How to make camera work in an AOSP/AOKP Rom - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have used nearly all AOSP and AOKP Roms and i haven't managed to make the camera work flawlessly. I have searched all over xda (and Internet) and tried various "solutions".
Camera app does not work at all with stock AOSP kernels but it works (this is very weird) with custom kernels like siyah and yank. Problem is that it still force closes all the time, especially with the flash enabled. My cam firmware is "ZD.. "
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Edit: I have only managed to have a nearly perfect camera experience with N. E. A. R. Aosp Rom and I am very curious what did the developer do.

I will try it, thank you. Is there an external mod or camera apk that fixes the camera or is it just about the tweaks each dev puts into his Rom?
I ask because I love SlimBean and I don't want to change it!

nope, i don't know about a mod for this.
i tried a lot of things including matching and updating the cam firmware with stock rom.
tried different app's, kernels but always had this problem.
*could be that it fixed cause it's based on 4.2.2 can't tell for sure.

No camera app

Hi, I'm still fairly now to custom ROM's so I might have missed something. I ran across this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147925) ROM for my xperia P. I have been using FXP for a while now and updated it to the latest version then, flashed the eXperience rom with CWM. All works nicely but I seem to have lost the camera app. I was wondering what the cause is, is it removed by installing the eXperience or was it just not included in FXP 208? I didn't check to see if there was a camera app before I flashed eXperience over FXP CM9
I would post this in the ROM's thread but I can't as I have to few posts.
Thanks

Is that flashable on a CM9 based ROM?
I can confirm myself this does not work on CM9, I just tried and no camera showed up.
I decided I would go back to FXP by the zip. However when I try to flash it I get an Error 7 and the installation aborts. After some looking around I found some info about modifying the update script which I did, now I get Error 6. Is this fixable?
Does anyone have any idea what went wrong? I really want to be able to try out new mods but every zip I've tried to flash so far, even the ones that worked before, give me error 7.

Galaxy S3 i9300 Camera error (Custom Rom)

Hey,
I have a big problem:
I have brought the Galaxy S3 i9300 one week ago. I really don't like the stock rom so I rooted and flashed cm10.1. I really like stock vanilla Android. Everything works really smooth and stable. But when I try to launch the camera is appears this error: Camera error and under this: Can't connect to the camera. (Look at Attachments) I really need a camera and this is just
First I was thinking it was Cm but then I flashed other Roms (Supernexus, Paranoid, ...) and everytime the same. Only in Xperian Ze and Omega Rom the camera works but on those roms its the stock camera. I also tried to install a third party cam.app.
So now I don't know what to do. Is this only on my S3 or is it on someone elses.
And is there any way so flash the stock camera app or to fix this bug.
This is a well known problem.
I would recommend you start here first:

i9300 camera is a nightmare
I've run various custom roms on my original Galaxy S, an SII and now an SIII and I have never had as much frustration with any of them as I have had with the S3 camera. Like the original poster, I prefer AOSP over Samsung firmware. Even if you replace touchwiz with a different launcher it seems clunkier and less responsive than a pure Google rom. AOKP is my favourite, it's just got all my favourite features. But I've come to the conclusion that Samsung know best how to drive Samsung firmware. As much as I love AOKP when they declare a rom version "stable" or a "milestone" this is the status of the rom before it is grafted onto specific devices, which means hardware and driver issues can still arise.
All of which means if you want all your hardware to work go for a rom built on Samsung firmware. Omega rom is pretty good, but not perfect. It always starts out good for me and then gets laggy. And then I want to try AOKP again. And I do. And the camera is still crud... and so the infinite loop begins again.

[Kernel][ 4.2 [SGP 5.0][Sultan r5v2]

------- Please have a backup kernel in case this does not boot. I am not responsible for bricks. This kernel is provided to help development of Galaxy player 5.0 and give others the added features in thier 4.2 roms. This kernel is for Slim Bean 4.2 ONLY. Do not use this with CM10.1 or PAC 4.2, it will freeze on boot screen.

The only difference between this one and Sultan r5 is the incorporated radio driver.
Sultan r6 kernels are for 4.3 roms only ----- they have the radio driver but no camera, LED flashlight features.
Sultan r5 kernels are for 4.2 roms ------ they have partial working camara, LED flashlight features, but no radio driver.
What I wanted to do was add the radio driver so theres one more added feature to r5.
Lorddemonrage Try Tiny flashlight app, I found it works very good.

The camera does not work on 4.3 using sultans kernel r6. But radio does. That is why I wanted to make a kernel for 4.2 with the radio drivers. So now theres radio and camera on 4.2. If you used Sultans kernel r6 on 4.3 based rom the camera instantly closes when you open it, I had tested PAC and CM10.2 roms which are 4.3 and the camera never worked. This is a fine solution for anyone who dosen't mind running 4.2 untill the bugs in 4.3 are fixed. This way you can still run Sultans Kernel, have FM and camera working plus the flashlight tool. However, the camera only works with fast burst app, and there is no flash for pictures. Your welcome to test other camera apps with 4.2 to see if flash will work with them, I just haven't found one yet.

The bootimage and kernel modules were replaced in R6 so it would work on 4.2. I assume you would have all the features of R6 on 4.2
This kernel was compiled using Slimbean 4.2 sources. I need some feedback if this works on other 4.2 roms so let me know what rom your using and how it performs.
@joemhewitt, I did test the camera on CM10.2 with CM10.2 kernel and did get the camera working. But the flashlight feature did not work, and the radio did not work either. So I tried both Sultan r6b2 and r6 for 4.3 which gave me radio but no camera or flashlight. Thats what I found when I tested it.
OK, there really isn't much difference between 4.2 and 4.3 anyway. I may flash this depends if fast burst camera is any good.
EDIT : Can you make an international version? Thanks.

This kernel was compiled for the USA version. I can build it for International version. But I've had problems with Kubuntu so I had to move to Linux Mint. So now I have to re-downloaded and prepare everything again. I would say give it about a week and I will upload Inter. version
Fastburst camera will take a fair picture, quality could be better. No one has fixed the stock camera app for ICS or JB yet. The front camera will work but the rear will not save pictures and freeze with stock app. And you can not record video from the rear camera either. I'm trying to get some help on fixing this, its a work in progress.

Update:
With all attempts i did a factory reset, wiped system and dalvic
With Pac-Rom 06/10/2013 build (which i think is the latest for 4.2.2)
installed gapps and modified r6 working on 4.2.2, would sit on boot screen, tried another wipe and restore, same thing. tried to wipe and restore with regular sultan 5 kernel would boot to homescreen. tried to install r6 after successfull boot, would hang at boot screen again.
For CM 10.1 same as the above.
tried it again with slim, had no problems installing.

Sounds like this Kernel may only work on slimbean 4.2 . For PAC and CM it looks like I'll have to build another kernel with PAC and CM sources. I'll do more building and testing soon.
I'm sorry for the delay and will continue to work on this project but I have many other things I'm working on, Modding pc games, developing Linux Mint, programming and the list goes on but I'll compile another kernel for CM and PAC soon

[Q] Porting ROMs

I'm about to give it a go with ROM porter tool
but I wan't to ask something initially,
if my phone is android 4.1 (custom rom) , can I port and use a 4.3 rom from somewhere else?
I am also aware that I need to make sure the phones specs are similar, what specs should be similar (pixel density, processor, screen size/resoloution, etc).
Can I use a custom rom for DX as a base?
If anyone knows any similar phones to the DX i will be very greatful
I also asume if I fail miserably I can simply boot into recovery and restore my backup too
I don't want to be rude but if you don't know how to update stock roms, how you can think porting roms?
You have to know how are working libs and decompile apks/jars.
And with Rom porter tool if you click a button the Rom is not ported.

No offense taken,
I have updated my stock rom ages ago btw , it was reverting back using ruu that was something that I wasn't clear on (wasn't sure if the hboot changed) because i didn't make a back-up.
This is gonna sound really naive of me but I watched the video with the rom porter tool and it seems complicated but the steps to port in the software seem fairly easy to follow too, plus if it doesn't work, I simply restore my backup :victory:
I don't think I have much to lose tbh...

I think i understand now :cyclops:
because there are no stable versions of cyanogenmod for dx, the possiibilty to port a rom is not going to be as good as you will carry the bugs from the base cyanogenmod over to the ported rom.
Now, if i use cm9, does that mean that I can only use ported roms that support ics or can i use a ported jb rom on cm9 base? im talking about this cm mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265338 (i am aware of the several bugs btw

You cannot port JB roms over ICS roms and viceversa, this because the kernel won't boot both of them.

Ouch,
So the main issue is trying to find a stable version of CM that runs JB or higher to use as a base to port roms over. But trying to fix the bugs are difficult because it is hard to find the problem and the CM website have not even released CM for dx.
