I'm not asking which people like best, because I know that is highly subjective. What I want to know are which ROMs have all original S-Pen functions intact and if they have Samsung's apps too, that a bonus. I want a ROM that has more settings in the notification pull down and more theme options, but I don't want to give up the S-Pen functions that were one of the big reasons I got a Note. Any ideas?
did you know you can get gmt spen control from the market and use it with any rom? Then get an app like papyrus or memo, and you can set up custom gestures, or the original gestures if you like.
It works extremely well, and let's you try out cm based roms while still getting to use your s pen

You, my friend, are my hero for the day! I absolutely did not know that. I've only had the phone like 2 days and have only been back on Android like 2 days. I was on Windows Phone for the past two years after about as long on Android and really got out of touch with Android during that time.
Also, what is the name of the app that gives you S-Pen control? I got a lot of results but quite a few of them seemed fairly shady.

Almost any rom that is based on the recent 4.1.2 release will be able to run the S-Note app.
Try padawan jb 4.1.2

Anyone know why the spen gestures are now different on this new jb release? It was so much easier before with the simple Swype of the pen. Also no home gesture now.. ?

I'm not sure why, but something tells me our phone is meant to be used in landscape mode. I want to give it a try, but not sure what the best way to go about it is. I am rooted and currently running HYFR OnlyOne rom. Great rom and I love the S3 add ons. But I have seen the hybrid rom has a tablet mode which looks like it would make landscape use much easier. But does it maintain the goodies like S-Memo and the use of the S-pen? Would it be a good idea just to use another launcher, like Go or maybe VTL, as it seems pretty landscape oriented?
I would prefer to be able to do it and maintain all the usability of the phone. Any suggestions?
The most basic way to add landscape functionality is with a new launcher. I use apex which allows me to landscape it and allows for additional icons on home screen, dock etc through its options menu. As far as I'm aware hybrid offers tablet support with s pen functionality. The only ones who don't are the aokp and cm9 ROMS. If you want full tablet & s pen support then hybrid is the way to go

I am currently using The Hybrid RCVI and you still retain everything, everything, everything. The only difference is you flash an additional zip which contains the 4.0 ics apps (gmail, calendar, phone, messaging etc) because the stock touchwiz ones don't work with such a low dpi. But you should try it, it's so amazing. All s-pen functionality still works (double tap for s memo, screenshot, back, menu, home) and s note. Can't go wrong.
Oh my GOSH, i just remembered, hahahaha, you can lock your phone on landscape mode. turn on auto rotation, then turn it to the side so it flips, without rotating turn off the auto rotation and it stays in landscape DD so now you can keep everything you want or your current setup if you like it and just do that. hope it helps.
I actually just started using the phone in landscape only. I use Apex Launcher and lock the launcher in landscape mode. I then use an app called Ultimate Rotation Control which allows for per app orientation control. This allows me to keep the phone locked in landscape while having apps like Phone flip to portrait when I need to dial. I'm however using CM9 in tablet mode because I like the AOSP feel and in my opinion, AOSP tablet mode looks much nicer than TouchWiz tablet mode. You can still use the S-pen as a standard stylus with CM9 but it loses the rest of its functionality. I don't use S-pen features all that much anyway so it's not a huge loss. If you decide to use an AOSP-based rom, there is a port of the basic S memo features that was just posted in the Themes and Apps section which is cool for basic notes/drawing. Like previously stated though, you can use Hybrid to keep the S-pen and TouchWiz things.

I think I will give Hybrid and maybe CM9 a try. Is there more then one CM9 rom?
Also does anyone know if boot manager works with the note? I used to use it on my evo, but a google search didn't return many results for if it works with the note.
Is there a good guide for installing hybrid? The OP seems kind of vague. I don't even see where it mentions having to flash the additional apps. And the part about installing apps to the SD card seems ominous. Any help? Maybe I just missed it. It's late and I am tired, lol

I miss the functions of my s-pen while using aosp ROMs.
Does any one have any apps that would create a hover icon
or any thing that can replicate the touchwiz functions?
Thanks for all your help.

You will lose S Pen and other Touchwiz functionality if you flash this but here is how you can get some of that functionality back!

You should also check out GMD Spen Control in the Play store, it adds some of the features back and gives you more than were on TW.

I'm specially interested in the hover icon for the s-pen.
Is it a function that only touchwiz-based roms can get? I know that we lose all the support for the s-pen on AOSP, but I was wondering if the hovering is more a hardware thing - thus, possible.
Thanks!
I can't comment on 4.2.2, but I'm running cyanogenmod 4.3 and I can turn on hover. Settings - Language & input - Show icon when using stylus.
first I was using the CM S-Pen Root from Playstore (free). Very limited features ( detection, keyboard change)
but I have moved to this one: Cost is $5.25 but worth it for all the features of S-Pen on AOSP Roms.

I understand why people want to flash stock JB custom ROMS (me always having been one of them, for 3 phones now), but in the case of the GS4, why?
You would lose actual useful Samsung features like Multi Window (works ridiculously well), WatchON (to utilize the IR blaster), the mostly better Samsung camera app, S Health (some ppl use), and even some of the smart features like gestures, S Voice, and the eye tracking stuff.
Don't most people want at least some of these? I would never want to lose Multi Window (first time having this, especially when using Samsung Multi Window Manager to use any apps with it), WatchON, and the camera app, even having been a stock custom ROM freak for a long time with other phones.
This is the first time I feel that rooting, deodexing, debloating, and a few theme mods are enough to satisfy me (for now) mainly because I want these factory apps and features.
Anyone else?

I have absolutely no use for any of the features you listed. Camera quality on AOSP will get there eventually.......and I don't use multi window.....and the other stuff is just bloat....
Just my opinion....
Your going to have people on both sides of this. Some want an AOSP like experience and consider all of these Samsung apps to be "Bloat".
IMO, I'd like to see a AOSP look and feel ROM, with some of the Samsung features in it. I'm sure someone will make something like that.

I agree, but honestly with some theming, Nova launcher, and a few app replacements, the phone on Touchwiz isn't much different whatsoever. I mean what, just the settings menus and some of the system apps? No big deal.
I don't get why anyone wouldn't want true multitasking like Multi Window provides (among the other things)...
Better lockscreen
Theme engine
More internal memory
More customization (although xposed is making that less of a difference)
Sometimes things like better Bluetooth stacks

Unfortunately no matter how small the ROM is you won't get any of that space back.
Then if there was a de-Touchwized ROM, I'd take that lol. I want to keep these things but yes I too hate the small differences in Touchwiz that aren't easily changeable without custom ROMing.
Also, I actually like the Touchwiz lock screen a lot, that sunlight effect is sick and something to show off the screen with, and you can still use the widgets just like in AOSP.

How is the multi-window different from just holding down Home to access recent apps? I know it puts a side slide-out bar on top of everything. Just curious.

I came to this phone from the galaxy nexus. I wanted something different from stock Android. Don't get me wrong I love stock Android just wanted something different. I don't use all the s app and all the air view and motion stuff. But there are some I like and use and from what I can tell there is a Rom that leaves all the features on it.

Themer intrigues me. But..... what is it?
On the Themer web site if you go to "About", you don't get an explanation of what Themer is, but you get the bios of the team.
Is Themer a launcher? I have a Note 4 that I just got a month or so ago and was wondering what I might LOSE by installing Themer. Does all my TouchWiz stuff still work? (s-pen stuff, air gestures, things like that). Really basic question I know, but I expected to find this info prominently explained on the web site and.... if it's there, I apologize if I missed it. (I'll play the AGE card at that point )

Hi CJ, don't worry it's not a dumb question...
Themer is a launcher, in the same way TouchWiz is a launcher. Therefore, using Themer restricts access to S-Pen, Air Gestures etc.
However, Touchwiz isn't nearly as powerful for customization when compared to Themer. Every launcher comes with its pros and cons. So if you're looking for a launcher to easily customize your phone, use Themer, especially if you're not a heavy user of Samsung's features.

Hi Marco, I don't have a Note 4 but Themer does not restrict any of the proprietary Touchwiz functionality such as the S pen on my Note 3 and Note 2. It only restricts you from using TW homescreen widgets.

Yes those gestures are mostly for functions in TW apps like their Internet browser or gallery. They only do a few editing tricks within the TW launcher itself.

Just installed this app yesterday, works great. You can customize swipes on your screen to do different things. I've attached a screenshot of all the current possible actions.
I'm still using stock gestures, but have added a few additional swipes.

I disagree...I never heard of this before.
I really like this app. Just found it yesterday. Wanted to turn off my screen with a swipe or app(now I do with a swipe). It works perfect. This should be BUILT IN to SETTINGS\Advanced\Motions and gestures! However, it is readily available on Play and Galaxy stores, sooo, NP.
Have hidden the bottom native nav buttons. They still work, but are hard to reach one handed. Don't have to reach down for back/recent/home anymore.
Can go directly to app drawer from another program. Very usefull. A plethora of actions.
This app works well if you want to use gestures with a 3rd party launcher but do not like the stock OneUI gestures. I had the stock gestures enabled but only used swipe up for home and then used OHO+ for the back and task switcher, not as good as proper android 10 gestures but works pretty well.
Finally I can use Android 10 gestures-like with Nova! Thanks!

I am absolutely loving this app. I came back to Android after 1.5years of iOS and I am not disappointed with the level of customization we can do, and Samsung has definitely up its game as far as the software goes.
