[Q] How to use swapon? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have already tried Siyah and Perseus kernel.
What I'm trying to do is create 2 small swap files one in internal sd and the other on the external sd. (Yes just a small memory bump will do)
On windows I did these:
Code:
fsutil file createnew C:\swap1 128000000
fsutil file createnew C:\swap2 128000000
Copied swap1 to /storage/sdcard0
Copied swap2 to /storage/extSdCard
btw /storage/extSdCard is exFat
then on Terminal Emulator.
Code:
su
mkswap /storage/sdcard0/swap1
mkswap /storage/extSdCard/swap2
swapon /storage/sdcard0/swap1
*This is where I get the error "swapon: /storage/sdcard0/swap1: Invalid argument"
(1) Swapper2 app doesnt work for me.
(2) I don't want to use hardswap or swap partition on my external SD.
*NTFS is unstable with uTorrent using Paragon NTFS/HFS+ (i'm getting corrupted files.)
*exFat is unstable when used with more than one partition like exfat/swap or exfat/swap/ext4. (still getting corrupted files.)
I've also tried using losetup, but when I do this:
Code:
# losetup -f
/dev/loop0
# losetup /dev/loop0 /storage/sdcard0/swap1
losetup: /dev/loop0: No such file or directory
I think the loop module is not loaded in the kernel, how do i load it? and where can i find the module?

IMHO swap on internal eMMC is one of the worst ideas ever. There is however somewhere a thread about how you can make one on SD.

It's the same result I think for both SD and MMC. Using them as swap will shorten its life. But I'm okay with that. I plan to upgrade in the near future anyway.
What I'm not okay with is my poweramp music player pauses from playing flac files (choppy, not from notifications). Contacts/Phone/Messaging being too slow to load. Other apps also reloading too much. Not much of multitasking.
Currently i use zram with Yank's kernel. And believe me the 250mb zram is being consumed well.
The idea was to create 2 small swap files (larger) and setting priorities to them. 1 for the faster internal sd and 2 for external sd. Using swapon -p 1/2 swapfile
Why large files? Lesser rewrites. More sd life.

[Q] how to install 2.3.20 OC on SD running EXT4?

Hey guys, my brain is on overload. I've played with UK0.7, UK1, ardatdat's OC kernel and a number of others but never got the speed I wanted because I was still using FAT.
I'd like to use ardatdat's OC'ed 2.3.20 kernal from my 16gb SDcard with EXT4 format but I can't find clear instructions on how to do this. I can get the Kernel installed but not on the SDcard and not in EXT4. Can someone give me a quick rundown on the steps?
Thanks
OK, I loaded up Ubuntu and was able to get the 3 EXT4 partitions (1gb, 1.9gb, 11+-GB) set via a card reader. I used $auron's guide here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10324687&postcount=89 and now I'm stuck on the part in bold....
su
mkfs.ext4 -O ^huge_file /dev/sdb1
mkfs.ext4 -O ^huge_file /dev/sdb2
mkfs.ext4 -O ^huge_file /dev/sdb3
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb (or some other mountpoint if /mnt/usb does not exist)
cd /mnt/usb
tar -zxf /pathtofile/rootfs.tar.gz
sync
umount /mnt/usb
mounting to usb does not work and because I am not sure what should be doing I don't know how to get around it. I'm not much of a command line or Linux guy so this is tricky for me.
PS: my partitions came up as sdc1/2/3 not sdb1/2/3
yeah I'm stupid, it would help if I created the USB dir first in the mnt folder.
So now that thats done. How do I get the 2.3.20 OC kernel on the sdc1 partition?
Screw it.
The SD card is not performing as well as it should. The R/W speeds do show its faster than the internal (11000/6300 vs 10000/5800) but when I put UK1 on the sd, it runs like crap. everything was smoother on the internal so I'm just going to put the OC'ed 2.3.20 on the internal.
What a waste of a day.
Moved to general.

ext2 support?

Specifically, what do I need to install on my gtab so that it can read an sdcard formatted to ext2?
I've already installed Clockworkmod and Vegan-Tab Ginger. Maybe I need a different kernel too? I know very little about kernels - Are they device specific? Are they interchangeable? Can I change the kernel without wiping my files?
Has anyone ever had success with ext2 on the gtab?

ext2/3/4 are all natively supported by the linux kernel, and issuing a mount command will work if you do it on the command line. However, the automounter program, called vold, likes to have ext4 or VFAT (aka FAT32) filesystems on the SD card. If your ext2 formatted SD card is not automatically mounted, format it again as ext4.
Formatted the sdcard to ext4, but still cannot read anything off it.
As for mounting through the terminal, if I use
fdisk -l
it shows nothing, not even an error. Is there another way to list disks so I know what to mount?
What I'm trying to do is use the Debian installer for Android, but the only version I could find is 2 years old. It's probably based on Lenny or earlier which does not have native ext4 support.

Edit:
If I insert a ext2 formatted sdcard, I get a notice that it is being scanned for errors. It goes away after a minute or so.
If I go to /sdcard2 in Root Explorer, the folder is empty but the stats show a correct 2 gb of used space and the correct amount of free space.
(Also in Root Explorer, if I try to create a test file, it says 'successful' but no file is created.)
If someone here owns a gtab and can access a ext2/4 sdcard, please let me know what setup/Rom you are using. Or if you own an extra sdcard you can format to ext2, and use some other aftermarket ROM/different kernel on your gtab, please test and post your results.
The commands I gave were just examples, you'll have to adjust them to suit your system.

That looks like the correct behaviour. The external SD card is being fsck'd and then automounted.

This, again, is correct, except that on a newly created filesystem, Root Explorer should've shown a lost+found directory.
(Also in Root Explorer, if I try to create a test file, it says 'successful' but no file is created.)

Reformat the filesystem again and try creating a file using the command line:
Code:
$ su
# echo test > /mnt/sdcard2/test.txt
# cat /mnt/sdcard2/test.txt
test
#
My external SD card is formatted as ext3 and I have no problem using Root Explorer. With other file managers, you'll have to be careful because of the standard Unix permissions that come into effect on all extn filesystems. If you want to use file managers other than Root Explorer, just create a new directory on your ext2 filesystem and give that directory a user of "system" and a group of "sdcard_rw", and give (at least) the group "rwx" permissions. Use the user, group and permissions of the /mnt/sdcard directory as a guide:
Code:
$ ls -ld /mnt/sdcard
d---rwxr-x 22 system sdcard_rw 8192 Jan 1 1970 /mnt/sdcard
$ su
# mkdir /mnt/sdcard2/user-dir
# chmod 0775 /mnt/sdcard2/user-dir [I]#or 0075 to exactly match /mnt/sdcard[/I]
# chown system.sdcard_rw /mnt/sdcard2/user-dir
If you don't want to bother with all this, just format the SD card as VFAT, and Android will automatically mount the VFAT filesystem with an owner of "system" and a group of "sdcard_rw". And since (all?) file managers belong to the "sdcard_rw" group, they get automatic read-write permissions to that filesystem. BTW, the Terminal Emulator app also belongs to the "sdcard_rw" group, so you can freely write onto VFAT formatted SD cards on the command line without resorting to the 'su' command (the example above).
Granted, it's been a while since I researched this - but I learned many months ago that the version of VOLD in Froyo does not support anything else but vFAT - so it just won't mount EXT2, or NTFS for that matter.
the mount command would bypass VOLD and we know that NTFS should work, if it's a custom kernel. Conceivably EXT2 should also work, but since it was all manual scripting I just stopped researching it - mainly because I'd still have issues using the card with other devices so it wouldn't really be a portable solution anymore.
As much as I detest FAT32 for its file size limitations, it's still the "standard" between portable devices. The various vendors have yet to figure out a replacement, since they can't seem to agree on anything.

Figures. Never tried ext3, mainly because it's not a readily available option in Ubuntu. Tried to format to ext3 via the terminal but got a weird error, even after unmounting the drive:
"/dev/sdb is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!"
So I booted in to Parted Magic with my netbook, wiped the sdcard, and created a new ext3 partition.
Success!!
The sdcard auto-mounts, and is accessible by Root Explorer, ES File Explorer and File Manager.
Ext3 will suit my purposes just fine. Sorry to make you write all the rest of your post, but it will be a handy reference.
Thank you a million times over!

The ext3 format was the default filesystem of Ubuntu, until just recently. It is generally considered better to use ext2 on a SD card. Since a SD card has a limited number of read/writes, a journaling filesystem like ext3/ext4 would use up the limited number of read/writes faster than using ext2. Also, never create a swap partition on a flash drive or SD card.
To format a SD card in Ubuntu, first determine the device name:
Code:
[email protected]:~$ sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for paul:
Disk /dev/sda: 64.6 GB, 64609058816 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7854 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0000d996
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 3890 31246393+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 3891 7854 31840830 83 Linux
Disk /dev/sdb: 16.4 GB, 16437477376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1998 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000b3366
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 1998 16048903+ 83 Linux
My EEEPC has a 64 GB hard drive, and a 16 GB SDHC card. So the card I want to format is /dev/sdb1. Use fdisk again for the formatting, here are the steps copied directly from my terminal:
Run commands with root privileges (sudo).
Find the disk:
# sudo fdisk -l
Format the disk (sdb1):
# sudo fdisk /dev/sdb1
Command (m for help):d (delete any existing partitions)
Command (m for help):n (create a new partition)
Command action
e extended
p primary partition (1-4)
p
Partition number (1-4):1
Command (m for help):w (to write the changes to the disk)
Format the card. You may need to unmount it first:
# sudo umount /dev/sdb1
# sudo mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdb1

[Q] mount -o bind at boot on stock rom

Hi !
I have an application (CamScanner) with large amount of data (~8Gb). This app doesn't support transfering data do external SD card, so I checked mount -o bind command to bind directory with data stored on external SD to directory in /sdcard and it's working correctly. Question is where I can put this command so that system will run it at boot time after external sd card is ready. There is no /etc/init.d directory on my SGS2 (stock XXKI4). I prefer not to install any applications to perform such a simple task...
Thanks for help, regards !

I think you have no choice, as stock kernels do not have init.d support. You'd need to go down the route of either using an app to run a script on boot, install a kernel with init.d support, or stick with your current method of manually running a script when you need to use the app.
Also, you could try asking the developers kindly to allow saving to external_sd. There's an Email Developer link on the Android market, and a Contact Us link on their website
Thanks for response. I found script named init.rc located in "/", it has several mount commands inside, wonder if it can be used...
Also discovered that app Tasked has ability to run shell scripts with root privileges (at boot or at application start). I suppose I have to put this shell script in /system because in /sdcard owner permissions cannot be set so that file cannot be modified (vfat does not support that) and a security hole would be created...
I think that I'll also ask developer for this feature as You suggest.

Everything in "/" is initramfs, a volatile ramdisk changes to which would be lost
on reboot. Only exception are directories in which actual partitions are mounted,
like /system and /data (you can check which directories with "mount" command).
Have you tried just using symbolic link?
INFO
This may be the best solution, try something like:
Code:
mkdir /sdcard/AppFolder
ln -s /sdcard/AppFolder /data/data/com.your.application.data.folder
Just in case you don't know, you can execute those command using
Terminal Emulator. You were considering modifications to /, so I guess you already have root.
Yes, I have rooted my SGS2 via ZergRush.
I didn't know that / is volatile initramfs, thanks for that information.
As for symbolic link - unfortunately on my stock ROM both /sdcard and /sdcard/external_sd filesystems are vfat and don't support symbolic linking. Only working way I discovered is bind mount.
In my case, I have the following:
mount -o bind /sdcard/external_sd/CamScanner /sdcard/CamScanner
And application runs OK, all data is accessible and doesn't consume internal flash memory.
I'll take a look how hard would be to write some small application to do just this task - define some pairs of source and target directories and mount - bind them at start.
I've somehow missed the fact that you're need redirection from /sdcard
to /sdcard/external_sd, I was thinking about symlink on /data...
Anyways, there another nice trick you can do - if you can devote your SD card
to this one application, then just edit /system/etc/vold.fstab to make SD card
mount in /sdcard/CamScanner instead of /sdcard/external_sd.

[Q] Internal/external sd not mounting [SOLVED]

Hi,
Since my last upgrade of cynaogenmod nighties yesterday on my galaxy s2, my internal AND external sdcard are not mouting anymore
I tried to understand why and I found that my /storage folder was empty. I think it should have been populated by /init.smdk4210.rc script :
Code:
...
on early-init
export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /storage/sdcard0
export SECONDARY_STORAGE /storage/sdcard1
mkdir /storage 0775 system system
mkdir /storage/sdcard0 0775 system system
mkdir /storage/sdcard1 0775 system system
mkdir /storage/usbdisk0 0775 system system
...
I tried to mount /storage/sdcard0, but without success (in fact I am not sure to have the right method).
Extract of /system/etc/vold.fstab
Code:
...
# internal sdcard
dev_mount sdcard0 /storage/sdcard0 11 /devices/platform/dw_mmc/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0 nonremovable,encryptable
...
I thought that
Code:
mount /devices/platform/dw_mmc/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0 /storage/sdcard0
would have been sufficient, but unfortunately not (I tried with /sys/devices/platform/dw_mmc/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0 to).
I would like to retrieve my internal sdcard content.
Thank you in advance,
Bill

I neglected it and thought it'll be fine soon. But it won't. When I opened ES file manager, it showed me SD card unmounted. Then also the same thing happened. While running suddenly shows system ui not responding automatically turns off. Then it doesn't start until I open the battery and insert it again. Hi,
Since my last upgrade of cynaogenmod nighties yesterday on my galaxy s2, my internal AND external sdcard are not mouting anymore
I tried to understand why and I found that my /storage folder was empty. I think it should have been populated by /init.smdk4210.rc script :
Code:
...
on early-init
export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /storage/sdcard0
export SECONDARY_STORAGE /storage/sdcard1
mkdir /storage 0775 system system
mkdir /storage/sdcard0 0775 system system
mkdir /storage/sdcard1 0775 system system
mkdir /storage/usbdisk0 0775 system system
...
I tried to mount /storage/sdcard0, but without success (in fact I am not sure to have the right method).
Extract of /system/etc/vold.fstab
Code:
...
# internal sdcard
dev_mount sdcard0 /storage/sdcard0 11 /devices/platform/dw_mmc/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0 nonremovable,encryptable
...
I thought that
Code:
mount /devices/platform/dw_mmc/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0 /storage/sdcard0
would have been sufficient, but unfortunately not (I tried with /sys/devices/platform/dw_mmc/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0 to).
I would like to retrieve my internal sdcard content.
Thank you in advance,
Bill

i know the problem has been solved but...
i had the same issue. what i did was run the command:
su
echo mkdir /storage/sdcard0 > /data/local/userinit.sh
chmod 700 /data/local/userinit.sh
reboot
but it only takes effect after a reflash of the rom. after reboot for me, it never fixed and would never mount, but after a clean flash of the rom i was using, it seemed to mount fine. so you must reflash, as reboot does not do anything.
Cannot mount internal sd card
I just flashed my honor 4x with flyme Custom ROM
but now my phone doesn't mount my internal sd card
I tried running these commands on shell using ADB, but it doesn't fix the issue
Pleasr help me out here
Thanks
My phone is a BluLifeOne 2015. One day it stopped booting past the logo so I tried to reflash stock with QFIL to no avail. I no longer can access recovery or OS but I can boot into fastboot and boot into TWRP with the command fastboot boot recovery.img. When I try and format the system it says 0mb and can't mount data, cache or system (argument invalid). The internal storage, data, cache and system are all showing as 0mb and I've tried to change file system on all of them but it does not change the size or give me access to the internal storage. I also tried to flash a zip file but same invalid arguments everytime. Can someone help.

[Q] Mount second SD Card partition on boot

Hello, all.
I have a Moto E with a 32GB External Memory card.
I've formatted the card to have a 12G FAT32 partition for the phone to use as intended, and the other 20GB I've formatted into a EXT4 filesystem that I plan to use for various stuff.
I can mount and write to the partition without any problem:
Code:
mount -t ext4 -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /sdcard/sdext4/
The issue lies in that I have no idea where I should place this so that it automatically does it on boot (I cannot find any init.d directory, for example).
Could someone let me know what scripts are read at boot and where the best location for putting said command would be?
----
EDIT: Come to think of it, I'll need it for the following command so I can rsync as well without a hassle:
Code:
ln -s /data/data/eu.kowalczuk.rsync4android/files/rsync rsync
