[Q] Larger then 4 gb files on S2 micro sd card??? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello gentlemen and ladies...
I am wondering if it is yet possible to have a format on my micro sd card that will let me play files larger then 4 gb in size. My intentions are to use my phone as media player, as i would like to buy a miracast device so i can do wireless streaming to my 1080p projector, or take it on the road with me to stream to a hotel HDTV, in full resolution.
I have a galaxy S2 phone with 32 gb micro sd size (would like to upgrade to a larger size), and just upgraded to jelly bean...
My question, is this possible, and if yes could someone tell/show me how i might be able to accomplish this feat? (the ONLY thing that bothers me about android is the 4gb limit, with phones being able to play 1080p movies it makes little to no sense to me!)
Thanks for you time
Jim

[Q] Why 64GB?

It's the question around my head stopping me to click on the pre-order button.
I have a N1 and though struggling with the internal memory, can't see having more than maybe 1GB or 2 in apps. I get that with this i would install a lot more, but what, another 2 GB? Maybe even 4?. Maybe 4 more in Music. I guess i would put there some films or series to watch. Maybe add what... 4GB? 8? I have a spare 16GB SD card (for use with the dock, which would probably get the films or series) and probably will get a 16 or 32 microSD for the tablet itself. That would be, at least, 64Gb. If i get the 64Gb version, it would mean at least 96GB
Why getting then the 64GB? I'm serious, i would really like to know the reasons people are behind the 64gb version. It's not that i believe it's not necessary, it's that I'm probably missing something in the equation and i don't want to miss anything so i can make the right choice before regretting not buying the right one.
Because.... People can afford it?

HD videos can get pretty dang big...10+ GB for 1080p (assuming bluray rip).
simple fact is HD video takes a lot of space. you put a few movies on at full res on the tablet, you'll soon see 64GB evaporate.
I have 32gb on my phone and am under constant pressure to swap things around because I don't have enough space.
I ordered the 64GB. Because I don't want any limitations and have to "worry" about if I have enough space.
And now when we have hardware that can handle high quality video 720p/1080p why don't use it. When you have gone HD you never want to go back to low resolution videos.
All movies/series I watch are 720p mkv.
4-7GB is one movie.
1-1.5GB is on serie episode
0.5-1GB is one game, and those will gets bigger now when they can be more advanced.
even apps will get bigger when they gets more advance.
So fast you will reached the 32GB mark.

All depends on your usage.
I keep around 20 gigs worth of music on my phone plus constantly swap out TV shows.
I got the 64gb version coming AND a 64gb microSD for it as well... I could easily see myself using the 64gb internal to fill up with pics and videos from the (from what it sounds like) great camera on the thing and have the microSD holding lots of videos, movies, ROMS etc... hell im lookin forward to the 2 terabyte microSD's!!
Because.........why not?
So I can laugh and look down from my mountain top upon all the 32GB peons!!!!
for $100, why not?
32GB Micro SD is about 60-70$ right now, 220$ for a 64GB. I want AT LEAST 64GB right now so I can dump all my music on it and use it instead of killing my data plan with Google Music. I'll end up getting a micro SD for it (64GB when they're a little more affordable anyways) so I can maximize the storage space on this thing. Games are huge, videos are huge. This thing takes pictures and video... why the hell not. What's 100$? You'll be paying more for the dock, but not for double the storage space? I think it's worth it.
64GB of local space is getting bigger and bigger the later we go into the future...
Look at Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Google Music, Pandora, etc. and you will see a lot of that space is now useless.
But who cares? What if I want to go on a long road trip and I pack several Blu-rays on board or several giant games on? Maybe. Well, my 16GB TF101 still has about 10GB on it..... My 16GB iPhone 4 still has about 4GB on it... My 2.5TB HDD still has about 2TB left on it....
If you have $100 extra dollars to go down on this beatiful tab, go for it!
That have been a lot of answers for such a short time, thanks
I feel i'm convinced to go with the 64GB version, didn't know some games were so huge (with a N1 it's difficult to play anything not named angry birds ), and didn't remember the huge size of the HD files (sometimes i forget that because of the 2TB disk at the main pc, which never seem to end ). The main reason being, of course, laughing and looking down from the mountain to the 32GB peons
Now, time to wait, at least for christmas, for amazon.de to send it
HD videos...each clip can easily take gigs
Just because YOU use your devices a certain way does not mean everybody else should do the same as well. Some people have way more than 64gig of music. Some people have gigs of movies (I know I do). It's nice to copy a few 4gig+ movies over and not worry about left over space when I need the space later.
I have friends like this.. they say "16gb is fine for me, its all I need, why do you need a 64gb".. /facepalm
For many people, the 32GB model (supplemented by micro SD) is probably enough. But many is not all. Especially while travelling I do need A LOT more storage - I'd rather avoid having to use external storage or an SD card in the keyboard dock unless it's just for transferring photos from for example my digital camera. As a lot of commentators have mentioned, it's once you get into media storage especially video (but also to some extent music, photos, E-books, magazines/comics/PDFs and the like) that the 64GB model becomes advantageous. Basically, there is a lot of competing media requirements these days and I can only see that increasing. Cloud storage is not really an answer, as it's a solution for some of the issues but not others.

That's exactly why i asked it seriously, not in a "i don't need it, why you do?" fashion, but in a "i don't know if i would need it, tell me why you do and i will see if i do"
It's my first tablet, and my other android device is a nexus one with just ~ 180MB for apps + storage and microSD (4gb atm). That's why i prefer asking than just deciding on my own, as i already said, i might miss something and that's what i don't want And i asked it publicly because i might not be the only one with the doubt
Well, I deleted all my music from Transformer because of free space problem. 32GB would also be too little. 64GB + some SD/mSD would be OK though.

Memory cards

Can It really use the sdxc cards?
The biggest one I see that u can buy is 128gb.
Its half the price of the tablet.
Id hate to see how much a 2tb one would cost.
Should be able to. SDXC just has an SDHC card formatted with exFAT. Just reformat the card to FAT32 and it should work fine. Though, from that I read, the Prime should support FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. So the card may just work. If you only use windows, then exFAT will be fine. If you use Linux or Mac, you may want to settle for FAT32.
They should really advertise exFAT support considering SDXC cards can go up to, what, 2TB? I know we probably won't be seeing cards of that capacity during the life cycle of this tablet, I don't think it's too unreasonable to expect 256GB MicroSD by the end of next year... SDHC won't support that :/ The only go up to 32GB.

I would use ext2 or ext4.
Why would anyone use that much storage in a tablet... Lol! Unless your the guy with 3600+ ripped (pirated movies) who wants to put a 64gb micro in the tablet and. A 128gb in the dock plus a external SSD!
Why wouldn't you just get a wireless drive?

Hi-Def movies are consistently large files. 720p videos are roughly 2-4 gigs and 1080p videos are always over 5-6 gigs.
And before I get the obligatory, "Why would you want to watch a 1080p video on a 720p screen brah, herp derp," it's because I am constantly going over to different friends' or family's' houses and watching movies or videos by hooking up my laptop via HDMI. My laptop, however, is a huge honker with a **** battery life, so I have to look for somewhere to set it carefully and with good ventilation, that is both in reach of the HDMI cable AND a power outlet because my battery will die before a movie is over. With the Transformer Prime, I can place it somewhere much easier because of size, the battery won't die, and the Tegra3 can decode high profile hi-def with ease.
Remember, everyone's usage patterns aren't the same as your own.

I just realized... since video decoding is done all on the companion core and the display is one of the biggest battery sucks on a device.... How many freakin' hours will this thing get pumping out video with its screen off*??

Or the simple answer of "I have videos in 1080p, because I like to watch them on my 1080p capable home hardware, and don't want to have to re-encode them to watch them on my tablet... I just want to throw them on and go."
The 1080p playback is the biggest reason I'm upgrading from a Galaxy Tab 10.1. I want buttery smooth video!
if you're buying the dock, you can also hook up a usb hard drive for some cheap (relatively cheap at least, with all the supply issues for hard drives going on right now) storage options.

I use exFAT for everything. exFAT is supported to read/write on Linux, Mac OS 10.6.5+, and Windows XP+.
Android supports it as well.

Thank you, the thread somehow morphed into defending the need for 1080p decoding, from the op's title: "Memory Cards" I do find it all pretty fascinating though, and since I recently upgraded to a nice 52" 1080p, I think this will be just the ticket for some occasional "can your tablet do this?" show & tell. Of course, now I have to go grab a nice micro HDMI cable after grabbing a mini HDMI for TF101 that I just sold. Thanks a LOT Asus, lol! No biggie though.
On the battery life issue, if my TF101 is any indication, you will not be looking for a power outlet anytime soon. With Keyboard dock attached, I would have benn able to watch 3-4 full length movies on a charge, no kidding here. What I really want to know, like a lot of folks is if exFat will work or not, else I will have to do Fat32, I imagine, since I live a a house of windows, Win Home Server, Media Center Server, and 3 laptops.
I hope the retailers have extra staff working when these start showing up via UPS & FedEx on people doorsteps, cause everyone who didn't receive their order will be on the horn: Where T F is my %[email protected]& Prime!!! LOL!
wait, this thing uses a micro hdmi? not the same as on the TF101?
crap, i need to go buy a new cable too!

Not sure which model choose (32Gb vs 16Gb+3G)

Hello everyone.
After reading lots of reviews and opinions and having the oportunity to use the tablet, im sure i want to buy a Sony Tablet S
Now comes the second decission to make.. ¿Which model? As the title of the post says, im between 32Gb or 16Gb+3G.
I know that whatever the model is, the space for installing apps are the 4GB partition and i think the apps that allow moving to Sd card, in this tablet means moving to the second partition but never to the external sdcard. So... Do you think the 4GB are enough for all kind of apps and games?
About the 3G conexion, thats something i will use mainly during travels. Instead of creating the hotspot with my mobile (and draining its battery), i'll change the SIM card to the tablet. Another option is buying a prepaid SIM with some data-plan to just use with the tablet during those travels, and when i dont have available wifi's.
A requirement would be to have access to music in the external sdcard, but allowing to reproduce a full album. I have the movies part resolved with the MxPlayer, but dont know any beauty music app which allow to do that
Well, any opinion or advice are welcome, so dont hesitate to post it !
Thank you in advance
I'd go with PowerAMP, it works beautiful. Might use WinAMP as well.
But I prefer PowerAMP myself. It can access the external sd-card without problems.

Thanks for your answer ^^
I think that PowerAMP is not free, but anyway, if is possible to access and reproduce lists and full albums from the external sdcard, my requirment is accomplished so...
¿What would be your choose, 16GB+3G or 32GB?
(Forgot to say in the first post that price difference between both models are just 20€ )
I suppose that you'll bring it around to work or travel, thus with 3G is a better option. And you can buy SD card for more storage and even cheaper.
Hope you will have your own choice. Cheers and welcome to this community

I'd go for the 16GB+3G if the difference is that little, then get yourself a nice SDXC 128GB sd-card and space won't be much of a problem. At least not external. However internal might be eaten after a while if you install to many apps hehe.
Yes I know PowerAMP cost a few $$$ but it's worth it. WinAMP cost too. THough both exist as free-versions for you to try. So you can get the feel for it.
I'd go with the 16GB+3G too. I miss the 3G from my old Galaxy Tab since I got a Wi-Fi version and with full-size SD card and USB storage capabilities, storage isn't a huge problem unless you install stupendous amounts of apps.
Thanxs for all the answers.
The usage of the tablet is not going to be for work, but i'll bring it in my own travels where i wont have available a 3G network since the cost of using it in other countries are so expensive
I also found a nice music player (Meridian player), which allow to reproduce lists from the external sdcard, so with MxPlayer and Meridian i got covered the multimedia part.
Im also planning to use the tablet for playing games from psn, gameloft and emulators, so what bothers me is that the 16GB version only have around 8.5GB in the usb storage and im quite sure that all this kind of games cant be installed in the external sd.
How much space does this games take up in the usb storage? I know that having 3G is a great option, but im almost deciding on the 32 version just for this reason

Most of the gameloft games I've seen have been about 250MB worth of SD card data (maximum, although there's been reports of them taking up to 1GB), so you'd still be able to fit plenty of stuff on there. If you're that worried about it, sure, get the 32GB, but I think it's more about how you're going to use it.
I myself went with the 16GB as I already have an additional 16GB SD Card.
I have a MP3 player that I keep most of my music on, I mostly keep movies on my tablet.

Same here. I bought the 16GB version, since I already have 16GB and 8GB SD cards handy. Plus, once I bought my USB OTG cable I just keep movies on a 16GB USB and transfer them to the SD card one at a a time. Works a treat for me.

That's cause the only ones available on the Tablet S are worthless P.O.S. compared to the ones unavailable.
Games such as backstab HD, NOVA 2HD, Modern combat 2 and 3, 9mm etc have pretty much 600mb minimum.
w/ full sized SD cards available, 32gb isn't necessary at all as we've confirmed up to 128Gb SDXC cards working.
16Gb is more than enough for app / games storage (how many 1Gb games do you play?) in my opinon, but of course consider your own usage scenario

HD Movie On Razr

I've tried to get a movie to my microsd card in order to have it in my Razr. The movie is about 5gb and i couldn;t copy it. I was getting error regarding FAT32. Is there a way to make my microsd card NTFS and be compatible with Razr(rooted)?
I doubt you will be able to get NTFS to be recognized by Android. Maybe try EXT3. Then the hard part is getting Win 7 to recognize the EXT3. Should work in a VM or possibly with ext2fsd (maybe install and run in XP mode)?
hmm?
why dont u stick the microSD to ur RAZR, and as long as the RAZR recognizes it, plug ur phone to ur Windows PC USB, select "USB Mass Storage", and drag-n-drop.

5GB is WAY too big for a movie, period. I have 2 TB of full length feature films and NONE of them are over 2GB in size and I watch them on a 60" LED TV.
So you need to re-encode that movie and any other movie you have to something more "NORMAL" for your intentions.
use a program called HandBrake, encode to .Mp4. If you're not familiar with this area of expertise I go read up on it.
another poster was right, FAT32 is 4GB limit. You can't format a MicroSD to NTFS.
Regardless, no video should be 5GB, unless you've combined all three Lord Of The Rings movies into one long 9 hour film, into one AVI container.. lol who would do that? >.>

I disagree. I have 2TB loaded up with Blu-Ray Rips (that I share on my network using PS3 Media Server). I rip then re-encode them to x264, 1080p, keep original frame rate, AC3 5.1 audio, in a MKV container. My file sizes are 8gb (so I can fit them on a dual-layer dvd that can be played and saved on a PS3). I found this to be the best final result. I have used Handbrake but I found better results with XVID4PSP.
If you can't see a difference between your rips and an original blu-ray then that's great for you but I'm sure most people would see a huge difference. There's no way to compress a movie that is 30gb in size to something smaller than 5gb without a huge drop in quality.

Some people don't want to reduce the quality by recompressing, or spend the time doing it. Storage is cheap, at least to me. Period. Exclamation point.

First if all this is a waste of time. There is no reason to play this file on your phone. Code the file in the resolution of the qhd display. You are not losing anything in the quality of the movie when it is displayed on your razr.

Bummer, think I remembered wrong, its only supported on android tablets.
Think there is a thread though to make it supported somewhere on XDA....
Anyways, if you want to watch it on your phone then rather re-code...but if you wanna movies on TV through an HDMI cable...its gonna be tough with fat32
I tried exFat with ICS on the Razr and it still doesn't natively support it. Shows the Damaged SD Card and prompts to format.
Bringing this back from the dead, did anyone find a work-around here? The 4GB file size limit is a bit of a pain for those of us doing 1080p rips to display via the HDMI out. I could put these files on the Nexus no problem, and this may be an area where Razr loses out big time.

I thought the razr HDMI out only supported 720p res, so While I agree with the concept (as I have several 1080p rips around 8 gigs myself) 1080 is simply more then the phone will output thru the HDMI.
I understand the problem, but I'm still a bit unsure as to *why* it's a problem. Why on Earth are you using your phone to output 1080p files to your TV? You spent $200-$600 on a phone to do something like this when you could spend under $100 to get a device that does it better, easier, and more effectively?
Get a cheap Roku or WD Live player. Hell, get an AppleTV and enjoy it. There's no way around the FAT32 limitation (none...at all), so look for another solution.
how about trying wireless transfer over wifi? (dunno if the 4gb limit still applies..) or perhaps a better way would be to try a file splitter n split it into half n once both parts have been transferred to memory card to join them back again??
hope it helps!!
I saw somewhere in RAZR forum ntfs.ko module to mount NTFS partition, I'm not sure if it's working with SD-CARD. It's compiled for 2.3.6 so I'm also not sure if it's work with ICS.
Just search for ntfs.ko

[Q] Galaxy S2 as a video player.

So i think it's time to upgrade my Xperia Arc to a better phone.
I think the S2 is the best that I can get with my currently available money, and it seems to tick all the boxes.
Only one thing concerns me, I use my Arc's HDMI A LOT (as in 2+ hours/day) for movies and such, but it's limits are quickly reached, so I want to know if the S2 is able to stream big (3-4 gb+) 1080p/720p MKV files on my TV without losing frames and without missing subtitles.
Also, is a 2.3 S2 more capable of playing such files than a 4.0+ S2? I ask this because from what I know ICS isn't very well optimized
Thanks in advance for any helpful answers!

Thanks in advance for any helpful answers!

yes s2 is capable of streaming 1080/720 MKV files for sure and 2.3 and 4.0.3 ar both good at it
btw, is the internal memory of the S2 NTFS or FAT32? i need to know this if i am to transfer 4+ gb files on it.
