[Q] Wifi Crashing after Jelly Bean Update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys.
After spending several hours of search and review, I was unlucky to find the information I need. It could be my poor search skill, so my apologies if this is a repeated question.
My S2 is from Bell.
Today my Galaxy S2 got an update to Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (I9100MUGMA5). First, it gave me SIM NETWORK LOCK issue. I did a research here, and found that it means the phone is LOCKED again. So I had to unlock it. (Did rooting first and locked with GalaxSim Unlock) Since then, everything seems to be okay and working fine with an exception of one problem.
When it attempts to connect to wifi, it crashes and reboot itself and it repeats several time until it's finally connected. I tried a few different things but it's got nothing to do with data on/off. It seems solely to be wifi problem.
I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issue I have here.
Should I downgrade to ICS?

What have you tried exactly?

wifi-on/data-off
wifi-off/data-off
wifi-on/data-on
wifi-off/data-on
it crashes and reboot itself whenever the wifi is on regardless data is on/off

did you try any other wifi signals?
Could be a router conflict.
I assume you've already deleted that account and registered again right?

Yeah, I tried the wifi at work today, same issue.
I'm not sure if I deleted that account, but it usually didn't ask me to enter the password to login the wifi, it automatically connects when within the area. But now, it asks me to login everytime wifi is on.
Not sure if I answered your questions. Sorry, not an expert, but having a huge frustration. Thought this jelly bean would be awesome.... :crying:

I'm not an expert, just applying common sense that's all.
It's a good thing wifi at work didn't work. It points to wifi settings.
When you flashed, did you wipe?

Again, sorry for asking the same question that you may have responded many many times. But how do I flash modem? I'm guessing I will have to download the modem and use odin to flash?

Ok, wipe means factory reset I guess.
So at this point, what do need to do? Downgrade to ICS -> Wipe -> Jelly bean update again?

Spending more than half a day to figure out this issue, I don't even know what I'm doing here, so I reboot and wipe data/factory reset.
It went back to factory ICS 4.0.3. Good thing I did backup all data before I did that, so didn't really lose anything.
Now I'm thinking if I want to try Jelly bean again....
Your comment please. And Many thanks for your previous comments. I do appreciate it.

Yea, everything is back to normal (ICS 4.0.3) now. Wifi working okay.
Now, (since it's wiped and factory reset) I will probably update to JB again, see if it works properly this time.
The good thing is that, now I know that I can go back to the ICS in the worst case by wiping and factory reseting.

Lol, factory reset sets your current ROM's settings to default.
Remember when you flashed JB? You had to select language, google account and all that. Factory reset takes you to that instance.
FACTORY (ROM by Google) RESET (Settings back to default).
When I said reboot into recovery I meant Recovery mode, so you could get your JB ROM the way Google set it to work, no user configurations whatsoever, WiFi included

Problem resolved and here's what I did.
1. Downgrade to ICS using Odin.
2. Wipe and factory reset in recovery mode
3. Upgrade to JB using Kies.
There's tons of posts regarding downgrading to ICS. I just picked one and followed the instructions. It gave me an issue that the phone freezed at the booting logo (I guess it's called bricked??), so I just wiped and factory reset the phone that lead to the stock ICS.

[Q] Fascinate Wifi error even multiple factory resets

This started happening a few days ago, the wifi whenever attempted to be turned on, would just say error. I have done multiple factory resets and soft resets. The device has been rooted before, no roms installed. The only things I haven't tried is rom flashing because when ever I try to download CWRM it requires me to download something off the phone, and well, I don't have a data plan either. Does anyone have a solution?

I think you have a hardware problem being you wiped clean and reinstalled. time for a replacement maybe??
Replacement isn't an option :/. Something I've noticed is when I reset the wifi will work for a good 10 seconds then fail and constantly give me an error.

How do you put a ROM on/restore an unrooted phone with a passcode?

I have an i777 (rooted, ROMd, etc) and my friend does also. She put a passcode on hers for some reason and apparently there was some type of software malfunction and she can't get her phone unlocked. So instead of making her wait weeks for Samsung to fix it, I volunteered to fix it myself.
I've already tried Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Everything worked fine but, when the phone booted, the screen asking for the passcode was still present.
Does anyone know of another way to try this out? I promised her I'd have it done by tomorrow and that I'd also put ICS on it . And I really don't want to have to tell her I couldn't do it.
Thanks!
EDIT: I've solved this issue (thankfully)! I went into the stock Samsung recovery and chose to wipe data. It asked for a password and I kept entering random characters until it told me if I kept entering them it was going to wipe the phone's data. So it wiped the phones data and everything is now fine. I've rooted it using Entropy's tool from above and I am currently putting AOKP on it .

Oh really? my previous ROM was passcode protected,, I installed ICS over the weekend and it's never prompted me since then.passcodes seem to be flaky, sometimes mine would carry over from one ROM to another, other times it wouldn't.
Don't know exactly what causes it, I guess maybe try some different ROMs and just be sure to do a full wipe each time and cross your fingers that it disappears

See, I would wipe it, but when I go to wipe it (it doesn't have CWM, just the stock Samsung recovery), it asks for a password. I think I'm screwed .
Nevermind! I've got through the password by getting it wrong too many times. This caused the phone to wipe, and now I have exactly where I need it!
Able to push a kernel with CWM via adb? (sorry don't remember if USB debug is checked by default)
This is interesting.

My 2nd topic in about 20 mins!
I've just flashed Siyah Kernal but made a mistake and flashed an older version accidently (I flashed 1.3 instead of 1.7)
Now my phone doesn't boot, it gets to the loading screen where it displays model etc and then stops. I can boot into recovery, I was thinking I can just flash the other kernal but I don't have it on my storage.
I wiped cache then davlik cache and then installed the old version and rebooted and now I'm stuck
I'm thinking just wipe data and reflash ROM but I've never messed around with kernals before so I don't know if it's any different
Help is GREATLY appreciated!
If you have an external SD, transfer the updated 1.7rc1 syiah to that, and flash it from recovery.
Should solve the problem.
If it doesnt, wiping and reflashing the rom, then the corect kernel should work as well.

I would start with that.. if any problems occur, then go to wiping.
I would wipe delvic and cache
Update Syiah myself a few times without a wipe. Although I am sure some would recommend a wipe.
I've just put my external SD into its adapter so that my laptop can read it and I get write protection errors.
Can I just wipe data/factory reset and reflash the ROM to gain access to my phone again and then flash the kernal?

Yes if you factory reset and wipe, then install rom, then you can flash the kernel and enjoy all the benefits!:victory:
aaaaand I'm back!
I noticed the little slidy thing on the adaptger and put it the other way and it worked, having that "lock" is pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
I'm all sorted now, I would be useless if it wasn't for the people on this forum
Thank you all so much for the help, whenever stuff like this happens I overact and instantly assume my device is bricked

[Q] AOKP Data Network Problem

hello, im making this thread because after doing a lot of reading, i still didnt find any clues on how to solve my problem.. i apologize in advanced if im bothering everyone with what could posibly be a stupid problem, but ill take the risk since i havent found a way to fix this on my own.
i have a att sgs 2 sgh i777 and i was using Shostock 2 rom for a while, then i wanned to try a jelly bean rom so i flashed AOKP JB 4.1.2 (last build 12.2.2012) and found out that even tho i have full H+, when i access browser (stock and Opera), play store, or facebook app they dont load, and the weird thing is that i can get notifications (like whatsapp). im guessing it has something to do with modem or APN, but my APN's are fine and nobody else is having problems with the modem that AOKP JB comes with so... i was wondering if anyone could give me some kind of help to solve this.
when im using wifi, everything works, play store, facebook, browser, etc but when i switch to my data network, i can only seem to receive push notifications
hope u guys could help me
You're using att?
Shostock and aokp are very different roms.
Did you full wipe?
Format system also recommend.

When you say fully wiping what do you mean by that? Alot of people are not doing it right and this leads to issues. Modems are on a personal level of try a few and see. Do some research on logcats. Logcat is Android troubleshooting 101. Please make sure you understand what your doing before you do it. Messing around without understanding could lead you to a paper weight.
When wiping make sure to format system and data, then do a factory reset and then a cache wipe then install rom.
Are you restoring anything?

[Q] Laggy i717 JB - Fix or ROM?

I tried CM a while back (WAY back, actually - pre-ICS) for the i717. It wasn't bad but after a while I went back to stock because for me it just 'felt' better. Hard to explain it other than that. In any case, I've been on full stock ever since and was happy with it.
Then Official JB comes out from the carrier and my phone is laggy as all hell and it's gotten to the point of royally pissing me off to the point that I'm considering my options.
My question is this: Do we know the cause of the lag? If so, is it fixable via custom kernel or something similar, or do I need to go to a whole separate ROM to get away from the problem (and are there any in particular that are recommended if that is the case)?

I don't recall, but if I had to venture a guess I'd say probably not. I followed the above thread to the 'slow 4.1.2' and disabled everything I could on that list and did a restart, not sure which one did the trick but now it's nice and speedy.Hoping it stays this quick and isn't just a factor of not a lot built up in memory yet. I'll try a factory reset if it bogs down again.
there could also be some existing apps that continue to run in the background.
you might either go into app manager and force close them and clear their cache individually
OR
maybe reboot phone every day or two. clearing any cache build up. kind of a preventative maintinence thing.
if you ventured new ROM, may I suggest Padawawn.
every phone is a bit different, but I have had the best results ever
4.2.2 ROMs perform better IMO. Good luck
™
i prefer stock as well and was also experiencing lag until i found the right setup for myphone. started out by debloating. then flashed phasekernel_jb.3 and use setcpu or whatever tuner app you prefer and set governor = fantasy/scheduler = sio/min = 384/max = 1728. all phones are different so you may need to try different settings to find what works for yours. i have not had any lag since.
Here is what worked for me. I had the same issue as you and posted it a while back. This also greatly increased my battery life. I suggest that if you are rooted go ahead and wipe the device - in fact do it twice! You will have to reinstall of you your apps but it got rid of all the lag and almost doubled my battery life.

If yes, can I just install the SuperSU zip from TWRP? No need to re-root?

If yes, can I just install the SuperSU zip from TWRP? No need to re-root?

You will have full root. I always wipe both caches, system and data when flashing a new ROM, its actually the preferred way.

Wait, I already have stock AT&T JB and rooted. I just want to fix the lag and not installing a new ROM. Do I really need to wipe system and data? Wouldn't that wipe the whole OS?
I did the factory reset and want to wipe both caches... errr.. what's the button combination to boot to TWRP? I use "Quick Boot" before..

It can be done by pressing at the same time Volume up and Power buttons until the display lights up, which is when you have to release Power button, while at the same time you should keep pressing the Volume Up button.
If you wish to keep your current ROM DON'T wipe system.

When you said "wipe", did you mean factory reset or TWRP wipe?
If TWRP, which one you wipe? I tried checking all selection and it wiped even the OS!

Just the normal wipe -the first one on the selection menu.
