Has anyone sucessfully done this with the One X+?
I was really hoping to be able to do this with my Nexus 7.
Yes, several times, have used both methods successfully but ultimately prefer to use Bluetooth...

I am stock on the HOX+, just using Settings > More > Mobile network sharing - then just enable portable Wi-Fi hotspot from there. You can enable BT tethering in the same place.

can turn on hotspot
My phone is rooted and running the stock HTC rom. but i am unable to turn on wifi hotspot from settings menu; it keeps saying call 611..
Well you are suppose to have it with your current data plan from your cell provider. 611 is to call and have it enabled.

whats the point of rooting then!
AT&T will ask for a special package of data plan to use tethering. my understanding was rooting the phone will let u circumvent that
AT&T Teathering
If you download system manager and go into the systems apps section, there will be an app called "teathering guard". If you dissable the event called something like "ATT UI" teathering will work without having to switch to a different data plan. I can upload screenshots if needed.
Can you post those screen shots? I downloaded system tuner, clicked events, system apps, found tether guard and disabled all of the events, rebooted and it still isn't working. Elegancia att.
Also, the app "WiFi tether" doesn't work either. It fails at 'setting ad hoc mode' and doesn't broadcast the ssid.

I've unlocked my Rezound and rooted it. I checked the root and its says "congratulations, you are rooted" With that said... I downloaded WiFi Tehter (just as I did with my last HTC Incredible) and tried to hook up my Motorola Xoom. The Xoom won't recognized the Rezounds Wifi but my wife's laptop will but then it won't get online. As a matter of fact, my daughter's IPhone can recognize the Rezound tether and get online.
I have tried every combination of settings to no avail and am willing to try ANYTHING at this point.
make sure you're set to 'Netd (master)' and not ad-hoc. Android devices don't like connecting to ad-hoc networks.

If so, it's under Menu, Settings.

are you sure you have root? http://download.chainfire.eu/204/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.zip flash this in custom recovery (i use amonRa) itll give you root on a stock or any rom. open superSU and update binary
download "root checker" from the app store (burrow apps)
start it up grant permission and be sure your rooted.
Also is your mobile data on? i know it sounds funny but i made this mistake before. no mobile data no tether but you can still connect.
also you need to be unlocked, on a custom recovery, and rooted.. i personally use an uninstaller to uninstall to the stock mobile hotspot app.. ive heard it interferes with the rooted apps.
Ok, Here's where I'm at:
On my HTC Rezound -
Device Profile - HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM)
Change Start Up Method - Netd (master)
Wifi Encryption - not checked
Change Channel - on channel 1 (2412 MHz)
Wifi-driver reload is checked
Enable Access-Control is not checked
Keep Alive is not checked
Shutdown Timer is not checked
Idle Shutdown is not checked
Quota Shutdown Limit is not checked
Lan-Network - 192.168.2.0/24
MSS Clamping is not checked
Routing Fix is checked
Preferred DNS - 8.8.8.8
Alt DNS - 8.8.4.4
And yes, the phone is rooted. I checked with the Root Checker program
On the Xoom:
Wifi is on
Advenced settings-
Network Notification - not checked
Keep Wifi on during sleep - Always
Wi-Fi Frequency band - Auto
Mac address - 40:fc:89:f6:b2:09
IP Address - 192.168.1.105
Bluetooth is off
The Xoom still doesn't see the Rezound.
Laptop doesn't see it either
So aggrevating!
I use the following settings on rezound for all roms. In WiFi tether:
#device profile: rezound
#set up: auto
#ssid: change it
#channel: 11
#routing fix: checked
I don't have internet so I actually use this app constantly for x-box live. WiFi tether has worked on every Rom I've flashed(all of them!). With the exception of aokp 1.1 which had WiFi issues

Got Titanium Backup Pro, however, cant find any tether guard app. to freeze. Sad that I get up to 18mbps down and 12mbps up on my EVO LTE running viper4g 3.1.6. On my Wi-Fi tether I tried all different settings, still my attached devices only get 0.56down and 0.7up.
Any info on how to sustain same or at least faster speeds on my attached devices would be appreciated.

I'm pretty positive it's an htc app for verizon. Here's a post on a thunderbolt that has it which explains it a bit.
http://www.thunderboltforums.com/forum/htc-thunderbolt-apps/7004-tethering-guard-2-3-4-a.html
If you google "tethering guard htc" there's a lot of info out there about it. Though if you don't have it I'd imagine there is something else creating a bottleneck for your bandwidth.
I'm using the latest version of open garden wifi tether on my rooted incredible 4g and the device profile is set to htc rezound. Encryption is WPA2-PSK, though it's set to auto. Tethered tablet got around 3Mbps dl, and 4 Mbps up on a test I just did, though it can vary.
Hope this helps.

Once again thank you for your follow up. I have the HTC EVO LTE running viperg3.1.6 Rom and I have sprint as a carrier. I will google the tether guard app htc . I'm sure the open garden works well but it needs a client app on each connected device. Sort of inconvenient when you want to lend your wifi to various devices and people as they all have to install open garden as well. Once gain thank you for your help. I'll let you know what I find on the tethering guard.

Ah, I thought you had a incredible 4g since this is under the incredible 4g troubleshooting section. Most likely tethering guard is something verizon makes htc put on their phones, so sprint may use another app, or another method. I believe one of the reasons an htc one phone isn't on verizon yet is because htc did not like the software verizon required them to put on their phones (don't hold me to that though).
Also I use "Open Garden Wifi Tether" (Labeled in the play store "WiFi Tethering" by open garden) not to be mistaken with "Open Garden" by open garden. The former requires root and does not require the app to be on both devices as it simply creates a mobile hotspot. I'd suggest giving it a try.
If your carrier blocks it in the play store here is a direct link for the apk that open garden provides in it's description on the play store:

Well I could not find Open Garden Wifi on the app store. Followed your link and was able to install the apk. App looks very much like the WiFi Tether I have just with a background wallpaper and less options in settings. Device profile does not list EVO LTE, used Samsung galaxy nexus (CDMA/LTE) which work fine with my wifi tether app, but I could not get Open Garden to broadcast at all, tried several setting, also noticed there are no settings for MSS clamping and Routing Fix to check on. Those I have to have checked in order for my WiFi Tether app to work.(So I went back to WiFi Tether 3.3 beta 2) and I have a hotspot again but still at 3g speeds. Really miffed cuz at my location I get up to 19MBPS down and 9.42 up. When I turn on my WiFi Tether my friends with IPhones or tablets get like 1.26down and about same up. I have to do some serious searching on this one. There is a newer version of WiFi Tether 3.3 beta3 but that app does not work at all. I rooted my EVO LTE mainly for the tethering function. I apologize if I posted in wrong forum btw (I get Forum Dementia) easy. and again thanks for your advices. I think I'll have to poke Team Venom about the Viperg 3.1.6 Rom I'm running. I also used Titanium Backup and looked for any kind of tethering guard but my search only produced the actual WIFi tether app. Nothing resembling tether guard. Again thanks for all your help.
I've heard that Foxfi doesn't work with the Droid DNA--is there any way to use turn this device into a mobile hotspot without having it pre-included in my data plan?
This is my first smartphone; I've been using my Nexus 7 and a dumb phone for the past few months now, and I felt I should upgrade to a smartphone since I'm not living on campus anymore. This seems like a great phone in and of itself, but I'd still like the option to tether my tablet. Any suggestions?
As long as you are rooted, you can use WiFi Tether For Root Users (yellow WiFi bars picture) and it will tether just fine. You won't need to include tethering in a data plan to use it.

I am seeing exactly the same issue. Numerous errors on starting, unable to tether. Or more precisely, other devices can see the hotspot and tether to it, but do not get Internet access.
My main problem is that my phone will show up as a device instead of a router (like it used to on my OG Incredible), thus not allowing other phones or tablets to connect to it because they don't see the connection. Laptops work find though. I use "wireless tether for root users" with the green signal symbol and not the newer version because the new one doesn't show the data speeds and total data used in the app.
I am using the latest yellow version and both my Galaxy Note and Lenovo laptop tether to it but do not get Internet access.
sorry for jumping on old post.
Just wondering. On my moto droidbrazr maxxbi did an sqlight hack to bypass the entitlement check and was able to use the stock hotspot app even though i was on unlimited data. Would a similar work around work for dna?

I installed SuperSU & BusyBox than was able to tether using Barnacle Wifi Tether~ it gave me an error for adhoc but I was able to click associate and use my 4g on an iPad.(Also checked external IPs & ran speedtests to confirm it was using 4G)
Not working for me. It gets stuck at "please wait while starting". And just spins. I can back out of it but nothing good happens.

You're definitely confused, so I'll help.... The ATT Hotspot app is to connect your phone to the wireless hotspot ATT provides for free at various locations so you don't use your data plan
Wireless tethering is to connect another device (laptop, WiFi tablet, another phone, etc) to use your data plan on your phone wirelessly, turning your phone into a router, receiving data and broadcasting an SSID like your WiFi at home / work does
Make sense?

hrmmm, i guess i need to figure that out... im new to att, just switched when getting this phone. all i know is i am on their mobile share plan with unlimited talk & text, then we pay for the 4g data plan. so maybe the fee is built into the 4gb share data plan.
edit: yea just did some reading and because i am on a mobile share plan there is no fee. i guess that solves y i was confused to begin with on why the op posted this option for free tethering when i can use the built-in for free to tether.
Is it possible to tether a rooted droid incredible 4g running the stock HTC Sense image that STILL has the unlimited data plan (I got the phone just before they killed it last summer)? I have a stock droid incredible 4g (Android 4.0.4) that I simply unlocked the bootloader on and installed/flashed SuperSU from TWRP. I apologize if my terminology is off as I am new to this. I have installed both WiFi Tether and FoxFi and have had no success with either program. I may be configuring something incorrectly or it may not be possible given I'm still on the unlimited data plan. I assumed that rooting my device would somehow allow Wifi Tether to bypass whatever verizon blocks on the unlimited data plans to prevent tethering. I have googled everything I can with regard to this issue and have attempted all the recommended fixes with FoxFi (rename the SSID, reboot the phone, disabled WiFi, etc...). I do not know how to configure Wifi Tether (tried the defaults and a few combinations I found on google) and have found very little to assist further with it. There are multiple device-profiles and setup-methods to choose from in addition to a bunch of other options, and am hoping someone know specifically what I can do or have a combination that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Simplified Questions:
(1) Is it possible to teather on a droid inc 4g with unlimited data?
***These Questions assume '1' above is true***
(2) Can this work in FoxFi, if so, how do I configure it?
(3) Can this work in Wifi Tether, if so, how do I configure it?
(3a) In Wifi Tether, I would need it set up to do a 'hotspot' not an ad-hoc network connection, no clue how to do this...
(3b) In Wifi Tether, which device-profile and setup-method should be used?
(3c) There are a number of options in WiFi Teather, which ones should be selected?
Solved
I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...
Simple, if your on a sense based ROM just use open garden https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=og.android.tether
And in settings select either generic ICS or rezound I forget its been a while but I know it works flawlessly
On cm which I am just use the built in tethering very simple
I use WiFi Tether (currently using 3.2-beta2). Works great. Fast, no drops, etc.
While I am running ViperLTE, I see no reason why it won't work with rooted stock.
In fact... I'm using it right now

Which wifi-tether app are you referring to? From which author... As there are many different apps in the store. Thx
I also suggest freezing mobile hotspot and tetheringguard using titanium backup.

I believe the full title is "WiFi Tether for Root Users". For some reason, it seems to appear and disappear from the Google Play Store at random.
The best place to find it is at the code project home here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

i still don't seem to have gotten past the throttling... i have frozen these apps with not apparent change.
tethering works - i just don't get the same speed results when comparing my phone vs laptop. :dunno: i also note my area doesn't seem to have very fast 4g speeds compared to results i see posted on the internet.

I have found that signal strength/area is everything when it comes to speeds - tethering or otherwise. At work, I have intermittent 4G and my tethering speeds are so-so. I have to carefully put my phone in the right spot to get 4G, and that spot varies depending on the weather...
However, at home my signal and 4G are rock solid. 4G speeds, including tethering, are faster than my WiFi connection.
hey

I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...

Thanks - I'm on Viper 2.2.0 and this is what worked for me. Before I updated the ROM a few weeks ago, I was able to use the older settings with the generic ICS profile and without Wifi-driver reload.

I also have the Inc 4G Lte and just loaded Viper LTE 2.2.0
Using the above settings, I still can't get it to work. It runs and my other devices can see it and connect to it but there is no traffic.
Anybody got any ideas.
