Before I begin, I've read through a lot of threads on different forums and have yet to find a solution (that's working for me.)
I could never get my device to S-OFF so simply dropped the task. Not in too big of a rush right now. That being said, I'd like to go back to GB for a bit just to try a few things out.
I never flashed the ICS firmware, therefor I've had to use the old firmware patches. So, I tried running the RUU for GB and it only encountered error after error and my phone stayed at the black HTC screen. Any ideas?
Phone works just fine, just rebooted while I was typing this post and went straight into my ROM.
Only way I found is S-off'd, I had to go back to GB after ICS since it came on the phone I bought and needed to return it. Everyone told me I had to S-Off then RUU
If s on make sure you relock bootloader, then you should be able to run the gb ruu for whichever version you were on.

Downgrading radios when s-on could very well hard brick your phone. I strongly recommend that you s-off first.

If you never ran an ics ruu you still were on gb firmware....so you can run a gb ruu. When you run the same ruu that's not downgrading....sheesh :rolleyes . And its probably the easiest way to get back to a working phone if you are lost and don't really know what you are doing.

Tried that. RUU said "Could not update your phone at this time."
I came from stock GB originally in...April. Is there a specific RUU for that?
I've never used RUU's before so I'm lost.
aaand now, I'm pretty sure my phone is a brick. It's re-locked now, can't go into recovery, won't boot into ROM.

Still only a soft brick. Would suggest trying the other of the two GB RUU .exe version packages if you only tried one of them, just a suggestion until someone else can help you and diagnose.

Tried. It's stuck on the "Verifying the information on your PDA Phone...Please wait..." screen.
EDIT: Nevermind, went into Fastboot, working now. Let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help so far.
I'm getting a bootloader version error. An ICS RUU should fix this, right? Granted, I know that means I can't go back until I S-Off, but I'd rather that than have a soft bricked phone
I am in the same boat - S-ON. I flashed Scott's ICS Rooted Stock Rom, along with the GB Patch. I downloaded the PH98IMG.zip and HBOOT doesn't recognize it. Trying the exe may resolve this?
Issue resolved thanks to dsb in the IRC channel. For some reason, I thought I had to throw the unlock.bin on my SD card to unlock.
And to the guy above me, try pushing it through adb. Extract the ROM, find the boot.img, throw it into your ADB directory.
adb reboot bootloader
(make sure you're in fastboot USB)
fastboot flash boot boot.img

With the new leak out, I haven't. However, I can still help.
Make sure there is no P98IMG file on your SD card.
1. Download the mainver fix from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23169557&postcount=4
2. Drop GB ROM of your choice onto SD card.
3. Flash the fix in recovery and reboot into bootloader.
4. Relock your phone by going into adb and typing in fastboot oem lock
5. Run GB RUU of your choice.
6. Use the HTCDev unlock on your bootloader
7. Download a recovery and push it to your phone by typing in fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
8. Boot into recovery, flash ROM, enjoy.
I'm being lazy here. I'm a Motorola guy and screw with my Bionic daily so I offered to help thinking a driod's a driod boy was I wrong! My friend has a Rezound that is stock OS but is rooted, unlocked and S-on. The other day when he got the OTA for ICS it left his phone with a black screen with a red triangle and an exclamation point.
I've scoured google and forums but I just can't wrap my head around this HTC stuff. So I'm being lazy and asking what to do. Can someone tell me in total idiot terms how I can help this guy get his ICS update? We've given up all hope and expect that everything will be lost root, data, and anything else so hit me with the easiest way to flash this update.
TIA

And yeah make sure it is named PH98IMG.zip (make sure it isn't a .zip.zip) and place it on the sd card not in any folders, and then boot into hboot which is power + vol. DOWN.

It can all be done. did it earlier. all is still good.
I just did the same thing. I updated the firmware going back to stock via RUU and accepting the OTA Update, and re-flashing my original Unlock_code.bin. Now running ViperDNA 1.1.2 with the new firmware just fine.
You do know that since u flashed the venom Rom your back to old firmware?

Not entirely. I don't have the Rom portion of the new update, but the radio firmware and other portions of the update are still there (the underlying framework). But yeah, I'm not making full use of it until I use a 2.04-based ROM.

Custom kernels won't work on the update?
Here are the steps I took YMMV
Backup Internal Memory
Verify Fastboot and ADB Drivers are properly installed
Boot into Bootloader
RUN "fastboot OEM Lock"
Phone reboots
Run RUU as Administrator
Wait
Boot Device
Connect to WiFi
Run Software Update from Settings
Wait
Install Update
Checked for Updates Again (Nothing)
Copy Unlock_Code.bin to your fastboot directory
ADB Reboot Bootloader
Open command prompt from fastboot directly
Run "fastboot unlock token Unlock_code.bin"
Follow the prompts
Reboot bootloader verify unlocked
Place Recovery.img in fastboot directory
RUN "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Reboot
Copy over Rooted ROM
Reboot into Recovery and flash
Profit

Sorry for the noobish question, but will I have to go through such a complex procedure as this if I'm on stock rom, unlocked and rooted? Rooting alone the first time was quite time consuming for me :\
I know I could simply stick with what I have now. I'd really like to have the new firmware though, which supposedly fixes audio and wifi issues.

My suggestion then would be to wait and see if someone comes up with a way to flash the radios. That is the only reason I went through the process.
If I have a backup of stock rooted, do I still have to use RUU?
Will do, thanks!
Word of caution people, once you install the OTA update, your HBoot get updated, so the current RUU stops working. Once you apply the update, there's no going back. All custom kernels don't work, I spend all night trying all of them, the phone just stuck at the boot animation.
I would suggest holding out until all the kernels/custom roms/RUUs are updated, cause if anything goes wrong you have very little tools to work with, especially when we don't have S-Off.
That's good to know. Thank you!

I am unfamiliar with sideload but seems like with the correct files and the right person with sideload experience, you should be ok, Someone will step up here, may take a bit.
Its ok its very fixable, at this point. Just be very careful and very patient.
The worst thing you can do with something like this is get in a hurry or try to fix it while you're still very stressed out.
I'm passing on this advice because I almost screwed up yesterday because I made a boo boo and was in a huge hurry.
I'm going to wait for someone who knows more about this particular issue to chime in, but you have my word, I will help you resolve it after I do some more research while I wait for someone with more information or experience to post some info.

Re-Unlock your bootloader with your Unlock token (Unlock_code.bin) then do a fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and use the CWM recovery that is 6.0.2.8 (i believe is the most recent version) and you should be able to sideload your rom ... or if sideloading doesnt work just do an adb push rom.zip /sdcard/rom.zip and that will put the rom that you want to use on the root of the sdcard and then you can flash that there...
This should hopefully get you working again...

I've been trying to root my EVO 4G LTE using various guides from this board, and I'm not having a lot of luck. I have HBOOT 2.09 and it's S-ON. It seems like the easiest way to root the device is to go S-OFF, but then it appears that the device needs to be rooted to get S-OFF. So I'm a little confused at this point. I've unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP, but when I try to install the SuperSU root utility it gives me an error about mounting partitions and fails. My bootloader screen also displays "TAMPERED" which seems to be a problem but I'm not having a lot of luck finding a way to resolve it.
So... can anyone tell me what my next step is?
Thanks in advance.
Are you using Facepalm, Moonshine, or DirtyRacun? You haven't really provided enough details to help, at this point. What's your software version? I assume you're running the stock ROM?
I was running the stock ROM, I think it was 3.16. I tried using Facepalm but again it seems like it needs root to work which I haven't been able to achieve just yet. I tried installing the ROM from this thread through TWRP but it just hangs on the HTC screen so I'm not sure what's on there now. I can still get into the bootloader and recovery though.
You can't use Facepalm on 3.16 software. Use Moonshine.
Try flashing this stock rooted to get back to a working state: http://d-h.st/users/Captain_Throwback/?fld_id=10308#files
You may need to fastboot flash the boot.img to make sure it fully boots.
OK, I downloaded that ROM and extracted the boot.img. I booted the phone into the bootloader and ran "fastboot flash boot boot.img". It seems to have completed correctly, no errors at least, but now the phone just sits at the HTC screen with the red text at the bottom. Clearly I'm doing something wrong...
Did you flash the ROM too? Or did it reboot on you when you tried?
I just did the boot.img. Should I also do "fastboot flash zip 3.16.651.3_stock_rooted_odex_CPTB.zip"?

You have to flash the ROM in recovery.
Ok, so I went into recovery which is still TWRP, adb pushed that ROM to the phone then tried to install it. It gives a bunch of error messages about being unable to mount various items, says it's unable to find path for partition [name of the zip] and fails.
Thanks for your help and patience so far...
You do not extract the file, leave it as a zip and do not open it. Move it to your SD card while in fastboot (mount sd) and from there use twrp and select the correct zip to flash. But above all... DO NOT EXTRACT THE FILR

I don't understand what you're doing here. Boot to recovery, mount storage, copy the ROM zip over, and then flash it.
Ok, so I mounted storage from recovery, or least I tried to, my PC said it needed to be formatted. So I did so, copied the file over and flashed it which completed successfully this time. My phone now boots properly, I'll give Moonshine a try now. Hopefully I won't need to bug you again, thanks for all the help.

I'm having a little trouble with Moonshine. It reboots the phone a couple of times, gets to step 3 then just keeps printing periods in the program window. I've been reading through the Moonshine thread and it seems other people have had the same problem, but I haven't seen a solid fix yet. Anyone know what I need to do or should I stick with the Moonshine thread?
