I can't edit my contacts unless I'm in airplane mode. When the phone is on the "Connection" section of all contacts has an icon of a SIM in it and I can't edit them. When in airplane mode the "Connection" section of all contacts has the icon of the Phone in it and I can edit them. Is this normal for the Verizon GN2? Anyone else seen this?

I just looked and Menu->Contacts to display in the Contacts app has the options: All Contacts, SIM, Phone, my Yahoo email address, and Customize list. When I long press on the SIM option there are no contacts, however Customized list option has the bulk of them. Not sure how they got there. I synced 2.5 months ago from Gmail and I made no choice at the time that I can recall. Wondering how I can move them to Phone.
An odd thing as I stated above is that an icon of a SIM appears in all contacts except when Airplane mode is off and I can edit them.
I would try to just delete all contacts and re sync then from Google. Mage sure they are whisky saved to Google first or Getty sort backup from the playstore backup contacts sheets them and take and it should let you pick Google to restore them to.

Import to what? I was thinking to just start fresh with contacts, but if you got an easier way excellent.

I discovered that at least when you import from USB (the external card) you don't get options to transfer contacts from SIM, Phone, SDcard to within each other. No question was asked about where to place the data. Not at least with my stock ROM (with root).
However I imported a backup from the external card (USB) (with the contact data in the state I mentioned in the OP) and I was glad to discover that all contacts are now once again editable while the cellular radio is enabled (it's not in Airplane mode). In addition there is now a Phone rather SIM icon visible in the Connection section of all contacts. Thanks.

Yep, they'll go their own way sometimes. Just discovered the Kii keyboard. Letters, numbers, special chars and what a joy even arrow keys all display at the same time. Plus swype, a learning dictionary and a fairly good auto-correct.

Here is my problem or annoyance if you will. I added my contacts to my phone and added their email accounts and numbers. I synced Facebook to my contacts so it would merge my contacts with their Facebook pictures and such. Well now my contacts show their name twice. One being Facebook and the other being the phone number on my sim card. Is there any way to merge them together and have my contacts listed just one time in my contacts folder?
Did that make any sense?
If you go to Contacts>Menu>Display Options you can edit the options to show contacts from SIM card or not, have you tried that?

Well the problem with that is that I can not edit the contacts with Facebook information. It will not let me add a phone number. This would be sweet if I could do that because then I would not need the contacts that I saved to the sim card.

Try copying your contacts from sim to phone. Then go to the options to only display phone contacts.

Most likely you have more that one vcf file on external sd being restored .

Thanks for the responses guys. I will try to copy the contacts to the phone and see if I can get a merge going.
Also it's better to have them all saved as Google contacts anyway so if you lose your sim or do a factory reset they'll all sync up again after you put in your gmail info on initial setup.

Looks like importing from the sim card to the phone fixed my problem. This merged all of my phone numbers to my friends list from Facebook. Thanks!
Why can't you change the default for your contact that you create on the phone to default to a Google contact instead of the phone contact? Does anyone know how this can be changed? I rooted my phone and lost a couple contacts that I had put in the phone because phone contacts don't sync to the gmail account. Glad I at least found this out early so I don't have a huge problem when putting a different rom on it in the future.

that was a really annoying "feature" of the samsung fascinate. I guess the only way around it is to use the AOSP contacts program. I will attempt to restore it from titanium backup and see if it works
it usually sets it as gmail right out of the gate when i'm creating contacts, etc...i find myself checking every once in awhile now anyways. it is truly annoying!

A) language
B) It's a feature of sense, therefore htc, not vzw, is to blame.
however, yes, annoying. One solution would be to export contracts to SD from phone, import from SD to google.
(you would have to keep doing this, but it's a good way to back up before wipe/flash.)

I did the same thing. I went into gmail and organized/updated all my contacts. So now all my phone contacts are Google contacts. Be sure to go into gmail and do a perge/merge of any duplicates. This makes porting contacts over that much easier.
What really annoyed me was the linking/suggested linking of contacts on the phone vs google vs facebook. After you centralize everything around your google contacts things become much easier.
To set contact default to Google go into you contact list then press menu and choose view next uncheck the box that says "phone" and now your default is Google

I think if you create the new contact in your google account (vs on the phone) then it will sync up and everything will be OK.
I have to get into my google account contacts and clean up some stuff, duplicates, etc., that seem to appear every now and then.

Thanks, this is one step closer to what I need. I have a couple GMail accounts on my phone one of which I use solely for work contacts and I use the option of selecting which GMail account I added the new contact to. Really missing this feature

That just changes which contacts show. I am talking about entering a new contact and letting it be a Google contact by default. I don't want to accidentally set it up as a phone contact which will not sync to your Google account.

I gotta say Contact Management with Android has been probably one of my biggest frustrations. I like the ability to sync my GMail contacts, that's easy enough. But between getting pictures and "linking" "synching" and "attaching" contacts via Twitter, MS Exchange, and other means... TO not being able to only populate mobile numbers when creating SMS/MMS's and such, it is just way more difficult than it should be.
It could and SHOULD be much simpler. Maybe I'm just a wii-todd, idk.. Either way, I feel your pain dude.
Ya so was I.... Maybe since u have a mixture it isn't working for u.....Export all your contact to Google then remove ur Google account from the phone then delete all ur contacts off ur phone then sync with Google and do the steps I posted before

When I start a text and put in the name of the contact I want to message, duplicates are showing. I have it set so it doesn't do this for calls, but I can figure out how to do it for texts. It shows 2 of every contact. Is there a way to set it do it only pulls names from either the phone or sim?
Any sUggestions as to why this is happening?

I already did that. i dont have this issue for when I make calls and look up names, just texts. Im not storing my stuff on gmail either
This all started after I tried to update my phone to the newest update thru mini kies. i ended up having to wipe my phone and restart. I did get the update, and now i noticed its doing this.
It looks as though the Messaging contacts display is ignoring the 'Contacts-->Display Options' settings. I have my phone contacts set to display just the names etc from the Phone memory, not the SIM memory and it works well - no duplicates. However, when composing a Message or Email and press the Contact button, the list of contacts shows 2 of everybody. I've gone through everything obvious but can't see it, now turning to the experts for advice please? What do i need to tick/untick remove or whatever to put this right?
Any suggestions how to make this stop?

My contacts are not backed up to gmail, and im just using the regular stock rom. I dont have phone phone flashed/rooted/whatever.
I had the same problem
sign in to gmail on your computer click contacts it will display all including the phone numbers stored on you your phone if you delete them all (contacts with phone numbers) it should take off all duplicate contacts away
but make sure all phone numbers stored already on your sim card
its something about MIUI if you ever used it before
if that didn't work I know for sure if you have a gmail contact and a phone number contact with the same name and you trying to send sms or mms it show both of them as to send to at that point I would edit the first name of gmail contact by adding * to the name
Hope that helps
But I dont have any contacts listed on my gmail contacts when I sign in on my laptop.

the only thing i can think of that after you restore your phone do you restore it from backup that it has a duplicate contacts ?
or go under contacts/press the first key to the left/display option/ choose phone, sim, gmail (all) then view your contact list and delete all duplicate contacts
best thing i found is to store contacts on sim only that allow you to import them to any phone and also to your own phone after you wipe it off
My contacts show up fine in my address book, no duplicates. So I know the issue isnt with that. There are no duplicates on my phone.
I dont know what to do. Ive tried everything, and its really annoying when trying to send a text to go thru all those duplicates.
when I go to create a text, there are also email addresses showing when I begin typing a name to search for a contact. I dont know where they are coming from

You need to backup all your contacts to gmail. First.
Go to accounts & Sync and tap your google account or any other email accounts you have on your phone. It will give your sync screen, see if "sync contacts" is ticked there. If it is then try unticking it, see if that helps.

I have been trying to figure this out for a while now... I have some of my contacts that get automatically put back in every time I flash a new rom.... There the contacts I had back when I have the EVO. Now why if I synced my phone with the new contacts before flashing a rom does it not put all the new contacts in? Even if I go back to my original rom im still missing them unless I run verizon backup assist, which is not included in many roms...
Make sure you're saving new contacts to Google (in the dropdown). It defaults to Phone unless you hit menu (while in the contact list), View & uncheck all but Google.

I really screwed up this time... Normally I'm pretty good with backing up and preventing this kinda stuff but this one slipped through my fingers. I did a factory reset of my Samsung S3 (US Cellular) and formatted it on my PC via USB. I assumed all my contacts had been saved through my gmail account, but apparently they were not.
#1. Is there any way I can possibly retrieve some of my lost contacts? One number in particular is extremely important.
#2. If they weren't being saved to my Gmail account (some did, some didn't), where did they save to?

I'm supposed to 'sync' every time I want a number to be saved? I've had this number in my phone for months and months.
If your contacts haven't been saved in GMail account then see if your Sim Card has them. When you save a contact, you can choose to save it in your phone's memory or Sim Card. To see if your Sik Card has your contacts saved, Go to Contacts, press Home button and tap Import and hen choose import from Sim Card.

Normally, and if you activated the sync, it should sync once you created the contact and you got an internet connection. If this did not happen, and you already formatted anything and don't have any nandroid backup or Titanium Backup of the contacts files, I fear there is no way to get those contacts not synced back.
Did you check the contacts in Gmail on web? The phone saves to Google account based on preferences settings.

Yes.
Check with your Service Provider, and demand a print of calls or sms messages sent from your number in a specific time frame, that way you'll 100% get the number. But this method is not free, they will charge you for it. Good luck.
