Will it be possible by using kernel patches in future, is anyone working on it? I'm interested in connecting tablet to internet using Huawei 3G dongles where the wi-fi is out-of-range.

Hi, i'm having a problem with turning on the wireless hotspot using the .35 kernel port from riemervdzee. Anyone got a solution to this, except using apps? The wierless tether apps are using ad hoc network wich does not work with some of the stuff in my network (f.ex. ps3 etc.).
thanks for all your great work on this port riemervdzee! love the progress!
Ok so I have an Acer liquid android 2.3. I bought a Samsung galaxy s media player android 2.2 the other day. I want to connent the samsung to my Acer liquid to use the Acer liquids internet 3g connection when out and about. I'd like to do this ideally with Bluetooth tether. I've searched high and low all day and its doing my head in. Found lots of results for connecting an android tablet in the same way but the menu options are different. My guess is third party software?

Does it have to be Bluetooth? WiFi tethering works exactly the same.
Or wireless but android will not see an adhoc wifi hotspot. And you can only create adhoc networks on android itself

Not true. I do it all the time. To enable it on your tablet, see here: http://androidtablethacks.com/android-tablet-hacks/how-to-enable-adhoc-wifi-on-android-tablets/.
First off, my laptop works fine with my phone's ad-hoc tether, but i want to use internet on my psp and vita later down the road as well when i need it, but i can't find any way to tether my X10 other than in ad-hoc mode, which is not supported by most consoles/handhelds.
i found a few guides but it wouldn't work. Would either not broadcast anything or do ad-hoc mode with various apps.
Any way to tether X10 in infrastructure mode instead of ad-hoc?
Ok, so i tried everything and only phone's native tether (under settings, stock ROM latest updates) gives infrastructure, or at least what seems like it, problem arises when i want to access internet and get DNS server error... there are pretty much no settings to mess with there so i am at a loss really. USB tether gives no internet to my laptop either over the native tether under settings.
wireless tether for root users does however work perfectly, but only in ad-hoc mode. The beta version people use on different phones (change device profile select one of the master methods and go) to get infrastructure instead of ad-hoc doesn't work at all, i haven't tried all profiles but on few i tried even though app says tether is on no devices see it, SSID broadcast set to ON.
So any ideas? Could it be provider nonsense? i bought it second hand and it seems to have been unlocked from Orange, but ROM doesn't seem to have all the bloatware from Orange(just news and traffic pretty much) without that I wouldn't even have noticed that it is from Orange.
Would flashing a different ROM help? could it be Orange's ROM is blocking it? Otherwise i might need a new phone
Android isn't able to detect ad-hoc network. There is a program called "connectify" to make discoverable version of ad-hoc for android devices

I want to tether my ps vita and my laptop to my SE xperia X10. i use tether app on my phone to share phone's internet with my console and laptop when i am not home.
also on my laptop i got intel's my wifi app that allows me to rebeam/share internet which is sufficient for my need on my laptop, though thanks for the tip
problem is making my phone tether in infrastructure and not ad-hoc mode. i gone in as much depth as i can about it in the last post, though if you need any more info i'd be glad to provide it if it would help to find a solution...
It is just a stock Xperia X10 with all official updates and rooted... 2.3.3android 2,1,71baseband.
would using a different rom help?

Well, sorry but I don't know how to do that, but changing ROM won't help

[ROM] Wolfs TW Gingerbread | Feel the difference | V7b6 [stable] | 03/12/2011
^ This rom supports infrastructure mode tethering.
I am in the same boat as you friend but I want a different custom rom. I have upgraded my touchpad to ICS which has no support for ad-hoc networks.
I was using the stock rom above for awhile which supported infrastructure mode which was working perfectly but in my world I want to stick with Miui on my x10.
I updated the wifi teather app on the miui rom to the newest one and was playing with the different setting for different devices. I was able to get the tether app to start in master mode with some of the settings for other devices but I was never able to get the touchpad to fully connect to one of these networks. I had it connect briefly when I put a static ip matching the settings on the wifi tether app but it would not make any internet connection.
If we have the ability in a stock rom, why can't it be ported?
I have my HTC Desire, on which i have a large data bundle which i can use. I created a wifi hotspot from this phone using Barnacle and Wifi Tethering from OpenGarden.
I create the hotspot (tried both apps), and i can see it from my pc, but i cant see it from my SGS3?
Any help?
Give this a bump to see if anybody can help.
Thanks
Final bump, hope somebody knows why the SGS3 cannot pick up wifi hotspots from other phones.
If the other phone makes Ad-Hoc access point the S3 can't access it and so far it's impossible to make S3 use Ad-Hoc.

wow scary
But isn't possible to modify the wpa_supplicant like it has been done for other versions of android ?
I read that the trick was to make the wpa_supplicant "think" the ad-hoc was infrastructure.
Every method so far kills the Wifi connection so you'll have to wait.
Thanks for the feedback. Did not know the SGS3 would not be able to connect to ad hoc wifi hotspots..
Any idea why they went this route?
Because Android by default does not support mesh networks (also called adhoc).
The reason it that wpa_supplicant's adhoc support is badly broken while adhoc networks consist of a complex peer-to-peer protocow withoue central infrastructure: insecurity, slowness and stabiliy issues are the consequences.
Only a few phones have adhoc support in a Rom with, afaik, all these roms being aftermarket
Are you sure your HTC phone is not capable of AP-mode wifi?

My HTC Desire is rooted, so i did some googling and found out that wifi tether can be used and will simulate an infrastructure hotspot.
Now my SGS3 can see the hotspot, but its not connecting properly. Keeps getting stuck on the message "Obtaining IP address" so i am not sure if thats a problem on the HTC or SGS3 side.
Will do some fiddling today.
Hi All,
I am wondering if anyone can take a look at a keypad (tablet) that runs on Android 6.0. It has no WiFi, just works over POE w\Injector. Wondering if we can WiFi to this Androind build. You can PM me for details.
thanks
Bump.. Anyone interested? The issue is since the tablet is hardwared the apps need WiFi to connect. Not sure why the apps need WiFi, since the tablet is already online, can browse internet, etc. IE; If I launch the Sonos App, it ask me to enable WiFi. It wont connect using the hardware POE connection.
Here is the build info to this device.

@sweethip
PoE is Ethernet and not Wireless ( Wi-Fi ): Your tablet does't support Wi-Fi connection because it hasn't an inbuilt Wi-Fi antenna .
@jwoegerbauer
Thanks for the response.. Yes it does have it built in.. it's just disabled or removed from the latest build.
I am asking to see if someone can take a look and see if they can re-enable it since I am not familiar with android devolpment.
Is that a limit on android apps not working over Ethernet ? Don't get why the apps won't work even though it's connected online.
