It's not a samsung problem, every screen will burn in eventually. The lifetime depends of how you use it.
As a reference, I had my S3 since June 2012 and doesn't have any visible burn (screen time is about 1.5 hours every day).
Uh, there's no such thing called burn-in on OLED displays.

GNex screen is worst AMOLED i've ever used
is has ghosting - burn in - weird colors in low brightness - very low brightness :cyclops:
i just changed screen of my GNex under warranty because of very bad burn in and after month of using the new screen its start to show burn in again :crying:
i've never had such issue's on any other AMOLED devices i've used ( GS1-GS2-GS3-Note2 )

I'll leave the tech stuff to someone more knowledeable, but what I do know is that it's not burn-in. It's a falsely used term for the actual burn-in CRT displays faced.
It is a degradation discrepancy because of asynchronous color degradation. In OLED they use organic material what is the main culprit. The blue OLED pixels degrade about 2-3 times faster than the other colors, which causes the often seen blueish tint in certain areas. OLED degradation is also much worse than current plasma degradation (with plasma it is also not burn-in but degradation).

You should probably stop buying TV's too, I mean because of the alleged "burn-in" and all. Hell, don't buy PC monitors of any kind as well, hell, they "burn-in" as well.

My monitor is on 10h a day and it has no problem with pixel degradation,my old gs2 with 2-3h/day has gone in 11 months ,I don't want to spend 500€ on something that after a while will get burn-in,you cannot compare the lifetime of a lcd panel with an amoled

Well, to be honest, the OLED tech as it is used in current devices is way worse when talking about the burn-in like effects than most other applied techs. With LCD and Plasma (where plasma theoretically has the short end of the stick) the effects are practically non perceptible while with OLED it is a whole other story. The biggest noticeable effect is the blueish tint some parts of the screen can get because of certain bars (like the notification bar) or other long-term used (semi)-static objects.
Though, Samsung has applied some kind of a fix for the notification bar problem, namely making that bar grey in stead of solid black (which helps smooth-en the degradation process). Not many people seem to be aware of the reason and are all changing the bar back to black (AC/DC!!! ) which is not that good of a choice in the AMOLED supplied SGS3's.

Stop *****ing, it will degrade like any screen, yes it won't last you 5 years perfectly, expected lifetime is really 2 years max if you are a manic that uses his phone 10 hours a day with 100% brightness, expect degradation to start in a month that way.
Pretty satified with my screen, about 8 hours of screen on average daily, 70% brightness and still perfect.

After seeing the screen on the samsung galaxy s II i'm pretty confident that its what i'll be getting, but...I'm concerned about burn in.
One of the reasons I was leaning towards the htc sensation is that with slcd I don't have to worry about burn in at all, but how much do i really have to worry about it?
I havn't seen many people complain about burn in on the first galaxy s, but there are still some cases.
Is it reduced on the galaxy s II?
Are the chances of this happening so low that I shouldnt worry about it?
How cheap/easy is it to replace the screen if this happens?

I´m an Omnia 2 I8000 owner since 10.2009. It was the first phone on market with Samsungs Amoled-screen.
I allways use Black themes.
I don´t have any problems with screen burn up to now. You can see it slightly on testimages, but in normal use, you won´t notice it at all! I would post pictures, but my Display was replaced(Dust under the screen) a month ago, so its new again...

Amoled screens are basically plasma screens for phones.
They're completely different technologies, but the pros/cons are almost the same.
lcds make a picture but the backlight is what allows us to see it so clearly.
amoled make their own light, but they have a lifespan.
so the pixels that get the most use tend to fade, and leave a 'burn in' effect.

Burn in happens as early as 4-6 months of use with most AMOLED based screens, this happens mostly on the clock section of the notification bar, there is a long thread about this on the SGS1 forums. Honestly burn in is the least of concerns, be more concerned about the yellow tinting issue on most SAMOLED Plus screens.
Well ive had a samsung jet for some 3-4 years, one of the first amoleds (i think)
and i dont have a hint of burn in, i also got a htc desire after that because i fell in love with amoled and that doesnt have any burn in either. Now i have my sgs2 and the amoled love continues. I have a plasma screen at home so i am very familliar with burn in (nasty shock in the morning when falling asleep with it on!).
I think if samsung thought these were going to burn in they would have put screen protection/pixel flushing just like they did with my samsung plasma tv. Its really not a worry in my mind and i use bright blue glowing themes which are the most aggressive on amoled pixels.
Ive read horror stories of burn in but those are just faulty screens/handsets.

never knew these AMOLED screens have image retention problems.
My Nexus One had terrible screen burn, the Froyo notification bar was clearly visable when not actually displayed. Hope the SGS2 does not go this way.

Yes there is a problem. My nexus one has permanent burn in. And I made a thread with many others posting pics of their burn in.
Its just a trait of amoled screens. My status bar, clock am pm, and keyboard are all burnt in to the screen on my nexus one.

I would assume that the efficiency boost would lessen the effect a bit because it should boost the pixel lifespan, but im not 100%.

Yes that is the question now, we don't know how much amoled plus improves this issue. I have to think that its gonna be much improved with this new generation.
Mine already seems to suffer from burn-in, most noticeable whenever my auto-brightness shifts to lower thresholds (had my SGS2 since the last day of June 2011). I wonder if Sammy can do any replacement for me.
I got a burn in too. The four bottom icons start to be visible with notification bar pulled down.
Looks like I ain't the only one with an sgs2 with this issue then. I notice it's only visible at low brightness - approximately 10-15%. And my notification bar has always been black.

Got mine since it's release in May, always used very low brightness settings and a low screen-off-timer, 30 seconds or one minute.
Status bar is visible on red background and very visible on blue, some icons and the clock time are present all the time.
Really pathetic after very moderate and careful use in five month.

Hey everyone, normally there is a setting under development that you can put a check to leave the screen on while charging the GSII. I looked and no box to check. Anyone know if there is a different way to do this on the GSI?

Probably not a good idea. AMOLED screens can suffer from burn in. Likely why Samsung removed the option. Many Nexus One owners will testify to this because they have a faint image of the Froyo notification bar forever on their screen.

Correct. Burn in is a real concern on any OLED/AMOLED screens as blue pixels have very short life span. Don't leave it on for extended period. Don't use the max brightness all the time.
Thanks everyone. That makes sense, they removed this option from the phone. I always use the Auto brightness on my GSII. I did always use this option on my Nexus S to leave screen on while charging.

I use screebl from my htc inspire and it seems to work good on this device.
Inspire is a LCD screen and won't get burn-in. DON'T do it for any OLED/AMOLED screens. You get burn-in very easily.

I've left my Cappy AMOLED screen on for hours at a time and pretty much always while charging. I've never had (or heard of) any issues with burn in. Is the AMOLED Plus on the SGSII the issue or am I just lucky with my Cappy?

Sometimes you will have to be on special background to see the effect. A lot of Captivate onwers, Galaxy S owners and Samsung Focus owners found out the hardway. Just search screen burn-in in the respective forums. The blue pixles used to be only 2000 to 4000 hours of life span. I'm pretty sure Samsung has improved it to something like 8000 to 14000 hours but there is no specifics released by Samsung. So, you can count those hours to see how that will affect your screen burn-in.
Some phone screens get burn-in quite easily than others. So there is manufacture variations as well. I personally don't want to risk it. It's easier to get burn-in on these screens than today's Plasma TVs which typically has 80,000 to 100,000 hours half-brightness lifespan, or 10 times less likely to get burn-in than our phone screen. And TVs usually display motion videos instead of static text on the phone.

I know it must depend, at least to some extent, on the hardware... but I doubt they actually max it out at the factory... i'm just sayin =) would be nice to have in bright sunlight!

I would imagine you could increase the brightness by upping the voltage of whatever controls it, but I'm not sure if there is a hardware cap or not. I doubt it would be very safe for the hardware though...

No, because it's only the backlight. But it certainly wouldn't be /good/ for the phone at all. But I haven't developed anything for the phone, and am somewhat new to the scene, so don't take my word alone on it

AMOLED screens don't have backlights.
It's not so much burn-in you have to worry about as burn-out - the individual LEDs are prone to do that if they have to display the same image or colour for long periods of time. Blue, for example, will burn out the fastest. There's a lot of discussion that went on around AMOLEDs for the earlier phones that used the screen tech, like the Nexus One and the SGS.
As for decreasing brightness, Screen Filter is the way to go.

Screen Filter. I've been using it for a when I read before I sleep. Very simple, good app.
Even if you do manage to find something to increase the max brightness, I wouldn't. There are usually caps on those things for a reason.

not a problem ... i experienced 'burn-out' SEVERAL years ago
seriously though, compared to my fruit phone, the maxx leaves a little to be desired in direct sunlight. it's ok, but just could be better. in fact, i almost switched back to my 4s because of that ... bought a mophie juice pack air yesterday and thought ... oh yeah, 2 days of battery, even more than my maxx. .. then i see that ICS is allegedly hitting in a few days so figured i would wait it out. i can always return the mophie!!!

I also use screen filter for additional dimming for nighttime. Juice Defender Ultimate also offers reduced band augmented brightness, although I don't know if their augmented brightness is any brighter than stock (probably not.)
RAZR stock brightness is crazy bright why would you want that your screens probably going to overheat if you go above the manufacturer settings

To make it brighter you'll need a moded kernel, but such thing wasn't released for razr yet

1) you are talking of low light, cause if you raise it, white will become much more whiter...
2) white on sgs2 is not white, is blueish... simply some people recognizes blueish white whiter than yellowish, is just subjective... but no one of both has a perfect whiter... if you want real colors, you have to go on ips based screens, not amoled
For lowering brightness, I use this app called Easy on the Eyes. It can reduce your brightness from the original lowest setting. If you have a mac, you can find it on the app store.
I just recently bought a refurb S2 from ATT as an upgrade. I also just read up on how these screens quickly burn out and leave imprints from static images. So for you guys that have had this phone since launch, how bad is it? Is it even noticeable?

Honestly, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Burn in is about the same on most display panels. You would have to leave you screen on permanently for extended periods of time to experience anything like what the host of that video is talking about. This is the first I've even heard of it and I've had the same gs2 since launch.

I bought my phone the day it released. I use my phone a lot and I have yet to see what you shared with that Video on my phone. I think you'll be alright.

Mine has some slight burn in in the status bar, nothing really major but it's noticeable on all blue or light gray backgrounds and low brightness.
At first it drove me crazy but you kinda get used to it and I now don't mind it.
By the way, the i9100 forum has more topics on this if you want a reference.
i got my refurb from AT&T a little over a week and a half ago and my screen is pretty bad in low light conditions. i dunno if its screen burn in but there are noticeable blotches on the screen when dark images are shown. luckily you cant really see it during normal conditions.
The only devices I've ever seen with burn-in are store display units - which are kept with the screen on nearly all the time displaying the same damn thing.

The SG2 is especially bad about this since they usually don't play any "demo" on that model in the stores, the phone is kept on the home screen all hours of the day and night, or at least that's what the AT&T reps told me

After a few months I noticed that the the color is slightly off in full screen apps where the notification area is. I do tend to keep the screen on quite a bit though.

My Cappy before the digitizer broke on me, had burn in from the status of time/signal strength. My GS2 no issues at all.

Same here, got it release day and have had no problems. I usually keep auto brightness on but towards the dim side. Screen is plenty bright anyways.
I can vouch for amoled screens getting some burn in if you're not careful. My nexus one has a permanent mail box burned in from a text message reminder app that I used to use that would keep the screen awake with that static image. I'm sure all screens will do this though and I'm just more careful with this phone

The ICS launchers have caused burn in on my screen because of the app drawer launcher. You don't notice it unless you are on low light levels with a grey image though.

All IPS screens have some degree of ghosting, it's the nature of IPS technology, but that's totally perceived differently amongst users. Some see it, some don't (I don't see it not even in games), but I know it's there.
However IPS displays do not have the dreaded AMOLED burn in problems, where static images (blues and whites are the most problematic) eventually burn in like those old ATM CRT screens (some people have burn in screens after just a couple of months), so I rather have IPS screen over AMOLEDs!

That does not happen on real life usage. Maybe after using for 2-3 years, the burn in would be visible.
Only time the burn in is visible after months, is on the showroom models which is turned on all the time.
I have my 2 years old S2 and still there's no burn in .
I only get "ghost" if I force the screen to move a million mph. Never on a game or elsewhere.

tell that to my galaxy nexus with a burned in status bar and navigation bar. better yet, tell that to my galaxy s4 where I did the black status bar mod and within a month those pixels degraded from not being used.

I beg to differ. Happened to me with 2 fascinates. The status bar burned in after about 3 mos. Strangely enough though, I never got it on Motorola amoled screens. We have 3 og razrs in the family, all around 2yrs old, and have no burn-in at all.

I hope you are talking about ATM Screens burning-in after a few years right? Because AMOLEDS tend to burn in just after a few months under certain conditions and usage.
And to make matters worse, it also burns in WITHOUT EVEN USING IT! UV light also degrades the screen, and if you consider UV to be present even on office lighting then you better place your phone screen side down while on your desk!
If you don't believe me, do some research right here in XDA, there are many examples (with photos) demonstrating such facts!
EDIT: Heck, here's some photos demonstrating a brand new Galaxy Note which had the screen protector (with Ads) on a store shelf. When removed, it revealed screen burn-in! (see the round shape imprinted on the screen).

Short answer is: When you scroll a list on your screen, you will notice the letters are somewhat smudged or blurred, and also screen elements leave a trail behind.
Also on high action games some people see the same effect.
For me it's not that noticeable even at 20/20 eyesight. Or at least I don't perceive it as an annoyance.\

Oh yes. I know about this effect. I have experienced this in past, and strangely on amoled devices. I've never experienced this on G2. Damn you guys and my ocd, now everytime I'll be scrolling I'll be looking for this 'ghost effect'.

My gnexus had burn in twice. First time was about 6 months after getting it. Got a replacement. Second time was about 9 months later. The first burn in was a web page that I had only looked at for a few seconds. It happened almost instantly. I don't know why, but it did. I was always very careful to not leave the screen on and it still happened. Second burn in was the home screen clock widget. This one made a little more sense. Either way, I love not having to worry about it anymore with the g2. I will personally never get a amoled phone ever again.

I can see the ghost effect,its easy to see when scrooling in apps folder where all the aps are.Doesnt bother me abit tho.The amoleds also have the same problem there arent free from this effect.The only thing i miss is the colors,(but G2 is close enough) i wont talk about blacks,cause they werent that black when you were looking in a dark room.. And until they fix the degration that causes the burn in and all,i wont go back to amoled (so no galaxy ever again for me...).And man the amoled tvs will soon have huge problems lol
