Is there anyone out there who is willing to point me in the right direction for re purposing my retired Eris (RIP 02-12-13)? Hoping it can be a tool for learning (still in A- shape), instead of a paperweight! I have been doing some reading, but downloading is another story, mostly 404s out there now.
P.S. First post in any forum ever, just a humble android noob searching for knowledge and stable Roms from those who offer, sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place, obviously I have posted at the wrong time! A million thanks in advance to anyone with good news or advice!

Hello, and thank you, I am happy to here some good news. I am obviously new to this, but I love to try out different OSs and remaster them the way I see fit. I have just not taken the plunge with android. Since I have never installed any, it's hard to say witch ones I would like best. I would take any ROMs I could get. I figure I can experiment and learn with my Eris, then re purpose it for my son to play games, take pictures etc.
P.S. I downloaded the Jcase / Eclipse3 one click root. Is this the method you would recommend for getting su privileges? I would love to hear your preference on an easy and up to date rooting method. My Eris is currently bone stock with official 2.1, and up to date according to it.

Yes, if you can find the JCase 1-click root, that will root the phone just fine.
There is another method very well documented here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html (which also walks you through installing for your first custom ROM.)

(So, if you need to flash gapps, you go into Recovery. Wipe data/factory reset. Flash the ROM. Flash google apps. THEN restart the phone.)

Oh, good question. I would avoid it if you can. The Eris will insist that you activate. However, if you follow the prompt to activate and then press the disconnect button as soon as you hear it ring, it will try activation again two more times. If you disconnect after hearing the ring those two times as well, the phone will give up on activation and allow to continue with setup.

Not necessarily. In my experience, xtrSENSE is fastest, but the GB ROMs are just fine. You may not notice the difference. However, xtrSENSE has a method called cache2cache that frees up more storage space or user applications and data. If you install a lot of apps, xtrSENSE may give you more space.
That said, there are disadvantages, including missing out on apps that do not run on android 2.1.
There is something called xtrcache2cache that you can flash on the GB ROMs to give you the same sort of space. I'll try to find a link.w

Not on android 2.1, but the two gingerbread ROMs will update the market to the play store.

The download link there seems to work.
Copy that file (xtrCMCache2cache.zip) to your SD card. This is only for the Gingerbread ROMs - it's not necessary for xtrSENSE.
Restart the phone to recovery. If you have already flashed one of those ROMs, simply flash that xtrCMCache2cache.zip file - do not wipe data or Dalvik cache first. Restart the phone, and you'll have probably about 20-30 MB more free storage space for apps and data.
If you have not already flashed GSB or CondemnedSoul's, do this:
- restart in Recovery
- wipe menu
- wipe data/factory reset
- main menu
- flash a zip file, and choose GSB or Condemned
- flash a zip file, and choose xtrCMCache2cache.zip
- restart the phone

OK, I will read what I have gathered one or two more times before taking the plunge. I am thinking of using the Jcase method, it seems pretty much idiot proof. I have the file and ROMs stored on my PC, and now on a CD as well, just so I don't loose them. If I have this right, I will:
Pre-Steps:
Copy the Jcase one click root file to an empty SD card, install a file explorer app capable of launching it, take a deep breath, here we go Or maybe I have to copy to android filesystem first?
1. Execute Jcase's one click, and after reboot, I should have the Amon Ra recovery. This is simple, but also the most dangerous part? If this were to fail, it would be similar to a bad BIOS flash. This would brick the phone, if I am understanding this correctly.
2. Then Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip now located on SDCard. Going to use a 2 Gb card from my old LG 8350 (phone before Eris).
3. Do Nand backup of semi clean stock OS. By doing so I will loose the stock recovery for good, meaning no more resets to OG clean?
3.5? On second thought, doing one last reset first would remove all user data with my name and credentials. It may be wise to do this, as it will eventually be in the hands of a 5 year old. This would prevent accidental purchases, I think! On the other hand, if I ever break or loose my new phone and need a temp phone, I could keep this image (as is) to use temporarily with Verison until I get a replacement! I can only choose one of these options. I guess the latter is best, and use only a custom ROM for my son to play with. Hopefully I can temporarily disable or somehow limit su before giving it too him.
4. Do Nand backup of original official image, and put somewhere safe, like 2 places + on CD then remove from SD for more available space.
5. Flash one of the 3 downloaded ROMs and also xtrCMCache2cache if desired to desire-c
6. I assume that appstoSD is something I would need to download now, then add after previous steps, if I feel the need!
7. Then its off to test land! I hope I understand this correctly. The one step I have missed is definitely very important. I did not verify the MD5 on Jcase's one click. In fact I don't even remember where I downloaded it from. Truth being told, I have never manually done a MD5 verification! I guess I have one more step that I absolutely need to learn as it is much more important in Android, especially for recovery!
Edit: I have re downloaded the file from here (XDA), did not see a sum to compare it to? I hope the file still is OK!

No, Your regular SD card is fine. You do need to enable third-party app installs; you'll find that setting in settings->applications.

Yes. You must restart the phone as if you wanted to make a phone call. Many people get too eager and try to get into Recovery before full restarting.
I can't believe that flashing Amon_RA is all terribly dangerous. There are ways to recover. In fact, I have not seen anybody report a brick after running the JCase 1-click. I'm sure that it will be fine.

You *could* do the Nand Backup before running rootme.zip. Actually, you only really need to run rootme.zip if you want to do something with root with the stock Android you have now. Some people may, for example, install the application Titanium Backup Pro (which requires root) and batch backup all user apps (menu->batch and choose to run that option from the list) and then, after installing a new custom ROM, reinstall Titanium from the market/play store and then batch restore all missing apps and data. It's a very powerful way to get the phone running all of your apps and data without reinstalling from scratch.
That brings up one more thing: if you decide to install xtrSENSE, you do not need to do a factory reset if you want to keep all of your apps and data. Of course, if you want a fresh start you may, but xtrSENSE will keep all of your apps and data and give you a faster Eris with more room for apps and data.
Also, it *is* possible to get stock recovery back, though not without losing all of you data. There is a ROM called Flashback_21v2 that will bring back stock recovery and an unrooted Eris if you wish. The phone will act as if it was never rooted. That would be a good thing to keep on your phone, just in case. (Though I have to say that I am hosting the location of those files on my website and I have no plans to stop doing so, so they should be around for a while...) You'll probably be fine with the "no radio" version, but if you can spare the space on your computer, (that's a bit of a joke; the files are small), I'd download both.

No, you can do both. Do a Nand Backup of the phone after you root it, which will be stored on the SD card. Wipe data/factory reset and you can installa ROM and then always go back into recover and Nand restore what you backed up originally to get your phone back as it was when you ran the backup. Familiar with Norton Ghost for Windows PCs? That's what Nand backup and restore does - it takes a full snapshot of your phone as it is, and when you restore, it's as if you had just turned off your phone for a long time - it's back to the way it was at the time you made the backup. You can have multiple backups stored - as many as will fit on the SD card.

Well... xtrSENSE support apps2sd as it is, and there are scripts to turn that functionality on. The GB ROMs support using the Android-native moving of apps to sd, so I would avoid apps2sd for them.

HOWEVER, can I suggest instead that you use the 1-click root here, prepared by Scary Alien: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html
If you look at the bottom of the first post, "Scenario 5", there is another version of 1click with a better version of Amon_RA (that allows you to use the hardware keys to navigate recovery, rather than just the trackball; sometimes the trackball doesn't work in the original Amon_RA). That version I guarantee is safe, and Scary Alien has the MD5 right there.

OK, running 1 click directly from from SD card. Third-party apps ticked on before hand, check.
After running 1 click, do normal restart, then shutdown, then go into recovery via vol / end start up.

My Eris already has already has all apps removed, I tried to make it as clean and small as possible. Just looked at the xtrSENSE page and copied some tips, sounds nice and fast, liking that!

I have never used Norton Ghost, but I have used Macrium Reflect, Seagate Disk Wizard, Acronis etc. I get the image/snapshot thing. I plan to store backups in other locations, then copy back to SD if and when needed.
Just did some reading on the xtrSENSE page about aps2sd, guess I will do some more reading about native moving of apps to sd soon.
The MD5 I have matches yours. I downloaded MD5 Calculator and I guess it works.
After reading the page including "Scenario 5" I absolutely agree. I downloaded it, and will use the "scary alien" modded version with the added functionality. Thank you very much for pointing this out. Looks like no change in the simple execution besides the app/file to run, very nice!

Hello guys. I'm new to smartphones and Vibrant is my first. I bought one off ebay for $240 and it has Android version 2.1-update1 installed on it. A ROM is pretty much your OS. All these Froyo ROMs are really good, just know how to flash properly. I STRONGLY suggest you:
1) Consistently backup all your apps with "Titanium Backup" and google, AND make a copy of all your data on your computer.
2) READ, I suggest you read the Bible (it's Stickied at the top) and LEARN before you do ANYTHING.
3) And lastly, when you mess up, as EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE has, you will need to know how to revert back to STOCK firmware.

For some reason Titanium Backup does not work for me. When I run it I get 0 as a number of apps installed and when I click backup all apps and system files it immediately says backup completed. I've been using the Flii Backup. Is that okay? How do I copy all the stuff to my PC? Thank you for all the info.
Also, should I go with the 2.3 Gingerbread version instead?

when you open Titanium Backup, does it say that it has been granted SU permissions?
If it does, then we're good so far. I've had that happen when I first used TiB on my hubby's phone. The way I got over that was to hit the menu button and select "Batch". You should now be on the Batch Backup/Restore - ALL page. From there, I selected RUN for "Backup all user apps + system data". That should force TiB to go ahead and make the backups.
Now, as for copying the files over onto your PC, just use plug in your USB cable and connect it to your PC. Your phone should emit a little tone or vibrate after this (or at least mine does but it's been a long time since I've used stock). From there, slide down your notifications bar (slide your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom of it) and you should see a note telling you that your USB is connected and if you hit that, it will ask you if you would like to mount your SD card (or something similar to that). Select "yes" and your PC will ask you if you want to open these "drives". Select "yes" again and now you will be able to explore the files on your phone the same way you'd do it on your PC.
As for the whole copy+paste thing, the files work the same as if you're copying files around your PC. Generally, I keep multiple backups on my PC, so it might be a smart idea to label your Titanium Backup file with name or date (ie: Titanium Backup - Stock JFD or Titanium Backup - ROMname blahKernel).
Afaik, we don't have a stable Gingerbread ROM yet but I think our devs are getting pretty close. However, we have several stable Froyo ROMs available in the Android Dev section.

Yes. It seems to work now. I've used the Clockwork Recovery app and did backup through it. Would that be enough? Where is the Android Dev section? What do I do next? Thank you.

Welcome! And yes you should definitely update to Froyo, or a rom based on Froyo. I'm not sure what you heard that soured your opinion of Froyo...but it is a noticeable performance upgrade! It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the JIT compiler was introduced with 2.2 (someone fact check me pls) which should improve java performance multiple times.
I recommend Bionix-V 1.21 for a custom ROM made especially for the Vibrant. It's extremely fast and the community is friendly, helpful, and most importantly VERY active. I linked you to a guide that should answer any questions you might have regarding the rom, and android in general.

Yeah, forgot to mention that...but hey if you're gonna try the rom you might as well join their site ;P
Update: Ok, guys. I went to this link and got the Axura 2.3.1.0 installed with the use of this video, which is very useful and I was able to perform this flash flawlessly.
Anyway, The ROM is really responsive and I have only found one flaw, which is that the Fast Web Install app does not work on it. I get the message that they are working on it. Also, the Titanium Backup did not back up anything. All was backed up by the ROM Manager and the Flii Backup.
This ROM has impressed me with its responsiveness. It seems like a high-quality ROM and this is the first time I did the flash, so I'm not familiar with other ROMs. However, this ROM seems like a good pick for now at least. Can you guys advise me where I can sign up for notifications about the Axura updates? Any further suggestions? I appreciate your precious time.
In the Questions and Answers section, at the top, there is a NOOB guide... I would HIGHLY suggest reading it. It explains just about EVERYTHING you could want to do to your new phone!
As far as your next mod... start customizing your phone! Go to the Theme section of the forum and browse around for some custom battery mods and framework mods. It's CRAZY amazing how customizable these phones are!
I used to use the ROM's on here, but since Froyo came out, I'm sticking with a deodexed stock of KB1 (the latest and greatest update). That allows me to modify my framework and all the phone images without having to worry about screwing up one of the custom ROMs out there. I always feel safer with stock... plus root of course. Replaced my boot and shutdown animations with custom ones I created... don't have them posted on here as they are made specifically for my band and noone here would want them!
Keep your contacts synced to google so you don't lose them, backup with Titanium every once in a while to keep your game data and app data up to date, keep reading on here about modding, you could start reading the google developers website to learn about the inner workings of Android and how to write programs... so much to do and so little time in life!!!

Fair warning: I've never rooted a phone before. I've dabbled in ADB with my nook color, but am far from comfortable with it. I installed Honeycomb on the nook color, then decided to just go simple with autonooter.
Now, I'm thinking of rooting my new Thunderbolt. Mostly because I'd like to get rid of all of the bloatware and try to get all of the performance out of my phone as I can get. After having the Droid1 for a couple of years, I do not want to see my phone get laggy like my D1 did.
So here come the beginner questions: once I root the phone, I know I need to get ROM Manager and Titanium Backup. Those apps will let me be able to get back all of my data and preferences, etc once I switch ROMs right?
What else will I need after rooting? Is it a simple process to flash a new ROM?
Can anyone suggest a (mostly) stock ROM that just gets rid of the bloatware and gives the phones performance a boost?
Also, does a rooted phone require a lot of maintenance? For instance, will I have to be updating ROMS often? Also, if an OTA comes out for non-rooted phones, do these updates get worked into the ROMs quickly? I dont want to be without a necessary update, ya know?
Last question: Once I root my phone, should I just cancel the insurance on the phone? Or does "voiding the warranty" only mean that VZW wont fix it for free?

First off, I highly recommend following this rooting method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616 and not using the easy root method. If you have any problems at all, you can log into http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951190 and get some help. I also highly recommend reading up a bit on ADB, what it is and how it works http://www.xda-developers.com/android/adb-easy-tutorial/
Then...once you get rooted use ROM Manager to flash the clockworkmod recovery. In ROM Manager there's a little fix that everyone's been doing: open ROM Manager, menu>clear download cache, then settings>erase recovery. Then do your backup before you do anything else like flashing another ROM. Use Titanium to backup all your apps. I recommend the paid versions of both since you will be using them a lot.
Added: What I usually do the first time: Root, backup rom, install debloated rom, set everything up like I want it and then backup again. Each time I flash a new ROM, I create a backup of it all set up and with the name so that I can easily switch back and forth. I like change

It's easy to flash a new ROM, just download the one you want, put it on your sdcard and then use ROM Manager to 'install from sdcard'
You are going to be flashing ROMs left and right because they come out so fast. Each time an update is out, it'll be put into a ROM and released for all of us here so that you stay current. Most OTA updates will remove your root, so I wouldn't suggest applying them. Many ROMs will block the OTA updates, but not all of them do; at least in my experience.
I would not recommend getting rid of your insurance, it is different than the warranty and you can get your phone replaced if it's ever damaged. I've used it 3 times now all on rooted phones. It indeed will void the warranty.

Why dont you recommend using the easy root method that I've been reading so much about? I realize it has some faults, but I'm planning on waiting until an updated version comes out. I'm a bit afraid to brick my phone while trying to root the phone myself.
Also, after rooting, how can i do a backup of my apps? Doesnt rooting wipe all of the data on my phone?
Learning ADB would be helpful...I must admit, I am an easy root junkie. I just don't have the time to learn ADB. Maybe someday that will change.
Rooting will wipe your phone and I use Titanium Backup to back up my apps. It does make it a lot easier once you start flashing ROMs on a daily basis

And we should stop using the term 'not-easy' root ... how about 'less easy', it's not as scary

When I try to open up the RUU_Mecha zip file, it tells me that the file is invalid or corrupted.
I've downloaded it twice from different sources and this happened both times.
Any idea why this is the case?
Can anyone point me to where I can get a non-corrupt version?

you don't open the files. The exploit one is the one you unpackage to your tools directory. The other you will put on your sdcard when told too. you can join #root and get help if you want.
as far as apps, the market 'should' reload all your apps when you wipe data just give it time. Then use titanium to back them all up.
So ADB is basically finding the root copy and paste and run ? .

ADB is learning what you are doing to your phone instead of letting a program do it for you. Copy/paste is just so there are no typos if you don't feel as comfortable typing it all out. I recommend reading up on ADB so that you have a bit of knowledge of what you are doing.

Titanium backup only works after you're rooted.
You can use a program like Mybackup Pro to backup stuff like sms mms, etc.

As a first time rooter myself, I ended up doing the original root process. The well written instructions helped me not to feel paranoid and I breezed through the steps. While, I was confident in rooting the phone because of the instructions, I don't feel so confident post root because I don't know how to do many of the elements like flash roms, kernels, apply mods, etc. So my question is, are there any guides for flashing new roms and the steps taken before and after? For instance, let's say I wanted to flash adrynalyne's no bloat rom, and his mod package, how do I go about doing it? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

If I root and remove bloatware manually, will OTA updates occur automatically, or do I have the option of blocking them. Would they re-install all of the bloatware I removed?
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for moving apps to my sd card. I'm currently rooted but on the stock 2.1. Have done some searching but haven't had much luck. I'm a newbie and haven't jumped in to the rom realm yet. Guess, I don't want to run the risk of screwing anything up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It would probably be easiest to flash [ROM][GPL][3/15/2011] xtrSENSE5.0.1 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense. It is extremely close to stock but has all the advantages including having Apps2SD built in. You can read zach.xtr's instructions for using Apps2SD under AndroidOS 2.1 in that first post in a section that's titled "Apps2sd and Cache2sd:".

The last version of this I used was v4.6.5, just less than a couple months ago. Before that I had run many versions of it and xtrROM. At the moment I'm using GSB v2.7.
I don't recall any problems with xtrSENSE at all, it's the ROM I recommend the most to people who ask for a recommendation.

I appreciate that. I'll continue to research it and take your recommendation into consideration. Just a little hesitant to roms still but if I want to better my eris, looks like I need to jump the gun a little.
xtrSENSE is a fantastic ROM and I also recommend it to anybody new to rooting, unless they are specific in wanting to get away from Sense at all costs, or needs something like Google Voice Search/Actions (which requires Froyo or better).
I have one issue with xtrSENSE, but it seems to be unique to me: after running the ROM for a while, the phone becomes erratic about reminders for items in my calendar. For example, if I have a meeting at 4:30 pm and have a reminder set to 15 minutes, after running these ROMs (xtrSENSE, xtrROM and stock, actually) for a while, they may or may not sound the reminder at 4:15 pm, as desired. Sometimes they do, often they don't - often, they will fire off at some random time hours later, and even rarely never remind me at all until I restart the phone, and then they all start pouring in.
This was the major reason why I finally rooted a few weeks after 2.1 finally came to the Eris last year.
I have never seen anybody else report this issue with xtrSENSE, though, so I continue to recommend it to others. It's great advantage is that if you have been running stock, it will look and feel just the same, except faster, with better battery life, without the lag that happens with stock as your text message and call log grows.

That's because your Eris runs outside the normal space-time continuum.
So, after looking into both xtrROM and xtrSense, I'm not sure which would be the better idea. I don't have to have sense but both sound like they would be great roms. Also, should I stick with 2.1 or jump higher to 2.2 or even 2.3??

It would probably be best if you just start flashing some of them to see for yourself. Keep in mind that without the Sense home, the phone will feel a little different, plus not be able to use the Sense widgets. Since you already have experience with Sense, flash xtrROM and see how you like it. Then I would personally just skip right over 2.2 and go to 2.3 since it's essentially fully developed now.
I'm personally using GSB (soon to flash v2.8) and Tazz's Gingerbread ROM get's rave reviews, too.
Try a few ROMs and find out what you like best.

As far as backing up your apps and/or their settings, I swore by My Backup Pro for quite a long time but since going to Gingerbread, I've taken advantage of Titanium Backup's ability to restore apps to where they were backed up from (not applicable to the stock ROM), which is handy for me because using Gingerbread's (or Froyo's) native Apps2SD, I have a total of 190 user and system apps.
I don't know if they've added any feature like that in My Backup. If they have, then it would have been very recently.

Personally, I use cyanogen as my rom and nandroid to backup the phone...you know in case the rom fubars the phone.

I went with My Backup Pro and made a copy of my sd card to my laptop. I was trying this technique last night but it had an error at the end of the command prompt.

Somehow, I must have missed that. I haven't flashed anything just yet; I was hoping that would do the trick before I went to flashing a rom. I downloaded the free version of titanium last night but it wouldn't backup, saying that I didn't have busybox. I downloaded busybox afterwards but it had a few warnings right at the beginning that I wasn't sure about so that's why I went with backup pro. I just checked into install manager but it isn't in the market.
With the help you have already given, is there a set of instructions for the nandroid backup process? I'm kinda interested in xtrROM but want to get all my ducks in a row before I flash it. Thanks for the help! Appreciate it!

BusyBox is included with any custom ROM, another reason it's just easier to flash a ROM like xtrSENSE or xtrROM as you mentioned, although with Apps2SD under Android 2.1, you need to backup the entire contents of your SD card, repartition it to include an Ext2 partition and 0 (zero) Swap, and the rest FAT32 as normal. All can be done from Recovery.
What method did you use to root? I'm assuming that whatever method you used installed a custom recovery. To make sure you do have a custom recovery, turn the phone off, press and HOLD the volume up button and press the End button long enough to turn the phone on. Keep holding the volume up button for a few seconds longer. When it goes into recovery if you have Amon RA recovery it should say something like amon-ra-eris-1.6.2 at the bottom.
In Amon RA recovery, reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648025 there are these menu options:

To make a nandroid, just choose the "Backup/Restore" menu with your trackball, then choose "Nand backup".

Install Manager or anything else having to do with Apps2SD won't do you any good without either flashing the Apps2SD script from recovery, or flashing a custom ROM that includes Apps2SD.

im looking for some info working with a droid eris used 1click method to root ive got the 2.2 froshedyo 11 rom the kernel is 2.6.29 DECAFUCTCFS-dirty the person im doing this for really wants the HTC widgets back so im looking and getting a good feel about the xtrsense5.0.1 rom but the only thing im not sure of is wiping sd ext partition is that something i need to do or is that only if im planning on using the app2sd im alil lost about that part and the whole partition process id ask there but not enough posting yet to do so the recovery is the RA-eris-v1.6.2 so there i should b good to go thanks for any and all info out there
My Thunderbolt received an OTA update last week and keeps rebooting. I have ClockworkMod Recovery so the Install fails. I cleared the Cache with CWM and restarted the phone like it suggests in other posts elsewhere. I get a failed update message, I cancel out of it and reboot the phone. I also used Titanium Backup to Freeze "Update" and "Updater", but the phone keeps self booting into the OTA update every day . I searched for an update.zip and cannot find one on the SD card.
Can anyone suggest how to stop the phone from updating/rebooting everyday? I cannot seems to find the answer anywhere.

more than likely you wont have an update.zip but rather an RUU. Remove the RUU from the SD card and see how that works. If I was having this problem I would do a full wipe on the phone backup my full SD card contents and format the SD card and flash a custom rom with CWM. I never understand what the point of rooting is if you are not going to flash a custom rom. Are you afraid? Worried about bricking? I just don't get it. Put the new MIUI on it. You will be pleased.
I installed Liquid ROM 3.1 and it's working like a charm. I was concerned about the 3G/4G compatability problems that most custom ROMS seem to have.
Using Titanium Backup Pro I backed up all my apps then restored them after installing Liquid ROM and re-setup the desktop and all is well.

I was actually broken hearted that I was compelled in install a custom rom to avoid the problems the op has described. Everything "works" in standard rom. When you go custom you get lots of fun new features but you always lose something..... Could be vzw vvm or nfl live or fast gps lock or photo effects in gallery but it seems there is always someting you lose.

I have done 2 factory resets and then I get messages back to work, but after a few days and without any reason I stop receiving them again. I did some research and found that this is a common problem with umi x2 and some people say that I should apply a ROM fix or software update. But I dont know anything about this. I need your help in order to fix this please.

Have you tried just using a different text messaging app to see if it's not just an issue with the built in stock text messaging app? That would be quick and easy to test. If that doesn't work, then yes. an update or rom would be the next step.
Root: Supposedly this phone is already pre-rooted. Depending on where you got it from, it is possible this was disabled. If it does need to be rooted, then it is specific to what firmware and chip you have (I guess there are regular and "Turbo" versions)

Roms: http://www.needrom.com/phone-roms/umi/umi-x2/ - My suggestion would be CM11 due to a much better UI, more privacy / security, and it is highly rated. Recommend reading through comments for more info on what does / does not work.
All of these are very general guidelines to get started with reading. You should get familiar with how to restore to stock as well, in worst case scenarios.

Sorry, but I do not understand this part. I am totally illiterate in this matters, but I am pretty good at following tutorials.
Mine is the 1.5Ghz 2Gb RAM and 32Gb ROM (many call it Turbo, even though there have been other Turbo versions before).

All of these are very general guidelines to get started with reading. You should get familiar with how to restore to stock as well, in worst case scenarios.

So, yea, seems like it should already be rooted. You can check with a root checker app from the Play Store to verify. If it is, then you can install the MobileUncle app and use that to install the CWM recovery which will allow you to backup your current rom as well as completely wipe and install a new one. Make sure you backup whatever you want and save it to a safe place before you start as a precaution. You can never be too careful, but you can certainly not be careful enough.

Why do you think it is rooted. Is that bad or good?
Will I need a micro SD card to do this?
Because I've seen more than 1 post / review from various users stating that it is rooted already. This is excellent if you plan on modifying your phone as part of the work is already finished. Whether or not you need an SD card depends on how much storage you have left on your phone. Probably need at least a GB or 2 for the nandroid backup and then however much room the roms take up. Since you have a 32 GB phone, it's more than likely there is plenty of room left for this stuff. I really suggest reading up on how to use the Flash Tool and the files you need to restore the phone to stock, just in case. I've worked (rooted/customized) on well over a 100 different kinds of android devices, but even so, I rarely ever work on something that I don't have the ability to at least return it to it's original state.

In the beginning of the tutorial it says that. I am completely lost with that step. Is this on the phone or on the pc? Is this through an app?
They're saying you should download the CWM file - if it is zipped, you must unzip and move that file (will be something.img) to your SD card or internal storage. When it says root of card, that just means it should NOT be in a folder.
