I can't seem to find any information regarding this subject so I thought I would ask here, hopefully one of you developers out there will know what I am talking about.
Previous blackberry, iphone, and windows mobile devices all had an option to be used as a bluetooth serial extension. It showed up as a bluetooth serial modem / fax modem connection.
So you could use any terminal software with it, such as windows fax, etc...
I know that the cellular modem profile has had built in modem capabilities right from the start but I have been unable to find any information as to which android devices have the fax / serial port profiles working and ready to use without major modification of the underlying operating system.
I am not trying to get internet access such as wifi hotspot, etc... I am actually wanting to use the built in ulaw serial connection services so I can use the cellular modem as an actual serial modem, to connect to fax devices, old bbs terminals, old serial modems running switch equipment, etc...
On a black berry and other devices you just enable blue tooth and attach a serial port to it and it only uses regular voice minutes (as it should) for the connection.
So does anyone know how to activate the serial / modem functions of the phone under android and which version / hardware is it currently working on?

Hello all, I have the xv6800, dcd rom 3.3.4 and activesync and internet sharing setup on Windows just fine. However, I have recently gotten a MAC, and I have not been able to get the internet sharing to work via BT or USB. I can understand BT cause I was never able to get it set up on windows either. I don't mind the USB connection, it's alwasy been more stable and a snap to set up with the ROM. However I can't get it working on the MAC. Is there a driver or app that needs to be installed on the mac side? The only think I remember doing on the WIN side is installing the modem driver.
On Mac, I have installed Missing Sync installed and I have been able to attach and sync my winmo phone without issue, so I know I have connection. but I cannot get the internet sharing to work. I checked out the verizon site and they state that they do not make a modem driver for the mac os.
I should also mention that I have winXP set up on the mac thru VMware, but I have been unsuccessful getting this to work the way my original windows laptop is setup. I dont want to set it up that way anyway if I can avoid it.
I am curious if anyone has this working via USB?? I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I couldn't find anything related and certainly not specific to this ROM.

i use BT in OSX... system prefs, bluetooth, setup a connection to the phone(+ button)... hit the bluetooth icon on the menubar, select the phone -> connect to network, thats all i have to do.

then just use internet sharing form the phone as normal?
no offense but that didnt help at all. I can connect my phone via BT themac sees it, but all I can do is browse device. I need to set up a connection with my phone to the mac and get online via my phone. I dont careif its bluetooth or not. I have the new macbook btw, if it matters
goon55: Like you, I always used a VM workaround to tether back when I had a Mac. I haven't tried this, but I've heard Syncmate allows Internet Sharing on Mac systems. Good luck!
I have no issues connecting my macbook for my 6800.
After you set it up like the other poster told you to, you should have a phone icon next to the bluetooth icon at the top right of the screen. click the phone icon then "connect bluetooth".

also when setting up the BT relationship, make sure you select the network services (i believe, there are one or two services you can check)...on the phone make sure you start BT and internet sharing (with BT selected) and when you go to the BT menu on the mac, your phone name should be under "devices", expand your phone name and select connect to network.
just trying to clarify a bit.
i had it
i had bt working for a bit and then was disconnected abruptly.
after deleting the profiles of the pairings on both the titan and the mac, it still wont share the connection although the phone will be connected in bt system prefrence pane, (where you select devices).
when it worked, i would select the phone in the device select, and underneath clicking on the gear to a menu option to 'connect to network'
it worked that wayfor 3 mins.
also, when i configure the device, if i set the phone to internet share while the mac is discovering the services, i get two options to select instead of just one:
access the internet
use device as network port.

best software you can use is http://www.wmwifirouter.com/ it works over BT or wifi and uses your phone's regular data access address which means you don't get tethering charges. NOTE I use the free version, and I have tried the tiral and although it does work, my mogul does not seem to like it and has little quirks after I install it (wifi turns on when I reset even if the switch is off, I don't why but its there).
Hi everyone, I've been trying to use my Windows Mobile phone as a modem for the Macbook, but so far I only see people being able to connect via BT. Problem with that for me is that BT drains both my laptop and phone battery quicker, so I'm trying to find a solution to connect via USB instead. Has anyone been able to surf on their Mac using their Windows Mobile phone as a modem via USB cable?
What you want is Mobile Stream USB Modem for Windows. Windows here being Windows Mobile, it works with my Mac.
Once you set it up, your phone is seen as a USB Modem and you dial from the Mac to this port. There is a free trial, take time to test it, read the forums, I had some initial issues to get it work right, but now it is good, I ended up purchasing it.
Tried BT sharing too, but too instable and drops. Tried the WiFi sharing, but eats battery...
Only downside: as you dial the data modem, it will fail if it is already in use (background email checking on your phone...). I have to disconnect the data connection on the phone to be able to dial from the Mac, otherwise it reports Port Busy.

I had the same problem, and tried everything recommended in the thread - no dice. I ended up just installing WMWifiRouter and that works like a champ.

I've been looking for a solution as well, and have yet to find one for USB Internet Sharing on a Mac. I currently just use Bluetooth with an external charger on the phone and laptop since it'll eat the battery of both quickly.

I tried several tools (aNetShare, tetherBlu, Wifi tether) but I can't tether my MacBook to my Hero!
Bluetooth: my Mac is telling me, that no additional BT-service is available except the speakers. I.e. no PAN is available.
Wifi: my Mac shows me the Hero as an access point. But connecting to it has no effect, neither on the Hero neither on my MacBook (except the wifi-icon on the mac is changing to a small console, but greyed out).
Of course, I have rooted my Hero and it's working (tried with several tools). Is tethering Hero and MacBook an impossible mission?
Android doesn't support PAN, only HFP and A2DP.
I haven't tried the apps you mention. DO any of them specifically say that they add PAN to the device?
I'm not familiar with this bluetooth stuff, but with other phones, my MacBook tethers over bluetooth with PAN connection. That's why I assumed that type of connection here, too.
No, not possible with Android.
Like i said, the Android OS only supports HFP and A2DP. If those apps do not specifically add the PAN profile to the hero, and i very much doubt that they do, then you're not gonna get anywhere.
If you need to use the phone as a modem with your mac, you're S.O.L with android!
I have messed around trying to tether my Hero with my Mac book air for a couple of weeks and tried pretty much everthing without any sucess. All the wifi tether apps out there dont seem to like macs and bluetooth failed too.
In the end I found a working solution but its not ideal - however it does work.
Installed Pararellls desktop ( Vmware would probably work too if it has good USB support - never tried it)
Installed windows XP as virtual OS
Installed PDAnet for windows ( mac version doesnt exist )
Installed Phone drivers under windows virtual machine
So now I run windows as virtual machine to tether my HTC hero with my Mac, it works well most of the time, unless the connection is dropped then Pdanet cant see the internet connection any more and requires an OS reboot.
I hope this saves some of you guys the time I lost
naaa.. get the modaco custom rom.
the android-wifi-tether app issue is present for macs and pcs, it is actually do to the hero itself and not your computer, you need to get the custom rom (awifiteth comes pre-installed) and that works perfectly on my macbook!
the custom rom adds iptable support and so it now works..
Is it not possible to make an app that injects this code into the official firmware running Hero's ?
Also, I guess the telco's are helping ensure the manufactures disable any possible way to tether as they have no current mechanism to charge for it unless you buy one of their dongles and pay though the nose for another contract

No, the official firmware is "non-rooted," meaning that you and your downloaded apps won't be able to access the Linux system on a read-write basis, which is necessary for tethering apps, as they likely all need to change the iptables to alter the way network routing occurs within the phone.
But possible once someone works out how to root the latest firmware ?
If someone does this, I would pay gladly for the app if it allowed me to use the Hero as a 3G/HSDPA modem.

Theoretically it is possible. As far as I understood you need a TMC receiver, which reads the normal FM signal in and strips the multiplexed traffic data out. What it presents then (via USB) would be just a sequence of serial data which can be read by every navigation application. I am currently trying to retrieve a TMC receiver with USB (and no charger included) and it normally needs just a c0210x kernel object loaded (and some app to tell the system where the serial data needs to be presented to).
This is all theoretical, but IGO or Navigon for example should be able to read /dev/ttyUSBx in Android as well as normal COM ports in Win CE - I think

I am having an issue at office. The wifi router seems to be blocking all Android Devices (i.e administrator has intentionally done it) except for PC & Notebook. For example we have a access point with the name of "ROLEX", if i connect to this access point using my android device then it never works but if i try with my notebook then it connects without any issue. We are facing this issue with almost all android devices.
So is it a way to fool the wifi router that my android device is actually a PC and allows me to connect.

Are you sure the router is specifically blocking android devices? Have you tried connecting an iPhone or just about any other Wifi capable device that's from outside of the office and haven't notified the IT department of? It feels more likely that the IT dept. is simply doing mac address restrictions where only devices with specific mac addressed are allowed to connect to the network.There also could be an inherent compatibility issues between the phones and the router, that there is no actual blocking going on at all.

I did my homework before positing this. Its blocking all the portable devices like Iphone & Android. I also thought it might be a MAC address restrictions but i did spoofed my MAC address of my Android device but still it doesn't seems to be working. I wonder how that Wifi Router is blocking all the portable devices

the only thing I can think of is to find out what make and model router they're using and read the instruction manual/google questions like "blocking mobile devices from network MXHA-281" (MXHA-281 being the model number for example).
Are you manually adding in the SSIDs or are the devices finding the router on their own? If they're finding it on their own and can't connect, not sure what to tell you except to find out if that model router supports such features.

I set up a Samsung S6 edge for Android Auto. Do not have SIM on the phone.
If I connect to App Connect (VW) now, my actual phone will be disconnected and i can no longer make calls via the hands-free system.
The Business telephone interface with SIM is also disconnected.
Now I want to give the S6 the USB ID of the other phone.
Have tried a lot like changing the IMEI or the Android ID. Without success.
Does anyone know what information Discover Pro uses to identify the phone via USB?

AFAIK an USB ID doesn't exist on any Android version.
What you might try to sync is Serial Number of devices in question.
