[Q] Software update vs country of purchase - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
I am confused with this problem that I have: I bought Samsung Galaxy S3 international version GT-i9300. Now, I live in Australia. My question is, when I go to my phone to check software update or Samsung Kies to check software update, which will be visible/show up/ be downloaded to my phone? The latest version for International SGS3 OR the latest version for Australian SGS3?
Confusing isn't it?
So long story short: when there is a new update, which one is it? Is the software/firmware update based on the country of purchase (In this case, international version) or where I am living (Australia)?

Well i was told to post in the questions forum so that is what I did

you hit "report" on your post and ask for it to be moved

Alright my apologies, I am the noob.
So, just making sure, because I still do not quite get it.
I will simplify this question even more. When there is asoftware update for my SGS3, which one will my phone download? The international software update(Because my phone is international) or will my phone download the australian software update(Because I live in australia)?

Still need help with this.

It will download the update that is in line with your firmware code. If you use an Australian firmware it will be the update for this Australian firmware once it is released.

Thanks mate
Well, so it is based on my phone, NOT the country I am living in?
Mine is internatinal version GT-i9300, so when there is an update, my phone will download that one, and the Australian update is irrelevant for me?

It is not so much the intentional but the firmware Version, e.g. uk, Australian etc., you can find it under settings about phone. If your firmware is e.g. The uk version and stock you will get UK otas.

This is firmware versions and you could normally expect that the newest (highest number) always is the one to bet your money on ^^
So XWKE7 is the latest firmware upgrade?
How come kies shows I'm up to date with firmware XWKE2?

There is nothing wrong with your new baby...
What you experience now can be compared to the feeling you could have if you suddenly thought there was something wrong with your new chick and everybody else had an upgraded and better one..
Relax and chill down.. Your new girl is just fine ^^
What you could do is to ask yourself if you want to tickle her under the “hood” or wait for the official fix every new girl will get later anyway..

Hello, I have a 2 doubts: my samsung galaxy s2 is factory unlocked. My first question is: how to see the current firmware into my phone? - Where I can find the latest firmware (XWKE7 - to update via Odin) ?
The second question is: To overclock my samsung galaxy s2(factory unlocked) is necessary and required to root your phone??.
Thanks, regards
so, shall i take it that these are not official updates ?? If so, i am relaxed. But forgive me for the question but i am only a blond girl ).. : i am reading that there are many updates after my version.. and why i am told on kies that 'this device will not get the update.. and at the same time they say that there ARE new updates.. And one more question : when i get ( if I) my update, will it be to the next version .. or it will be to the last one? because my version is very old ... ( xwdc) Thank you for the answer in advance ))))

These ARE official updates.
This all depends on your carrier. If you are on O2, for example, you will not yet see KE7 in KIES as it hasn't cleared with O2 yet (probably).
What you can do, and the instructions are in the 'Development' section of the forum, is remove the O2 branding from your phone. Your phone is then just 'generic' i.e. it hasn't been modified by O2. This means you get the updates as soon as Samsung release them!

Update path one official via Kies requires the phone provider to update the firmware from Samsung and upload to Kies server . Kies update is to latest version phone provider has uploaded .
Path two are Samsung stock roms that we flash ourselves via Odin .
As this may debrand your phone it may and i repeat may effect the warranty from the seller but not Samsungs warranty .Two the upgrade path via Kies may be closed and updates are now stock roms via Odin .

thank you for the answer. I bought my phone from Amazon . uk. , unlocked.. how could i know who is the phone provider???

Its probably generic then you try Kies for an update .No update on very old firmware i would try Samsung Service centre .

:-(( what if my phone is 'generic'? does it mean that i will never get any update ??.. And i really tried Kies.. but i was told that there is no update for my device... Please tell me what does ' generic' mean?.. sorry to be a nuisance .. but i am new at these ...and want to learn ... Unfortunately there is no samsung service in our country .. [Q] Carrier Branded ROM?

Hello, I would like to know if there's someone that has the carrier branded ROM for Movistar (Peru). My galaxy's vibrator stopped working so I need to claim its warranty.
I know Infratech might get it, but since I have less than 10 posts I can't ask for it in the Original Development Forum where his "carrier branded roms" post is located...
But if anyone got it please let me know,
Thanks in advance.
Also, after rebranding the phone and using the jig to reset the custom firmware counter the phone should be ready to take if back the dealer right?

You should be able to use the one from Argentina (UHKG7) just fine. Looks like it's the same version as the latest one for Peru.
Carrier branded firmware here & country specific non-branded firmware here, or if you're after the latest firmware for your carrier/phone/country try Checkfus (search for it on here).
Thanks MistahBungle, but the one I'm looking for is not listed there, and I cannot request it there because I still have less than 10 posts, I'll try to get to it without making nonsense posts.

In that case, use the one from Columbia, which is UHKE5. It's also the closest listed country for Movistar to Peru geographically anyways, so it's probably from the same batch.

Cool, I tried with checkfus and found there's a newer firmware,
This is how I got my phone:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKLSAM
Phone Version: I9100UHKE3
PDA Version: I9100UHKE5
CSC Version: I9100SAMKE2
and it says the latest firmware for SAM is:
PDA: I9100UHKG7
CSC: I9100SAMKG1
Phone: I9100UHKG4
I can't download CheckFus to download it because the sites tells me that no hotlinking is permitted and keeps sending me back to the homepage, so I'll search for CheckFus elsewere and try to get that firmware.
Ok, it is downloading right now, thanks for your help, after it finishes I'll flash it and use the jig to reset the counter, as far as I know it will be ready to take it back,
Any recomendations for making a backup of my phone as it is right now? Thanks again.

A Nandroid. But I think you'd need to root it again to do so.
Hello RaulGuichard,
Please could you post the site where you find the firmware. I'm looking for it but no lucky.

What is the original stock firmware my phone came with before flashing?

A simple question but i couldn't find the answer. I flashed my i9300 but i have no idea weather it came with UK, Dutch or Dutch Vodafone firmware. Is there any way to find this out?
Als is there any way a service center can look it up through your serial number or imei?
A similar thread about this for the I9100 / SII went unanswered.

If you dont know then outside of asking Samsung all you can do is guess .
Some say Kies will give original firmware .Tools Firmware upgrade and initialization .
jje
Why don't you flash one that's for your country? It doesn't matter for Samsung warranty if that's the case because once it's their software they don't ask questions.
Mine came with a Dutch firmware, it's a 32 GB and I flash Cyanogenmod over it.
Try http://androidfirmwares.net and look for Galaxy S3 Roms.

After i rooted and then updated through Kies, it did reset the Device status from modified to normal, but let's not confuse that with getting the firmware of the original locale/provider. Kies update didn't change the firmware. So either i already had the original firmware, or it just updates.

That's very reassuring and just what i wanted to hear
The reason i'm not sure what the original firmware is, is that in the past, two of my preordered android phones had UK firmware (probably because the UK shipped a few weeks earlier). On top of that this is my first phone with a contract (subsidized) but from a website (gsmweb) rather than the provider. So the firmware could be UK, Dutch or Dutch Vodafone afaik...
Either i have the right firmware, or Kies just reads the current firmware, not the origingal. If i ever flash another firmware, i'll check if Kies still says this (Dutch, unbranded) is my original firmware.

LH1 is a recent firmware so if your phone is older than a few months its not the original .
((Some say Kies will give original firmware ))
like i said some say that .
But i have no evidence that they are not getting a Kies report based on the HDSWVER in the windows registry .I could test as i know my original firmware but KIES is not a product i use .

Which Country Gets Fastest Updates?

Hello!
My friend's I9300 is still stuck on Android 4.0.4 build number IMM76D.I9300JKBLH3.
I want to flash him an updated version using ODIN. I want it to be from the country that get updates the fastest, so he would always be updated as he don't know how to use ODIN, and he is afraid.
So, what is the best build to flash right now?
He needs Hebrew to be available for the stock keyboard. No need for full UI translation.
Thanks!
No country gets fastest update .
All you can say is Europe generally in front of the rest of the world .
Exact roll out varies .
Hebrew would be your first item for a firmware version .

I mean first to be released, and not fast as Google...
So any European version will be good? Which one would you recommend?
Thanks!
There is not faster countries than other, but in general Europe countries get updates first.
Any country will be good.
Im using 4.1.2 from Israel (PDA:I9300XXELL4 CSC:I9300OJKELK9)
Poland was the first one to release Jellybean (4.1.1)
But wasn't the first one to release 4.1.2
Is your friend from Israel too?
Cause Israel already released 4.1.2

Why laggy? They are 3 Versions: 1 for unbranded and 2 for branded phones.
I think they all both the same. The difference are only the branded apps.

[Q] Can i flash a Rom from another country ?

Hello,
long time no see!
Just want to confirm if it's still the same case or anything changed.

Is it possible or has SAMSUNG changed anything in their policies that makes it impossible? Used to be possible with Odin.

The only noticable difference is the CSC version, each country has a different CSC and thus different bloatware, but that doesn't mean you can't flash another country's firmware that will work except with different preloaded software.
Apart from that try to pay attention to the "Changelist" number which is the build number (So higher means newer). When Samsung releases a firmware for a specific device some countries get a new build number while the others won't. So flash a firmware which has the highest "Changelist" number.
How can I check the "Changelist" number of the firmware?
