Hi, just saw the review at gsmarena, it mentions a radio with RDS. So, does our phone have fm radio too? I would be surprised if it doesn't have one!
ps. Have seen similar threads mentioning that it doesn't have one. But, are you sure now?Is it maybe a matter of programming?
There is an "internet radio" app on the phone, but you can't open it.... Probably not the same anyway. Internet is not FM. How about the teardown, did it show the guts for FM? Hardwear should be in place first.
If the DNA had FM radio, it would have come with an FM Radio app...Probably doesn't have it and would be very surprised it the app was released for it in the future. Usually doesn't work like that.

This is not true i had previously a at&t one x and it did have fm radio but no app for this! So i am wondering if the same happens here and we just need a custom rom+app to use fm radio, as butterfly has(at least this is what i read).
If someoene takes the app from butterfly, we might test it in DNA too!

The butterfly has fm radio.
I tried virtuosdna Rom which is based on butterfly firmware on my DNA and it had fm radio app but I couldnot tune into any radio station with it. There was only a hiss sound all the time.Since butterfly n DNA r having same hardware I believe there must be some config missing rather than fmradio chip.

Wireless charging and NFC vary among the models, the DNA doesn't have ipx5 rating, I think the j butterfly has ir, heck they are different sizes.

I'm using viper rom but on my x920e so I had to make several changes to get everything working including using the x920e stock kernel. Radio works fine for me. If I remember correctly, radio functionality is tied to the kernel but I need a dev to confirm that. In either case, on my x920e using Viper Rom with my own custom mods FM radio works perfectly.

This is from an email I sent someone in December, after they sent a debug log from my FM app:
Your log is the 2nd I've seen, and they both show RSSI signal strength jumping between 0 & 111. In the past I've seen a similar, but different RSSI jumping pattern and it seemed to indicate the FM was more forcefully disabled.
It's interesting though that your log shows power on, frequency set etc. succeeding, where there were errors in the 1st log.
The "Broadcom OEM Proprietary FM API" is there and working, more or less, it just seems to be dealing with an FM chip that is somehow disabled. The chip FM antenna receive pin may be grounded or just not connected.
For now at least, I've given up on being able to enable FM on the DNA. I had hoped it was similar to an AT&T HTC OneX LTE that used a Qualcom WCN3660 chip for Bluetooth, WiFi & FM, but it uses a Broadcom chip instead.
It's possible there might be some hope, such as by loading a better FM chip firmware file, but even that slim chance won't do any good on a stock, un-rooted phone.

I was wondering if its possible to get an fm radio wich not uses internet on the rhod100-uk using the 11 pins headset wich i use as antenna for the radio in winmo. I saw that the galaxy s has the same system and cant we just instal that app or something?

Arrgh didn't know anything about a radio so i think only the rhod100 phones have that. I tried FM TwoO from the market but it didn't find the hardware for the fm radio. So i don't thing it's working, because the hardware isn't addressed for android.

If it is doable, this would be very low priority... as in, if the devs are bored with nothing else to do, this might get addressed. However, I'm not aware of any dev with a RHOD100.

I see... looks like the CDMA devices were left out to the pasture with this feature.
Should come eventually, but certainly not high on the list of things to do. Open a bug on the tracker! I don't think there is one for FM radio (but please search to make sure there isn't one.)

Yeah my 210 has radio too. I presumed all rhods did, but maybe not. I do hear that it didn't come unlocked in the stock build or something . . . . .but within a week of buying my rhodium I had a custom rom with fm radio app installed on it.Only works well with htc headfones though, as antenna (and mine are fairly rubbish) so id say for most bluetooth/camera would be of higher priority to get working right

Uh, they don't use the same wireless chipset. They can't as they aren't all GSM
If I understand it correctly, both Sprint's and Verizon's TP2 are actually world phones meaning they have both CDMA and GSM. I suspect the CDMA world versions lack a functioning FM radio because of this extra radio.
I think it's similar to why the Epic 4G is so radically different than the rest of the Galaxy S phones as only Sprint needs WiMAX.
I the Herman/Raphael (Touch Pro) had a similar issue regarding the FM Radio being only enabled on the GSM version and not on the CDMA version. I had a Sprint Touch Pro and there was significant uproar that the FM Radio was not physically enabled on it where it was on the GSM version. Something about it being literally crippled on the hardware end to disable it.

I was talking about the bluetooth, IIRC it's where the radio fm receiver is.
Does motorola razr have radio?
Sure. It has a 3g radio, 4g radio, wifi and Bluetooth radios.
I assume you mean radio as in a streaming music service? The music player has built-in internet radio with many channels available. You can also download Pandora app or various other streaming music apps.

Do you think there's maybe a hardware lockdown or kernel-level lockdown? The Droid 3 FM Radio app worked fine on the Bionic, but hangs on the RAZR.

Nice thing about FM is if a local radio station, less battery drain than the same station streaming.
The Droid 4 apparently has FM, so either its specs are wrong, or there may be a chance, since same chipset as Razr.
Probably the former though.
In every FM thread of 10 posts or more, there's always at least one person who "educates" us about the existence of streaming apps.
And/or tells us we're stuck in the dark ages and that modern music sucks...

I think FM may be the most widespread form of communications on the planet, other than people talking, but it depends how you define it.

So, IMO, plenty of people want "old fashioned over the air" FM. Especially those in less connected and less wealthy parts of the world.
And yes, there are Android phones in those parts of the world. Some are very cheap and offer the usual smartphone capability of an "all in one device", in areas where there are more mobile phones than landlines.

Get Any Cut from Market.
Go to empty desktop
Any Cut -> New Shortcut -> Activity -> FMPlayer -> OK
Exit Any Cut... and click at the FMPlayer... but,no FM radio.
I did the same and its doesnt work unfortunately...

Sometimes it's not about the chip.. I can remember the Motorola Milestone (yup, the original first Milestone) had an FM Radio capable chip, but all the rest of the FM hardware was missing.
Not saying that we surely haven't got the FM Radio on the RAZR, but IF Moto hasn't implemented it, maybe there's a reason that's more than a program.
My N1 has FM radio hw, but stock Android doesn't support it ,in kernel level. But some 3rd party ROMs have the FM support. It is up to Motorola developers to enable it or not in their products.

Yeah, when tornadoes take down areas, and cell data service is not avail... a radio is invaluable.
I've been there and done that and had a phone with a radio, and it was great. I also had my battery charged in the strobe inverter kit, so I was able to charge, too.... was able to idle the tdi and charge many sources with an inverter, too.

I remember a buddy having a phone that could do that a few years back. You'd set the radio to a certain station, then bam music would play through that station. I'm just not sure if that's hardware or software related. An app like that would be cool though.

He is wondering if he would be able to broadcast a short range FM signal so he stream the audio from the phone which could be picked up by the car radio. I have no idea whether or not the myTouch is capable but that sure as hell would be a sick thing to have.

I want to know if its possible to via FM for other reasons other than that mentioned already. What media can be streamed is my question and what volume (not meaning sound) of data transfer can this handle? e.g. would it be possible to stream video to a device say 200m away? I know it would have to be very low wave so the base band would have to be in the lowest frequency range possible.
AND if not, then is it possible with say a paired device. Say a FM transmitter blue toothed to the device to stream content recorded from say the camera to a small TV within range (200m or so)? It would not need to be high def or anything just to be able to recorded-> stream-> view
I bought a FM transmitter from Walgreens for like $20 and it let's me play my music on my phone through my radio and acts like a hands free device when someone calls.

Back before android was even around I used the N Series from nokia. The n73 I believe could do broadcast it just like you are describing.

I get asked this question regularly, and my response is generally: "Forget about it, almost no Android phones connect the FM Transmit pins anywhere useful".
But a few months ago a helpful person sent me an HTC FM transmit app. Apparently it was meant for the T-Mobile/HTC Mytouch 4G, and apparently that device is supposed to have the transmit pins connected.
I have no idea (yet) if that is true. Didn't work on my Desire HD or Desire Z though.
I'm sure this will only work on ROMs that use the Broadcom proprietary Bluetooth stack and that have sufficient parts of Sense present. IE, a stock or stock derived ROM. It probably requires Froyo or GingerBread. (That said, if the hardware is there, it's possible to make it work on any ROM, more or less.)
If anyone has or can load such a ROM and wants to try, and will commit to reporting their results, email me at mikereidis AT gmail.com and I'll send the APK.

No way in heck that app will EVER work on anything but ROMs with the Broadcom proprietary Bluetooth stack. Probably needs Sense too, and other HTC specifics.
I welcome all reports, but reports are almost useless unless you can specify the ROM at least, and if you know about Sense or Broadcom BT on that ROM.
I FINALLY got my myTouch 4g today. Transmit app doesn't work with GB 2.3.4 Software 2.19.531.1 it was shipped with.
EDIT: Confirmed working with stock Froyo 2.2.1.
Not very powerful, and you can hear hiss with antennas right next to each other. RSSI on another phone is 27, while the strongest broadcast station is 57. EDIT: Can get RSSI over 40 by wrapping antennas over their length.
Low performance might be one reason it was canned. I see this in logcat:

I don't know if "+0" is the highest power, or just a "nominal" power level. I'll find out eventually.

MyTouch 4G is a pretty rare phone with FM transmit. The only other confirmed Android devices with transmit are a few Japan market Sharp units.

I tried installing the FM Radio app from my original Dinc, and it installed just fine, opened, showed the radio screen, and then crashed, and won't go any further than that now. Could be because that ROM was de-odexed, but I doubt it.
Have you tried pulling it from the Dinc 2 or Evo 4G Shift? I'm going to try to pull it from a HTC One S ROM if I can find one, since it's so similar to the Dinc 4G.

IC TAZZ rom is a one s rom but a custom rom, it was ported to the inc2
they are all system apps, thats the problem
maybe this phone doesn't have the hardware to run it

Makes me wonder if the hardware is in place to run something like this. It uses your headset as an antenna which would seem like some hardware would need to be implemented and with the phone not having the software as stock just makes me wonder.

There is definitely hardware for FM radio. Whether there is any software that can utilize it is still unknown (at least to me).
I don't have root yet but when I do that's one of my goals - to get the FM tuner working.

Yes, the chip is capable of FM. However, everything else seems to be missing. As noted in this thread I tried several things to get it working and it didn't.

I've had debug logs from two un-rooted users, but nobody has ever sent one from a rooted device, and I'd be interested to see. My sales stats actually show 6 people with this phone, but it seems many people don't even get in touch with me if it doesn't work. I may disable this device in Play and see if anyone notices.
Use Menu-> Test-> Email-> Logs and after 20 seconds or so press Send.
AFAICT, the FM/Bt/WiFi combo chip is the same WCN3660 on the AT&T OneX / OneXL LTE/ OneS / Evo 4G LTE and some new Motorolas.
AFAIK, nobody knows if the FM antenna pin(s) are connected to the wired headset circuitry for use as the FM antenna. If so, then software may be able to enable FM.
BUT, like the new Motorola's (Razr HD, M ?) it appears that the firmware/ROM is not set up to enable FM, perhaps via some config option that Qualcomm provides.

Or, with SU/root we may get lucky and be able to load the radio-iris loadable kernel driver and get it working. Getting it loaded at least is the main thing needed to get further info.

I've had debug logs from two un-rooted users, but nobody has ever sent one from a rooted device, and I'd be interested to see. My sales stats actually show 6 people with this phone, but it seems many people don't even get in touch with me if it doesn't work. I may disable this device in Play and see if anyone notices.
Use Menu-> Test-> Email-> Logs and after 20 seconds or so press Send.
AFAICT, the FM/Bt/WiFi combo chip is the same WCN3660 on the AT&T OneX / OneXL LTE/ OneS / Evo 4G LTE and some new Motorolas.
AFAIK, nobody knows if the FM antenna pin(s) are connected to the wired headset circuitry for use as the FM antenna. If so, then software may be able to enable FM.
BUT, like the new Motorola's (Razr HD, M ?) it appears that the firmware/ROM is not set up to enable FM, perhaps via some config option that Qualcomm provides.

Log sent. No luck on anything working though. There is no sound of static even so I can't tell if it is even trying. I have also tried other FM apps from HTC with no luck. I have no idea how to tell if the antenna pins are connected though I would be happy to try if told how.
Let me know if the logs help.

Thanks ! Nice to finally see with SU.
With SU your radio-iris-transport FM driver is successfully loaded.
Spirit detect and uses the HTC OEM Proprietary FM API. The problem there is that RSSI values are 0 or -128, a bad sign.
But there is still hope with the low level API.
Set Menu-> Settings-> FM API to "Low Level" and restart Spirit.
For audio, the default setting (Auto) of Audio-> Method is translated to "HTC", which is for stock HTC devices. That seems to be getting translated to the proper audio ALSA control settings. But if you lack any audio, setting Audio-> Method to "HTC OneX ALSA" or even "HTC OneX QCom" might help.
On sense there was an FM radio but now that I'm on cm10 I have no radio. Anybody know a good radio app that works with headphones? Thanks

There's a bunch of Internet "radio" apps but TuneIn and Pandora seem to be the most popular and both work with headphones. I'm not sure why any radio/music app wouldn't work with headphones though.

Because your headphones have like an antenna so you can use an analog FM radio. My dads blackberry requires headphones to be plugged in because it uses them as an antenna.

Yes, that's normally true for the built-in FM radio on the Evo 3D, although some ROM's have a mod to let it be used without headphones. If you are looking for an app that's AOSP compatible to use the FM radio in the phone, I've never heard of one. Any substitute that streams over the Internet should work with the internal speaker or headphones.
Edit2: I forgot about Spirit FM Radio. If you read the reviews some people seem to have it working on AOSP ROM's, but I couldn't find any reviews for the Evo 3D and there's no free or trial version. According to this post the Evo 3D should work, but turning on FM on the Evo 3D requires activating bluetooth since both radios are on the same chipset, so it won't work in airplane mode and might not work if the ROM has any bluetooth issues.
Edit2: There does appear to be a free (mono only) version of Spirit FM in this XDA post. I tried it on lens_flare's MIUI ROM (based on Agrabren's CM10 Devil Toast ROM) and it just closes when I try to turn it on.

i have actually tries the spirit app, and its more of a hit and miss depending on rom, sometimes it works but a majority it sadly does not, used it on kanged ports of CM9 before the ics update rolled out

Yea, that's what I thought. It may be partly due to the bluetooth dependency on our phone.

im actually surprised no one has taken the radio apk and dex files and modified them to suit different roms.... or atleast that i know of

Probably for the same reason that hasn't been done for the 3D camera. I believe those programs are heavily dependent on Sense API's that are not published by HTC.
