unlocked phone but when asked to install clockworkmod i said yes then it said could not download and said it would retry, but failed and shutdown. now i cannot go into to stock recovery or rerun the unlock program to try to have it install clockworkmod. im so lost. please help. detailed instructions would help since all the other ways to put a recovery program on have failed.
What does your phone say when you're in the bootloader menu? Are you s-on or s-off?
If you're s-off with revolutionary at the top, then you need to flash the recovery image. It may be available as a zip, and you can run fastboot with it. I personally use twrp over cwm. You'll find the guide here

Assuming when you say Unlocked, you mean the bootloader. Either way,
Hasoons tool will assist you. It can help from unlocking the bootloader, install the custom recovery,a(4ext), and gaining root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1493905
To gain ROOT, after installing a custom recovery, you boot into recovery and flash SuperSU.
Read read read... it's all here.
good luck

Tonight, +Wil Wheaton was trying to root his HTC One and failing miserably. He was able to get recovery installed, but couldn't figure out how to get Superuser installed through recovery (some issue with mounting, blah blah).

Tough bootloaders call for an even tougher recovery. I'm proud to announce the new Wil Wheaton Recovery. Wil Wheaton will offer to root your device if root access is missing.
Will Wheaton Recovery is a limited edition recovery, exclusive to the HTC Ones (AT&T + Tmobile) and Wil Wheatons. Enjoy!
Download Wil Wheaton Recovery and flash it with fastboot:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/wHil-wheaton.img
Boot recovery, then just reboot back to Android once in the recovery menu. Before recovery exits, it will automatically prompt you to install root if it is missing.
Once rooted, just install Superuser off Google Play. It will finish off the rooting process:

I read about this the other day, and was about to make a thread asking how it worked because I'm about to root my wife's new phone. I got sick of HTC's inconsistent build quality and went to Samsung (I'm regretting that and hopefully getting a One myself soon), but wanted to make sure the process with this was the same as when I last did it. Go to htcdev.com, unlock your bootloader, then flash this through bootloader. That's it! Right? Haha, thanks in advance.
Hopefully this helps others and not just me being unfamiliar with HTC and not reading enough...
Yup, it's the same old process.

Hello, after messing with my stock rom for a while I tried to get a few different ones to install. After none of them would I kind of... raged wiped my phone clean. I don't know what I've done wrong but the furthest I can get on anything is bootloop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit:
Now my TWRP is gone...tried installing it again with fastboot and with .zip method. No dice. I'm lost.

Please take a look at my guide:
Scroll to about the end of the first post.
Also note that certain Roms only work on certain hboots.
Always make sure to find out which you should be on before flashing.

Thank you for your assistance. Got up to this point
III. Then it's time to push a recovery.img.
1. Download http://animeondroid.host22.com/recovery.img = Thanks 4ext team.
The link seems to be dead. I'll see if I can find it on the net.
Edit:
Couldn't find the file. I'm going to just install 4ext from in the phone. The guide has been a great help otherwise thanks.

The link is broken. Couldn't find a recovery.img on 4ext website.
Edit 2: The phone will not install 4ext busybox or supersu from within the os. The hboot says unlocked and S-off. Any ideas?
have you tried CWM recovery image file thru fastboot? you can always change recovery afterwards.
Hi guys.
I have recently developed a simple HTC Evo 3D Root Toolkit. This toolkit is very simple and easy to use, just follow onscreen instructions and in few clicks root your device. After rooting process you will get Unlocked Bootloader (S-OFF),Custom recovery (you can chose within cwm, cwm touch and twrp), Root access(SuperSU or Superuser app). I update this app very soon and if you see some bugs and things like that please send me a message. App is tested and you must accept the Disclaimer window. The website for this app will arrive very soon. I hope that this app will be very useful for you and if you like it click thanks button and spread the word about this project.

I am not responsible for any damage to your device and bricking it...
...I've been trading PMs with ShadowGaba and this toolkit is quite worth it, actually.
For an unlock no0b such as myself, I was initially cowardly. In the end, after about 12 hours of trial-and-error, it's still absolutely worth it.
Although not entirely clear, SGs toolkit did a successful job of unlocking, installing a recovery, and installing a superuser.
Some of the steps almost felt superfluous, but SG's right; for the most part, follow the directions and you'll unlock successfully.
The only snag for me was having to switch to 4ext recovery (the toolkit offers only twrp and clockworkmod; it'd be nice if 4ext was one of the choices) in order to smartflash a ROM; only because I'm still on 1.58 hboot and S-on, post-unlocking. (Many ROMS just don't flash properly because of the 1.58 hboot and S-on; besides, many posts recommended 4ext recovery in smartflash mode to properly load ROMs, anyhow.)
Although I won't be enjoying any JB ROMs until I wire-trick my way to S-off and/or downgrade my hboot, I am currently enjoying Nega-Lite's Blu-Rom 2.95.651.5 immensely, without fail.
The battery-life and the smoothness are incredibly slick and worth it to flash to from my God-awful, battery-draining, store-bought VM JB OS.
I personally think I'm resourceful enough to get through any snags in the toolkit process, but ShadowGaba was well on-hand and curious to know if I unlocked successfully.
To the fearful, I'm sure SG would help out if you're stuck.
If you're questioning whether or not to unlock, I say go for it; so many delicious ROMs for your HTC EVO 3D await your discovery.
Cheers, ShadowGaba.

I will soon update this toolkit, but unfortunately 4ext recovery can ony be installed with Recovery Control. This is app which you can download from google play.
Can u send me the link
SENT FROM MY STOCKED OUT EVO 3D(PLEASE SOM1 HELP ME A.S.A.P)
Important Note
After Unlocking bootloader using this toolkit you will be able to flash custom roms, but not the custom kernels.
But, using one simple trick you can flash custom kernels:
1.Boot into recovery using fastboot or using HTC Dumlock
For any other info, stay tuned in this thread.
Flashing 4ext recovery
I was searching around and i found way to flash a 4ext recovery.
Install .apk from attachment to your device or download the app from google play.
Flash 4ext with this app.

Okay meatfest. To get S-OFF you must downgrade hboot to 1.49 and use revolutionary to gain S-OFF.
I will explain why your bootloader says Unlocked and S-ON. HTC has modified new devices HBOOT-s, in other words , they have prohibited flashing custom kernels and some roms to your and mine device. So you have couple solutions:
1.Downgrade HBOOT and gain Revolutionary S-OFF
2.Use HTC Dumlock
3.Flash 4ext recovery
4.Boot into recovery using fastboot and flash ...
Thank you for replying and asstance,
Kind regards, Gabrijel

HTC Unlock does not work on my phone
Hi, I have hboot 1.58 and software 2.95 and the HTC Dev Unlock method does not work for my phone. The commands go thru but the phone never switches to the Unlock Screen. Do you know of a way to unlock without using the HTC Unlock method??

I ran into the same issue with mine. The issue in my case it was the adb files needed to generate the code to unlock it per the HTC unlock method. The adb files I used (as I am sure you did the same) was part of some package that included it. So I decided to just download the adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030 and executed the CMD prompt from adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030\sdk\platform-tools. Then I followed the HTC Unlock instructions and it worked.
