17) as well as the version in the guide above.*
*I've attempted all above on a friend's laptop (so it's not my computer)*
A simple question would be - do I need to root my phone before I can back up my EFS (I'm assuming efs pro allows me not to have to do this)? The one in the guide "superoneclick" doesn't seem to work with my phone either.
Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong? or have any alternatives for backing up my EFS with (or without rooting), or a rooter that will work (superoneclick just freezes for me)
any help would be much appreciated as this has been a week long headache for me!
thanks in advance.

I should add, I've installed kies as well in an attempt to update the usb drivers (which was as painfully slow as itunes!) it had problems recognising my phone as well...
I can still look at my phone's files and folders on my computer/ file explorer, cut/paste move files around etc.
I installed Odin and it can't seem to recognise my phone either. I figure it's a USB problem. I'd say it's my cable but it works fine for using my phone like a hardrive.

I not sure but i think you do need to root your phone to backup EFS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 try this to root your phone??
hope thats helped a little. tho. there does seem to be some sort of underlying usb issue that i have no advise on as i've never come accross it. sorry. Good luck (???usb debug is selected etc???)

Yes, you need a rooted phone in order to backup EFS (by design/for obvious reasons. Imagine if 'ordinary users' had the ability to potentially delete EFS folders/files ?).
When Odin won't work, it's a matter of being methodical, so....
Stuff to try when Odin won't work (not all of this will apply to your situation):-
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Ensure Kies & it's processes aren't running in Windoze task manager. Kill them if they are.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again.
*Check the rom/kernel you download for corruption. Programs like 7Zip, IZarc, WinRar, etc will allow you to 'test' the rom file you download. If there are any errors/any of the files fail the test, bad download. Try again/try downloading with a different internet connection if it keeps happening.
*Run Windoze Update.
*And if all this fails, try a different PC. If it won't work first time on the 2nd PC, go thru the above steps.
For some reasons, n00bs seem to think newer is better, and many people have been having problems flashing with Odin 3. Don't use it. Use an earlier version (search on here/Google). Many people have found as soon as they try an earlier version it works first go. So if you have been trying with Odin 3, try an earlier version before you go thru the above list.

And dont attempt anything until you get Odin recognizing your phone.
If you flash something through recovery/cwm,you can get situations where the phone wont boot and recovery/cwm is lost.

[Q] [HELP] Odin not detecting my Galaxy S2 after i9100xxkp8

Hey,
I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but couldn't find the thread. I wanted to install CWM on my phone, and installed i9100xxkp8 to root it later. Now once i installed i9100xxkp8 using Odin, Odin doesn't detect my phone anymore. The laptop I'm using is detecting it fine when the phone is switched on, but as soon as I switch to download mode, it says the USB device is not recognised.
I've a feeling this may be due to samsung MTP drivers in the phone?
Since I can't run Odin, i can't install CWM, and can't get out of this old buggy OS!
anybody has any ideas?
Thanks!
Saad Waseem.
uninstall the KEIS and reinstall and reboot PC and try...
---------- Post added at 10:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:23 AM ----------
if no hope after all the possible ways...
you can try this :
Root your phone with this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
and download Mobile Odin, install CF-root kernel from that...
Mobile Odin thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
then you can get out of this buggy ROM, by flashing any custom ROM.
all that or simple put your PC online, every time you flash new ROM, windows install drivers, after that it will work.
that's for windows 7, cant say for other OS.
also try changing cable / usb port of laptop
einstall the samsung drivers and odin will work...

Sorry I am on work..........
Did you try to rectify connection problem first as all other suggested....
See I gave you a suggetion and a link to another thread which is working perfect for most of the users and also sticked by Moderator on his sticky thread, please go through that thread to find out wheather such error is reported or not.
please check, there must be a solution for your problem...
I suffered the same problem as you, and fixed it by flashing through ODIN another capable CWM kernel.
In my case, N.E.A.K. kernel.
Hope that helps
Flash a Kernel via Odin, from here
I suggest LPB, LPQ, or LPS. Good luck

Why on earth would he want to flash one of those three if he is on XXKP8?
I have exactly the same problem:
My phone is recognised when switch on normally. When in download mode I get the "USB device is not recognised"
This means I can't use Odin to flash a new anything, as it won't recognise the device when it's in download mode! Is there a problem with the USB drivers on the phone (I have a ROM install crash on me - thank you Keis!) Is there any way to fix them. Is there any other way to get around the problem?
It's not a problem with the USB cable, or the USB socket, or the PC - there is something wrong with the "drivers?" being used/invoked by the phone in Download mode.
"It's not a problem with the USB cable, or the USB socket, or the PC - there is something wrong with the "drivers?"
OK, that being the case, time to think logically...
If you have Kies installed on your PC - uninstall it, reboot, re-download it, reinstall it, reboot. If you don't have it installed, download/install it & reboot. Also run Windoze update. When you run Odin, you must run it as admin on the PC you're using. And most importantly, when you do run Odin, check task manager to ensure Kies or any of its processes aren't running in the background. If they are, kill them.
Also, despite you saying it isn't one of these issues, rather than saying 'but I know it's not this ! (even tho I haven't tried/tested for problems around these)' try different USB cables (use the one supplied with the phone if you're not now), different USB ports (must use a powered/mainboard port) and also try different versions of Odin (Google them).
Thanks for the quick response:

-I did this as my first step, Although having Kies active as a process borked my flash (my bad - forgot it was installed - usually just use the Google drivers from the dev kit), it has never prevented Odin from seeing my phone in download mode before.

I have tried a different cable, a different port (all of them) a powered hub etc...
I have previously flashed this phone with my current version of Odin. There is no reason that any of the above should apply to my case (I know logic doesn't always apply, sometimes...China...
Again. Everything worked fine, I flashed the kernels and various ROMs without issue. I had a bad flash (via odin) that hung. On reboot I was able to recover the phone via CWM back to 4.0.3 (ie. the version prior to the failed flash.)
The phone and computer chat happily when the phone in on normally (dev mode and normal). When I boot into Download mode I get the error, hence it would appear that the issue lies with whatever driver is invoked by the phone in download mode - the question is, how do I fix it? To be clear, Odin sees the phone when it is booted normally, but not when in download mode.
I am at a loss, I assume something in the nand was corrupted during the flash - not sure exactly what...
Boy is my face red!
Having tried every combination of cable / usb port I could, I managed to dig out an old dual usb powered cable (takes power from a 2nd usb port to power the device) and it worked! I guess it just wasn't getting enough power from a single usb port. Not sure why my powered usb hub didn't work - guess it's just broken .
Anyway - hope this helps someone else - I know how frustrating I found this whole affair. Thanks for pointing me back in the right direction MistahBungle - saved a lot of heartache!
No probs. Glad you got it working

[Q] Boot Loop help

Alright, so I feel like a huge noob :| but i Boot Looped my Samsung Galaxy SII, I was trying to flash a new ROM but they kept failing, and I didn't do a backup the second time I formatted my phone (after restoring it from the first time I BLed it tonight). Also, I've seen on a few threads that I can do the Down Volume + Power to go to the downloader screen and then go to ODIN and flash a stock ROM but i cannot get my phone and ODIN to connect to each other (I made sure I had all KIES programs closed via task manager and that it connects via Device Manager).
Any Advice???
Update: Alright, after downloading like 2 different versions of ODIN I finally got it to connect!!!! But now I'm stuck, I cannot find a rom thats a .tar nor the stock rom for my phone (samsung galaxy s II I9100 sprint) and yes, i have looked on the thread where it has all the stock roms.
advise?

Try everything on this list if necessary. And if all this fails, try a different PC. If the different PC doesn't work first try, go thru as many of the above steps as you need to with the 2nd PC. If that still doesn't work, either user error or possibly HW problem with phone.

@Sejk97 Hahahaha ;-) Classic.
I've tried almost all of those and nothing....if none work any ideas on what to do???
And to the guy above me with the huge font :| i did all 8 steps 3 times before I ever thought about posting this :|
Or simply be connected to internet when you plug your phone in Odin mode. Specially if windows 7, it will install some drivers and will work after that
@atifsh I'm always connected to the internet, no go :\
@MistahBungle I tested both the different ROMs and they both tested fine
If you've tried all those steps with one PC & it's a no go, you'll need to try a different PC as per my post. Again, if still no go with the 2nd PC, who knows ? Could be anything.
Edit to add - If you've tried 'almost all of those', you need to try the things you haven't tried yet (almost all isn't all).

Sprint user means you are in the wrong place, and have been flashing the wrong firmware to your Epic 4G Touch, aka SPH-D710. (look on the label under your battery) That's a totally different phone from an I9100. Your boot screen reads I9100 because you've been flashing I9100 firmwares.
I'd advise you to go to the Epic 4G Touch forums for help.

[Q] Note stuck in recovery/odin screen

My phone has the AT&T installed ICS, using odin and the ics .tar files my friend found for me the phone went through most of the process, and failed right at the end. It is now stuck at the recovery mode screen and I can't get Kies to recognize it at all, but it is recognized by both computers I have tried it on. I am really not sure what exactly I can do to get it back running again. I have tried to read all I can, but honestly I just don't know what I am doing enough to be sure of what to do next to recover it and if that relates to other problems people have had that have been solved.
I found this post about odin tips for better success - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863995, but nothing I have seen has helped me from it. I found a few other occurrences of the same thing, but no solution within those threads, so I have no idea how even to proceed.
Any help is appreciated!
Make sure you reboot your pc, start odin, put phone in recovery, then connect usb cable. Make sure Kies isn't running in the background.
Agreed....
Run the process again........but you must ensure a clean working environment, and "NO" kies running while Odin is running....g
I did those steps multiple times on two separate computers. The first initially didn't even have kies installed, just the samsung drivers, but Odin failed repeatedly without even really starting. I restarted computers no USB hubs, tried different cables, different USB ports, nothing changes. Even the kies recovery doesn't recognize the phone at all, but it does still appear to the computers. I appreciate the responses, but what other steps can I take to ensure I am doing this properly? Could it potentially have been the tar file I have, and if so, can I just do the process from this screen, and where can I find the correct files if it wasn't include in one of the tons of threads on here about it?

Go to samfirmware.com, and restore the device from the website direct...
It appears that you may have the download mode drivers, or a portion of them damaged or unreadable...( due in large part, to the fact that Odin "must" complete the flash process, then disconnect and reboot the device, in order for the flash to stick, and this didnt happen)
Be very careful here my friend, you are one step away from needing a JTAG repair....(BAD)
The website will push a recovery rom image to your device without the need for Odin drivers....and should give you a factory rom that functions correctly....
I dont have a direct link...(sorry) but this is the last attempt before the device is needing much deeper attention....g
Again..its samfirmware.com, or very near that....g
Edit: I'm very sorry you are having this issue, but we are here to help you through it.....So take a few deep breaths, and relax a bit, then hit the website I gave you..
then look in the tools section at the top, and go from there.....you got this....g
Ok, I will take a look at that when I get home! typical of me to push it to the limits. Thanks for the help, much appreciated!

Try this version of ODIN instead. Its what I use.
If that doesnt work then you should definitely get yourself a official Samsung cable in case there are pin connections missing in the non-samsung that is needed.
Also, no you dont need to change kernel when using download mode. You're using download mode right not recovery?? (Volume DOWN + Home + Power).

Yeah, what files are you actually trying to flash? Give specific details of which specific filenames your trying to flash and link to where you downloaded files.

Nothing seems to be working to get ODIN to detect it :/
I tried to flash ROM with CWM it just says "(bad)"
If you've tried everything (and I mean everything. Not 2 or 3 things) including trying with different PC's, without a screenshot/pic of the Odin output we'd have absolutely no idea why it's failing. However, if you'd care to give us a pic/screenshot of the Odin output when you try & flash, maybe we can figure out why.

I would have thought my post was pretty clear. You're obviously out of your depth & shouldn't be messing with your phone. What we need is a pic/screenshot of the Odin screen from your PC when it's failing like this
I just got too excited when everyone was rooting their phones , shouldn't have done it at all :/
My problem is no (yellow bar) is coming out from odin when i plug in download mode at first it could but after i formatted my phone from CWM it couldnt detect anymore , and I tried with two other laptops and even a different cable
Im so sorry to take up your time :/
(ODIN just looks like normal when i plug everything in :S)
OK. I thought Odin could detect OK but the flash was failing at that stage. So you still can't get the phone & PC to recognise each other given everything you've tried.
Honestly, I can't think of anything else you can do. I'd suggest you keep trying tho. Not a lot else you can do beyond that (Unless there's something really simple/obvious we're all missing here).
Edit -Right. List everything, and I mean everything you've tried to try and get the phone & PC to recognise each other/get Odin to work. Every single little step. Details. The more details you provide, the better the chance you get your phone fixed. The less details you provide, the less likely that is to happen.

Ok , I have tried
-Installing Kies , samsung Usb drivers and every driver i could fine for samsung (ADB)
- I tried both ODIN v1.85 ,3.04
-different USB cables
-Diferent pc's (2 laptops)
-Friends S III ( sadly even his wasn't detected)
-Formatting every single option there was in CWM
-tried flashing using CWM (failed with installation aborted *bad*)
- I even ended Kies processor before running ODIN
- windows update
You missed:-
Different USB ports (and different USB ports on different PC's - you must use a 'mainboard' port, if you don't know what it is, Google it).
Try Odin V1.3
Have you used the USB cable that came with the phone ? Uninstall Kies. Reboot. Redownload Kies from Samsung website. Reinstall. Reboot. Run Odin as administrator in Windows (R-click the Odin .exe & choose 'run as administrator').

There, your friend's SIII wasn't recognised. You wanna pay a friend a visit to use his/her pc with no kies pre-installed. You go and get it's latest version and repeat all steps.
When you say "kies processor" you mean one kies application running or all 4 that there are actually running?

Well now I have reinstalled Kies , but this time when i plug the usb be in , I can hear my pc detecting it but ( Mobile USB Modem 1.0) fails to install in windows update .
and i've tried with my 2 other laptops without kies installed
oh and I end task for KiesPDLR.exe (said by someone in a post here in Xda)
Are you hitting 'end process tree' when you close Kies in Windoze Task Manager ? It's important anything associated w/Kies is closed, not just the main application.
