[Q] Dropbox camera upload from a different folder? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I know Dropbox for Android (and iOS for that matter) will automatically upload pictures you take with the camera. But I want to have it also upload pictures that I save, either from a text message or from a website. Those pictures are saved to the "Downloads" folder, which I don't think Dropbox is watching for pictures. If I move pictures to the "DCIM/Camera" folder, SOMETIMES pictures will upload, but not always.
So is there a way to force Dropbox to auto-upload the pictures I save? I want that to happen so the pictures will be renamed to the date it was taken, which is why simply sharing them to Dropbox won't do.
Thanks!

Don't think so hmm. Maybe try to force a media rescan via one of those apps on the play store?
Alternatively use an app like Dropsync to do one way uploads or 2 way syncing to any folder to Dropbox.

Dropbox does watch the Downloads folder. Actually, it monitors every folder on the USB storage partition of your phone. For example, screenshots I take on my phone get uploaded to my Dropbox as part of the "camera upload" function of the official Dropbox app, even though I don't get those pictures by using the phone's camera nor are they stored in the DCIM folder.
To see this, take a screenshot of any screen on your phone (for my wife's HTC Vivid it's Power + Volume Up, for my SGS2 Skyrocket it's Power + Home). It'll get saved to /storage/Pictures/Screenshots (your exact path name may be different depending on how your phone designates the USB storage partition of your phone - note this is note the SD card, but the accessible storage on your phone when you mount it as a USB drive when plugging it into your computer). You should eventually see that those screenshots are uploaded to the same folder on your Dropbox as all the photos you take with your phone's camera.
If you're not seeing that, I'm not sure what the issue would be. I'd recommend going to system settings > applications > dropbox > force stop > clear cache > clear data > uninstall, then reinstall Dropbox and set up camera upload again, take a few photos with the camera to make sure it works, then retaking some screenshots to make sure that that works as well.

by default, it upload to "Camera Uploads" dropbox, can I change the default folder to other folder in dropbox? sub folder?
Thanks

No feasible solution

I don't think dropbox watch ALL folders. I noticed pictures for Whatsapp / eye-fi / any other apps which stores pictures in their own folder do not get backed up. Please advise if anyone have solution as to enable users as to which folders they want to upload to dropbox from their Android.

I use these two apps to sync additional folders on my phone to Dropbox's Camera Uploads. It may not be the exact solution you're looking for, but it works for me.
DropSync & CloudPipes

Try pasting photos in camera folder and rename similar to photo taken with camera. That may work

New Dropbox Beta = 5GB of space

Anyone using Dropbox? Anyone want to upgrade from their 2GB cap to a 5GB cap while using the newest additions?
All details can be found here.
Checking it out now, I was about to install Dropbox on all the computers at my job for the extra space.
Sugarsync has been nothing but frustration lately. Thanks a bunch!

Never mind need to upload photo/videos to get the space, just uploaded all those roms for nothing. Lol
It seems that if you upload quite a bit of data, then delete it, the new storage cap remains. So Im trying to upload as much as I can to get Dropbox to match it, then remove whatever I dont need and still keep the space.
Some people are reporting the storage isn't getting added yet but the limit is gone.
I myself haven't got anything either and I followed the steps, guess its too much at once for them to handle.
I've just uploaded 2 avi files via the desktop client, I am now at 112% space?????

Seeing as how I got an extra 48GB (totaling 51.62GB) by logging into dropbox on an ICS device, don't really need the extra 5gb, but will do so to remove the file size limit .

51gb!
So...Referral, .Edu, Beta, ICS, what else is there?
Read the thread, folks. It says only automatic photo and video uploads count. So sitting there uploading and deleting roms isn't doing you any good.
How can I see if the upload size limit has been removed?
Why wouldn't they put the "Camera Uploads" folder under the "Photos" folder? You can't do gallery view unless they're in the Photos folder...
Oh well, I prefer using Picasa on my computer to rename and organize my pics before I upload them anywhere.

Oh ok, I need to grab myself an edu email to get that double referral MB.
That 48gb would be awesome if it was permanent.
I just copied over 5GB of pictures. It says its going to take 32 hours to upload :-/
It has already told me that its upgraded my Dropbox account to 2.5GB.

The 'Photos' (and 'Public') folders are less private than anything outside these folders. Source
From this another Dropbox help page, it says that "The Photos folder automatically creates online galleries. Any image files you move or copy to your Photos folder are automatically included in an online gallery anyone can view from the Dropbox website.". It means that you don't have to create a public view link, it's automatically created. So anyone who gets your leaked photo gallery link can enjoy them and you can't control that.
For folders outside Public and Photos, everything is private and you can selectively makes things public/private at your discretion.
I think it's good that they are not mixing up the privacy settings of Photos and Camera Uploads.

I'm sitting in my desk recording videos then uploading it since I don't have 5gb of pictures/videos.
So glad my work has some nice upload speeds, taking advantage of it as much as I can.

Cool, thanks for that explanation!
Thanks red for finding this. I found this trick to upload a huge amount of files. In the camera turn the video recording to 1080p. Then press the record button and leave your phone upside down for some time. After 10 minutes the video took up 1 gb.

You can also double your referrals (500 MB each!) with an edu email. And yes, it's retroactive
Anyone else getting a force close if you go into the app, hit "Uploads" at the top, then click "Photos or videos" at the bottom? It still uploads stuff fine so I can get the extra space. I had this FC on stock 2.3.4 and I'm getting it on SHOstock now as well.

Camera Pictures to DropBox?

I have about 1 gig of Pictures on my Prime Camera I want to upload to DropBox. I am in the Camera App, is there a way to upload Multiple Pictures from Camera to DropBox? I can only see how to do 1 picture at a time. The reason I asked was this article I found about getting up to 3 gig of Extra DropBox space for Free.

There's a setting in dropbox somewhere that allows all pics to be uploaded.
You can send albums just select it and use the dropbox share .Or if in an album select all pictures then unselect ones you don't want and send .
If you didn't notice the bar at top once you select 1 item that's actually a drop down menu that has "select all".
Just tested with both an album and multi files works no problem.

Just download the beta apk and once it's setup it will automatically upload any pics in your dcim folder, it did on mine. It should also give you free space up to 5gb more. After that it automatically uploads the pictures as you take them, very nice.

Can this Folder upload be done though the Camera App? Also when I did check DropBox it was uploading all my Pictures in my Camera automatically but would like to do by Folders.
Thanks again
You can't so it from within Camera app. You can organise your folders with Es file explorer or another before syncing.
The Dropbox Android app now has an Automatic Camera upload feature, it will up your entire camera and video roll to "Camera Uploads" folder automatically. Using this feature will earn you 3GB of free Dropbox space too! They will match every 500mb of photos/video you auto upload up to 3GB (5GB for beta testers). You can configure it in the Dropbox app settings.

I know that when you inistially set-up the dropbox app and turn on the camera uploads, it will upload all the photos on the tablet. Not sure about multiple pics after that. You may wanna clear data on the dropbox app and restart it to trigger the initial set-up again.

Thanks. I just checked DropBox and it seems it is indeed doing Multiple uploads of my Pictures.
Got odd question relating to DropBox and Camera App. My 1st initial upload of 1.5 gigs of Picture from Camera App to DropBox did indeed upload all my Pictures Automatically when I 1st turned on the Upload to Drop Box Option in the Camera. I now have another 1.4 gigs in Camera File and the Upload to Dropbox setting it on but I can only do 1 Pictures at a time it not doing them all Automatically like it did the 1st time. Any ideas how to get them all uploading without me doing 1 picture at a time?
Thanks

If you want to share certain photos that you have already taken you can do that easily from the Gallery App.
If you want to share the whole folder, long-hold on it. If you want to share certain photos, enter the folder that contains them, hit the "Menu" icon (top right) choose "Select Item" and just tap the pictures you want to share.
Once you have your images selected, click the "Share" icon (sideways V with dots at the corners) and then select Dropbox from the list. There is a chance that the Dropbox icon might be next to the Share icon if that was the last service you shared to.
Select the Dropbox folder that you want to send files to and then click the "Upload" button and all your files will be uploaded.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to get Free DropBox space and from my understanding the deal is you have to use the Camera App itself to upload to Dropbox to get 500 megs free space for each 500 meg upload up to 3 gigs. I don't have Folders in the Camera so all my Pictures are Singles and I have 723 of them. Like I said the 1st 740 pictures I did this way when I first clicked the "upload to DropBox" though Camera App the App/Dropbox did all the single files uploads automatically and you could even see it doing it Picture by Picture. I can't seem to get this to happen again with this next set of Pictures.

How do you change camera/video file folder destination?

I've searched and can't seem to fine the option to change the folder destination of pictures and videos taken from the camera/video app?
The option was available on my galaxy s2 phone so its certainly not because of pics.
Anyone knows how to change them? I would like to change the folder destinations to my external sdcard. Much safer to have them there in case of a crash.
Anyone?

One alternative solution is to install the Dropbox app and enable camera/gallery syncing. This will upload all your camera photos to Dropbox automatically. It has the added benefit of being an online backup of your photos in case you lose both your phone and SD card.

Some recently taken photos/videos are only accessible by Google Photos, appear to be in its app data and not movable

Very peculiar issue occurring: there are a fair amount of photos and videos that show up under google photos under library -> photos on device -> camera with SDCard Icon.
But the location for these files is "/external/video/media" or "/external/image/media" under ""On Device (size)." The other files taken in a similar way are correctly on "/storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera"
When clicking these files, they play normally, clicking share and More or Create Link says "Error, could not download media" and using Google Photos to Move / Copy says "Trouble Moving 1 item"
When ejecting the SDCard and physically removing it while keeping Google Photos open, all the files actually on /storage/<ID> disappear, and all these weird files remain and can be played. This is how I discovered it wasn't just today's videos, which were mysteriously not being uploaded to my nextcloud. No other app can see these videos/images, including the system's gallery app, and they are not in the internal emulated "SDcard"
These are on my SO's phone and I use the exact same model phone. I did discover that I do have some files like these but hey are all older than the oldest file on my SDCard, e.g. Google Photos has somehow decided to cache them. But on my SO's phone, these files are intermingled with the ones she's actually taken
Interestingly when I switch the google photos account to another google user logged on the phone, those files disappear. I did try moving files to the locked folder but it says "Trouble moving to Locked Folder. Try again later"— I did verify I could move files actually on the SDCard there, and they are then removed from all views except Locked Folder.
In this folder, on the top right when clicking the SDCard Icon, it does show the "SD Card folder" as "file:///storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera" as expected.
I searched for the filename in a file browser as well as in adb shell (using find / -name "filename" 2> /dev/null) and nothing comes up. As there are some lengthy videos in here, I used DiskUsage to see what might be using a lot of space, and the Google Photos app is using 7.55 GB of data, so it seems like they are being stored there. And it makes sense why they can't be found, as /data/data/com.google.android.apps.photos is only accessible by that app or the system, and I'm unrooted.
My SO said she took them the same way she normally takes photos and video, and of course when I take some they show up on the actual SDCard. I suppose in theory I could use adb backup and follow instructions on how to decrypt the data files, but really what the heck is going on?
We aren't on the latest phone or even the latest Google Photos app (could be a bug with this specific version, but then again google photos isn't taking the photos/videos, the system Camera app is). I could try upgrading her google photos but I also don't want to lose these videos of our kid. It does seem like it would back them up, but we don't have enough Google Storage to back them up online (hence why we use nextcloud), and they don't even show up under different google accounts as mentioned.

Well this didn't work, as google photos does not back up with adb, as some apps can specify this.
Some of these videos did get uploaded to google photos, but they are (now) compressed to under 1/8th their size (the original size is noted correctly in google photos), and from 4k to HD.
From what I had recalled, when they are first uploaded, they are available at their original size to be downloaded. So I tried deleting one to get it to re-upload, and now that video no longer shows up on my SDCard under "/external/video/media" so I basically lost the original HQ video of my kid, great.
Any ideas?
