Read books from Network (NAS) folder - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have search over the net and xda forums, with no success. Maybe someone can help me with this.
Long story short:
While at home, I want to be able to read book from a network drive (I have all my book stored on a NAS). And I don't want to download any book on my tablet (as I will only read at home). How can I achieve that?
Thanks.

First, this is depending on the type of Network-Protokol your NAS provides.I guess that is SMB Protocol (Can a Windows PC connect to this NAS, then it is surly SMB)
The smartes way would be, your kernel would include an CIFS module, in this case you could use CifsManager (Use IP-Address to specify your NAS instead of network-name!)
If thats not possible, there are some Apps which can 'stream' a file form a NAS server w/o copiing it to your device: ES Datei Explorer
Regards Uwe

The idea of using CIFS Manager seems the right one, but the problem I have is that my kernel does not seem to have the modules installed.
So, the question is either how to install this modules or if there is a workaround.
I am interested mainly for my Galaxy Tab (P7510), but also for a Stock Huawei P1 (both rooted).

Importing Certificates

I need to import a certificate for my WIFI. I can get this as a PEM or DER format certificate from our admins, which I can use on anything else from a laptop to a pda.
On the Nexus the certificate needs to be .p12 files (PKCS#12). I do not have one of these, nor can I get one, nor can I find a way to convert the current PEM/DER to one of these.
How do I do this? It seem pointless if the nexus requires a different format than that provided to people to work with all other devices. Admins are not going to start issuing a special format, just for nexus users, Especially when that format seems to need a private key in addition and/or another password too.
Anyone else managed to do this?
I installed a certificate (a .crt file) by opening it with the web browser (via HTTP). You could also try opening it in Astro or another file manager.
A lot of people have complained about this. Apparently you have to import it from the web browser. File and gmail apps don't seem to know how to handle the certs.
You can forward it to your gmail account then use the web browser to get to gmail and import it from there.
Hi Guys,
I don't mean to hijack the thread, I've been trying to find the full encryption standards and protocols supported by the nexus one and have not had much luck. I presume you guys might have an idea.
Anyone got a link ? Thanks for your help. Ash.

I've tried opening with a few file browsers, no luck as they refuse to open them, tried various ways of opening with web browsers, no luck as all they want to do is save them, and then the file browsers dont want to open. Also tried email and opening through the web or client. No luck.
Can you guys break it down how you got it to work ?
Thanks
Ash.
Anyone know how to load a .crt and .ca certificates on the nexus one ?
I've tried doing everyway with and without the certificates.
Thanks
Ash.
Just tried uploading a .DER cert to my personal FTP and goto it via the browser and it simply opened it like a text file. .P12 files are recognised by the browser fine and the user is prompted for the passkey but that is expected as .P12 seem to be the only type of cert that works on Android.
You could try to manually modify wpa_supplicant.conf . Depending on the network configuration this may vary. This is the same way you would do it in Linux. I remember I did this in my G1 ( I dunno if you need root, my G1 was rooted anyway), but the location of the file was not in /etc like it is usually in most Linux. My conf looked like this:
network={
ssid="somenetworkWPA"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
pairwise=CCMP
eap=PEAP
identity="[email protected]"
password="pass"
phase2="autheap=MSCHAPV2"
ca_cert="/sdcard/mycert.der"
}
There are plenty of samples and explanations around the net about changing this file. Hope this helps.

It's /data/misc/wifi/wpa-supplicant.conf. It's owned by wifi:wifi with permissions 770. So it appears you'll need to be root.

[Q] Howto access Win7 Shares from Gen8 Archos?

Hi,
i know most of u guys are "nerds" (like me?!?!) and use linux - but sadly im still on win7 with my main shares
Anyway i did a lot of research now on google and several forums about how 2 access the win7 shares from our archos (mainly from the video and music app)!
Bit I didn't found a damn way without looseing my whole securtity settings -> most solutions are going to disable whole security and allow guest access,...
(Well actualy i got the problem of all others: u type in login + pw and press ok - and u get asked again and again for it)
Anyway some ppl use cifs as far as i read but I even dont get what cifs exactly does (somehow mounting network folders as far as I read - but it seemed to be steady - and does it work from music and video app?)
So any help appreciated
regards
FrEcP

The problem with W7 is that it introduced some new features and encrypts in a different way.
All other windows versions where patched so that they can work.
But as it is a close source thing of MS it takes some time until it gets into samba or ther tools.
Did you read http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=45908
and tried http://www.jankamp.com/2010/11/windows-share-manager/ ?
y found those links about deinstalling win live - and using share manager - sry i didnt wrote that.
But share manager rly disables all security as far as i understood - anyway it also didnt work for me somehow.
So seems using an external explorer or perhaps cifs - dunno if that work and how - seems to be the only options
u got a good source on howto use cifs with UD if that works? As far as i understood its "mounted" in a local folder and the n accessible!?!?
EDIT:
searching on my own i think - dont want begging u with things i can find on google
anyway update for http://code.google.com/p/urukdroid/wiki/UrukServices is needed
So you are using Uruk?
And you started the cifs server via UrukConfig?
It is up to UD 1.5RC1 normally off after the start.
yes this is what i did so far - but i didnt edit the config file yet

[Q] Using Wifi file explorer pro - HELP!

I've just downloaded the Wifi file explorer pro app to transfer video files ONTO my 10.1 but am at a loss how on earth this is done
i've tried to upload the file to my directory on the mac but if I simply choose download it just downloads to my mac...I can't see a way of tranferring the data onto the tab itself.
If anyone uses this app, can they please post a step by step dummy's guide so I can get data onto the tab!
Thanks!!
Run the app on the Tab. It will give you a weblink to whatever IP address your Tab is using on the network and a port (example: 192.168.1.134:4567) or something like that. Run that in a browser on a computer that is on the same network
It should give you a files/folders interface and you should be able to see the directory tree of the tab in this browser window. If you navigate to where you want to put your files (example, the Movies folder), there should be a button on the lower right called upload. Navigate to the file to upload to your tab. Then you need to hit the "Start upload" button that is just below where you select the file. If it's a large file, you may have to wait a bit.
Hope this helps.
Thanks but it won't work...it'll update what i have on my tab (I renamed a few files) but try as i might, it wont' actually transfer files from my mac to the tab just vice versa.
I've bought the usb adaptor and that's worked fine in getting data on to the tap without any issues so far, so at least there's a work around.
That's weird. The same setup works fine on my Mac. Are you running Snow Leopard or Lion? That may have something to do with it

[Q] Rooting while in China...

So I got a B&N Nook Tablet for Christmas. My family sent it to me from the States, but after playing around with it, it seems the only way this thing is going to be very useful for me is if I can install my VPN on it. As there's no native way to do this, I have been trying to root it following instructions I found on a blog.
Which led me here. I have managed to restore to 1.4.0 (after going through a couple Micro SD cards), but I can't download and/or install the hidden settings app. At first I couldn't access the multiupload site without a VPN (I guess it's blocked here in China), but I then set up my laptop as a wireless access point in the apartment with connection through the VPN, so I can access the site on my Nook, but maybe it's because the connection is so slow, I cannot download anything to the Nook from that site. It simply won't start downloading.
Is there any way around this???
Have you tried downloading to your laptop and transferring the file by usb to the Nook?
Bill
have you tried the sd card method? check my signature. One package, all files you need are there. Just need to access the internet once.
Sorry, I should have mentioned in the original post that I did try to download it on my PC, load it to a Micro SD card, then put the card on the Nook and try to open it. That didn't work, either. The Nook didn't recognize it as a file type that could be read.

Rooting may have issues in china, due to the pollution etc.

This is because the security flaw that allows access to install non-market apps must be accessed through the browser.

I don't think there's a way to access and change the DNS address on the Nook without rooting it, which gets back to the original problem...

It can be done if he changes the DNS directly in the router so all the devices that get connected to that router will automatically use the new DNS addresses

I'm using my laptop as a router and my laptop is on a VPN, so when I connect to the network on the Nook, it's through the VPN, so accessing the site is not the problem. It's just how unbearably slow it is. The download never begins!
Oh, and FWIW, yes, I have been using Google's open DNS...
Can you "download" it from your computer through the browser?

Quick question:
- are you rooted? If not, you don't need the hidden apps, you can use appmenu.
Try using your nook browser to download/install appmenu.apk from this link:
http://suipre.com/a68291 - courtesy of spoland from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353040
- Use your nook browser, type in the url of the app link and after it downloads select the little icon in the lower left corner of your nook and select the apk and select package installer.
Then try rooting w/ this method.

A nice post. Well, i'm NOT Chinese but right now living in China. I got NOOK Tablet with 1.4.0. As mentioned at the top, its hard to download these apps here in China. These are blocked. and worst thing is that i don't have VPN either. So i have to stuck with available resources. I'm using connectify through my laptop to connect internet with my tablet. However two days ago it stopped and every time when i try to connect, i get the same error DHCP error (Wi-Fi Error 103). I asked one of my lab fellow to root it using local resources and he did it but while exploring it somewhere i pressed some wrong button and it is reset to factory settings. Now it is showing 1.4.1.
I am NOT a geek and specially in China, i am totally helpless without knowing chinese language and without able to access the required stuff from other places. Can someone help me to download these stuff from other place? and can use SD Card to root it by myself without asking chinese friends to help?
i can use limited (within chinese govt. censorship) internet on laptop but certainly now i can't access internet on NOOK Tablet directly. So, can i root it with internet access only on laptop but not directly on tablet? or any way to solve this DHCP issue? as i do used connectify and accessed internet on NOOK Tablet through laptop. Oh and i do bought 32GB (Class 10) SD Card specially for this tablet.
Thanks a lot.

-Hello first of all as you got the 1.4.1 update you need to download the acclaim_update.zip to go back to 1.4.0 from AdamOutler's thread in developing section because you just can't root in 1.4.1. The file is hosted XDA so i think you should not have problem downloading it, once you're done the ∩ button won't work so you need to follow these steps in order to bring it to life.
- Once in 1.4.0 next step will be to root by using Indirect's(recommended) or cfoesch's methods for that you just need internet 1 time to download tgps_launcher.apk the rest you do it in your laptop plugged to your nook. If you fall into issues with drivers or anything check my FAQ (link is in my signature)
I will post 2 video links follow them in order:
1. Bypass registration of Nook Tablet by Albert Wertz
2. FREE How To Root Nook Tablet Step by Step by Albert Wertz of Tabletroms
PS: try if possible in the app or your laptop that you share internet to your tablet somewhere to change the DNS addresses to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 because you need the tgps_launcher

Hi Veronica, thanks for detailed reply.
First of all, i solved the issues of my router. so, now i can connect the NOOK Tablet with internet through router. But again, can't access youtube & some other websites (by default). I've also downloaded acclaim_update.zip & downgraded it to 1.4.0. After successful setup, i immediately disconnected/turn off wifi from the device. But further going to root by using Indirect's method, i again need usbdrivers.zip, tgps_lancher.apk and Nook&Zergy.zip which are not accessible inside china. so again i'm stuck here. is there any other alternative place from where i can download these files? or i can provide shared space on my NAS for that and if you can upload there? (with bundle of thanks)...

[Q] TizzBird F10 media player

Hey all XDA users.
I hope you can help me out!
I am starting to develop my own custyom roms. I am a noob on this, but day by day, I get more aquainted with the Android system.
I found a new challenge. I got myself a TizzBird F10 "Smart TV box". It is an Android media player with no space for a harddrive.
TizzBird Web Site
OTA Update ZIP file (unpack and rename to zip or gz
It has only 4 USB host slots, a SD card slot, 10/100 wired nic. I succesfully connected my Wireless N adapter from my popcorn hour.
The android system is 2.3.3 (for now) but it is upgradeable to 2.3.5 using OTA firmware.
My first goal is to try to get root access.
The thing does not have an USB slave connection, so i can't get ADB access. Is there any way to get root access another way? Maybe through ADB over TCP?
Or before I try to brick my device... is it possible to modify the OTA update? I downloaded the 2.3.5 OTA update from their website, and I can see the android structure within the ROM using winrar or 7zip.
Maybe it is possible to zergRush the system from within? Have SuperUser added to the OTA? Busybox etc.
Sure, I can just "copy" those APKs and tools into the .gz file, but would it help when I flash that modified file?
My ultimate goal is to get my google account working so I can get access to Google Music, since the device has not been licensed to use the Android market...
Thanks in advance or ideas you may have.
Update:
For now I have installed the following.
Android Market
GMail
Google Services Framework
Google Music
All works well, exept for acually playing the google music. It loads the albums, but hangs at pressing "play".
I use poweramp as my musicplayer,it's the best there is, on my F30,
Could I ask where you bought it ?
Did you just use an adapter converter for north american power plugs ?
I found this link to buy it:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Valueplus-T...ultDomain_0&hash=item3a706e8b4b#ht_8980wt_905
But it is clearly written;
All of our products are customized for Korean electric environment.
In Korea, we use 220 Voltage and Type C plug.
Some products has a adapter and in that case, they support Free Voltage and Type C plug.
Please pay attention to this point.
I'm in Canada.
Thanks.
I'm interested in the OS of the TizzBird.
The one on the F30 and the new N1 stick.
It's a beautiful UI/UX which would go great on Tablets, especially when connected to a large TV.
If you can provide the Launcher and other Apps from it, would sweet.

May I ask you how to do it?
Or can you give me some links to get a better unterstanding of how to modify the original firmware to my own needs?
Here is some dude that made custom firmware for the F10 and F20 (=F30 without the hard disk)
