[Q] Can´t update system apps any more - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
today a few updates popped up, so I went to Play Store and pressed update, While "normal" apps updated just fine, all "system" apps, like Maps or SwiftKey Keyboard could not be updated, because of insufficient storage. OS Monitor shows me that my /SYSTEM partition is 97 % full, only 16 MB left. This seems not to be enough for an 2 MB update... Tried to deinstall and Reinstall SwiftKey but it didn´t work! Now I don´t have Swiftkey at all
I browsed the /system directory with root explorer but did not find anything unusual that might take up unneccessary space.
What can I do to free some space on /system?
Running Stock LPI with rootkernel, + JKAY.
THANKS A LOT!
Kusie

Really? Noone? Wow ...

Kusie, this isn't some kind of forum where memebers always help you out. You need to have some patience, or even if no one helps you, maybe they dont know the answer to your question or haven't seen your thread. No one is in here 24/7 and all posts cannot be guaranteed an answer, but be a little appreciative for what they all have done so far..even if no one has helped you
Have you tried wiping Play Store data and rebooting?
And also, apps need more space for the cache and that's why maybe you cant download swiftkey. Free up some space in system and try again.
Cheers.

Strange Problem - System Memory filling up

Hi Guyse,
I'm having a very strange problem with my a70.
My system memory is getting fuller and fuller. Usually, I had about 60 - 70 MiB of empty storage left.
Since yesterday, I got the low memory message a few times. Uninstalled a few apps, everything was ok again.
Low memory message again.
After doing this a couple of times, I checked my system memory with
DiskUsage:
Data 299 MiB
--------------------------
Applications 89,1 MiB
System Data 187,2 MiB
Free Space 23,2 MiB
That is way too much System Data, I thought. And I was right.
I work in a retail store. Unboxed a brand-new A70, installed 2.326, looked up empty Storage - 235 MiB !
So the original Android needs only 64 MiB - that's a huge difference.
I already used Cachecleaner, bought me exactly 1.5 MiB.
Any idea how to solve this Problem?
I'd be grateful for every hint.
The only things changed in the last days before this happened:
- Updated to 2.326
(But I guess more users would report this if it was a bug)
- Finally got an prepaid Credit Card and went wild on the market.
(I have a slightly strange feeling that the downloaded apk's from the market are stored in the system memory, but can't go further in because of missing root. and knowledge. and why didn't I experience this problem sooner when downloading demos from the market ?)
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
pintness
I have the same problem with my A101IT. It says I still have 335mb left and i started downloading and installing some apps and the message said low on disk space. So I started deleting all the apps. And now it's saying I have 160mb left.... It should give back atleast 250mb space but it didn't......
I was having this problem, and tracked it down to an application 'Perfect Viewer' which was building image cache in the system memory (about 30MB). After contacting the author, he moved the cache to SD storage and the problem was resolved. You may have a similarly misbehaving application. Go to Settings->Applications->Manage applications->All and hit Menu->Sort by size. Check each application to see how much data they have stored. If you can, move it to internal storage. If you can't, and it's in the tens of MBs, contact the author - or just uninstall it and use an alternative.
Try app2sd

As I wrote, I already used CacheCleaner, didn't bring much.
My biggest application is 5 MiB on the system partition.
I still think my date\system folder is way too big. Can someone please check the size on their device? (You can do it with DiskUsage from the market; start and choose "App Storage")
Thanks
It looks like /cache folder is mounted on /data partition...
If you root your device and you clean /cache folder you probably will have back all your lost space... In this folder there are downladed apks from market app that are cached for the install but are not cleaned by the system after the installation...
Try also to delete all dex file from /data/dalvik-cache
Then reboot...
The reboot will be very slow because dex file will be recreated... but dex from old apps no more present on the device will be cleaned up .

damn, I was afraid of something like that.
Never read about this kind of behaviour before, is it a general bug in android?
Is there any possibility to fix this without rooting? I don't want to lose my warranty and temp root would not work if I understand this correct. If there would be any for 2.326.
Best regards,
Pint

Temp root would give you the possibility to clear out the cache since it's on the /data partition.
Archangel is reported to work sometimes on 2.3.26 you can always try.
It really works!! Thank you!!

"Insufficient memory..." issue!

Hey guys!
I get this "insufficient memory" issue every time I try to install poweramp from play store and it's becoming really annoying. And regardless how many time I wipe cache or free up memory I still get this message. And what makes me more angry about this issue is the fact that I have 1.49 gb free phone memory, 3.24 gb free internal mem., and 2.96 free external mem.
Plz help....
I'm using ics paranoid android rom if this would help...
Galaxy s2
i am using paranoid also and i had this problem two days before , i think i changed my kernel with clean install , and the problem solved , try out the latest my fluxi kernel and latest paranoid 1.4 or 1.3 , i love 1.3 bec. of easy hyprid settings
"go into either the /system/app/ or /data/app/ directory and delete the odex file that has the same name as the poweramp.apk" if this helps say thanks to MyLifeRocks10 as he posted this first

I have had the same problem for weeks and tried all the suggestions I could find on the Internet, nothing worked. Then I found a posting explaining that a possibility would be to move the default installation location to the sdcard. So I used the terminal emulator (rooted phone), to check the current setting first. It was already redirected to external memory, so I tried to change it back to internal memory (Command: "pm set-install-location 1"), which solved the problem!!!! I now can install in internal memory, using link2sd I keep the internal usage to minimal, problems solved! :good:
Hope this helps,
Peter

[Q] SOLVED: Can't update apps, can't install apps

Not only will My Galaxy S2 not let me install new apps (trying to install VX Connectbot at a little over 800K) although it has 1.97 GB of internal storage space free, it won't let me update four apps either. They were sitting there trying to update for about half an hour before I gave up.
There's nothing wrong with the (Wifi) Internet Connection, as proved by other apps on the phone as well as by the Google Play Store updater.
If I go into Settings, Apps to look at the Play Store entry, it never finishes updating the Cache and Data storage figures, so the 'Clear Data' button is greyed out. If it wasn't I could clear the data and force the app to re-download it from Google's server. I've also tried rebooting but this makes no difference.
I really don't want to have to do a factory reset to fix this so I'd be grateful for any ideas. The phone is running stock Jelly Bean supplied by Samsung.

I don't think Stock JB is rolled out yet by Samsung. But anyways try to clear cache and dalvik cache from recovery. This mostly resolves issues in any ROM.
Secondly, what are you referring to when you mention internal storage? If it's data partition then 1.97 is total size and not free. So please check that.
Lastly what ROM are you coming from? If its ICS then a factory reset is strongly recommended.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm trying to handle a million things at the same time, which is always when something else goes wrong. It is, of course, running ICS 4.0.4. I thought about clearing the cache via recovery and I'll do that if I don't find another solution. The phone won't be out of action for too long.

It was running Gingerbread when I got it but I did the factory reset before doing an OTA update to ICS.
No issues
Since you are now on 4.0.4 do not do a factory reset since your kernel might have the Brick bug.
There are threads that provide steps on re flashing ROM over 4.0.4. You will need to first flash a custom kernel that does not have this bug like Siyah or cf-root and then flash a ROM.
Just ensure that you follow the steps properly to get a clean install.

I powered down and booted into Recovery, wiped the cache, and rebooted. It only took about 40 seconds to reboot which seems strange to me as under 2.2 and, I think, 2.3, it took a few minutes to rebuild the cache. Then the first thing that happens on keying in my pin and reaching the home page, I get the message, "Unfortunately, eBay has stopped." Maybe this has something to do with the problem, maybe it doesn't.
One other thing I noticed earlier but didn't mention as it didn't seem relevant is that some apps have changed their name in Settings, Applications. For example, Picshop Lite is now listed as air.ca.esdot.PicShop.Lite.
Anyway, it has made no difference. I look at any app in the list and it sits there saying "Computing...". I can force-stop running apps but I can't install apps, uninstall apps, or update apps. I'm going to leave this overnight (it's late here) and if I can't think of anything else before tomorrow I'll have to do a factory reset and reinstall everything.
Thanks, acekay, your post appeared while I was still editing mine. I knew absolutely nothing about this bug so you might have saved me from bricking the phone. The page you linked to mentions CWM. Since mine is a Samsung stock ROM it would be the stock recovery I'd be using. Is this likely to brick the phone? I guess it's better to be on the safe side and follow the instructions.
I'm also wondering about my legal position here. I got the phone from Virgin Mobile (UK) on a monthly plan. It was running Gingerbread before I did the OTA update to ICS and the update went OK. If the phone messes up and I do a factory reset and that bricks the phone, who is responsible, I wonder, Virgin Mobile or Samsung...
It took some lateral thinking but I think I've solved it. I powered down the phone, took out the micro-SD card, and powered up again. I went into Settings, Applications, Google Play Store and cleared the Data. I then ran the Play Store app and ran the four updates that were pending and everything went OK, so I tried installing VX Connectbot and that went OK, too, as did uninstalling the original Connectbot. As a precaution I uninstalled the eBay app just in case that was causing the problem. It's possible that somehow the eBay app got installed onto the SD card in error and that might have something to do with it stopping with an error every time I rebooted the phone.
I've noticed that the names in Settings, Applications are all now back to normal so I'm guessing that in fact it was something in Play Store's data that was messed up. Of course, that might have been caused by the eBay app. <Sarah Connor> God, a person could go crazy thinking about this. </Sarah Connor>
Anyway, thanks again, acekay. Working through my problem and your responses led to a solution.
Good to know its solved. So the issue was with moving the apps to SD . Better still that you tried this before a reset.
In case you plan on playing with custom ROMs in future just keep this bug in mind. Better to be cautious than sorry.
Cheers...

Well, I can't be sure. I'm nowhere near needing to move apps to the card yet, and since I've uninstalled the eBay app I've no way of knowing if that's where it was. Or if it was causing the problem. But I do know that I won't be staying on ICS forever. If Samsung ever get round to giving us JB, I'll update to that. If they don't I'll look for a non-stock (and non-Touchwiz, thankfully) ROM. So thanks for telling me about the bug.
Same problem with SGS2 4.1.2, stock rooted rom. No external SD card.
I noticed one thing. When I do the following:
Settings->Application manager->All
it displays about 200M free and 1.7GB used, but after few seconds it changes to about 450M free and 1.5G used.
At the same time it (long pressing home button and select memory usage->storage) shows 1.77GB/1.97GB free memory of system storage. So only about 200M is free. The same result is obtained in Teminal Emulator by inputting DF command. So it is very strange that in Application manager the free system memory is increased from 200M to 450M but in terminal and memory manager system manager is constant 200M.
So what the algorithm to solve the problem of install or update apps from market?

Try clearing cache using some application like ES Task Manager, I had useless cache data of about 400Mb once and the biggest contributor was chrome at 100Mb.. And try using apps like SD Maid which will help you clean out clutter.

How to get more free space

Hello! I bought Xperia M4 for my older son. As this is a common problem, like many others, he ran out of free space after he installed a few apps from Google Play. I've already look across the internet to resolve this, but I didn't get the point. So, my question is: If I root his phone and we delete some bloatware, do we get more internal space for apps out of the box? Regards, Zagor
Yes, you get more space, not much but you are able to install the apps, what you really need.
You should also try moving apps to the SD Card, you'll save even more space
Root it and install link2sd.but do not link lib files.

System storage full

Hi all.
I have a rooted Nubia X.
The problem is that in order the google apps to work, the only options is they to be moved as system apps.
I have done that with Link2SD and everything was fine, until the tool showed that the framework is updated and offered to integrate update into the system.
I have done that, but during the process, complained "out of space". I have checked and it was 0% free (before - there was).
What i did is to remove some bloatware other apps to convert to user. There was enough space (in my opinion).
But again during the process again ran out of space. And again took everything available and left 0% free.
At the end there is a lot of place somehow locked.
As you can see in the attachment a lot of space is occupied there.
My question is. Can you give me some ideas what to do, so I can remove that parasite files.
Thank you in advance!
Bro.
The first image appear to be broken.
