Phone doesn't sleep - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Finally got the note 2. Loving it so far. Only problem is that the phone refuses to sleep. Checking in battery stats and the phone is always awake and media server is 20% of battery. Any ideas?

Do you have the app betterbatterystats?
It will list wakelocks. We can use that to find the app that is causing the hang

Good luck.

Freeze the Smart Alarm Clock widget. Prevented sleep for me. Also, use CPUSpy to check if it sleeps.

Using bettery battery stats. Shows mediaserver and cubes vs spheres as 2 big offenders.
Will freeze smart alarm clock as well.
Edit: can't find any smart alarm clock. Only 2 clock apps showing with titanium.

I remember it's not named how you would think it's named. Is that widget in your app drawer? The rom I'm on now doesn't have it...

Thanks, I know the forum rules. I also know half the threads in general such as the one on Contacts+ don't belong there.
But how many users actually use the Q&A forum? I've been here longer than Q&A sections exist and believe it to be a useless subforum, because most people don't visit it.

Thanks for the replies.
After further investigation through better battery stats, I found SDM_Partial_wakelock to be dominating my partial wakelocks with 4.5 hours of time of the 5 hours my phone has been off charger. I froze the SDM app. Its apparently some sort of security app. I'm going to research further. I'd post a warning about it in the general section, but it would probably get moved...

Sdm is the app responsible for OTA updates. It's a good idea to have it frozen anyways if you're rooted

I'll talk to Scott about it. It shouldn't be in there if that's what it is.
Edit: I didn't do a data wipe before flashing since the phone was brand new. Might have been left over from Stock ROM, though considering its a system app, it shouldn't have stayed. Interesting.

I found that the Google Location Services will usually cause the phone to never turn off its Wifi. If you go under Settings --> Location services, try unchecking Google Location Services. The other two (vzm and gps) generally do not cause this issue.

Autostarts

Have you ever wondered just what is running in the background, using up all your memory, draining your battery and why/how apps can start themselves back up even after you have stopped them running either through the settings menu or with a task killer............
I did, so I looked into this app and this is what I've figured out so far.
Some apps (Google maps for example, as this is one of the worst culprits I've found so far) have rules built into them which can start the app running in the background whenever a certain parameter is met on your phone, this means that no matter how many times you kill the app it can always find a rule to get going again which is another reason you shouldn't use a task killer as they create an endless cycle app starts task killer kills it app starts again task killer kil........ you get the picture? Which often ends up using more resources which our wildfires are seriously lacking.
Some of the rules are ridiculous too such as Google maps can start itself simply by you plugging in the phones charger.
Well anyway back to the point, this app https://market.android.com/details?id=com.elsdoerfer.android.autostarts&hl=en autostarts can disable those rules (needs root access) and the best way to use it I feel is like this.
Start the app and wait a minute for it to load, then hit your menu button and choose group by application .
Search through the list and disable the parameters for apps you don't want running in the background.
Be very careful with system apps as some can stuff up the phone.
This app increases the speed of my phone big time and allows me to control what us running and when. I'd say its the best app I've ever bought.

Hi would this effect v6 supercharged script if i used this? this sounds a good app
Not to my knowledge, I'm running v6 too.
All it does is break the rules so an app you don't need in the background can't start until you allow it to by selecting it from the app drawer, then if you close/kill the app when you're done with it it shouldn't start up again by itself.

Thanks for reply. I will get it now. Can i ask a quick question? How do display your setup on each post? do you write it each time or copy paste? Sorry, its just new to commenting here and only been reading the forum for a year, learning lol.
---------- Post added at 06:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:12 PM ----------
sorry, me again could i just ask you what you set Google maps permissions in Autostart? as i can see, Ive turned all off apart from bottom 2. As the permissions seem not needed.
The way I set it up is all or nothing, that way every loophole is closed for apps I don't want running.
You can change your signature by clicking on your username top right, from there I can't remember as I'm not at a PC.
Click around in your profile till you find signature tab or edit signature.

Thanks for help Ive set one up now. I have found a logo picture from Google images of cm7.
I hope i haven't copied anyone's but if i have please pm me and ill change it.
Interesting app, will definitely try soon.
Feck me sideways!!!
Best app ever. Period.
Thanks for telling me about this app.
So all i have 2 do is to cross out apps that run when i "reboot"?
This is the 1st option of autostarts.
Thats all ?
Kind of but if an app doesn't really need to run, look at this picture and read the labels,
For example Google maps can start itself by plugging in your charger or installing a new app.

So to me the best way to deal with it would be to cancel everything then it will only start when i want it to and if you close it properly it won't hang about in the background.

Your Battery Life Tweaks

Sure would be nice to hear some of the tricks people use for saving battery life. I see plenty of screen shots showing off your battery life, not many tell how.
Please don't bash me for what I have frozen. Phone works fine for me. YMMV. You will notice that I have pretty much nothing ever syncing, that is fine with me. I am always looking for more to freeze...

3 AnTuTu's run to check if that crashes it. AnTuTu is not a good way to check for stability though, I highly recommend using your Internet browser and loading websites with your agent set to Desktop. Try scrolling while the page is still loading, and try a cluttered website filled with posts like: http://gosugamers.net/general/. Also be sure to see if your phone can wake up out of sleep!

On average I lose 1% battery a hour with screen off. In good wifi/cell reception that is.
What do you folks do?
advance task manager works great, set it up to kill all apps at screen lock
1% an hour sounds about right. I'm not sure you're going to get much better than that. You could check out the battery drainers thread for info on finding wakelocks.

seem to help mine....
Its been discussed a number of times in various battery related threads. The issue is that you end up killing a lot of tasks the phone needs, so it has to restart them all the time, which is less efficient than leaving them running. If you have a rogue app draining your battery becuase it isn't shutting down there are better ways to deal with it.
Is this 1% an hour drain with the radio on or off? Ill have to check what mine gets with it on, but when i turn my radio off i get 1% drain every 4 or 5 hours

None can optimize a battery they are self optimizing .
If BBS shows nothing then your phone is broken or you have not installed correctly or read the BBS FAQS and Guide .

Why don't you use the search function or even google? 'You create a thread for that? Heard about the rule number one? Read, read and read again. And what should you read? The results of what you searched for.
Please, any Mod to close this thread?
First of all, you need to read (if possible: with understanding) where to post Questions and Answers.
Possibly would be surprised, but... in Q&A section...
Disable Google now, use titanium backup to make a widget of freezing and defrosting Google Maps, manually refresh weather updates, siyah kernel and some undervolt tweaks, disable Google ads, other Google data analytics of apps, in wifi settings set the wifi to be timeout when phone is not used, if you use viber then go to settings and change the wifi sleep policy.
I did pretty much all of them and get 15 hours standby and 5 hours screen time, but there are still ridiculous system wake locks I can't get rid off. I am using cm10 but stock seems a bit better with battery life.

[Q] Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 batter drain due to google services!!!

Hi
I have a Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 running on WanamLite XXELKC V5.1.
I just put this new ROM in recently. But now I notice that my battery is getting drained faster than before. The stock battery stats shows that google services is the major contributor.
Any ideas ?
try to disable google now's features.. just open google now and then his settings..
if you have your s3 rooted, you might just delete/move the apps from /system/app folder to your sdcard,
i moved a lot of apps that were consuming battery and now its better so... just another way

The point is... Before tHis ROM, I was running the stock 4.1. 1, with even Google Now turned on....
So i should be able to do the same with this ROM too right.....
I've tried different roms and all the time the battery drain was due to google now
Turn off WiFi location access as when that's on maps will run in background as well as network location service.
Disable apps that run all the time (facebook, Whatsapp). I use App Quarantine to do this, places a widget where you can click to disable, clock to enable +open.
Reduce auto sync apps and their frequency. I generally only have gmail auto.
Before leaving your phone to sleep for 10+ minutes, kill background processes. Majority of the time my ruining apps is ONLY Android Keyboard, (set CPU if I feel like using profiles).

Hope I helped!

Too bad, but the battery is still so much better than the iphone for length right?
whatsapp consomes closely to no energy.
My Iphone lasted about as long as my S3 with all process tuned (location services off and so on)

All of what you said does make sense....
I don't think that any of my settings have changed after getting the new ROM... So what i am trying to understand is why Google services is suddenly eating up all my battery.....
Anyhow, somewhere someone Suggested to delete all the accounts and add them again..... I tried that and somehow today Google services doesn't seem to be there in the list of battery draining apps......

I'm getting it as well, along with a bunch of people who also posted this problem today on Android Central. To fix it, long press on the notification until "app info" pops up. Go into app info, force stop it, and then clear data.
Alternatively, find the app called "downloads" in your app drawer, open it, press the "other downloads" button on the right. You should see the Facebook download with an in progress status. Tick the box next to it and then press the little trashcan icon to delete it.
Problem solved.
Edit: Probably best to do both methods, as it came back on me once after just deleting it from downloads app.
Thank you!! I couldn't figure out what it was either! I have Galaxy S3 with CM10.1 on it. How did this problem hit so many devices and so many ROMs at the same time!?
If this doesn't relate to our phone (the i777) it doesn't belong here. As in an app that has nothing to do with our phone. App problems can be discussed in the apps and games section, via pm, or in the MAIN general thread not related to a specific phone model.

Its a strange problem that affects multiple devices, and many had no idea of knowing if it affected one particular device/ROM or not. Relax.
I got it twice today on my Note 2 running a Touchwiz ROM, so it doesn't seem device dependant. FB Playstore error I would assume.

I just read online WHY this is happening: Its because Facebook has pushed an update that will allow future updates to happen OUTSIDE of the Play Store (aka silent updates).
I haven't been able to get the direct update to work so far, but The Verge confirms that it is from FB, so it is safe.
