No need to do that. Just flash Siyah v4 (.tar) via ODIN (I use ODIN3 v1.85) in PDA section. This will give you root, CWM manager app and CWM recovery. This is the single best way to prep your phone for root and custom roms etc.
Its also customary (and tbh common sense) to provide relevant information like your current rom version as this can help in sometimes the supply of more accurate info/steps and saves time.

What is your Product Code, you might find it on the box.
Need this to find you closest matching CF-Root kernel or official firmware.

GT-i9100G.. Is it from the back of the box? Or in it?
If you have an I9100G, you'll need an I9100G kernel. You can find stock ones in Odia's thread: [KERNEL] Insecure Kernels for use with rooting, i.e. GT-I9100G_DZKI1_original and GT-I9100G_ZCKHI4_original. Don't flash an I9100G kernel unless you're absolutely sure yours is I9100G though.

Yes, If you really have a "G", best you check out the previous posters link to the "G" specific thread.
Sorry, can't help you any more than that as not 100% familiar with your model. Don't want to make things worse . G requires different firmware than than the International or T versions that I have.
Best of luck.

[Q] How do I root my Kernel version? (BOLPD)

Hey guys,
How do I root my galaxy s2 with BOLPD Kernel. I can't find any insecure BOLPD Kernels. I've rooted with another kernel yesterday, but it was basicly messed up. Anybody suggestions?
It's the Netherlands version.
It's T-Mobile NL Branded. It is the i9100 version, but with some boot and down animations.
Anybody?
Chainfire said:
Help! Which file do I use ?
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.
Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ? You can ask me to make one, but I can tell you right now, I very very rarely make CF-Root's for kernels on request, unless it is the very latest kernel that has been released by Samsung. In the latter case, be sure to let me know. If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match. You should treat "KG1" as a number, but instead of 1-9, we have 1-9, A-Z (where A would be 10, and Z would be 35). "KG2" is really close to "KG1", "KF1" is not close to "KG1" at all. I hope that makes sense.

which is that new method??
most of the people are rooting their phone for the purpose of flashing Custom ROMS, when they use any method other than rooting custom kernel they wont get CWM, so their next question will be posted How can I install CWM? therefore the best method to suggest for rooting is flashing custom Kernel.
If CF-root is not available for the perticual firmware, there are many other rooting kernels are available for ICS like Siyah, Speedmod etc..regardles of the firmware version number. better to recommend them instead of others....

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
He was failing to understand/find the Cf root, this is the simplest method.
Plus yes it don't give you the cwm manager or cwm, but you can always use the stock recovery and choose that same cwm to get cwm and flash your ROM.
Plus no triangle and no counter.

Need advice: Moving to SIII from SII

I'm getting the SIII this weekend (if all goes according to plan) and I'm just wanting to confirm a few things:
Is it correct that things are basically the same in terms of rooting, etc. as they were on the SII?
If I still have Odin and the drivers installed, shouldn't I just be able to use the same Samsung driver setup to work with the SIII?
What's the best/easiest way to backup the EFS folder? I have used the EFS Pro backup tool for the SII successfully, but I'm not sure if it supports the SIII or if there's something similar.
Which current ROM would give me the most consistent ICS experience with stock components? (I generally prefer stock ROMs)
I'll probably need a SIM unlock also, but I want to backup EFS before I do try it. Which method is best for SIM unlock?
I appreciate all suggestions offered.

Yes, as with all Samsung Galaxy devices it boils down to flashing the kernel / recovery through Odin and then using CWM for any further customizations. Samsung uses an open bootloader, so no hassle.

No, every device has it's own drivers. Windows7 should be able to download and install them on it's own though.

I liked Omega ROM, but since it'll be a new device you can safely try out a few and see which one comes to your taste.
You can also remain stock-only with only Root since the ROM itself is pretty good. You should freeze/remove the apps you don't need though to free up some RAM.

Voodoo unlock doesn't work with the newest Samsung update, but afaik there are solutions to that issue.
One good thing about the GS3 is that you don't have to match your CF-Root to your stock ROM. The same CF-Root will work with every stock GT-I9300 Samsung firmware.
Wasn't as simple with the GS2.
Thanks guys. I'll probably start with CF-Root and experiment with Siyah. My wife will be taking over the SII as part of my SIII purchase negotiations.

Software Update screwed up CWM

Hi Guys,
Now, I'm not the least bit knowledgeable about rooting, mods, or ROMs, or even what they are. All I know is that the two bottom vibrating keys don't work after I had to reinstall a new screen. So I got the Virtual-Button bar, and ended up rooting my I9300 with CWM and SuperSU and Odin.
It's been working great for a few months. Now here's the problem.
I got a software update today, and I didn't even think about it before downloading it. Then when it rebooted, here is what it says.
Virtual Button Bar: Unable to execute as root
CWM: This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-Root v.5.0 or newer. It apperas you are running a different kernel. Various features have been disabled. (Current kernel unknown)
SuperSU: has no apps configured, but I have no way of configuring any apps because I dont have the "right-click" touch-button....
Any ideas on what to do??? I need to either unroot and re-root or find a way to fix it....
Thank you so much!
Sounds like you've lost root access. If so, you can try flashing siyah kernel through odin. This kernel has a handy root/unroot option. Also once its flashed, it auto roots your phone. let me know if this works.
Just FYI: this probably happened because the software update flashed the stock kernel which would have unrooted your phone. Flashing siyah should fix your problem

Sorry about siyah thread i should have been a bit clearer. here's a link to the dev's website http://d-h.st/users/siyah/s3. from here you can download "Siyah-s3-v1.5.3.tar" this is the one that you can use with odin. actually since you've already rooted the phone once before. y not to root the phone the same way? i guessing you rooted the phone by using cf root right?
Your problem is that the OTA update flash the stock recovery and kernel. Just reflash CF Root and it should be ok.

Little help please

Could do with a little advise. I have rooted in the past, most recently my HTC desire. I used to flash roms all the time.
Anyway I have decided to root my s2 and I am having problems. I root view odien and everything goes fine but when it reboots everything is the same and have no root access? any ideas?
If it helps I did the manual ics update a while back, don't know if that has anything to do with it?
Thanks

You're not really explaining the steps you took to root. Flashing a CF-Root kernel through Odin would usually do the job if you want to maintain stock ROM. Otherwise, flashing a custom ROM would also give you root access as most ROMs come with it built in.
I strongly suggest you explain further what steps you took to flash. Because root view odien doesn't say much and is quite confusing.

You should know by now to post the details about your phone.
I could say flash siyah-s2-v4.1.5 via odin(which gives root/perm cwm and safe kernel).
But I wont til you post the details.....

It has always been my preference to root through a custom kernel... If you do decide to go this way, download siyah v4.1.5 and flash it through the PDA section of odin.
Also, as theunderling said, please post your phone details before flashing.
Flashing this kernel will grant you root + permanent CWM

If you followed this tutorial you are already rooted on 4.0.3. If you want to upgrade to 4.0.4 I recommend to flash a stock 4.0.4 via odin then Cf-root (or other prerooted) kernel to have root, custom CWM recovery and be safe from brick bug. Then flash desired custom rom. Yes, custom roms come usually with root.

No you don't. Flash the TAR ( NOT zip.) version of siyah or dorimanx kernel via Odin. You don't need CWM for this. Once you install one of these custom kernels you will have root and CWM and can then install a ROM and whatever else you want via CWM.

Ok thanks mate.
It won't let me download the tar?
Sorted it going to flash the resurrection remix ROM. Says on galaxys2 root.com that its probably the best ROM you can run on this phone. Is this true?

Everything depends on what you expect from a rom. If you look at a picture in my sig you notice that I expect someting different.

Theunderling is not so much patient for new members
It happens everytime you flash custom software to your phone via PC odin.
Use Triangle Away app from Google Play store to remove it. However read carefully the app instructions before you use it.
Regards
OK thanks everyone for your help.
