has anyone else had problems with wifi and 3g just dropping and then coming back like over and over again on the latest gingerbread builds ?
Yes

Yes. And it's really, really annoying. But I have noticed it happens way more often on certain APs. I even have Wifi Analyzer running, and the signal never drops when the Wifi cycles. When I'm at work, it may only happen every few hours, even with a much weaker signal from the AP.
It used to be a problem that people would have drops when their screen turned off, but you can fix that by going into advanced Wifi settings and telling to never disconnect. I'm not sure what's causing the problems lately, but I don't remember having this issue with Cyanogen 7.0. Just the 7.1 branch, so far as I can tell, has this issue.
Ok good its just not me.. It's very frustrating as i need these to work like they use to and like dummy i can't find a rom that it was fine on i by mistake deleted all my older copies of build i was using
I am experiencing the wifi cycling as well.

Try using an exteranl
I have noticed my 3G starting to drop in and out. I didn't know if it was just me or not. Glad to see it is not just my phone though.
Yes i read of a fix but it did not work for me so i am going to MacRom . it and tazz stuff come from a different source if i got it right and don't have this problem.
Yes, I've been downloading an app in the past, turned off the screen and lost 3g connection. Really frustrating.

At this point not sure what to do i have tried ever new rom have done all suggestions to fix it nothing. I guess back to old school...
Assumed you've checked already: Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > National data roaming is checked (along with Data enabled) but International data roaming unchecked. System select is set to Automatic?
I've checked it & IDR was somehow turned off & it caused "connection errors" whenever I switched between 3G/1X data and turning off/on wifi network.
Flashed from the "newest" radio to Sprint (also CDMA for the Hero) - now, Baseband ver. 2.42.02.10.29 - seemed to helped somewhat with reception at home with very, very poor 3G coverage - getting horrible1X data speed ( .... what's 3G) Now, speedtest.net showing 208 kbps d/l and 211 kbps u/l - before, it was 140 kbps d/l and 950 kbps u/l - as tested on data connection when switched off home's wifi router.
Well tried what you just suggested and nope still not working right. so let's fresh wipe of everything including sd card.. did that reset router did that . turn off power for like 20 seconds or more to router did that . did what you just said to try nope no luck. And set to not sleep when screen turns off. none of these have help one single bit. About to pull my hair out smash this little bugger and go get some other kind of phone.....
Have not flashed GB on my wife's Eris yet, but I have seen this on my OG Droid & have not been successful resolving it -- some have reported success by changing to a fixed IP & WiFi sleep policy of Never in Advanced Wifi settings -- did not work for me...
I've only had success with using my phone as a wifi hotspot with the Miks Rom, every other rom that I use, I've tried Barnacle, Wireless Thether for Root users and just about every other app available on the market but nothing works.
Which rom are you guys using and what wifi hotspot app works? Thanks!

Good deal! Forgot to mention that usually you need to check off 'routing fix' and 'mms clamping' in the settings of the wireless tether app. Not sure if you already got that or not, but if you run into any issues, keep that in mind.
For me those apk's only work on 4G, never on 3G. Any idea what am I doing wrong?
(Yes I've tried checking and unchecking the Routing Fix and MMS Clamping (whatever that is) 100 times. And I've tried using "automatic" device selection vs. selecting the EVO 3D. And tried using DNS servers other than the default ones. Always the same result, no tethering with 3G.)

I just got home from NYC and on the bus I was tethering via 3G the whole time.
The routing fix: on
MSS Clamping: on
Device profile: HTC Evo 3D
WiFi Tether version 3.1 b5
I even had WPA2 encryption on so others couldn't steal my bw...
Worked fine the whole ride, even when it would drop to 1x due to coverage areas.
Hmmm... didn't work for me, I'm using the same version of WiFi Tether, I've tried that group of settings many times and tried them again just now. Same issue: 4G joy, 3G no joy.
Soooo... I gave WiFi Tether some tough love... While I've uninstalled and re-installed it many times with no joy, this time I cleared data (via Menu / Settings / Applications / Manage applications / WiFi Tether / Clear data) BEFORE uninstalling WiFi Tether. Then after re-installing, now it's working on 3G or 4G... I can switch 4G on and off multiple times and it all works. I'm not terribly optimistic that it will continue to work on 3G, but at least I know one way that it DID work and hopefully I could get it to work again if it fails... thanks for the help.
Any clue as to a bluetooth tether?
I understand that WiFi is faster but Bluetooth is cheaper on battery life.
I'm running Scott's CleanRom 4.3, using Wireless Tether for Root Users to provide a hotspot for my laptop. Works great using Wifi Tether 3.1 b11 and up...for those wondering, here's how to set it up:
Device profile: Generic ICS works beautifully, so does Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE. I think there's a little less latency using Generic ICS.
Setup Method: netd (master)
Wifi driver reload: Check ON.
Routing fix: check ON.
Should work on both LTE and 3G.
Now for the problem...
Open up your favorite browser and put your connection to good use (if you can spare the data, or have an unlimited plan...I am not responsible for carrier surcharges). Watch a ton of YouTube. Download stuff. Look at porn. Whatever...just put a good heavy load on your connection. Try to make it fairly continuous.
If you run into the same problem I have, then after some time, regardless of the amount of traffic passed, the connection will stop responding. Sometimes restarting Tether works. Sometimes though, it seems that all data is frozen...can't use the phone's browser, can't use any apps that rely on data...nothing gets through except possibly pings.
I would like to see who else runs into this issue, on what ROMs, and whether there is anything we can do to fix it.
First of all, sorry if this has been posted.
I just flashed the ICS meanROM yesterday and quickly realized the Wireless Tether did not work.....only the HotSpot worked on it would kick me off of 4G. I did some research and realized that this was a problem being experienced by many.
I came across a thread here on XDA on the Samsung forums and decided to try it out. What do you know? I have wireless tether working on my phone on 4G. Please note I am running meanROM, but supposedly, this works on all ICS roms. Apparently on our phones, if you set the device profile as an Evo 3D, it does not work properly. I take no credit for this, I got it from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522867
1) Download and install wireless tether from the market.
2) Set the device profile as "Samsung Galaxy Nexus CDMA" or "Generic ICS".
3) Enable routing fix and MMS clamping.
Enjoy!

Most people just set it to "Generic ICS" profile. Pretty obvious profile to try.
Wifi Tether has worked on every ICS ROM I tried since day one. Even if you flashed the dreaded VM Firmware.
Also described in MeanROM ICS OP since he started it.
Generic ICS, mss clamping and routing fix worked for me. Not sure if the latter two are needed, but why mess with something now that it works.
I'm using WiFi tether beta as well.

Tethering not working for me
mswlogo: You said tethering even works of you flashed the dreaded VM firmware.
I flashed the "dreaded VM" software and have not been able to use tethering since.
I have it set up properly, but when I try to start it, it just shows the spinning circle and it sticks like that , in other words it is perpetually trying to start. To the point that I have to force close it to get the app to stop. I have wiped cache and Davlik.
Is there a thread somewhere that will tell me how to get tethering working if I flashed the VM firmware. The threads I have seen all say that the VM firmware update has been known to break tethering. I am waiting for Unknownforce's firmware downgrade fix that is coming soon: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653777.
Until then I would love to get my tethering back. If you can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

1) I didn't even know that profile existed in the app, but I agree......it is obvious and I would have tried it had I seen it.
2) Due to all the BS on these forums, I don't visit as much as I used to. I just signed on after a few weeks and noticed that there were a bunch of ICS roms available with4G and the camera working and was just excited to be able to flash one. I read about the VM issues, but didn't experience it since I never put that on my phone.
3) If it was listed in the meanROM OP, I must have read right over it. However, when I searched to find a fix, I found a lot of recent threads being started in many different forums were people were asking about wireless tether issues on ICS. When I came across this fix and saw it worked, I figured I'd post it and maybe it would help someone out.

First thing I did after flashing VM Firmware and CleanROM ICS was test Wifi tether.
Wifi tether worked fine. But I lost VPN and that is how I discovered I lost it.
In the process of trying to get VM Firmware off my phone, it got worse and worse.
Until eventually I had no data at all.
So it depends where you're at with the Virgin Mobile Firmware Virus . If you still have Data I believe WIFI Tether should work fine with the correct settings.
Router Fix is required. MSS Clamp works either on or off but I set it on, I've seen in teh past when it was required too.
Finally Got It Working

Thanks for the response. I actually just got it to work. I, like you, thought it must be a glitch bc of the VM firmware. So I did a clean install of the latest MeanRom ICS (v1.4). Once I got everything loaded back, I checked Wi-Fi Tether. It wouldn't work, but the app was not getting hung trying to start like before. It would start but no uoload/download data was registering and my wi-fi only tablet would see my phone but could not connect to it.
I read on a thread about CleanRom that SuperSU and Tether on ICS don't always play well together, so I cleared data on SuperSU and then disabled it and downloaded Superuser. Still no tether,so next I updated busy box (from 1.18.0 to 1.20.0). I then re-enabled SuperSU since it is cooked into MeanROM , then uninstalled Superuser. I ran WiFi Tether again regiving permissions bc I had cleared data on SuperSU and Voila, it is now working perfectly.
I honestly don't know it it was the act of disabling SuperSU clearing the settings, and then re-enabling it, or updating BusyBox, or all of the above in the right order. But it is working! Maybe this will help someone else.
I selected "Generic ICS Device" and it worked for me

For me Wireless Tether does not work too. I have installed a Sense 4 Rom on my device.
I have tried several settings but it never worked for me.
So i have downloaded Barnacle Wifi Tether APP from PlayStore. And voila it works for me on a Sense 4 rom.
In settings you need to check " Skip wpa_supplicant " an then it works. The only thing is, you can only set WPE key encryption.
Try it and give feedback....:good:

Sorta off-topic.
I have massive ping spikes when tethered and gaming on my PC.
Anyone else have/had the same problems? How did you fix it?
Strangely, Skype eliminates this issue entirely, but I can't Skype someone every time I want to do some gaming.
Any thoughts?

Using the Speed Test app on my iPad I am getting the following speeds (4G):
2.02 Mbps - D/L
1.37 Mbps - U/L
Is this normal? Anyone getting quicker speeds?
This is fine but seems a bit throttled for me.. I used to get speeds (in the same area on 4G) with my old Evo 4G at around 10-15 Mbps D/L!
Is it possible to tether a rooted droid incredible 4g running the stock HTC Sense image that STILL has the unlimited data plan (I got the phone just before they killed it last summer)? I have a stock droid incredible 4g (Android 4.0.4) that I simply unlocked the bootloader on and installed/flashed SuperSU from TWRP. I apologize if my terminology is off as I am new to this. I have installed both WiFi Tether and FoxFi and have had no success with either program. I may be configuring something incorrectly or it may not be possible given I'm still on the unlimited data plan. I assumed that rooting my device would somehow allow Wifi Tether to bypass whatever verizon blocks on the unlimited data plans to prevent tethering. I have googled everything I can with regard to this issue and have attempted all the recommended fixes with FoxFi (rename the SSID, reboot the phone, disabled WiFi, etc...). I do not know how to configure Wifi Tether (tried the defaults and a few combinations I found on google) and have found very little to assist further with it. There are multiple device-profiles and setup-methods to choose from in addition to a bunch of other options, and am hoping someone know specifically what I can do or have a combination that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Simplified Questions:
(1) Is it possible to teather on a droid inc 4g with unlimited data?
***These Questions assume '1' above is true***
(2) Can this work in FoxFi, if so, how do I configure it?
(3) Can this work in Wifi Tether, if so, how do I configure it?
(3a) In Wifi Tether, I would need it set up to do a 'hotspot' not an ad-hoc network connection, no clue how to do this...
(3b) In Wifi Tether, which device-profile and setup-method should be used?
(3c) There are a number of options in WiFi Teather, which ones should be selected?
Solved
I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...
Simple, if your on a sense based ROM just use open garden https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=og.android.tether
And in settings select either generic ICS or rezound I forget its been a while but I know it works flawlessly
On cm which I am just use the built in tethering very simple
I use WiFi Tether (currently using 3.2-beta2). Works great. Fast, no drops, etc.
While I am running ViperLTE, I see no reason why it won't work with rooted stock.

I have found that signal strength/area is everything when it comes to speeds - tethering or otherwise. At work, I have intermittent 4G and my tethering speeds are so-so. I have to carefully put my phone in the right spot to get 4G, and that spot varies depending on the weather...
However, at home my signal and 4G are rock solid. 4G speeds, including tethering, are faster than my WiFi connection.
