[Q] weird wifi issues with android! (play store & whatsapp) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

right, this one is a weird one, and i just cant figure it out!
i have 2 android devices at home; a Nexus One and a HTC One S. both exhibit the same issue
in short, when I'm connected to wifi at home, i'm unable to use Google Play or send pictures in whatsapp. gPlay says no network or network timeout when opening the Play app, and whatsapp will just sit there trying to send a photo (the little grey clock icon).
when i'm on any other wifi network; home, friends or parents house, or use the vodafone (UK) network they both work.
to make it weirder, i can push install apps via the Play Store via a PC browser when i'm on wifi, i just cant use the Play app on the phone.
so, it seems like something specific to my ISP/home network right?
so far, this is what i've done to try and fix the issue...and the outcome (works = apps function as expected. fails = i continue to experience issues):
- enable Internet Passthrough via USB cable on the phone (uses laptop network connection). this works. Eliminates router issues?
- configure infrastructure wifi with windows7 Internet Connection Sharing and connect phone to this new wifi network. this fails.
- tried another AP from work (Cisco 1130AG - we use these at work where i am able to sucessfully connect). This fails. Eliminates potential wifi chipset compatibility issues?
- full wipe of HOS phone. this fails.
- used google to find many reports of similar issues, but seem to be the opposite of me; they sugest wifi as a solution, with broken APN settings, or to clear cache of the 'google play store' app on the device experiencing issues.
- opened firewall ports on router (TCP/UDP 5228 according to the google play FAQ), also stuck phone in DMZ. this fails
- firmware and full factory reset on router. fails.
it's been going on for so long that i cant remember when it started (a number of months). i've changed ROMs on my HOS phone and that has no effect either. i dont recall having issues relating to anything specific; one day it just started happening and not worked since.
have i missed anything, and can anyone think of any more ideas? is this something i'm just going to have to live with? does google have any human contact support method for this?

[Q] Internet connection problem (WIFI)

Hi all,
I got problem with internet connection on my HD2 (ROM 1.48). There are 2 ways I connect to the internet - WIFI and GPRS. GPRS connection works fine - I can download and read e-mails, make backups with MyPhone, update weather information, etc. But when I connect to the internet with WIFI, there are only 2 things I can do. I can browse web pages with Opera and update Twitter messages. But I can´t download e-mails, make backups, update weather information, etc. When I try to update or backup something, there is connection error (through that connection between phone and router is fine and web pages are running).
It seems to me like most of applications want to connect to internet via GPRS only. Is there any way to set up (or check) the phone to connect to the internet via WIFI when it is turned on?
Thanks for any advice
Sorry cant help but agree - it would be fantastic if there was some way of knowing / controlling when it used GPRS data and when it uses wifi. When wifi availabe obviously would rather use that than be charge a small firtune for data.
Any one out there about to help with this??
Internet browsing
Ditto. I can - after HUGE effort - connect WiFi but I cannot browse the internet using either Opera or IE. 2 year old Nokia connected and browsed literally within 2 secs! Also, the phone keeps connecting via GPRS all the time even with data connections off. Can anyone help? Thanks PS I know it's unproductive & forgive me, but I have to get this off my chest: this is the worst cellphone I've ever owned. Bluetooth doesn't work, internet doesn't work, handsfree car kit doesn't work. Does anything work?

correction, YOUR Bluetooth doesn't work, YOUR internet doesn't work, YOUR handsfree car kit doesn't work.
Get it exchanged. (if they genuinely dont work)
@others, go to settings menu all settings connection connections advanced select networks.
there are two dropdowns, in teh top one should be the name of your mobile data, , this is what automatic progs will use to connect to the web, in teh bottom one it should be 'the internet' (or sometimes 'my work network'), meaning they use wifi if available, and data if not.
(At least thats how they should work....)
If you set the top one the same as teh bottom one, nothing should try to use mobile unless wifi is not connected.
Could be a proxy problem? some operators set up a proxy, which can screw with connections.
samsamuel: Thank you for your advice. I´ve tried it - in both dropdowns I got "my work network", but no success.
I´ve found something interessting. When I turn on YouTube client (using WIFI), I can´t play videos. That should be ok when I got problem with internet connection. But YouTube client shows on the welcome screen preview of today´s added videos. So the question is why should application download preview of video, but it can´t play the video? I´m a little bit confused
Thanks for the suggestion, but I had tried that already and it did not work. I don't think it is just my cellphone. There are many comments re the HD2 that make it clear that it does not work with a Parrot handsfree carkit, Motorola S9 headset etc, and the 2 earlier posts reveal problems using WiFi too. It seems to be problematic on many fronts. I cannot even connect it using Windows Mobile via an USB port! And while I appreciate all suggestions it seems to me that this model is a (very expensive) lemon and frustrates huge numbers of owners. I find it odd that a 2 year old Nokia N95 can connect and browse instantly and a 'smart phone' doesn't work at all. I find it to be very gimmicky. I don't need twitter, facebook etc. I need voice dial, good PC software (like Ovi and PC suite) and bluetooth that works etc. The HD2 has none of this, but great graphics of a windscreen wiper, exactly the sort of pointless gimmick that reveals that the designers were interested in making a toy and not a useful phone.
I suggest you try and install "HTC_Wi-Fi_onDemand_by_Krocher". This program will always use wifi when available and stop the GPRS from connecting and will also keep your wifi on a stand-by. Please do read through the thread as you have to make sure that no programs using wifi are activated when you want it to be off. For me it solved several problems with wifi.
Second thought is to upgrade to one of the much more stable and already tweaked OS's. There are quite a lot out and you'll find everything about that on this forum as well.
Last thought, if it does not work it must be something to do with either the settings or the OS version as for others it works absolutely fine. These are complicated phones that, much like computers, must be set and tweaked to the correct settings in order to get the best out of them. If you just want a "buy and run" phone this is not the one.
Success,
Itamar

Internet issue, grey bars not going into blue bars

I've had my prime for about a month and a half
I've started to notice an issue with the wifi.
I've tried reading up on google for people with similar problems. But it has been hard to isolate my problem midst the myraid of wi-fi problems primarily those who have issues with the wifi strength being sub par.
The deal is ... Start of the day, walk onto campus, log on to the wifi. Now in order to use my university's wi fi I need to enter my ID details for it in order to connect. So normally I go into Dolphin and click google, and the web authentication page will come up. So I type in my details and the internet works fine, the grey bars turn to blue.
I've read a lot about the difference between grey bars and blue bars, like grey bars means it's connected to the internet but not synced to the google account. However for me, grey bars mean absolutely no internet.
Then further on in the day. I move to another part of campus, then suddenly I've got no internet. I'm guessing because I've disconnected from 1 particular region and attempted to connect in another. Or the transformer prime goes into some hibernatory state while it's unused on standby in my bag.
I can't even get to the authentication page. The signal is fine as shown on wi fi analyser, but it just doesn't transmit everything. I try restarting my tablet, forgetting the wi-fi location and reconnecting. Nothing works.
Still says the connection is fine, but no information is getting transferred.
The same thing happens at home with my wireless internet.
Where the internet bars stay perpetually grey. Now the solution to the problem, is to restart the router, then the internet is fine. However in university, this obvioiusly is not a solution. And I depend on the wi - fi for my university studies, so having no wi fi for the tablet pretty much renders it useless.
Just today, at home. The internet was working fine and I had to restarted the router. And now I've got the problem. If I were to reset the router, I think the problem will cease. Nothing wrong with the signal. It's connected, just no information being transmitted.
Now I'm hoping it's something on the tablet that I can change. If I really have to, I'd factory reset. I've read something about this issue on XDA, where the solution was something to do with static IPs. Now I'm not too tech savvy and have no experience in rooting or playing around with ROMS, so I didn't really understand.
If there is anyone out there has come across this probelm, I'd appreciate any help.
As well as whether factory reset has ever worked for anyone

In home iv always had blue bars, but in my university, they are grey too. I figured this was because of the proxy, but even after configuring the proxy settings in the tablet definitions, i only could get the broswer to worrk, because i think those definitions only work for the http port. In order to be able to connect with other apps, i needed to download an app called proxydroid, but you need root for this. I dont know if this is related to your problem but it may help. Good luck.
Yeah me too when i. Home or somewhere else their green but wen i log into my schools wifi i get gray bars and no internet so what i did os get an everclear portable router lol .. i think its the schools wifi
Blue = full two way communication with Google services
Grey = partial or no communication with Google services
I would suggest removing your account from your device and then adding your account again. We have been able to test that Google services should work on the secure network.

[Q] Qustion for Networking experts

Hi
I am trying to connect to my office wifi via proxy server.
Scenario 1: I am using Samsung Bada (wave 1), connected to the internet successfully and also any applications that require an internet connection including Samsung's app store.
While, connecting via open networks like home wifi and other friends' wifi also worked without any issue.
Scenario 2: Now I also have an android based Galaxy pocket: even after entering all the required proxy setting as mentioned above, I can access websites via browser but cannot access samsung's app store, google's play store, skype, sipdroid etc.,
I know it is nothing to do with the network administration as I am still accessing via my samsung wave but not via android. Please help me in identifying what I am missing. Is there anything like a network profile I need to assign for these applications?
thanks
S
Figured out the solution
Sometimes it is pathetic to notice that I didn't receive a single suggestion after I posted my question above. This is not how it used to be when we had smartphones that were just running windows long time ago.
There were lot of suggestions that comes up within a few minutes of posting, now after the invent of android and so many devices we have so many members but knowledge sharing has decreased considerably as each person is busy with solving their own issues.
Well, let me come back to the point - All that I needed to do was to run an app like 'proxydroid' or 'auto proxy lite' from one of our members from xda-developers to solve this issue. In order, to run these apps the device needed to be rooted. I rooted and installed this app and from that instance I am able to make all my apps including skype, google app market and what not all can access internet from my corporate wifi.
However, I noticed that only one application never succeeded this trick - that app is a Voip/SIP application called 'Pronto dialer' which throws a message 'unknown error occurred'. It works fine in an open wifi like at home etc., I am suspecting the proxy setting in the office network clashes with the proxy setting in the dialer...dont know what it is. Anyway I am glad and relieved that I was able to solve 90% of the issue.
Hope the above will be useful for someone with similar limitation from corporate wifi.

Networking issue; anything to check before factory reset?

I'm having a strange issue and wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.. I can access most of the internet (web sites, podcast download, etc), over WiFi and cell data but some things like my imap email seem to get "stuck" (eg, my email client says "socket timeout"). I've learned that if I switch networks, from WiFi to cell or vice verse, the connectivity seems to start working again, but eventually hangs up again. This is happening on both a OnePlus One running Android 2.x and an Asus tablet running 4.4. They both seemed to present this issue around the same time, but a few things changed around the same time that I remember;
1 I installed the WeChat app
2 The WiFi router I connect to most often changed
I uninstalled WeChat but the problem persists.
I want to blame the WeChat app as installing something surreptitious to spy on my network traffic.
Is there any way to see why my network connection is getting "stuck"? Or do I just need to do a factory reset? I'd just hate to go through all the effort of a factory reset just to find I have the same issue.

Play Store doesn't work on home WiFi, but does on Coffee shop Wifi and on cellular

I recently flashed + factory reset my OnePlus One to the latest official CyanogenMod 13.1 image (coming from OxygenOS).
Since the flash, I have been unable to get the Play Store to download anything while connected to my home WiFi.
I've tried the standard clearing various caches, force upgrading play store and play services, etc.
Some data points:
Play store works if I disable WiFi on HSPA/LTE.
Play store works connected to other WiFi networks.
Play store works on other Android devices work on my home WiFi (Nexus 10 and Nexus 4).
If I share my home connection via a WiFi hotspot on my laptop, the internet works, but Play Store still does not. (This makes me think it's not the actual WiFi, but the router configuration).
I've tried disabling IPv6 on my router, as other people with similar issues reported this helping.
I've kinda run out of ideas at this point, it seems like it must be something to do with my internet connection, but I can't figure out what.
I was hoping someone might have a tip for how to debug this further, and figure out what's wrong.
