update after root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Probably a sill question but here goes.
I have just rooted my s2 recently but was wondering if that if i update it using kies for the jelly bean update will it remove root. I have not modified it or installed any custom firmware or anything as i wasnt sure as to why i rooted in the first place, in other words i woild be happy to unroot it.
Thanks in advance.

Search for the answer. It's pretty fun to do. And next time post your question in the Q&A-section (not this one, as it's already discussed too many times).

You cant update via kies with a rooted phone..kies wont recognize your device...you will have to flash the original firmware via odin/mobile odin to remove root..then you can update via kies.or you can download the latest firmware from sammobile and flash it through mobile odin...which will give you the option of injecting ever root and superuser...hence keeping root.and yes you are asking in the wrong thread

But even in that case SamFIT should show that update is available, rite ?

Hello Mr.impatient
Indian official ICS will be released this week in Kies.So just wait 1-2 more days.
I will not comment about that Indian ICS which is already here in some thread.
Indian official ICS release will not come through OTA.
It will be only through Kies.

I am just a little skeptic about using Odin (scared rather). And now that I'm on 2.3.6, zergRush exploit doesn't work due to which I'm unable to root. Hence waiting for the update through Kies.

I'm on the Ressurection Remix Rom by westcrip. Quite stable and way better than dear old TW thats rolled out with the ICS update from samsung.

Odin is safer than Kies in my opinion.
You can TRY the "memory crash" method when using zergRush. Just open a ton of apps and exit using the Home button instead of Back to fill up as much memory as possible (at least over 500 mb used), then use zergRush.
I don't know if it will work for you or not, but it's worth a shot.
If not, just flash a kernel that roots for you, like CF-Root or Siyah.
How the hell does it matter when you get the update.
Its the same Samsung ****!
Id say stay on GB or use CM9!
But then again thats what i think.

[Q] Official ICS Update Removes Root?

I just used Kies to update my Samsung Galaxy S2 I777 from 2.3.6 to 4.0..3 ICS that just came out. I was previous rooted and now the root seems to be gone. How do i fix this and root my phone again while its 4.03?
Does the super 1 click root work on the official 4.0.3 version?
I would appreciate any help/directions on how to reroot my phone after i updated to the official ICS from AT&T. Thank you!
You can not root the official update

So I'm stuck with this forever or will there be a fix for this in the near future?
Btw was it normal for my root to be removed by updating my phone using kies? Because when i updated previously from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 OTA using my phone's software update option, it didn't remove the root. I was surprised to see that ICS did
Also, what do you guys think about using this method to root my official version of ICS 4.03 on my S2: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-ics-on-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
I know most people on here don't like galaxys2root.com but I'm running the unrooted version of ICS from galaxys2root.com and am having no problems.

Yea but i want to root so that i can freeze apps using titanium back, as well use root capabilities such wifi tethering and root explorer. So i need to root soon. What is the best/safest way to do this on the official ICS 4.03 version?
Well I don't know why his rooted version would be good as well...have you read the comments on his tutorial in the link you posted? Probably will give you a good idea of how it's going for other people.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
It seems to be working for some people but I honestly don't want to have to root using a I9100 version/kernel to have a root. I was hoping that there was an similar root to the super 1 click root method where you can keep your phone on the i777 version.
Also some of the comments say that they are having issues with certain buttons, and on the youtube video one comment says something about getting bricked. So idk
Restore to stock kh7 with root, then flash the official rom in the dev section is the only way I know of at the moment

My humbly tendered suggestion would be that you start reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659
Oh, man...why won't someone spend the time to find this poor guy the info he needs and post the links? It's not his fault he did an update without first knowing what effects it would have on his phone. What a heartless bunch you guys are. It's not like he's been here for over 3 years and knows how this forum works.
Yes you can root the update but trying to flash an update script thru 3e recovery didn't work for me and will format your sd card when you exit 3e but I was rooted within 10 minutes after upgrading to att official ICS. Just to be sure I downloaded/installed Superuser and busybox, then I flashed the CWM recovery kernel ( if you don't know ahead of time how this process works please research before attempting it) which won't boot the phone but allows you to use the button combo to get into recovery and then flashed the latest Siyah kernel .zip (or whichever ICS kernel you prefer), which had been strategically placed on my sd card prior to the Kies flash. And voila...root and recovery.

Why not just flash the pre-rooted version?
...and then there's that ! ^ As a matter of convenience that works too...but personally I like to take what I've learned thru these forums and apply it in real life to retain the process.

Another way to do it, if you have the Odin flashable files, would be to use Mobile Odin with the everroot option checked.

Why so eager to update to JB?
Have you seen the countless complaints from software reviews on the Market about how this and that doesn't work in JB?
Sounds like the developers need more time to iron out bugs to adapt to JB.
Guess it doesn't matter if your phone is just for ****s and giggles, but beware if it's your practical phone.
Many of us have been running JB for months with few or no problems .

Hi delsus.
Kies has been a pain for me so far as when it connects to my phone it won't show the current firmware version and give me the option to upgrade. I wanted to try Odin (I haven't rooted my S3) but I wondered if it would void my warranty in any way if I flashed the official UK unlocked update. Do you have any idea?
Thanks

YOU DON'T NEED ROOT! just to install firmware!
just use Odin and whatever firmware along with the guides on the forum

Reverting from jb 4.2 to ICS before jb theme

Right basically I wanna know if
A its possible not overly fussed about loosing root as I barely use it anyway
B how you do it
Basically CBA to all the updating of custom roms and I prefer the ui before the jelly bean theme came along. So if anyone knows the one I mean where would I get it from too

I'm guessing you want to go back to ICS from JB? That being the case, you have 2 options....
Both require that you download a firmware....which should NOT be 4.0.4....
First option use mobile Odin to flash said firmware
second option is to use PC Odin to flash said firmware.......
And then ignore every request to ota update your phone for as long as you own it....
My wife says I'm a phone geek.....
I'd have to agree......
