Battery issues - HTC Amaze 4G

friends amaze seems to go thru batteries every few months. the first 2 were original, and recently the anker battery doesn't seem to hold a charge, either. i mean, it's bad to the point where the battery power percentage changes rapidly(all over the place), and the phone eventually shuts off.
what gives? he uses the OEM charger at home.

I think it's just something the amaze causes somehow. Don't know what it is. Have you ever taken off the back cover and smelt a really weird smell... It's the battery, atleast mine does, like its being cooked or something

Powering up the phone, when it is actually plugged in for charging, develops such type of problems.. another thing what may cause such behavior is wiping the bat stat when the the battery isn't fully charged..

Is that true? Powering up the phone when it is plugged in charging defective? I also got another question. Does wiping battery stats while plugged in fully charged cause problems too?

The battery cannot be worn out in two months (and then another one again in couple months..) consequently the problem what Cobra281 faces is due to malfunctioning (faults) of the battery controller, hence I advised on the things what may affect the battery controller operation.

Well, I power up my phone while charging all the time, My battery is over a year old and working fine.

Charging EVO 3D

Anyone know if the charging on the 3D will be like the 4G where when you take it off the charger it drops immediately? Would be nice to see if HTC fixes this to where it's something like a trickle charge.
I also wonder if the chargers (car and wall) from the orginal evo 4g will work with the evo 3d.
There will be no trickle charge because it wears down a battery faster. what they need is two charging circuits. On for charging, and one to run the phone on after the battery is charged

I agree. There has been some reports on here by people running the trickle charge kernel that have seen their battery burn up or explode. I am sure people will still develop this kernel for the 3D though.

6 reports out of thousands of people using SBC kernels. And the problem was pretty definitively traced down to cheap Chinese knock off batteries. I never saw a report, or even heard of a report, where someone using a decent battery ever had any kind of problem.

I would assume any USB charger would work. They're not even really "chargers", they're just power sources. The phone has it's own internal charging circuitry.
There will be no need for SBC kernels for the 3d. The reason they were created was to fix a charging problem that was in the n1, incredible and Evo only. HTC has fixed the bug in the most recent phone lineup. Don't worry SBC haters and lovers, it wont be needed

Charging Problems
Hey guys, pretty new to this but here's the story;
My Evo 3D has been rooted and now has the latest version of leedroid (all done by my cousin) but now I'm having issues with the Charging.
I leave the phone to charge overnight but when i wake up, the light is green but the battery is only around 70-80%, I then have to leave it to charge until 100% and then unplug.. is this a software or hardware issue? it seems it stops charging when reached 100% but then doesnt remain active.
I've had a look around the forums but can't find any fixes.. please help!
try a different kernal or flash another rom
Will Do, Thanks

Photon Battery - Sedio Extended

So I was one of those who was finding my battery life to not be sufficient on the Photon and bought the Seidio extended battery. First thought is that it does make the phone heavier, but I can deal with that. Not a deal breaker.
My issue is that the Photon doesn't recognize the fact that I now have the extended battery. I've spent the last two days using Battery calibration software (charging overnight to 100%) and then trying to discharge completely and recharge. The problem is that the phone continually is showing 1% for almost 3-4 hours if not longer. I can't get it to recognize that there is more juice in there.
While it's great that it seems to be working well (first real work day with it today), having the battery drain like mad (or seemingly) and then sitting at 1% for half or more of the day and not knowing when it will die is a problem.
I wonder if this is why the stock seemed to drain so quickly - maybe it's a programming bug? Firmware bug? I dunno. In any event, any suggestions on how to make the phone actually see that there's more juice would be great.
As an FYI I've used "Battery Calibrator" - both of them and Battery Drainer and Fast Discharge to get the phone down. I am rooted, but everything is stock other then the root itself.
I spoke with Sedio - they said I should unroot the phone and do a master reset. I can't believe that would make it work better - but I'd rather ask this community first.
Thanks!
Check in the accessory forum there is a couple things on the Seidio battery and some people there that have them may have run into the same issue and have a fix for it.
Can't seem to find a thread where people talk about aa problem with it. Can you point me in the right direction?

have this battery, after the initial eight cycles allow nearly complete discharge, allow to charge for at least two hours after phone indicates battery is fully charged..... my battery is working very well, just use a battery indicator from the market, I didnt piss around with any battery calibrators, think this might be your problem, have never used a calibrator on any of my phones with extended batteries. Android market probly has an app to wipe your ass.....do you really need it? Hope the analogy is clear to you.
LOL fair enough. I did do the full flash this morning - so I'm unrooted.. Hasn't seemed to help - drain looks the same.. Been through about 6 full cycles since I got the battery. What battery indicator program are you using? I have battery circle and it's got the same issue.
Again - battery lasts just fine - but the amount of power left is never accurately indicated to me - and that's the problem.
I have had many Seidio Batteries, dating back to the OG EVO. The problem I have with this particular battery is this: These batteries work "properly" when charged on an Independent Charger, NOT inside the phone. If you Cycle/Discharge/Charge with this Battery on an External Charger, the Battery should calibrate correctly. I still believe the issue with charging within the phone, is that the Mopho doesnt accurately measure the Battery Capacity. Try and External Charger, should solve your problems....
riggy
Riggy -
Battery def is charging fully as I get tons of life - the MoPho only shows 1% left though for hours on end.. It's a matter of it doesn't see the correct amount of juice left. As per cutter2668, it may just be a situation of discharge - charge. Dunno.
As an FYI I did the full flash this morning, and I haven't really seen a difference in the phone telling me how much batt life I had left. I'll give it another day and hopefully after a period of time it will start reflecting a true number.
I have also emailed Seidio support directly on the issue.
So as an update, seidio is going to be sending along a new battery to see if that solves the issue. I guess we will see!

Any luck on the new battery? Just noticed my extended battery is doing the same thing. :-(
So things still aren't working right. Battery shows 1 percent for half my day and the Photon just doesn't know. However, I read a thread on Amazon about a generic extended battery and someone suggested using Battery Monitor and using Voltage Based monitoring. Its certainly not perfect but it gives you a somewhat accurate reads on remaining battery. I truely wonder if this is OS or a hardware limitation.
Oh well.

Maybe this is an Android issue, I've read the LG Optimus S has the same problem with extended batteries.

[Q] Is there realy not ONE 100% working ROM for the Evo3D?

Isn't that a little bit sad?
Since the support for this phone is realy crap.
I have the issue where the bat does not charge to 100%.
I have to remove the cable when it hits the green LED (99% full) and reconnect it again (LED turns red) to get to 100% finally.
When I contact HTC they tell me to send it for repair.
Buit this is obviously a software issue, not a hardfware issue.
An update would fix it easily.
My GF has same issue, and I swapped tyhe phone at the store in the first week because of this. New phjone exactly same problem.

Normal behavior. And if this is the only issue you are having (not really an issue) you are doing pretty well. The phone has a built in overcharge protection (as all phones do) that will charge the phone to 100% or just under then let it discharge to 90-95% and then charge again to 100%. There are SBC kernels for other phones that will change this effect by charging to 100% and then trickle charge it to keep it at 100%, but none made for the EVO3D because it really doesn't seem like a huge deal. And if you are really sending phones back over 1%, you are one picky dude.
I think your thread title is wrong. There are some great fully functional ROMs out there.
The battery will fluctuate from 95%-100% while on the charger. Think it's an HTC issue, or maybe Android. This isn't something to get all pissed off about IMO, maybe I am missing something though.
yep.. is 100% normal.
i'm running on a shawn3d 1.4 rom, with a akernel v10.07, have a battery life of over 2 days, with bluetooth and wifi on, medium use..
everything but I mean everything works..
so euhm... whats the problem again???
OP,
Why you butt hurt?
Just kidding. These issues are all normal for android phones. I have seen these issues on the Heroc, OG Evo, Samsung Epic and now Evo 3D.
It is not that I am picky.
You must agree that it is quite anoying if you sleep for 8 hours while charging, and you then see a green LED, but then to see 99%.
When you for instance have the alarmclock ringning, you drain 2 or 3%.
It is not normal behaviour I think. PLus bat-life was 2 days in the first 2 weeks, now I barely last a day.
Any thoughts?
Edit...: 3 HTC phones before NO problem at all

There is no such type of issue on my evo 3d. I've tried around 15 different ROMs and all were functioning as they should.
The issue you have posted is not an issue. If you see green LED and numbers below 100% then your phone went to 100% before but you havent noticed that. I advise you to keep your eyes on the battery icon when the LED is red and % are near 98-99. You will notice it goes to 100% and red LED turns green. Then the numbers will go down as your battery discharges.
It is an overcharge protection made by the manufacturer.

You want your battery percentage to stay at 100 when you charge it? Get rid of your 3d, get an evo 4g, put a froyo ROM on it and use a sbc kernel. Other than that, quit *****ing. Like others have said its a built in over charge protection from HTC. Some may argue if its actually needed because i used an sbc kernel on my old evo ever since it was available and never had a problem with my battery. But is like 3-4% really that big of a deal?
Saying that there are no fully functioning roms is a bit rude imo, there are tons. I use warm 2.3 and it has zero problems.

It's not a issue, it's supposed to be that way. It has a "maintain" function once it reaches 100, it will let itself drain back to 95, the charge back to 100, then back down, etc.. It's to maintain the battery correctly .
Dumbass with a smartphone.
It's not an issue you idiot. It's so your battery doesn't die for good after a short amount if time. They're not supposed to be fully charged like that. Educate yourself instead of looking like a fool.
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D using XDA Premium App
If a lithium battery were brought to 100% and the charger kept charging it to keep it at 100%, you would have far worse issues than a 5% fluctuation, you would likely have a house that has burned down. Lithium batteries are very picky about their voltage, too much and they go into a runaway exothermic condition and become fireballs, too little and they go into a runaway exothermic condition and become fireballs.
Check out youtube videos about damaged or overcharged lithium batteries.
Honestly, this is a problem with all Android phones, I've gone from the EVO 4g to the E3D and I've had the same issue, though I wouldn't exactly call it a "problem"...
What I do when I wake is unplug my phone, check my email/social networks on it for a few minutes, let the battery drain a few % points, then plug it back up while I shower. It sounds weird, but unplugging and re-plugging really helps, as my battery then stays at 100/99% for at least an hour after I leave my house before beginning to drain.
I've noticed that if I don't do this, the battery drains a lot faster than it would if I had...
Hope this helps
yea it is eternity 130

I have a similar problem. My phone randomly turns off/restarts. Afterwards, my battery icon turns gray for a few minutes. When it comes back, it drops by ~10-20%.
This actually happened to me before several months back. Last time, I called HTC and they gave me a new battery. That worked for a couple of months, but now it's back. I'm currently working with HTC tech support to get it figured out.

I was, but I recently installed Energy rom. The problem is still there. I'm running my phone in safe mode now and seeing if my phone restarts.
Quite a few people have problems with stock batteries. I encounter the same problems regardless what ROM I'm running. I bought a couple Anker 1900 mAh batteries and will report back.
You need a new battery, but you can try draining the battery all the way down to the point that the device can't even come on, then it charge it over night all the way back up. See if that helps, it tends to help with this battery issue.
Ido I have the same prob but I was thinking how about resetting battery stats in recovery
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
I am so relived to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem. Let me tell you guys my experience with up to 3 batteries, various roms, and weeks of googling...
So basically, changing battery do fix the problem; but only temporarily. It can fix the problem for about a couple weeks or months, but the problem will come back anyway. I am on my third battery now and switching between the batteries; so, I am pretty sure that it is only a temporary fix. Cycling between the three battery sometimes is pretty helpful (but again, it is just a temporary fix).
Another way to fix it temporarily that works pretty well for me is to take out the battery, wait for about 5 seconds, and turn on the phone again. It only fix the problem for about a couple days though; so, might as well switch battery if you got another battery.
Another possibility to fix it without playing with the battery, you can try factory reset or install another custom rom. It sometimes helps also, but a pain if you are not the type that likes to try different roms.
Lastly, the better and simpler fix is to reboot to recovery, wipe all caches and dalvik, fix permissions, and reboot again. This can fix the problem (but only temporary).
Out of those four tries, I find that swapping battery or full wipe / install
Custom rom tends to fix the problem for a longer time. I haven't been able to find any permanent fox for the random shutdown yet. But, I hope those information helps for anyone who have the same problem

The draining battery does work. Just turn EVERYTHING on to drain it (brightness, GPS, bluetooth etc.) and watch some videos to drain it down all the way. After this do a mini power cycle (pull battery wait awhile, put it back, then leave it charging for at least 10 hours).
This solved the problem for me

Exactly, worked for me and quite a few others, I've tested it myself when I had bought my second device used, it came with this very issue, I killed what was left of it and let it charge over night, it's been remarkable ever since, but different folks different strokes, the next best thing to do is to change the battery since that solved it for others. And for the record, the oem battery is the best to replace it with since some anker batteries have only made it worse for some.
getting my newly acquired Amaze device in a couple of days and will see if i run into this issue... god hope not lol... if battery issue does occur - will follow thru the full batt drain solution (mentioned above).

I'm having this issue as well. My phone would randomly just shut off on me while using it at say, 75%, then turn off. When I boot it back on, it drops to around 50% or so.
Does the battery drain fix truely work? My girlfriends phone does the same (its an acer though).

I have my stock battery and 2 Ankers. The phone will randomly die with any of the batteries. The battery drain trick seems to work okay, but it certainly isn't a "fix" IMO.
I drained my stock battery last weekend and charged it to 100% on the Anker charger. Worked great down to 10% on Sunday. Charged the phone to 100% on the nightstand, while I slept Sunday night. Phone randomly shutoff at ~25% at work on Monday. Had similar results with the two Anker batteries too.

Battery Problems

Ok so phone doesn't charge as fast as usual and while charging and using it loses battery percentage and never has before. Also when I get a full charge then unplug it goes straight down to 12%. What do you guys think.... Battery or port problems?

The only way to know that answer is to rule out possibilities. Try different batteries and chargers.

It's the stock I777 battery I assume?
clear battery cache and try.
if it false please replace it with genuine battery.Unless it will restart during the charging

I just bought another battery. I found it was the battery more than port problems or anything like that. My friend and I have the same phones, same roms. We tested this by first going through 3 power cycles. After we charged it, we had only the same apps working, except for some minor checking of FB and twitter (I don't use twitter, but he does).
After our 4th power cycle, it seemed like his phone was dying faster w/ my battery in it. His battery in my phone lasted about 5-10 hours more, I did my normal daily activities on it, even played some youtube videos in class.
So I bought a new one, and bam, stays alive more than 12 hours

I also had the same issue in my i777. i changed OEM batteries and doesn't work. for me it was the PORT.
i ordered 1 from ebay and replaced. now its work fine.
please change the port. it will work perfectly
work around
i am using super nexus rom battery life is great compared to stock.
try tablet charger if you have. it will charger your phone faster. i am using my nexus 10 charger its definitely taking less time to charge.

Common sense post of the day:
You have to be really careful getting phone accessories off e-bay. In the past I've been duped into buying a fake SD card and a wonky battery.
