Hi Everyone,
My wife wants me to root her One X+ (AT&T) so I can put a ROM that she likes on there, but I wanted to know if there was a way to back up all of her contacts and stuff like that without being rooted?
I was reading the guide on how to root this phone and it says I have to unlock the bootloader first and then root it? And by unlocking the bootloader all data will be erased.
I guess what i'm asking for is a "guide" on how to back up all of her apps, pictures, and contacts so I can restore them after the root and ROM flash.

You can back up all apps with astro file manager or another app backup app. I save all my contact to my google account, so when ever i get a new phone when i log into my google account my contacts are auto restored. you can back up her pictures using either google drive, or another cloud service, or just save them to your PC/MAC, then copy them back to the DCIM folder.
EDIT: when you back up the apps using astro or the like, make sure you save the file to your computer, IIRC rooting the phone even erases the "SD card".

You don't have read access to /data/ on an unrooted devices AFAIK.

Backing up contacts and SMS/MMS is easily done inside the contacts / messaging app (or via your wife's Google-account).
It gets complicated if you want to back up any app data (like gaming highscores etc). Some apps store this data on your "sdcard" which you can access with your computer. But anything that is stored on /data/... like most apps and their data can't be accessed without root.

I've used before, but on a different phone.
Should be completely universal, just make sure you're SDK is up to date
Follow the guide, then find an unnecessary app. Delete it and then do a restore, if it works it works
Make sure you follow the guide completely and read everything, they are a few things that will prevent it from doing a backup

First off let me say if this is adressed in another thread or video, im sorry!
But my question is this: How does titanium backup work?
For example, if I run a full system recovery with TB and then flash the sbf file and then load gingerblur, can I then recover all of the settings and apps from titanium backup? If so, how might one go about doing that?
Another example would be, if I return my atrix for a new atrix for whatever reason, could I recover everything after that?
Thanks in advance for all your help guys!

When you start tibu press menu then batch, then select "backup all user apps" (I think its first). Let it run. Then you can run SBC and Ginger blur then install tibu from the market, open it press menu, batch, then go about 1/2 down to "restore missing apps with data" and start it and when its done you have all apps with settings back.
A also highly recommend buying tibu premium as it makes most of this automated.

Ok thanks for the reply! So titanium backup creates a recovery file on the phone that wont be erased and ill always be able to access it?
Also does it work if I get a new phone?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Yes, that would be my question as that is where I am.
I have the directory on my sdcard-ext; I've copied it to the empty directory of the same name on the sdcard yet I can't seem to get at any of my old backups.
What did I miss in the process? Is there a way to make it LOOK at this saved data?
Well I don't know about not being erased; the program backs up the application and all of its data into a folder. You can do single applications or all of them.
If you are say, resetting the phone or doing a factory reset, this is essential if you want all of your applications back the way you had them.
I'm using two phones and when I got my second, I just installed TB on it and backed up the apps that I wanted transfered wwith data (mostly games and things that don't have cloud data) and copied them to the new phone to be restored.
I just bought the pro version that gives access to dropbox and other things but I haven't used any of the features yet.

I believe TiBu's default location is in /sdcard/titaniumbackup (From root location). Now once you back up your apps all that information is stored in that "Titaniumbackup" folder. Now what you can do is copy that folder and where, even your computer and it's saved. You can even load that folder on a different phone and run TiBu on the phone and install the apps on that phone. Usually when you flash roms or even the SBF file it wont erase the internal SD card, at least I've never had an issue with my internal SD being erased in the last 2 years. Just take your titaniumbackup folder and put it on to you internal SD card and TiBu should recognize it no problem.
As far as how it saves it, I think it saves the .apk and it also saves another with the app settings.
Hope this helps clear some stuff up.
Ok cool, thank you very much for the help!

Any user guide out there for if you are replacing your phone with a new phone of the same kind andwhat to do in trying to getting everything onto the new?
I am replacing my broken htc thunderbolt with a new htc thunderbolt. I want everything to copy over, even the data in memory on the phone. I assume something can be done. I've searched the q/a forum briefly but thought i would just post a question.
I'm guessing your not rooted. If you are you can use titanium backup.
Otherwise you will be limited in your choices and you can't backup data. Use astro file manager to backup apps. sms backup and bookmarks sort and backup. That's all I know of. Also make sure your contacts are saved to google.

Oh, great. I didn't think of looking that up, man. I will definitely go and get familiar with it. Thanks!

It's very easy especially if you just simply move your memory card from your old phone to new phone. You should backup your apps first though. I use Astro for that.

What does that mean ?
When I got my eris replaced, I nandroided the old one and flashed it back to stock before sending it back. Then I rooted my new eris and flashed my nandroid back.
Assuming your rooted and keeping the sd card from the broken phone, just insert old sd card in new phone, root, and restore nandroid backup. You'll be exactly where you left off.
Good Afternoon All,
I have just bought a new SGS2 White and I already have SGS2 Black.
My question is
how do I copy every thing from my old SGS2 to new SGS2.
How can I remove all my data and factory rest my old SGS2.
The old SGS2 was T-Mobile UK branded but I installed UK Unbranded Firmware on it..So
Does Factory rest reverts it to T-Mobile Firmware
Do I loose root.
Just backup with titanium or something and save on your sd card... put that sd card in your new phone - restore...
Sync contacts to google - any particular data your referring to?
Factory reset will wipe all data etc - if you want stock firmware etc flash a stock rom
If your rooted im sure you could figure out how to reset - if not - google will have the answers if you search
Edit - could also be done through nandroid too if you have cwm etc
Note - don't restore system apps!!!! will cause problems
Just out of curiosity, with regards to not restoring system apps. Is there no way to restore everything to a new device, ala iTunes and an iPhone? I don't need to do this, but I always assumed you *could*.
1) To copy your old SGS2 to your new SGS2, do a Nandroid/CWRecovery backup of your old one & copy this backup to your external SD card, root your new one, put the SD card in and restore the backup of your old phone to your new phone with CWRecovery.
2) Flash a stock rom, do a factory reset.
3) No. You want T-Mobile firmware back on it, you need to find T-Mobile firmware and flash it (hint: search on here). If you flash stock firmware back onto your phone, yes you'll lose root.

Why would you need to restore system apps? Sms' can be backed up, contacts and calender and mail can go with you to any phone thanks to being synced with google...
You can use nandroid but make sure you have the same version you are restoring from and to - i personally don't think it's too much hassle to set up a phone again - full wipe flash and im back to normal in 30 mins
Oh, I agree, it's very little hassle. I've been across several roms and backed up certain applications but almost always started fresh. Which is why I had to ask, I've never had to do that kind of restore before. I just find it interesting that a full restore like that can't be accomplished in the same way that you can with an iPhone. Thanks for the info though.

Contacts will move the second you sign into your google account. They are synched to google automatically. Messages you will either need to use Titanium Backup, or something like SMS Backup+. (which backs up your SMS to your GMail account, and can restore from there as well) Game save data, you will need Titanium Backup.

Depends on what you want. Titanium is for individual apps. CWM recovery can do the whole phone.

That isn't always true. I would strongly recommend confirming that your Google account is configured to sync your contacts. Some people disable that and then don't realize, and lose their contacts. Better safe than sorry.

I stand corrected. This is true. I answered the way I answered operating on the assumption that the poster doesn't seem to be someone who would know to disable contact sync though.

Based on Root Explorer search
Doing a search for sms found this file on my phone - /data/user/0/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
I can't say for sure if this is it, but that database sure has all of my sms in it
As I'm sure you will also recommend that your friend does future backups of his sms, I thoroughly recommend SMS Backup & Restore. It has worked well for me for a long time, and automatic backups are very easily scheduled

Believe it or not, i have tried locating/searching for mmssms.db before my post...and found nothing
Think what i'll do, is download sms backup and restore....backup my sms'es...and see what the backup file is called...hopefully it will give me an idea where to search (for future ref)...thx for the tip
One thing i DID notice though, is that the "internal" storage, is actually called SDCARD? what a way of naming an internal storage. If i think about INTERNAL storage, its def NOT called an SDCARD...rather call it intstorage, or something like that....it will def confuse people...as we all accept the word SDCARD as a device you plug INTO th cell...and not a build in device...

If you want to backup your sms when switching from a stock samsung rom to another install Titanium Backup from the store (it's free). Find something called [SMS/MMS/APN] and do a backup.
After you install another samsung rom (with wipe), you can just open Titanium and restore Data from the save you made. Make sure you go inside the sms app first and untick 'Delete old messages'. Do a reboot and youre done.
If you are interested in adding new sms messages to your samsung rom (when you used cm9 for example, use Sms Backup and Restore, it's also free on the store). Do a reboot. Save your sms/mms with titanium and youre done.
I havent found a way to transfer mms messages between samsung and cm9/aosp/aokp roms yet.

I guess that you are aware of this but ... just in case ...
The internal storage that you are calling "sdcard" is only partly correct. If fact sdcard is below the top level root. So, sdcard is actually /sdcard, and the data directory where I found the database is /data (not on sdcard, but off the root directory). To get to this you need a rooted phone, and a file explorer like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer.
Sorry if you already knew this, but the sdcard thing was quite confusing to a newby like me before I had done quite a bit on the rooted phone.

Sure u can. Just copy the TB up folder to your pc then once you got your new phone just copy the TB folder to your new phones sd card. But to avoid any force close just restore app only and make sure you havnt back up any system app from you previous phone.

What you can do is set your titanium backup location to a folder on your external sd, and then batch backup all of your downloaded apps + data (dont backup system apps) on your old phone to that folder. Move that sd to your new s3 and re-download TB. Point the backup location to the existing folder on your sd, and then batch restore all of your apps (dont restore data, unless its for specific apps such as games).
And how would you copy sms/mms-messages, contacts, logins (facebook etc.) and mail (that is: not gmail, but k9mail) from an old Desire to the S3 ?
TB does not seem to do this well, that is to say, not when I just tried this.
It does not even offer a 'restore' option from a just created backup, since it's just created and does not regard it as from a different phone.
Are there any other apps that do android phone-migration well?
