Hi, I have a Eris rooted and running the newest TazzFroyo. Now, whenever I plug in my headphones or car headphone jack, my phone for one thinks its a headset with mike. Second, it skips/stutters the music, whether it be the default music app or Pandora, constantly! Its completely ruined using the device for music purposes and its quite annoying. I've looked around and seen many a person with the problem, however no solution. Maybe you geniuses at XDA have any input?
It happened once before, however I did a full wipe and flashed a new rom shortly after, and the problem went away. You can understand how I really don't want to wipe and reflash every time this problem appears. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Edit: I think I found it - little widget named headset blocker - keeps android from thinking my headphones/car dock is a headset and forces it toward headphones. Still wondering how to do this without the need to hit a button every time I plug in though.
As far as the music skipping, I've had that happen to me. They say the cause is underclocking it down to 19200. If you have a SetCPU profile set that low, kick it up a little.
I don't know about the first part of your question/problem, but I've read numerous posts about the quality of the cable that you plug into the phone causing the skipping. Mine does it all the time with a certain cable that is in my truck that I use to plug the phone into the aux port on the head unit. It did it before I rooted and it did it after I rooted. The ROM makes no difference.
Would this be hard to do? I will pay someone to do this!
Thanks
...Seriously?
Nearly every kernel available for your phone, for the last ~6 months at least, has had audio boost already in it. If you're running the stock kernel, you don't have audio boost
I'm running the CM7 kernel. I'm asking to modify it even further.

Pretty sure it's at the max for clarity/volume without causing undue stress to the speaker. Try one of the other kernels in the section that have the audio boost mod and see if that helps, pretty sure they are the same though.
Last resort, call your doctor.

Yep... increasing it anymore is going to make things distorted as all hell, especially if you're using a bluetooth speakerphone/headset...
We could try cranking it higher, but I'm not sure what the threshold for the built-in speaker is, and I'm not inclined to try and find out through trial and error...
It wouldn't be that hard to do, but the values are already at what has been a safe, established setting for over a year at this point... so why change it?

Didn't even specify in the first post what he wanted. Like bobtentpeg, I assumed the same thing.
Maxing the incall volume isn't comfortable on my ears. It even hurts if I hold it too close. Yeah, try the doctor first or use speakerphone and hold the speaker part against your ear?

pay for a hearing aid instead!! ;p
I probably should've indicated that this is a BT issue...
Basically I'm connected to my car unit via BT using the N1 dock. The media/navigation volume is quite loud but the in-call volume is brutally low. I always raise the volume when in a call but when I end the call I nearly blow my speakers because the media volume is so loud!
Maybe something can be written to include a BT check?
I use the N1 dock for calls and the car headunit for media, works well that way and the volume is fine.
My headunit has separate media/phone source modes as well so I can set them up with different volumes, it's only a fairly cheap Sony unit too.

I'd prefer to use the head unit for both but unfortunately my Clarion CZ500 doesn't have 2 settings.
So, do I still need a hearing aid/visit to the doctor?

I haven't seen this posted about the Note. Does anyone else have a bad hiss when listening to music? Using Google Music and spotify, there is a definite hiss in the background.
I realize the Note's audio chip isn't great but I wasn't expecting this. Coming from the Captivate, this is really annoying me at the moment.
I hear it only in headphones
I don't hear it on the speaker or via BT. Haven't used the headphone jack yet.
Right, only on headphones. Quite loud and intrusive. I listen to my good quality in-ears at work for hours every day. I can't believe just how crappy the sound is on this otherwise fantastic device.
Ok, you got me wondering so I put on a decent pair of over-the-ear cans and spent 10 minutes flipping through a half-dozen channels of XM (128 kbps streaming). Then 5 more minutes going through several high-quality MP3s (variable bitrate with a max of 224 kbps).
No hiss, no background noise at all during the soft parts. Cranked the volume up to max, no distortion. Very happy with the results - much better than my last phone, the onboard sound on that sucked.
I'm on the stock rom, are you using something else?
For mere there's some noise when I'm not listening to anything, but I only hear it on my headphones.
In car Hiss
have not noticed it with headphones...but.....While using the car dock, any pause in the music whether it be on Pandora, Google Music, or just no app selected, There is a really annoying hiss/feedback through the speakers in the car. This is using the audio output connected to my stereo's AUX input.
It's just like a bad ground "whine" on a stereo...speeds up and down with the car. Never did this before with any other phone/device, so I know it's the note or the dock. I have not tried connected directly to the headphone jack on the note, I'll have to try that out.
Yeah the skyrocket did that too. I have a video up on you tube of it.

As stock as can be here. The hiss is most apparent at the beginning of the track when it starts playing but no music yet. As soon as the track starts playing, you can here it click on with the hiss.
Did I get a defective one?
I'm using a very good pair of in-ears (UE700s). I'll try to dig up some cans later to try it. Maybe directing sound directly onto the ear drums via in-ears picks up the hiss better (less natural filtering?).
Another thought: is there an internal amp volume/gain? Listening to the in-ears, it seems the media volume is very loud even at low settings and amps up quickly with each keypress. Maybe there is another sound tweak I can make somewhere.

A common problem if you are also charging - you are setting up a ground loop. You can add a ground loop isolator on the audio cable (big and clunky), unplug the power, or unplug the audio (and use BT in its place).

While I'm not a die-hard audiophile (I won't spend 10K on a sound system) I do consider myself to be pretty selective. Partly why I ripped my CD collection @ 224 and not something lower - I did lots of tests beforehand and still could hear subtle differences @ 192. Also why I rarely buy 128 kbps mp3s. Anyway, for better or for worse I just don't hear anything negative so maybe yours is defective. I will bust out some in-ear buds tonight and take another listen.

Often media players will have a separate volume from the phone's "media volume". Then there are separate "media volume" settings for BT and the jack. Then don't forget internal volume on BT headphones. It can take some fiddling to find the best combination.

I had the same thing with all my devices. Its just bad ground. That cable will get you set straight.
I never listened to my note with headphones, just with my car stereo with that cable. I hear absolutely no hissing or whining noise, just absolute beautiful sound and bass. This phone is mounds better than the Captivate.
Well, I retried some EQ/volume apps that I might has used recently to make sure there isn't any overboost feature enabled but nothing I can do to solve my problem. argh...
I never tried headphones in my Note with the stock sound equalizer. I had already installed the Beats by Dre mod in the developer's forum.
Zero hum whatsoever, and my happy hardcore sounds amazing.
I too have hiss from the headphone jack. I just returned my first Note yesterday hoping that the hiss would go away. It did not. I use mine in the car with an adapter that hooks directly to the back of my radio (JVC proprietary style).

Huh... I was about to return mine today but maybe it might be fruitless? Or maybe there is a large quantity with hiss and others without?
For those with no hiss, do you find the volume to be very loud? What I'm talking about is even at low settings, just 2-3 notches above silent, the volume is already pretty loud. My phone feels like the internal "gain" was set too high.
I know on my captivate, I could set the media volume to about 40% and still be comfortable. On my Note, it's about 20-30% if that.
Does volume of the note sounds real low to you compared to smaller phones???

No, it is TOO LOUD. just a couple notches above zero and some music is already getting too loud. This is with headphones not internal speaker.
I just got back from swapping my phone from the AT&T store. Both models (black/white) on display had the hiss. I decided to go ahead and swap and maybe a new shipment had an updated phone. NOPE, the hiss is still there.
I've used 3 different in-ears (couldn't find any over the ear cans) and also tested on a captivate and galaxy tab 10.1. It's the Note that is doing the hissing and very noticeable even at low volumes. Easiest to hear is right when you track begins but before the music starts.
I think this might be a deal breaker for me. I love this thing though. Especially irritating with spotify between tracks.
music end -> hiss -> soundless gap -> hiss 0> music starts
Anyone know of an app (probably one that requires root) that can adjust the internal gain like what voodoo sound did?
This older thread I just found (post #5) seems to describe my problem as well.

In order to quantify if this is hardware or not, try doing a factory reset (since you've returned your phone it shouldnt be that big of a deal).
Then, using the stock player on the phone (feel free to update Google Music or any other apps that came with the phone) see if you have the same hiss.
The factory reset is to determine if its possibly an app you installed at some point that is 'boosting' the sound internally without your knowledge. Sound boosting can create signal to noise problems.
Make sure your phone isnt plugged in / charging to anything (not plugged into a PC for example).
And try moving around to different locations, for example, in your house, try going into your front / back yard and see if the problem persists.
You also might try a different set of headphones and see if you have the same issue.
And lastly, if you plug in the headphones and reboot the phone, once the phone is fully booted, check to see if you hear any hiss WITHOUT any apps open?
As a side note, I just tested this (believe it or not, Ive had the Note for 3 weeks now and never plugged in headphones) using Seinnheiser studio HD 600 headphones (very expensive at around $600 for a pair and VERY power efficient) and have no hiss. However, the sound quality isnt all that great but that is a different issue.

Thanks for your helpful tips. Unfortunately, I've tried all that. Factory reset and all. As soon as the phone is ready to go, I listen to some music and hear the hiss immediately. Home or office, no difference. Not plugged in. Different in-ears. 4 different Notes.
I'm using very good in-ears (UE 700s, dual armature) and also decent SuperFi.3s.
Something interesting. Took a listen to a friend's good headphones just now and do not hear any hiss. Even if the media volume cranked up close the max, sounded fine, no hiss and listenably loud. With the in-ears, I can barely get half way up in volume because it becomes too loud.
Anyone here use in-ears? I know most prefer headphones or earbuds.
I'm going to try an inline attenuator tonight to see if that helps (if I can find it!).
What do you mean 'as soon as the phone is ready to go'?
As in, the instant you plug in headphones the hiss is there?
My guess is likely that the in-ear headphones are putting the sound right up to your ear drum and they likely are super sensitive.
The sound chip in the Note is not near to as good as the sound chip in the Captivate.
Im going to do a bit more experimenting with this as the only headphone I have are the seinnheisers and they arent exactly great for portable listening. I have a friend coming over tonight who has some very high quality in-ear headphones and Ill see if I hear anything with those.
Is there a mod that auto changes the volume levels when you plug headphones in? There's been so many times I'd start my music after plugging my headphones in and nearly blow my ears out for forgetting to lower the volume after doing so haha
I'm still rocking the galaxy nexus unfortunately but after scoping everything out and (unfortunately) buying my finace one, I definitely want.
Any-who seems like a reasonable request, I know I have that mod for the Galaxy Nexus [Safe Headset Volume] - Prevent loud volume levels when headset is first plugged in
i 2nd this request! would be very helpful =)
I was thinking a whole headphones plugged in profile would be nice. For instance, I have to keep my phone in vibrate on my desk but when I plug in headphones I would like it to turn the notification sound up so I can hear them through the headphones. Then when I unplug them it goes back to vibrate. Its a pita to change the notification level with your headphones plugged in.

BACKGROUND INFO:
As many of you faithful note users know, as of right now there is a HUGE bug with CM, the OEM cardock and the Galaxy Note (and iirc the S2/S3 as well). The USB audio redirection just flat out doesnt work with CM. Yes, I do know that the headphone jack works. However, in my case that simply doesnt work for a couple reasons: 1) The factory dock 3.5mm audio plug is a 90 degree angle plug head. When plugging in the back it makes the appearance smooth, however this angle causes a problem with the headphone jack placement. If you reroute this plug to your headphone hole it will bind on the actual OEM dock. If you have a dock, you know what I am talking about. You end up with shotty sound quality, possibly mono output, and its just overall sketchy. Not to mention a PITA to do in the dark. 2) My dock is routed all through my dash so for me to get enough slack, I have to basically rip my dash apart. With me taking a 300 mile road trip this week, wanting to use CM10.1 was pretty much out of the question as this issue is pretty much a deal breaker....or WAS!
My Story:
I personally drive an Infinity G35, 2006 model. This car is equipped with "hands free Bluetooth" but not the streaming radio Bluetooth. Basically it's a glorified ear bud that redirects calls only, through my speakers in my car over BT. I thought to myself, "hey lets find an app that would trick my car in to thinking Media output is a phone call". So I searched, and found a few apps that did this. Overall impressions were pretty much sketchy in functionality on the first few I tried. Also, the sound quality at best is comparable to a tin can speaker as alot of these types of apps do MONO redirected output only. After trying a few apps I said eff it and was about to give up. I decided to give it one more market search and give one more of these "Bluetooth apps" a shot. By chance, I found one called SoundAbout. That is the link to the free version on the market. I noticed it had a bluetooth out feature and purchased the paid version to check it out. After jacking with the settings I eventually got frustrated again with the bluetooth out and was close to saying eff it again. Before quitting I realized that from "stock" settings of the app, it would decide on how to redirect the audio all by itself. I said, "ahh why not?" and gave the default config settings a spin. I loaded pandora, slapped the phone in the dock, not really expecting anything "new" or any changes but OMFG IT WORKED! I thought to myself, "Are my ears deceiving me? Do I hear HIGH quality audio through my speakers using my car dock and CM10.1!?" Yes, yes I did.
TLDR:
1) Download this app: SoundAbout
2) Launch app, take default settings to "let app decide" how to route audio for media.
3) Launch Pandora/PlayMusic/Apollo/wtfever poison you got to listen to musics.
4) Profit and possibly dance a jig in your car while sporting CM10.1 and the OEM dock
5) This is optional of course, but I thought it was much necessary as this a life saver for me: Donate to the author of the app- buy his "full version" here, it's a $2.99 well spent(or was for me).
Now the next question is how in the hell do we get this guy in touch with a CM dev to see what the hell he did to FIX THIS ISSUE!!!!???? If he can do it with an app, there has to be a way to natively do it as well, right? But again, this is why I'm downloading the app and not making one/doing commits to CM myself.
OK, working with the dev on the app to possibly help other users. Bad thing is now my original install doesn't work. I'll try to figure out how I got it going and will reply back....

Working with Jellybam & Flapppjaxx 3.0.9 kernel.
Thanks.
I am pretty sure it would work without the dock. Its been correctly routing my audio even while playing and undocking. It routes my calls and notifications smoothly too. Haven't tried headphones yet.
As far as my car goes I run an aux in through my factory head unit. That aux runs to the back of the OEM car dock from Samsung.
First time i ran the app, for some reason I had to manually toggle through some of the media routing settings, manually selecting a few options then select back on "let app decide". After that the app seemed to understand my phones audio routing. The only happened two out of the five times I installed and uninstalled. I was clearing app data and cache and rebooting between each uninstall/ reinstall...

Did you uncheck the "Wired headset microphone" detection button? Only reason I say that is b/c mine was working fine on my road trip back from TX Friday...
I did, but I was on the road at the time, I will give it another go tomorrow.
Just took another trip with a freshly re-installed SoundAbout running on the ROM that must not be named and FJ's 3.0.11 kernel, and Wired Headset Microphone Detection disabled.
Still no joy, sound plays through the audio out of the dock, but Google Now won't hear me.
I cannot say whether the mic will work as a phone, as my Note is primarily a pocketable computer with a phone on the side.
EDIT: Will be driving past Norman in Sept on my road trip from Indiana to Fort Worth.
2nd EDIT: I'm a cheapskate, so will be spending an extra 5 minutes driving 6 miles less to avoid tolls, by driving through Arkansas instead of Oklahoma.

I've got a Galaxy Note running CM10.1.2 and SoundAbout doesn't fix the audio. If I set media to Wired Headphone, it works perfectly but if I choose Dock or Let app decide audio comes through the phone speaker when it's docked.
Any suggestions>
Unlucky
I'm using samsung galaxy s3 gt-i9300 variant, flashed costum rom pa_i9300-3.65-20130707. Audio was not routing to the dock model EDD-D200BE. I tried dock sound redirector but it's not supported. Soundabout saying redirected to dock but is not routing on the dock. And when I am making a calls, it's muted. I am happy with the rom but it's frustrating because a have a plan on purchasing multimedia dock also. Somebody out there??? Please.. Thnx in advance.

I want to add that I am on cyanogenmod 10.2 nightly running android 4.3 the uodate of 20 sep 2013.

You can skip to the TLDR section if you dont want background and "my story".

Is this resolved in CM now? I can't remember if anyone contacted me after this post back in Feb.
