[Q] My stock Contacts app was deleted/uninstalled. How to replace? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I'm not sure how it happened, but my stock Contacts app is no longer on my phone. The Contacts storage is there, as an addon dialer can still make calls to existing contacts. I cannot, however, add contacts or do anything else that requires the Contacts app.
My Note has never been rooted and is running only apps from the Google Play store. I am hoping that there is a way to simply reinstall the apk if one is available, but I am interested in any suggestions people have.
Thanks!

If your not rooted then I'm not sure how a system app was uninstalled, did you double check your app drawer it could just be deleted from your homescreen

It didn't make sense to me either, but it is gone from the app drawer. I use the ContactsEX app and it can pull from the Contacts Storage, but when I attempt to add contacts, edit contacts, etc., the stock Contacts app does not appear.
A few minutes ago I did download from one of the forums here the stock Contacts apk. When I attempted to install the apk, installation failed because a file of that name already existed. Since that suggests that the original apk is there somewhere, would a hard/factory reset work to get the Contact app back?

go to system settings and apps. you want to view all. see if it lists contacts. if it is there then the third party conacts app may be the problem. make sure it is not set to be default app. maybe try clearing data for the app and reboot.

It wasn't in the system apps list. I uninstalled the third party contacts app, but then I had no way to get to my contacts or dialer. When I reinstalled the third party contacts app, I again had access to the existing contacts and could place calls. Still no way to access the stock contacts/dialer or edit existing contacts.
If a system reset would fix this, that's cool. I just don't want to do a reset and then still have the problem.

A factory reset should fix this, maybe consider rooting and flashing a rom

If I fix this, then my wife says she will take this phone and I can buy a Note II. Then I will root.

If that's the case then factory reset or Odin back to stock and get a note II man.

Simply rename the new contacts apk by adding a single number or letter to the end ...then it should install, and avoid the duplicate file failure ....
Or ....get a note 2.....that'll fix it ....LOL ...g

Contact manager?

Now that my Nook is rooted, I'm trying to find a contact manager that will sync with Google contacts. Not having the phone portion of the Android system makes it difficult to load contacts!
Any ideas?
I have also been looking for this without luck. Every contacts app that I have tried force closes. I even copied the CM7 stock app from my Nook Color to my Tablet, but got the same result. Seems something is missing from our Android build....but I don't know what....
I'm using Go Contacts. It's free on the Market.
That did it! Thanks.

I'm having a hard time getting Go Contacts to sync with my gmail contacts for some reason.
I all I have to do is download/install, and then make sure it shows my gmail account in the app??
Update
And I need to learn to try every possible thing before I ask for help...I'm not actually retarded, I promise.
For those who are having problems with getting your contacts to sync:
1)Download and install Go Contacts
2)Open Go Contacts
3)Press Menu Key
4)Press Setting Icon
5)Press Backup and Recovery
6)Press Account Sync
7)Select whichever account's contacts you want to sync
8)Check the box to begin syncing Contacts
Anyone had problems creating or editing contacts? I found that for me, this and other functions weren't working until I installed the stock email app using Indirect's method. (Thread is in this same section.)
Now Go Contacts properly allows me to add/edit contacts (I guess it needs to use an outside contact editor for this, and B&N's stock doesn't work.) Now contacts-to-email functions properly.
A nice bonus is that street addresses will open in Google Maps (or Google Earth if you have either installed) and phone numbers will open a chat in textPlus.
I think the stock email app also fixed some issues with other contact managers that were crashing or giving 'no application for that' errors before. I was curious and reinstalled a few that had failed before, and some worked. But overall, none seem as seamless as Go Contacts, so I wouldn't recommend anything else.
I have the stock email installed as well as go contacts...they sync fine but I still can not edit or add contacts...both installed to system/app and both have permissions set to:
Read write
Read
Read
Can not get go contact to edit/add
I shut down and restarted....no luck...anyone have any ideas? Maybe remove the stock social.apk?

When you say you can't get go contact to edit/add, what happens when you tap the edit icon on the top right of the screen? Can you actually edit the details? Do the changes not save?
Go Contacts works perfectly for me.
Nothing happens when I press the + button. When I long press on a contact it takes me to a menu so I can choose edit...but nothing pulls up. Thanks for responding
Anybody know where I can get the apk for Go Contacts? I see it's not in the Amazon App Store and I don't want to send it to my phone to get the apk. Thanks.

Do you have a google account set up?
When I hit the + it says "Create contact under account" and lists the gmail account I set up for the stock email account. When I choose it, I can create new contacts.
Edit brings up the same contact editor under the same account.

System of each application????
could you elaborate a little more please?
sorry wrote it wrong you will need to wipe data of each app seperately from setting
Use Titanium Backup. Backup all the apps, then factory reset.
Or an easier solution: In Go Launcher, hide the icon (press Menu button in the App Drawer) of the apps you don't want your friend to see.
Also you can go to settings and remove accounts from various apps in the "Accounts and sync" tab, thats how I remove my email without deleting everything.

"Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped"

Hello guys, i finally update my phone with neat rom and install the cf-root lp8 without problems and everything works ok.
the only problem is that when i try to use the phone, after i tip one number my phone crashes and says "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped" and a few seconds later it says that TwLauncher is not responding.
I went to google sync and disable the contacts sync, rebooted but nothing changes, it keeps giving me that error. Is there a way to fix it without restoring to factory settings or something like that?
better ask in the neat rom thread.......and try factory wipe.
Hello,
did you restored your contacts with Titanium or other after flashing the new ROM? could you give us a little more info on it?
Ciao
thanks for the answers!
i cant post on the topic, i dont have enough posts
No, i didnt restore the contacts, i just install the cf-root lp8 and afterwards i install the rom, i have to use titanium now to restore the contacts?
OP reads more like a bad flash wipe and reflash .
TB only backs up contacts if asked to .
jje
I can call my contacts without a problem, what i cant do is type a number using the phone, once i put one number it crashes, thats the strange thing
Could you try a reflash?
I'm in the same boat, my problem start after i use DarkyOTA visualmod dialer.
I dunno how to rollback and uninstall that :-(
any help.
I'm looking for a clear and step by step how to flash ICS 4.0.4 to my i9100m Bell SGS2, if any link can be paste here ?
thank's
I just sent and pm to salesale and he gave me the answer in 1 minute:
settings/applications/all and clear data in Contacts storage and Contacts
Now it works perfect!
Same issue
I'm running Pure ICS v7.3 and I've ended up having this issue twice now.
I'm not sure if this is related to the ROM itself. Different users with using different ROMs seem to be having this same issue so I'll continue this thread before asking elsewhere.
I can mention that I have read the full thread for Pure ICS without finding anything that seems related to my issue.
Background:
Phone: SGSII
Android version: 4.0.3
Kernel: [email protected] #3
What I've done:
Since I got this issue first time I wiped data, restored to factory, wiped Dalvik, cache, reseted permissions, reinstalled the ROM. Probably wiped data and cache after install as well (don't know if that matters).
After doing all this everything worked fine, just as it did after first install.
The issue appears after a couple of days.
Issue:
Starting dialer crashes Contacts prompting: "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped".
This time around I've tried to uncheck sync with Contacts with Google account, restarted phone, rechecked - Still same issue.
Tried going Settings --> Applications --> All
Then I wiped data for Contacts and Contacts Storage.
Still same issue.
Tried doing the uncheck --> check thingie with Google account again. Still no success.
I've been doing this in various combinations and I'm not able to stop the Dialer from crashing.
Contacts works just fine otherwise.
Last thing I will mention is that I have an app called HaxSync which also interacts with contacts. I've both tried to unchech sync for that app and the first time around (before wipe) I tried uninstalling that app. No success there either.
The wierd thing is that everything is working like a charm. A couple of days goes by without me installing anything, not doing any settings change or anything.
Then this error reoccours.
Sorry for the long story but I wanted to give as specific details as possible.
One more thingie!
I just remembered that I've used SMS Backup & Restore to restore my messages each time I've installed this ROM. I don't know if this is relevant but I thought I'd mention it.
I am running Spike pure ICS too and the contacts app crashes every time I try to delete a contact. The contact gets deleted but the app hangs for a bit and then crashes. I am not sure if it is related, I am not using the dialer much. But the contacts app is definitely not working correctly.

Try the same thing that the OP did, go to Settings > Applications > All > Clear data in Contacts and Contacts Storage. I had this issue a while ago, trying to delete a duplicate contact and the Contacts.app would freeze and then crash. Updated a while ago to latest HydrogenICS and no problems?
Chris.
"Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped"
Go to Settings > Applications > All > Clear data in Contacts and Contacts Storage.
It worked for me!
SGS2 ICS4.0
Thank you!

Remember to backup the local contacts.
Unfortunately, this did not help me. The contacts app still crashes. It is either connected to the rom or to duplicate contacts from WhatsApp. It didn't happen with an older version of Spike pure ICS but I didn't have WhatsApp at the time either. I guess I just have to wait until a new version of the rom comes out.

Clearing Contacts and Contacts Storage solved the issue at first.
The issue reoccurs if I reject a call. Then it's back to crashing as soon as I open the dialer.
I'm not running WhatsApp and never had it installed.
Still can't use dialer.
Issue solved.
Yesterday I upgraded to Spikes Pure ICS 7.5 and the issue was resolved.
My dialer do no longer crash and I can reject calls without the issue reappearing.
I don't know what has changed since version 7.3 but I'm just glad it's solved

Hi mates!
Could anyone assist. I've installed Hydяa-H²o v1.4.1 and it's good. But it's Contacts making me mad - there in no option to show only contacts with numbers and thanks to google I have many emails listed. Moreover I badly need to restore my call log (with My backup root) after restore Contacts crasher once I launch it.
How can I swith hydras contacts.apk by Sams original one?
Also who knows how to set stock samsungs lockscreen instead installed in this ROM?
Delete all accounts under accounts and sync. Reboot then add your accounts and sync them back.

HELP PLEASE!! Contacts Linked2SD and dialer wont load!!

Hi
I have a Motorola XT319 Android 2.3
I tried to save some space linking (LINK2SD) the contacts app and contact storage app.
I first had to Move them to user app (as they were system apps) and then proceeded to link. All went well but when I tried to open the PHONE app y will NOT load. Nor the CONTACTS app. I tried to UNlink it and switch it back to system app but it wouldn't.
I can't make any phone calls. PLEASE HELPPPP!!!!
Problem Update
I got no answers so far so I deleted all cache and data files and restablished factoru settings. Since reboot, I keep getting to error messages, One recarding android.process.acome and the other Google Frameworks. They keep poping up over and over. The dialer will know load, but the contacts WILL NOT.
Contact Sync is IMPOSIBLE and even though I unselect the sync option, the errors keep poping up.
I believe the problem has someting to do with the contact app.
PLEASE HELP!!!!

[Q] GS3 Messaging app

I have a galaxy s3 and have been using it for the past 2 weeks. The default messaging app is not functioning properly.
Even though there are several messages and conversations in the inbox, it shows an empty inbox! After waitin for a minute or two, the messages appear. But it takes a very long time to open a single conversation. [conversations do not have more than 100 texts, there are only 6 conversations].
And sometimes, i just get a dialogue box "Messaging has stopped working". And then i'm not able to open the messaging app at all.
Restarting the phone solves the problem temporarily. The same problem starts again after a couple of hours of restarting.
Does this happen in all GS3s? All the apps are up to date. Clearing the ram doesnt help. What do i do ?
(1) are you rooted or anything
(2) did you try to delete the data/cache of the messaging app in the Application Management settings? (this might delete your sms tough)
(3) did you try a factory reset?
I never had problems with the stock SMS app though.

Rooted: No. I'm running the default rom.
Factory reset: I'm facing this problem since the last factory reset only. It was fine before that.
Cache files: No. I did not clear any files. I'll try clearing the 'data'.
You could try an alternative app such as gosms which u have used before on my old HTC desire as I hated the default messages app. It is a good app allowing you to theme and the such. Though personally I prefer the new Samsung app. But if I was having problems that would be my first port of call.
