Skydragon 1.0 ROM Review - HTC Desire X

EDIT: MaartenXDA has issued an OTA Update that addresses most of the few problems that were mentioned in this review.
EDIT 2: A 1.2 OTA update has now been released that is compatible with the atis112 kernel and addresses some of the bugs that users have reported.
Following on from my short Elegancia review, I thought I'd do a similar review of other ROMs, starting with the SkyDragon ROM.
MaartenXDA has been one of the most prolific developers on the Desire X forums and his Half-Sense ROMs have provided users with a great AOSP experience with many tweaks and mods to boot. Recently he joined the SkyDragon team who, among other things, produce a popular ROM for the One X device. Now MaartenXDA together with the SkyDragon team are bringing the SkyDragon ROM to the Desire X, with the initial release announced today.
The install
Users familiar with the Half-Sense ROM will be right at home with the install process. The boot.img required for the install is actually located within the SkyDragon zip file. Eventually I anticipate MaartenXDA will provide a separate bootinstall.zip as with his Half-Sense ROM with a .bat file that you can execute on a Windows computer to automate the flashing process (Mac/Unix/Linux users can just use ADB & Fastboot commands instead of using the .bat file). You can grab the boot.img file here if you don't want to unzip the skydragon.zip. Once the boot.img is flashed, you enter recovery and flash the zip and this launches the Aroma installer. The installer was simple to use and worked well, with many of the options familar to Half-Sense users. Maarten bundled a few alternative music players, several choices for launchers, a choice of lock screens, and some useful apps such as the Performance Control app, Script Manager, and a few others. I had no crashes or bugs (eg. Aroma apps and options I selected did actually get installed).
Initial boot and setup
The bootup takes a short while with a SkyDragon splash screen to keep you company. After the initial boot you're taken straight to the setup process. The setup process is the familiar HTC routine. There appear to be less things stripped out than some of the other ROMs available. You get, for example, the Tell HTC dialog box as part of the setup process, which I haven't seen since I first bought my DX. Some of the bloatware apps are gone, as are things like ShowMe and the Automotive app. There were no crashes due to missing apks or other oddities.
Look and Feel
Once you're all setup, the UI is stock ROM. You get the SkyDragon wallpapers, but otherwise everything is untouched. This will no doubt change in time as the ROM matures, and MaartenXDA has already put up a link to a theme thread for the ROM. The system as a whole feels very responsive, without any noticeable lag or glitches.

Under the Hood
The Software Information indicates "Skydragon" and the Software Update feature is enabled, though it's not clear whether this is checking HTC's servers or SkyDragon's. The ROM is provided with an OTA utility app to enable future software updates. Running the utility generated an error "Error fetching update info: Invalid ROM (SkyDragonDX) & device (protou) combo!". I suspect that SkyDragon's OTA server is not setup to handle requests from this ROM just yet.
It's still early days. The mods for quick settings and APM are not included in this release, but we should see that offered as a separate flashable package soon.
Root user appears to be working well, managed with ChainsDD's Superuser app. Also the init.d support appears to be working, though oddly busybox wasn't installed (only the directory for toolbox-stericson).
You can also see the various init.d scripts correctly installed under /system/etc/init.d and there are loads of them – the most I've seen so far in a DesireX ROM. Here's a full list of all the init.d tweaks you get with this ROM:
Code:

Sound and Vision
Audio on this ROM is great. Awesome Beats is installed which allows you to fine tune the Beats Audio-enhanced sound. At install time you get to choose various audio players including the Apollo player, Android and the Walkman player. These all sound good without jitter or lag. The Bravia and MPengine patches are applied but I find it hard to tell much difference between Stock and Bravia. Games play just fine and I've noticed no graphic glitches or drawing errors. For some reason, there is no Gallery app installed. So people will need to download an alternative Gallery app from the Play Store.
Final Thoughts
It's always good to have more ROMs and developers working in the Desire X (protou) ecosystem. The SkyDragon ROM promises to be an interesting addition to the pack, offering a lot under the hood in terms of tweaks and refinements. As it's a 1.0 release, it is expected for there to be a few bugs (such as the BusyBox and OTA problems mentioned above), but overall the release is solid. Keep an eye on the SkyDragon Desire X thread for mods and updates over the next few weeks.
Thanks for reading, please let me know if you found this review helpful by hitting the thanks button!

Great review!

This is exactly what I needed.
As you stated before, it's an initial release so I expected it to have some bugs.
The OTA is setup in the ROM itself, but I didn't configure the server yet.
I'll do that as soon as I made another update.
The busybox was an unexpected bug, but I know how to fix that.
Thanks for the great review.

Thanks for the great review.

Great detailed review

Right now you could choose not to install the performance control as the busybox problem still persists. Get another CPU oc app. The ota update also appears not to work on the new kernel. Those using the kernel that is by atis112 v2 the ota update is not advised.

The performance control app does not work after you install the rom then I had to find another and install it. After that I updated v1.1 through ota updater and recovery I got stuck with the red words screen. Note that I am using atis 112's kernel.
UPDATE
I have tried downloading it again but during installation the signature verification failed.

To fix that, use TWRP file manager or AROMA file manager and delete /system/etc/init.d/69force. It will boot. After that the performance control app will work too.

When I do reviews in the future I'm going to setup a standard battery test without using battery saving apps and normal use, etc. Try to be a bit more scientific about it all.

Geek For Me is proud to present:
Fresh Evo 3d 4.2.0
for your Sprint CDMA Evo 3d!
From 4.1.0 to 4.2.0:
Updated to the latest Sprint/HTC OTA (2.17.651.5)
CIQ has been completely removed in this release, including the kernel drivers. 100% CarrierIQ free.
HTC Did leave their own logging system in place (1 apk, 1 binary, 1 lib) so I stripped that out
Disabled GPS icon so that it isn’t visible when GPS is disabled to clean up the taskbar (thanks jschisurf)
Removing dancing droid in phone as there were a large number of complaints of slow downs and other issues
All the usual fresh goodies were re-done for the new OTA. A non-all-inclusive list:
deodex
zipalign
pngopt
7-in-1 reboot menu
usb debugging icon disabled
flattened rosie widgets / rosie super scroll
camera modifications to add extra features
sms/mms modifications to add extra features
disabled pagination in rosie
battery % in taskbar
unlocked sprint hotspot
bottom led panel dimmed
additional quick settings
gtalk v1.3 with voice and video chat
Other stuff. See change log for full list of changes in fresh and for links to credit for any mods that were original ported from elsewhere

Why am I getting FC’s on gmail/market/voice search/whatever?
FC’s can be a common issue when /system/app contains an app that you already have on /data/app. So if you get a FC on gmail, the market, or something similar, then it can generally be fixed 99.99% of the time by either wiping that particular apps data (Settings < Manage Applications < All < YOUR APP < Clear Data), or going in and uninstalling it which will actually force it to use the one /system/app.
Or, of course, can be fixed 100% of the time by doing a full data wipe before installing! I have verified this rom as 100% FC free (at boot at least) so if you have issues, it’s your particular setup.
Why do I get invalid signature when flashing?
This zip is signed the same as I’ve signed every other rom for the last 2.5 years but was getting invalid signature from TWRC 1.1.1. So make sure signature checking is disabled. You can compare the md5 below to make sure your download is good though.
Is this Ice Cream Sandwich? It says it’s version 4.x?
No. This is version 4.x of Fresh Rom. The Android version is always in my change log and unless it’s tagged as a dev rom, will always be the newest official OTA, or possibly a beta tag for a leaked OTA.
How do I setup V6 SuperCharger?
http://link.geekfor.me/v6supercharger
How do I remove Carrier IQ / CIQ?
http://link.geekfor.me/carrieriq
Every time I reboot I’m getting some “Tell HTC” prompt, how do I stop this?

I always listen to the community as a whole and if enough people want something then I will generally add it to my rom. So feel free to ask. However if it's something that only a few people want then I request that you do it yourself and submit a mod/theme/patch for the others to use!

ATTENTION IF YOU ARE ON HBOOT 1.5: YOU MUST FLASH THE BOOT.IMG MANUALLY THROUGH FASTBOOT OR USING AN APP CALLED FLASH IMAGE GUI PRIOR TO FLASHING THE ROM OR IT WON’T BOOT PROPERLY. I BELIEVE THIS ONLY AFFECTS S-ON USERS, AND IT’S BECAUSE YOU CAN’T FLASH THE BOOT.IMG IN RECOVERY LIKE NORMAL. SO IF YOUR PHONE ISN’T BOOTING, THIS IS WHY!! FLASH THE BOOT.IMG IN FLASH IMAGE GUI FIRST, THEN REBOOT TO RECOVERY AND FLASH THE ROM. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE BOOT.IMG FOR FRESH EVO 3D 4.2.0 RIGHT HERE: http://link.geekfor.me/fresh420bootimg

Add me to the list of people who lost their ROM virginity to Fresh on the Hero. This is awesome. Good stuff flipz, welcome back. It's starting to feel like a Hero section reunion in here now.
Thanks, the Fresh 3d 4.0.3 is running flawlessly.
I did miss the boot screen. Will have this in, in a few.
I've been running it with freeza's freEVO 3D-StockKernel 2.08.651.2-3a.zip: Dual Cores active. 2nd core max frequency 1.2GHz, Up-threshold at 75. Minimum freq at 192MHz. and a modified screen off script.
I may run on the kernel with the 4.0.4, then switch back to dual core.
Just wiped cache and Dalvic then flashed.
Nice to be back on Fresh . ( still works on the Hero -lol)
I was always a fan of Fresh on my OG EVO. I will be downloading and installing this in Boot Manager. Thanks!
woot. that is all
What the help flashing for old times sake also took my flashing virginity back in the day!

Geek For Me is proud to present:
Fresh Evo LTE 5.3.1
for your Sprint CDMA Evo 4g LTE!
Changes from 5.2.1 to 5.3.1:
Updated source to latest 2.13.651.1
This take it from Android 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 and updates it to Sense 4.1.
Re-applied all of the usual tweaks. See below for what those are and for thanks/credit. I’ll add in another special thanks to O.M.J
There are radio updates with this OTA. I recommend installing them. You can get those here. That is not my zip but I tested it and it works as expected.
NOTE: When you first boot this it will have the original button mappings and the “menu” bar will be at the bottom. Make sure you go in to settings > display gestures buttons > recent apps button > and set it to either the 2nd or 3rd one. this will remove the bar and make the recent apps button function as menu and as recent apps. needing to hack the system up to remap the buttons is no longer necessary after this update. you just have to make that change once after it boots.

What version of Android is this, it says 5.x?
This is version 5.x of Fresh Rom. The Android version is always in my change log and unless it’s tagged as a dev rom, will always be the newest official OTA, or possibly a beta tag for a leaked OTA.
What is the difference between /sdcard and /sdcard2?
/sdcard is the internal storage on the phone which is about 10gb and /sdcard2 is your actual sdcard. If you copy the rom.zip to the internal storage then it flashes a whole lot faster. To do that you can copy it over from TWRP (by mounting internal storage) or with your phone booted up select “Media Sync” after plugging in the usb as opposed to “Disk drive.”
Why can’t I flash the radio/firmware images? I get an error or it just doesn’t work.
You MUST be s-off in order to flash them.
Why is the “menu” bar back? How do I get rid of it?
When you first boot this it will have the original button mappings and the “menu” bar will be at the bottom.

I just want to use this spot to thank the community as a whole for the work they’ve done on this phone. Fresh Rom started with the Hero and through the Hero and the Evo it was “every man for himself” type of work. Starting with the Evo 3d and now especially with the Evo LTE, most people out there are sharing how they’ve done their work. This not only helps other people out (such as myself) but makes work much faster to modify new updates as they come out from Sprint/HTC. Thanks to the whole US customs BS and then wirefly taking forever, I got my phone about 2 weeks after a lot of people. This is also the first ICS-based rom I’ve done any work on. So I just wanted to give a sincere thank you to all the other developers out there.

Aroma
Hello, when selecting Jelly Blue for items to keep via Aroma install, I do not appear to have any additional theme elements other than stock. i checked HTC skins and did not see anything there as well. Thanks and your efforts are appreciated.

is isn't a theme. htc had some green leftovers (like call button) with jellyblue you have no green at all
(check battery, it should be blue instead of green)
Then all is well, thanks

glad its working , enjoy
Good ROM. Everything is working except the hotspot. I can change the telephony.db but it would be good if it's baked inside the ROM. Thanks for APM and lower brightness tweaks.
i am getting error after downloading this to my at&t one x+...i get all different kind of error about unfortunately location has stopped and etc....and i don't see anything on my homepage there are no icons or anything just a black screen...anybody know how to fix it..
thanks
Just a few issues/suggesstion
1) Even though flashlight, soundrecorder, polaris office are all in system/app they are not getting installed.
2) All Google apps on first launch prompt for permission access.
Thanks
My installation went through fine. I also got the location stopped message....application stops every time I try to load it . Google apps ask for permission but load all fine after that.
So far so good.

ok now i see after some googling whats the issue there didn't cook for AT&T before so didn't know about the hacks needed for it. i'll search more and include a fix for hotspot,
rom updated, fixed hotspot, fixed location fc, and other cool stuff ( full changelog available on my website), enjoy
First version worked flawlessly on my HOX+, and was coming from another ROM!! I got great benchmark results, even when over 100 apps installed, got over 7300 scores. No issues to report. Coming back for more!!!
Good Job, baad!!
Awesome! So happy to see more ROM options for the AT&T One X+ emerging regularly now. I'll definitely have to test this out. Thank you for your work on this!

Was this part of the last update as well because I don't see any references to either in the changelog unless it's part of "cleaned a bit more the rom"? Just curious. Thanks again.

I am not including the hboot and I do not recomend you update it as of yet either as it will prevent you from reverting to previous ROM versions.
Out of alpha and into Beta, xposed installer and sense5 toolbox included in mods install in aroma. Please do not ask for RUU downloads and don't ask for updates it is likely this will not have any major changes until the RUU is made public. I will keep you posted as progress continues.
Supports xPosed Framework Check it out HERE
I recommend installing the Sense5 Toolbox module as it provides the most comprehensive set of tweaks available

Google Services Framework Fix (step by step instructions)This will fix Play Store issuesMAKE A NAND BACKUP OF YOUR NON WORKING ROM
Code:
STEP 1: Restore a working backup (one you know play store worked on)
STEP 2: Download a windows android file browser (I recommend Android Comander)
STEP 3: Connect your device to your PC, Open the android file browser
STEP 4: Browse to /data/data and locate "com.google.android.gsf"
STEP 5: Copy the folder from STEP 4 to your sdcard (remember this location)
STEP 6: Restore your non working ROM from in recovery, Reboot
STEP 7: using a root explorer (or the windows android browser) locate the folder from STEP 5
STEP 8: Copy the folder from STEP 5 into /data/data make sure you choose to overwrite the folder and files
STEP 9: Reboot (You must reboot first, do not immediately try to open play store)
STEP 10: Once rebooted test Play Store, Google Plus and Hangouts all should work fine.
I realize this seems like a daunting task just to fix the Play Store,
but there is no easier way at this point to accomplish this the Google account MUST exist before restoring this folder
in order for the fix to work.

Everything appears to be working great, though I am still on the new Hboot, so it's more likely to work fine. :silly: I'm running it with the stock kernel, but what are the benefits of an unsecured boot.img?

Insecure boot image lets you use adb remount, and adb push or adb pull etc. to /system and its contents.
also the included boot image has init.d support, sdcard performance tweaks and evitareul_common tweaks. so you will get better performance when streaming large video files or playing music from your /data/media folder
great but 1 bug
Flashed the rom and everything is working, except Google search. Every time I use voice search I get Google search has stopped. Super smooth though. Great work.

MIUI General FAQ
Q: How do I root this?
A: Enable root in the perm manager, which can be found in the security folder.
Q: Why is G-Apps not listed for Download?
A: Too Bloaty, add a Google account and install the play store as an APK, I suggest using Aptoide to find it.
Q: 4G LTE isn't working
A: Load the Phone, dial *#*#4636#*#*, goto Phone information, Set preferred network type to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL).
Q: Help! Phone/SystemUI/Keyboard Isn't working/Is Force Closing!
A: Make sure to do a completely clean wipe, also I'm not sure how well this will work if flashed in CWM.
Q: The Browser looks terrible.
A: Settings -> Advanced -> User agent string -> MiOne (It Renders much better & more naturally!)
Q: My Filesystems won't mount/My PC can't see my device/My phone won't act as a MTP/USB Mounting isn't working!
A: Settings -> Developer Options -> Enable Development / USB Debugging (switch both to on)

I'm source building for the entire Moto device tree, each source build takes about 3-4 hours, so I have roughly 40ish hours of source building for 12 devices to do before this is completed.
Honestly though since this thread got a reply first I'll play favorites and finish this before everything else
Thank you very much !

the thread says "Droid Razr", does this mean there will be only XT912 version? Do you plan releasing a version for umts_spyder (XT910)?

My MIUI releases are international and include every avail language, in 2-3 hours I should be done with MIUI for this device.
I just finished my 'code test' for XT926, and have begun building for this device.**edit: As soon as building for already supported phones are done this is next
To be clear I don't care who is releasing MIUI for this phone, I'm doing this for 'completion' purposes and not to be in competition, It's my goal to fork MIUI to every device I can in bulk atm; I'm fine with people using the CM base I'm building for their own MIUI projects on this device as well, It's not about money or territory just fun
Um, this may be a little off topic but since the other MIUI thread is closed, I dunno where else to ask. I am trying to install the official santajin port of 4.2.7. So I am on clean 4.1.2 en.eu OTA. I factory reset erasing my internal storage. On the 2nd boot, after the android guy, I go into SS. I made a 1G/4G/1G slot 1 in SS, the maximum size. I installed MIUI 4.2.7. I clean cache/davlik. I reboot into system without installing gapps yet. That seems to be as clean as an install as I can think of. After going through the setup phase, I have about 70M/1G free and it goes down fast without doing anything. It's so slow it's basically unusable. I reboot again, same thing. Is this normal? This seems like I shouldn't even think of opening the default MIUI apps, forget installing my own stuff... I tried miuiandroid's version of 4.2.7 and it was the same. Oh BTW my device was asiaretail. What am I doing wrong here? This can't be what everyone is using...
Is this ROM cm based smali ported? Or offical 4.1 based?

I've already build CM10.1 for this device with source edits to accommodate MIUI's gfx and using that source base patched MIUI to it.
I can update this as MiCode updates their builds internally; as of right now the only thing standing in my way is your phones kernel, which is a little different than what I have experience with.
Even if I don't finish MIUI for this phone which may happen depending on how things play out with the kernel, I'll have still finished a suitable CM10.1 base for it that anyone can consider using for MIUI, Lewa, Color OS which would normally have severe GFX issues otherwise.
The XT925, XT926, XT907, XT897, XT897c, MB886, AtrixHD didn't have functional MIUI for a while even though the thread existed on XDA, It's a development site and since I've started this project I'm starting a thread for it, now I can push weekly updates to those devices on a solid CM base.
Truth be told I didn't like some of the posters who frequented one of my device forums and so I ignored the phone completely for uh.. a really long time.
I'm really not above being a dickhead too. Especially when you consider I'm just some guy not someone making a living off of this.
There you go dummy, I included a 'best of' because I know your attention span is real short
Edit: Project update for everyone else, everything beside the kernel is done. If I have to use your stock kernel I'll have to employ other options.
My friend kernel has always been a problem for us. For example we have only kexec kernel option and that didn't allow us to use our full hd camera till 4.4.2. With that I mean it would be maybe easier for u to build the miui with 4.4.2 which has a good functioning kernel with full hd video. But I dunno if it's possible. Just saying
