I am running ICS in a Thunderbolt with radios 2.02.00.1117r (CDAM) & 0.02.02.1211r (LTE) and Build number 7.02.605.06 710RD (debloated rooted ICS official ROM). I noticed that the Wifi Tether is working extremely slow (Download:1.5mbps) however when doing a speedtest from the phone it is very fast (Download: 20mbps-26mbps)
I tried several combination of other ROMS and different radios (all of them) and Wifi Tether is behaving the same way.
Anyone having the same problem? If so, how did you solve it?
Wifi Tether is running with the following settings:
Device-Profiel: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Wifi driver reload: Checked
MSS Clamping: Checked
Routing Fix: Checked
Disable Wake-Lock: checked
Any help will be appreciated.
Disable mss clamping and change the device profile to rezound. Those are the settings I use and it never goes that slow. Speed tests also aren't very reliable sources of information. They will give you different results every time.

Thank you very much for your response. I applied the changes and it still is working very slow. I get 20mbps on my phone and under the same conditions i get et 2mbps on my tablet. BTW tablet is fine.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Stop doing a speed test. The results are probably false. Unless you have the WiFi power consumption setup to use less power on your tablet.

Thanks. However when i do my speedtest in a wifi fios service i get consistent speeds of 88 mbps to the same server on the same tablet under the same conditions.
Stopping speedtest is NOT a valid response.
Any more suggestions from anyone else?

So you're saying that when you speed test the tablet using fios powered wifi you get 88mbps and you expect the phone to tether at exactly the same speed. The reason I'm telling you to stop speed testing from your tablet when connected to the phone tether is because the speed test can't tell just how fast the speed between the phone and tether is. You'll never get a consistent result because of that. Also, the tether isn't going to come even close to what you can get at fios and I can see why it seems so slow compared to that. I tether my phone to my tablet everyday and I always get equal download speeds using real tests such as downloading a large file. Not by speed testing the connection.

I think you did not understand my posting. I test speeds IN THE PHONE and they are about 18mbps, however when tethering and web browsing, the tablet is very slow. Speedtest in the tablet is less than 1mbps. Difficult to watch netflix on my tablet with that connection.

I know your speed test ON THE PHONE is up to 20. WHAT I'M TELLING YOU IS THAT THE SPEED YOUR TABLET TESTS AT AFTER TETHERING TO YOUR PHONE MAY NOT REPORT TO SPEEDTEST CORRECTLY. Did you gather what I'm trying to tell you now?

Example: When I use WiFi with my ps3 and test the connection I get 12 down and 1.5 up everytime. Once I tether even over 4g it shows 1.5 down and doesn't show anything for up usually. It get on average 30-35 down with 4g in my area and 18up on a good day. I will test this tonight with my tablet and screen shot the results for you so you can see that speedtest isn't accurate on the secondary connection.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I've seen the same and can confirm the speeds should be equal. Tethering should pass thru whatever speed it's getting regardless of what you're sharing your bandwith with.
Have you tried testing from any other devices?

Hi
My connection using both SGS2 Hotspot and usb tethering seems very shakey and I suspect that it falls out of connection in spikes now and then.
I have run a couple of speed tests which give varying results. But is there a software or somewhere online I can run a prolonged constant test of my connection to determine if it drops and loses connection?
Thanks for any advice.
Hm... I tried that and mine is running on 6,3 - 6,7 MB/s via data connection (usb tether)... Didn't try WiFi tho....
So it's not really worth to talk about my results...

I don't know if its just me but, my phone seems slow while on my home wifi. I haven't checked wifi anywhere else. And my signal on the phone seems to be weak at times even while sitting in the same room with my router. My cappy seems faster in this area. Also streaming some video seems to be slower on my sgs2 vs my cappy at times. Any tips/advice...?
BTW..my device is vanilla as of yet...

Well, at present, I'm on Cognition. So, I can't give an exact parallel as far as circumstances and setups; however, my phone is extremely fast when running on my wifi connection at home. I haven't really focused much on the reception, but from what I remember it has been excellent as well. If I'm in the same room, it's completely full. If I'm elsewhere in the house I still tend to have decent reception(more than just the one bar).
I'm not sure what to suggest for better performance outside of possibly considering flashing an alternative ROM instead of just running it stock. The process, overall, is honestly quite simple. I do understand though that some people like to run the phone the way that it came out of the box. It's just a suggestion.
Outside of that I mean maybe an issue between your router and your phone, but honestly I doubt that.
I appreciate the response. I'm puzzled by this...as I am no expert I'm also not new to flashing roms. My cappy is on a modded rom. I'm just giving the devs time to work out the bugs! Thanx again!

The BCM4330 used in a LOT of mobile devices just plain doesn't seem to like some routers.
At my home, the signal strength always looks low before connecting on my GS2, Tab 10.1, and Infuse (All BCM4330) - then it suddenly looks better when I connect.

Hates D-Link (battery drain, loss of range).
Loves Netgear (less battery drain than HSPA, excellent range).
At least that's the case with the international version.
Have a NetGear and my wifi flies. of the couple dozen or so routers I have set up for family and friends NetGear seem to always be the easiest to set up, connect the most consistently, and give the best all around speeds for both net surfing and console gaming.

My phone was downloading normal speeds earlier. Then I rooted in and flashed Cognition X2 beta 4.
Now my speeds are REALLY slow. (takes forever to download something as small as 4 Mb...)
Idk if anyone else is having the same issue
check your router for firmware updates, if there are, appy them and then retest if your speeds are still slow
Interesting..as I am using a d-link gaming router. Will have to check into firmware update..had the router a few years never updated it.

ive had a number of friends that get new phones and have complaints like:
whats wrong with my phone it wont connect to my router, or get sporadic connections, drop for no reason, slow x-fers...
first thing i do is update the firmware, you'd be suprised at how many issues can get 'fixed' when your router gets updated.
so, i'd start there first..
Yea, I'm going to give that a try..thanks for the heads up..!

Turned on GPS..
If I stand at the furthest point in my house and do a speed test with GPS disabled I get
34ping 2.30Mb/s down 3.82Mb/s up
I enable GPS and do another speed test..
11ping 17Mb/s down 4.44Mb/s up
Although this has, for me, fixed my Wifi my GPS is non existent, I am yet to get a single satellite with GPS test while in the middle of my garden.
Let me know if enabling the GPS helps with Wifi speeds for any of you
Maybe this is why my WiFi seems OK. I just leave GPS on most of the time. (although I haven't tested my GPS as it is wintry here)
interesting, i will have to give this a try.....thanks for the info sir.
Was really hoping it would work for me since my wifi gets below 5mbps which sucks...
Did multiple test and nothing major changed..
Glad it worked for you..

You're sure enabling GPS didn't simply make speed test select a more appropriate server?
It would be better if folks tested wifi speeds over their local network, I think.

Interesting. Is this with the latest firmware? Play with Wifi Analyzer as well. Check your Wifi -db signal. See what is going on with that.
Odd that just enabling GPS and not enabling would get different results. Maybe something with the latest firmware.
I can't test because my prime is totally modded. External antenna etc.

My GPS works (marginally) . Works better with the GPS fix mentioned in other threads. However, getting a GPS fix from a "cold start" sometimes takes a while. For example, Decided to try it on a short grocery trip. When I finally got the fix (already at the store), it said "2050 sec to first fix"....Once it got that first fix, it worked fine the rest of the way home.....Again with that fix applied....although I marginally see sats without the fix.
Another side note: I happened to notice while it was searching, a little info message appeared that said "Best results are obtained if the unit is horizontal".
But sometimes that first fix can be a bear to get.
Good luck,
Bob

Other than the check boxes in LOCATION Services, there is no other control. When you open an app that can use GPS, you'll see a little icon in the notification bar that says "Searching for GPS"
If the GPS system were totally working, you would never lose the signal...The only time you lose it is if it is marginal.
What is the impact of GPS on battery life, if it does not work and it keeps searching without finding anything?
Battery will be drained very very quickly. I am sure.
Think about it

The GPS will only find your location if an app asks it to do so. So if the GPS icon isn't showing next to the clock the GPS is not in use.
Not sure any of you have noticed... Prime doesn't have a gps.conf file on it... I added it last night and got 8 of 13 locked... from inside... by the window. Check out system/etc/gps.......
One other thing I noticed.. in build.prop my wifi.country = is set to GB even though I bought the transformer in Canada... can someone check and see if they have anything different?
I've always wondered if the Wifi issue was a software problem. My wifi is "okay". The most annoying thing is it randomly completely disconnects from my school's wifi network and then it shows that there is no wifi available. The reason why I think its a software problem is because if I disable and re-enable the wifi it starts working again with me being in the exact same location.
Kind of odd...

I saw this on previous firmwares, but never on the latest one. It also seemed, in my experience, to be related to the chrome beta. If I brought that up it would immediately stop any data being transferred over wifi and would then lead to a disconnect.
I never did uninstall the chrome beta to see if that fixed it entirely, but updating to the latest firmware did seem to stop the issue.
Suppose I'll hop on the bandwagon and give it a go.
It's hard for me to get any real speed degradation without actually dropping below the connection threshold with these rural speeds, but I'll try.
My wifi works pretty good after some build.prop tweaks, i would suggest that before modding the tf201. Basically, i added net.tcp.buffersize.wifi with some values and net.tcp.buffersize.umts with the same values 4096 ,87380, 256960, 4096, 16384, 256960
Of course you need to be rooted

Ok so first off my internet connection is perfect, and it isn't my internet because my internet works fine, now to my issue....
My WiFi on my amaze turns off by itself every 5 minutes, but not only that it throttles and I can't get a stable connection to my internet, I tried loading google and it took me 5 minutes because my WiFi was disconnecing and not working even though I have full signal
It's not my Rom, or any Rom (it happens with my Rom, Mikes rom, and NRG's Rom)
It could be a hardware issue but I doubt it because my data connection is fine, although my connection has been weaker ever since this has started happening, any advice? Could be a radio issue but I havnt flashed a radio since the first leak so I dunno

Does your security use WPA? I know that for some routers, the WPA handshake interval (also known as Key Renewal Interval) can be set too low. This is not something you can change with your phone, but with your router. I find that anything below 3600 *CAN* cause problems. Try changing it to 3600 and see if it improves.
Stupid question: Do you have the "Best Wi-Fi Performance" option selected? I find it that it helps sometimes.
No its not my router, my iPod touch 1rst gen loads pages fine, aswell as my old mytouch 4g

I have WiFi issues as well...I always reset the router everyday just to deal with it. The only time it works better is with stock. ICS or GB I don't have issues...only Roms.

My real world experience with it seems good .. but speedtest.net app shows only 5mb/s when is usually close to 15mb/s on hi.gingerbread (i pay for 15gb speed, so it made sense).
It never times out or has a hard time connecting tho
I'm running stock rooted .3 ics... Interesting find. I will keep an eye on it myself
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2
Tried resetting your wifi router? That could be the issue, since I use both wifi/3G on the leak and official updates, both are fluent, hence the idea of a hardware issue possibly, but you can try reflashing the latest radio file. And I don't think wifi should affect network data, sounds like a hardware issue with that for sure.

I know, but it seems that the Amaze can be a bit sensitive. It wouldn't hurt to check the interval. If it's at 3600, great. If not, change it to 3600 and see if it improves.
It doesn't have to do with our routers. At least not mine. On GB, never experienced this issue. Same phone but now with stock .3 ICS I have trouble with connection and speed over wifi. Same at work. It must have something to do with the new ICS radio because I've experience the same issue on ARHD 2.2.1.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
Then reflash the radio, see if it helps, my reception actually increased with the update, from 5-8mbps to 12-25mbps.
I should also mention that my wife's GS2 doesn't have WiFi issues. Stock GB...she won't let me do anything to her Sammy.

Done that. Flashed first leaked ICS - wifi issues. Flashed ARHD 2.2.1 - wifi issues. Flashed latest leaked/official ICS - wifi issues.
On the network, I get great signal and 23mbps in Beverly Hills. Wifi is just slow and weak. Pay for 10mbps download but phone does half of that.

I have this exact issue, WIFI sucks and either drops or comes to a crawl on this phone. My G2 as well is super fast. Considering a hard reset but not sure if that will solve it or not. Such a hassle when I'm at home trying to use this phone on wifi.
I had good results turning off Enhanced LTE in Mobile Data setting on my AT&T device. Fixed an Exchange Sync issue, fixed browser response (except Chrome, which for some reason was never slow), and fixed some battery consumption concerns. Fixed Play Store download times, too.
Hopefully I'll turn that option back on someday to find that AT&T has fixed it.
