[Q] Possible to use Note i717 without data plan? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

At&t has me buying a mandatory data plan(3gb) when I use about 300mb a month and that is because I purposely shut off wifi so I dont feel like a jackass for paying for something I do not use...
I have no need at all for data,I am always near a wifi spot,is there a way to make it seem like my smartphone is a dumbphone?
I have a bunch of att branded flip-phones laying around,is there a way to take the imei from of these and put it on the Note i717?
I'm sure if it is possible,it is complicated.Just wondering.
Thanks.

Buy a sim card for a dumbphone and put it in your smartphone
Sent from my MB855 running AT&T using xda app-developers app

I tried to do something similar.
I called At&t and told them that I wanted to use a flip phone and gave them the IMEI and everything,I used it for a few days and after I put it in an Atrix 2 I have. After 3 days I got a text saying they added a data plan for $20 to my account lol.
They can read the IMEI of the phone,if you call customer service, they can even tell you what sim is in what phone at that very moment.

I don't think that will work. I had that argument with at&t about not needing the data add-on for my sister-in-law's phone. She wanted the large screen for SMS and doesn't know the internet exists. I put an old 64k sim in the phone, and within the day the phone was cut off. After a call to at&t, they told me I need a data plan with the phone. They detect the type of phone.
Don't bring up the topic of phone cloning - its illegal and banned on xda, as it should be.

So it is "phone cloning"?
didnt know, thanks for the heads up.
I can understand making data mandatory on a subsidized phone but on one bought off contract,it is unfair.

Activate a flip phone if you don't want a smart phone ...IMHO ....g

Believe me, brother, I'm in 100% agreement with you, but it's at&t's tune we dance to.

I think i am just going to sell this Note i717 and get a Nexus 7 for my tablet needs and pick up a tmobile branded galaxy s or something else cheap.

Pick up a Roger's I717R Note if you want to stay with this phone. ATT can't recognize the phone and won't put you on a data plan.

What kind of plan were you trying? Im using at&t prepaid and i havent been cut off

That doesn't make sense. Sprint phones are CDMA not GSM. Sprint network doesn't use a sim card to register. In other words, no sprint phone on at&t network.

It says MOTOROLA PHOTON. NOT I717..... Not sure where you trying to go with pasting a thread that has no relation to us....
I am pretty sure no one has successfully been able to do this unless the phone has hardware for both radios GSM & CDMA

Yes it has ability for both thread i posted allow for domestic gsm

A Motorola photon from sprint with a Japanese radio. . .glad it works for you. But its off topic and not helpful for the OP.

I've been using AT&T prepaid plan for a few years now, the GNote is my third phone with prepaid plan ($50/mo: unlimited calling, text, data{only for non-smart phones}) but I'm cool with that. So I don't see why you can't do the same.

To add to this comment. At&t will also know if you are using any smartphone from any network or assume its a smart phone I guess. My wife uses a galaxy s 4g exclusive to t-mobile for about 4 months now. Last week she was hit with the 3 gig addition as well. They dont even know what type of phone it is. All she did was turn on the data to download an sms and bam a day later she got the the email.

Do I need a new SIM Card???

Hi,
I just got a new Note for my mom. She is coming from an iPhone 3gs. Do I need to get her a new SIM card? The customer service reps at AT&T said that I do not, but won't that mess up the speed of the phone and stuff like that? Just wondering.
Thanks,
Patti

It'll work , but not lte. I would get a new one. Of course they told me I needed a new one. At least At&t is consistent.
Yes, Lte requires an lte SIM, if you are in an lte area you'll need one to get the best speeds. If lte is not in your area yet you don't really need a new one.
All you need to do is look at the sim num and if its a 25 for 9th and 10th digit then ur good. If its less than that u need a new sim
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
My data wouldn't connect at all until I got an LTE sim. You can download the speed test app to confirm. Also, if you haven't modified it yet, the carrier badge will show what network you're connected to.

They tell you that you have to have the newer sim card no matter what, that is a load of crap. If you have an older simply you have to change the APN setting, but it will still work. Only thing that wouldn't work would be LTE

The iphone has a smaller sim card doesn't it? Its probably easier to get an new sim than to get an adaptor.

The 3GS used a standard sim card whereas the 4 and 4S use the micro, so it'd transfer over just fine

It is needed if you want to take advantage of all data speeds. Yeah you can aupposedly change your apn settings but not everyone who buys an lte phone knows about changing them. When 4g lte phones first came out so many people called in cuz they got new phones. Didnt want to use the new sim ao when the data plan was put to the correct one data still didnt work. Had them use the new sim and issue resolved. End of story

While we are on the topic of simcards (i figured better to ask here then make a new topic) I'm currently in the republic of Georgia and my host mother really likes my galaxy note. while Sam sung phones are very popular here the note is not here. if she was to buy a note online could be put a Georgian simcard in it? the guy at the at&t store before i left said something about the code not being unlocked yet or something so someone there would have to know what they are doing. i know there is a international version so if possible should she buy that person?
The international version comes unlocked meaning that it can use any sim card. I believe you can get it online for between 450 and 550 USD, but I've not looked at prices for a few months.

The inernational N7000 version is just a little bit different than at&t i717 on the capacitive buttons area. But other than that she won't see any difference. That would be a sweet gift.
Ok thanks for all the replies. From what I have been told, she can keep the 3GS card which fits just fine, and she can keep her old 250MB data plan for now since she barely used any of that data with the iPhone. But I'm suspecting now that she can actually see the screen and she has been playing around with this phone more in the past week than she has with the iPhone in the past 3 years, I better upgrade her soon. Oh, the reason she didn't get a new SIM card, is that this phone was an insurance replacement for my old phone. And I got a new phone in the mean time while waiting (S3). So we are both happy, but I miss my screen real estate!!!
Thanks,
Patti

data issues

I purchased an S 2 from AT&T a while back. I have sense let my plan run out and now bought a prepaid SIM card. the problem is is that now my data does not work because of the 4 G AT&T does not offer 4 G with a prepaid. there is hardly any 4 G coverage where I'm from anyways but I would at least like the 3G to work. is there a way that I can get it to work like flashing ROM or something. I'm not a total noob to this stuff I just hang out at android Forums because of my zte. thank you very much for any of your help.

If your SIM card doesnt allow it, then its not gonna be possible. No S/W can change that.
But if your SIM does allow 3g, then odds are you need proper APN settings. Google it if thats the case.

I would think that it would the 50 dollar monthly unlimited plan. from everything that I've read thus far I've got it narrowed down to something with the phone. I read about the apn settings once before and thought that that was it so I will definitely read more and do what needs to be done.thanks

By any chance are you using Straight Talk? You were vague about which prepaid service.
Straight Talk is supposed to offer an AT&T compatible sim that actually works off the AT&T network.

sorry about being so vague yes it is the AT&T prepaid service. I'm doing the apn settings as we speak so will see if they work.
I had the 50 dollar unlimited plan as well but it really is only for calling and texting. I still had to purchase a data plan and it was 25 dollars for one gig. After I got the data plan 4G started. You have to use the old cingular apn settings to get 4G but you cannot get 4G LTE on a prepaid plan. And just a heads up...when your prepaid needs to be renewed..4G data will shutdown for a few hours.

[Q] Inc 4g on Straight Talk?

My contract with Verizon is ending in a few months and I am wanting to take my phone to a prepaid provider. I am wanting to go to straight talk. Can this be done? If so how?
Also, what are other prepaid providers that will work with this phone?
You should be able to take it with you. Straight talk is a third party vendor that has contracts with all of the major wireless companies.

So if I should be able to can you tell me how I can use my phone on ST.
Do I just need to buy the sim and use it? Or is it more involved?
I dug around and found the only non- LTE phones are able to be used with straight talk at this time. Sorry.

Would it maybe work if you switched the network mode to GSM, or CDMA? Im guessing you might only get 3g service then?

I'm using this phone on ST. I had to buy a SIM card & minutes. The SIM card is the TMo card & I bought a SIM cutter to cut it to the right size. I didn't have any trouble actually getting it to work. There might have been some settings to change, but I found all that here.
I only get Edge data, but I use wireless mostly so not a huge deal. The only thing I haven't figured out, despite much searching & playing with settings, is getting MMS to work. Which didn't seem like a huge deal until I realized that anytime someone sends a group text it's an MMS.

[Q] How do I flash a Verizon HTC Rezound to straight talk.

Sent from my LGL35G using xda app-developers app
Found this with the search function, it's from last year, not sure if it's still accurate.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975953&highlight=straight
"Flashing to Straight Talk" can vary, depending on how you want to go about it... Straight Talk has two types of service, CDMA and GSM, both of which will work on the Rezound to a varying degree.
The CDMA mode is as @mjones73 mentioned, and it required a donor phone to clone the ESN/MEID from to be activated. This will use Verizon service in 3G mode, which is kind of slow (about 600kbps in my area at best) but it will work. The practice of ESN cloning is... umm... questionable though technically possible.
The GSM mode requires a stockish global mode ROM, and a T-Mobile or AT&T SIM card from Straight Talk... Voice and SMS will work out of the box, MMS and data require a little tweaking. There are a few guides out there but @REV3NT3CH is working on a guide to get AT&T 4G on the Rezound... yes, I said 4G! I believe he also has/had 3G working on T-Mobile service with Straight Talk as well. Be patient, those guides will be coming soon, I know he is working on them and they should be ready soon.
I can help anybody flash their phone to straight talk PM me

4G on Verizon (CDMA/LTE) will likely never be possible unless Verizon has a serious change of policy.
4G/LTE may be possible on an StraightTalk AT&T SIM, @REV3NT3CH keeps saying he has it working and will be putting out this step-by-step guide, but so far it seems just like a vaporous apparition.

to answer all the confusion....the htc vigor (rezound) has all the bands to support it...they are just locked by default in the nv....its alot of hex coding and as i do get 4g i also noticed a few errors....like it confusing certain roms to default and do a weird lock and defaults back to cdma only after a few hours of usage on 4g....the reason for its delay on release is kitkat development
As far as gsm goes I didn't even hafta do anything I just popped in my sim card to stock and I could do calls texts yes both sending and receiving (but this is on T-Mobile gsm which should be similar) I haven't found a ROM yet (I'm on PAC man right now) that I can't get everything working on it without too much trouble (I don't have a data plan but I can get MMS to work which works through data)

I'm actually working on a pure gsm kitkat for the rezound....i can also second that right now it doesnt work from straight flash....requires a few build.prop edits and to enter a special menu just to get calling and normal texting to work...data was hit or miss with the 4.4 on the main dev thread...i will also second that using a sim card for straight talk is much less of a hassle than actually flashing the carrier to your rezound and depending on the flash youll never be able to change your rom again without breaking the flash....i use their att version of their sim as tmobile has less likely of a chance to get 4g to ever work on the rezound.....i have gotten it to work with a certain model of their micro sim and sim adapter with a mass multitude of nv edits....
OK been thinking about moving to straight talk with my Rezound. I'm already rooted with custom rom cm10.2. Can I just put in an AT&T straight talk sim card and get 4g coverage? If not are there steps I can do to get 4g working?

no the highest you will get currently is 3g....however i am working on the NV edits (which is required to even get the 3g in the first place) to get full 4g which is only obtainable via the att micro sim and micro sim to normal sim adapter....also you will have to edit the apn settings to get data....same would go if you were to flash it....which just getting a sim is cheaper

No... why would you think that?
Now, if you do something like cloning a MEID/IMEI number, that might fall into a different category, but "flashing" a Rezound to Straight Talk (or most other carrier) involves little more then enabling some of the features and changing a few settings in the phone that are hidden, disabled, or limited by the default carrier.
I think part of the steps to flash the Rezound to get 3g coverage is to have a donor phone and clone it. So you're saying the cloning part would be illegal? What if you own the donor phone and the Rezound outright?

So, you mean move it to Straight Talk CDMA service, not GSM? Different ballgame... ESN/MEID cloning for fraudulent purposes is clearly illegal, doing it yourself for devices you own is a very grey area, the law isn't as cut and dry, if you Google the question of ESN cloning you will find widely varied answers but nothing cut and dry.
I know people who have done it successfully for exactly the purpose and situation you describe and haven't had an issue, but at the same time if Straight Talk/PagePlus or whoever decided to push it, they could say you are performing fraud and possibly violating their terms of service as well since the device ESN is not just a radio identifier, it also is assigned by the manufacturer and registered with a specific device and specific capabilities.
All in all, its your call...no where have I seen this discussion come a black and white answer.
The difference with using SIMs between devices and ESN swapping is clear though and ruled not illegal as the capabilities and service are tied to the SIM and not the not the device itself, as although carriers may require the devices IMEI number for provisioning their services and prevention of fraudulent activities.

I have a friend that wants me to help them get a Verizon phone working on straight talk and I want to make sure I'm not about to unknowingly do something illegal. That's why all the questions. Thanks for the help. Next question.....if the phone has gsm settings they could just switch to that for service and everything is legal? Also what kind of data speeds can be expected? 2g, 3g, or 4g (yea right!!!)?

As I said, the legality is questionable... Its not black and white.
The Rezound is a Global Phone and has GSM capabilities to an extent... 2G/Edge is possible on all US GSM carriers, 3G/HSPA is possible on AT&T based networks with a compatible ROM. 4G/HSPA+ is marginally possible with a LOT of modding, @REV3NT3CH is kind of the master here on that. 4G/LTE is not possible on any non-VZW carrier.
That being said, the Rezound's GSM radios are not tuned for US carriers, so signal strength and data performance suffer.

Note 2 verizon bad ESN. Can it be used on ST?

I'm a new when it comes to this. But if I have a bad ESN Verizon note 2. Can I use it on straight talk at&t with no problems. Cuz the ESN is only banned from verizon?
Also. When using it on straight talk at&t I'd still use Verizon based roms and radios? Just straight talks correct APN settings for data to come in.
Do I need a special ROM to get rid of the this isn't a Verizon Sim card stuff.

I thought they shared banned ESNs between each other? I thought that is why most people either sell it here with a note of bad esn or ship it over across seas.
I purchased a used Verizon Galaxy Note II knowing it had a bad ESN - planning to use it as wifi only. One day decided to try and see if a AT&T gophone sim would work. Don't know about the plan you're addressing - but AT&T absolutely activated the gophone sim. What I think AT&T will not do is activate if the phone's IMEI shows its stolen - but the previous owner not paying his/her bill to Verizon didn't seem to be a problem. Just my personal experience - not a universal, guaranteed answer
It works for me. I installed CM11 on my note and it worked like a champ!
Here's my next question is I'm going at&t st with this Verizon note. Now when I flash clean ROM. Old ROM I like. Do I use at&t network or verizon. Either way I know I have to manually input apn settings.
Am I better off using at&t Roms?...

because its a verizon device use a verizon rom, dont use at&t rom it may brick your device.
I agree with Bonkurei. Stick with Verizon Roms. Do NOT try the at&t roms.Stick with Verizon roms and you will be fine.
I agree run custom roms with Verizon settings

Better to buy I Verizon phone off the street to use with AT&T than an AT&T branded phone. Never know when you might wake up to "we're sorry, but this device has been blocked" lol nice insurance scams

Shot answer yes it will work with no issues, as long as the custom rom allows you to edit apns you will be golden, to get rid of the pesky non verizon sim message, either freeze the Samsung setup wizard apk with titanium backup or delete it all together. I have my Verizon note 2 on ST. I've been running beans 22 and have ad no issues at all. Also when choosing your network choose at&t, Verizon's won't work

Looks like you got an answer. However, carriers do share the ESN and IMEI numbers for devices and check for blacklisted devices. Prepaid plans may be a different matter, but I'd be willing to bet that they wouldn't activate it on any contract plans and you'll not get any kind of warranty on the device. So, if you break it, lose it, or brick it, you'll have to pay full price for the device. Probably would have been cheaper to pay your bill...
