[Q] Manually backup & restore SMS - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a pretty much stock S3, unrooted, etc. I broke the screen. I'm trying to backup my files so I can restore to my new S3. Kies sucks, it keeps timing out.
All I really want is my text messages (contacts, cal, etc are synced with Google, I'll just redownload all my apps). I can access the file system to download files from the phone via Kies (I've pulled all my pictures off the phone). Is there a way to pull the text message db off the phone too?
I was hoping there is a single file on the system somewhere with all the texts and I could simply copy that to my computer and then copy that to my new S3 in the same location...

Sorry, I've spent hours searching around. Wasn't really able to find anything conclusive. Wouldn't I need access to my phone in order to install Titanium Backup Pro? The LCD screen is broken.

you're in a tough situation.
its a bit difficult situation.
im not sure if using a hdmi output device would help?

[Q] Viber messages backup anyone?

Can any of the Viber users or soft dev guru help on this little problem.
I love Viber and I love my SGS2, now after few months of owning and learning, I want to start playing around specifically changing my Rom and what not.
Now my problem is i have 13,000+ exchange messages with my GF on viber and I really wanna keep it, as i understand that when I change my Rom I have to do a data wipe and all. I know there's a backup/restore function but is there a guarantee that i can restore Viber with all the messages still there?
Can someone provide a walk around? I have tried google for solution and used the search here but there was nothing except the android team saying its something that they "might" incorporate in the future - that's backing up of the messages.
I hope other users are on the same ship with me here. thanks in advance...
It is posible via Titanium backup, but you need get root on your SGS2 first.
On a rooted phone copy the /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages file to sd-card or whatever.
After new install, put the file back, make sure it has the right permissions and do a compleate restart of Viber.
Done and done.
(Its very lazy of Viber to not include a backup-functionality of messages, as this is SQLite databases that could very easily be dumped out to disc and imported)

I have the same problem with backup and restore old Viber messages. I managed to backup (or rather email messages history) from my old HTC Desire but could not restore them on my new Samsung S3). What's the use of backup without restore function?
Oh! I can't find /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages on SD card too. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Copying the database doesn't work for me. Here's what happens:
When I make a fresh installation of viber and replace the empty (fresh) /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages database file with my backup (old) one, viber crashes every time I launch it. I was careful to set permissions to rw- rw- --- as the fresh file has them.
What can I do - maybe export the records in the backup db file and reimport them into the fresh one?
If the previous question has no easy answer, at least can someone tell me what's happening so I can try to figure out an alternative approach?
Hello,
I've successfully backuped and restored Viber on my S III but I've got an issue with contact names: it randomly picks another contact name instead of the real one.
Anybody had the same issue? How did you solve it?
thanks!

I have the exact same problem. Once upon a time, I had an older version of the software saved on TiBu which I was able to restore and the messages stayed to the right person. Unfortunately, I don't have that version or backup anymore. I just downloaded another older version of the software from a thread here on XDA and I'm about to install it and see if it fixes the messages list problem...
Update: That version wouldn't open on my phone, it just FCed (could be because I'm running the vzw jellybean leak). Off to search for another version...

The file on the phone is an SQL Lite database.
Probably you could copy it to your PC, import the data, copy it back and have the database repaired.
I just restored the whole "com.viber.voip/databases" folder, and it works perfectly. all messages etc are there.
Hello I also have a problem with backuping my Viber messages.
Today I've done a software update. I'm using Samsung I9105P (SGS II+ with NFC). The update was from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. I did a normal copy of data\data\com.voip.viber\ and full app+data backup with Titanium Backup.
So this is what happens:
Everytime I restore data with Titanium the app starts normally and then I'm always asked to type in my phone number and the activation code. Before doing that all messages do exist. I know that because I am able to close these dialog windows with "back button" and look on the messages but I'm unable to normally use viber (I mean send and recieve msgs). After applying the activation code the message tab appears without any message. It happens like this everytime.
I also tried to just paste the "databases" folder or just the "viber_messages" file but both of these actions end with appcrash and then i need to reinstall it or just back up data with titanium (and then it's all the same as I wrote above - I mean activation code etc.).
I have several thousands of messages and I don't really want to lose them. Especially looking on the fact, that I've restored up my viber messages for a few times when I've been using Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) and also transferred them on this phone.
Any ideas for a solution? I'd be grateful. :fingers-crossed:
Same problem here! I can see the messages at first (after restoring APK + data from titanium or mybackuppro), but Viber wipes them when it asks me to reactivate. This whole thing is a mess. Anyone know a possible solution? I also have lots of messages that are important and I would like to restore.
I have exactly the same problem with the one the two last users are dealing with.
As soon as i got updated to Android 4.3 and restored Viber and its data with Titanium Backup, the first time i run Viber i can see my messages for 1 or 2 secs and then activation screen appears. After finishing app's activation i can't see my messages anymore..

If you have a titanium backup, unzip the backup file and extract the viber_messages file and replace the one in /data/data/com.viber.voip/databases/viber_messages by root browser. It worked for me.

Have the exact problem with TB and activation process, messages are gone after activation, but i have the solution that worked for me:
In TB folder find com.viber.voip-(some numbers).tar archive
open \data\data\com.viber.voip\.\databases
find both "viber_messages" AND "viber_messages_journal" files
copy them to \data\data\com.viber.voip\databases on the phone
change permission for viber_messages to RW RW --
change permission for viber_messages_journal to RWX RW --
restart phone and that's it, you will have all your messages

You can do this with ES file explorer, just go to settings/display settings/ and tick "show hidden files", great program and it's free :good:
Got my messages back, but the photos/doodles are not displayed in the chat-thread. empty images. when you click on them to view them bigger, they are displayed.
any idea how to get the thumbs in chat back?
Try to reboot phone, or delete cache in settings/applications/viber. For me everything is ok.

[Q] Transfer SGS2 data and Factory Reset

Good Afternoon All,
I have just bought a new SGS2 White and I already have SGS2 Black.
My question is
how do I copy every thing from my old SGS2 to new SGS2.
How can I remove all my data and factory rest my old SGS2.
The old SGS2 was T-Mobile UK branded but I installed UK Unbranded Firmware on it..So
Does Factory rest reverts it to T-Mobile Firmware
Do I loose root.
Just backup with titanium or something and save on your sd card... put that sd card in your new phone - restore...
Sync contacts to google - any particular data your referring to?
Factory reset will wipe all data etc - if you want stock firmware etc flash a stock rom
If your rooted im sure you could figure out how to reset - if not - google will have the answers if you search
Edit - could also be done through nandroid too if you have cwm etc
Note - don't restore system apps!!!! will cause problems
Just out of curiosity, with regards to not restoring system apps. Is there no way to restore everything to a new device, ala iTunes and an iPhone? I don't need to do this, but I always assumed you *could*.
1) To copy your old SGS2 to your new SGS2, do a Nandroid/CWRecovery backup of your old one & copy this backup to your external SD card, root your new one, put the SD card in and restore the backup of your old phone to your new phone with CWRecovery.
2) Flash a stock rom, do a factory reset.
3) No. You want T-Mobile firmware back on it, you need to find T-Mobile firmware and flash it (hint: search on here). If you flash stock firmware back onto your phone, yes you'll lose root.

Why would you need to restore system apps? Sms' can be backed up, contacts and calender and mail can go with you to any phone thanks to being synced with google...
You can use nandroid but make sure you have the same version you are restoring from and to - i personally don't think it's too much hassle to set up a phone again - full wipe flash and im back to normal in 30 mins
Oh, I agree, it's very little hassle. I've been across several roms and backed up certain applications but almost always started fresh. Which is why I had to ask, I've never had to do that kind of restore before. I just find it interesting that a full restore like that can't be accomplished in the same way that you can with an iPhone. Thanks for the info though.

Contacts will move the second you sign into your google account. They are synched to google automatically. Messages you will either need to use Titanium Backup, or something like SMS Backup+. (which backs up your SMS to your GMail account, and can restore from there as well) Game save data, you will need Titanium Backup.

Depends on what you want. Titanium is for individual apps. CWM recovery can do the whole phone.

That isn't always true. I would strongly recommend confirming that your Google account is configured to sync your contacts. Some people disable that and then don't realize, and lose their contacts. Better safe than sorry.

Sms folder?

Can someone tell me where the "physical" folder of the sms'es are located? I need to do a recovery on a galaxy s2...The bloke deleted his sms'es, now i'm trying to recover the lost info...

Based on Root Explorer search
Doing a search for sms found this file on my phone - /data/user/0/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
I can't say for sure if this is it, but that database sure has all of my sms in it
As I'm sure you will also recommend that your friend does future backups of his sms, I thoroughly recommend SMS Backup & Restore. It has worked well for me for a long time, and automatic backups are very easily scheduled

Think what i'll do, is download sms backup and restore....backup my sms'es...and see what the backup file is called...hopefully it will give me an idea where to search (for future ref)...thx for the tip
One thing i DID notice though, is that the "internal" storage, is actually called SDCARD? what a way of naming an internal storage. If i think about INTERNAL storage, its def NOT called an SDCARD...rather call it intstorage, or something like that....it will def confuse people...as we all accept the word SDCARD as a device you plug INTO th cell...and not a build in device...

If you want to backup your sms when switching from a stock samsung rom to another install Titanium Backup from the store (it's free). Find something called [SMS/MMS/APN] and do a backup.
After you install another samsung rom (with wipe), you can just open Titanium and restore Data from the save you made. Make sure you go inside the sms app first and untick 'Delete old messages'. Do a reboot and youre done.
If you are interested in adding new sms messages to your samsung rom (when you used cm9 for example, use Sms Backup and Restore, it's also free on the store). Do a reboot. Save your sms/mms with titanium and youre done.
I havent found a way to transfer mms messages between samsung and cm9/aosp/aokp roms yet.

I guess that you are aware of this but ... just in case ...
The internal storage that you are calling "sdcard" is only partly correct. If fact sdcard is below the top level root. So, sdcard is actually /sdcard, and the data directory where I found the database is /data (not on sdcard, but off the root directory). To get to this you need a rooted phone, and a file explorer like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer.
Sorry if you already knew this, but the sdcard thing was quite confusing to a newby like me before I had done quite a bit on the rooted phone.

Contacts Recovery after Rooting

Hi all, I was on an unrooted 2.3.3 standard rom, I then rooted, made a full backup and an apps backup using titanium. I then flashed to Ressurection Remix 1.8.1 and noticed that my contacts did not come back. I thought with a full backup and apps backup that the contacts would be backed up, but I am not sure If I have now lost them or what I can do to get them recovered, can anyone help ?
If I recovered my full backup, would that have my contacts in it ?
If you had signed in using Google account, sign in again and you're contacts will be available.... Unless you set the option specific to phone only

Nandroid backup is full image of rom .
Kies backup of contacts or Google synced or restore from Sim card .

It's bordering on a question and a request for assistance. I'm sure a moderator will move it if its in the wrong place.
TB makes a backup of apps, but I have noticed (after the event) that it will also backup contacts if you manually select it to. Why this isnt turned on by default is baffling.
The Nandroid backup is not a backup then, its a rom backup. That was my mistake for thinking it was a backup of the phone.
I dont use Kies, or google or store contacts on sim. I take it I have lost my contacts completely now then and no way of getting them back ?
Would a data recovery program be able to read the phones internal memory as a drive ? You would think there is something it could recover ?
The file recovery program RECUVA free ware is worth a try or you could open a Nandroid backup .
Nandroid is an image of the phone rom in full including contacts .

thanks thats encouraging and good to know, I'll have a play around with it tonight when I get in from work.
RECUVA wouldnt see the phone memory. Nandroid backup let me look at the backup that was made, I saw the contacts.apk but even after I saved it to a location (I did this several times) I went to the location and it didnt show. I even tried to install but it says there was a contacts list there and wouldnt let me overwrite.
I did a full recovery and now all my contacts are back. I will make several backups of these hehe. I don;t want that to happen again.
Thanks for the help.

You can use Titanium Backup to restore your contacts. You have to backup everything first (user applications and system data), flash your new ROM, reinstall TB.
At this point, you can restore your contacts: just open TB and search the backup list for something like "[Contacts....]......" with green title. Restore it (data only), reboot and you should see your contacts.
All the "[something]" items in green are settings and data. Contacts, wireless networks, bookmarks, and so on.
I use this procedure for every new ROM.
Only problems found: restoring SMS/MMS from GB to ICS doesn't work (for me, at least).
Good Luck
You can recover lost contacts from Samsung Galaxy after rooting. To do this, connect your Galaxy phone to your laptop and use a Samsung Contact Recovery program to be able to view the deleted files in the task window. After this, click on the ones that you want to recover.

[Q] Kies Backups?

Hi,
My first post to the forum, long time lurker but now I actually have a question or two.
I have a samsung galaxy s3 (blue, 16GB), it is totally stock, has the XELLA update as well.
Whilst reading the thread regarding dying S3's, it got me thinking about my own S3 and what I'd do if it died.
Of course, I have Kies and MyPhoneExplorer, I use both to do the same task that the old Nokia PC Suite used to do (I've come from Nokia S60 phones).
My concern is, despite backing up via Kies, I read in the above thread, that Kies shouldn't be used for backup as it doesn't do a 'proper' backup.
(I've tested Kies backups myself and didn't spot a problem, but I've never tried to factory reset my phone and then restore everything from Kies)
Given that I do not want to install custom ROMs or root my phone in any way, is Kies suitable for backups or should I be using something more comprehensive?
If I should use something else - what should I use?
Ideally I want software that sits on the PC itself and backs up to my local drive, I don't really want something that sits on the phone unless it's really good.
Ideally, all I want is some useful software that allows me to backup my phone content, SMS/MMS/Contacts/Apps/App Settings/Phone Settings, maybe music and ringtones too. Most other parts (such as calendars/notes) are sync'd from a local Outlook install so these get overwritten upon sync anyway.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Whilst I'm grateful for the suggestion, I don't want to root my phone. Especially as it works perfectly well as-is. I'm happy to keep it as stock, however if you're telling me that the only way to get good, reliable backups of everything with my phone is to root it, then that doesn't bode well.
Why include software with a phone that suggests it can backup the phone, when in-fact it cannot.
i came from Nokia e72 with symbian s60 too. Kies backup is not up to my expectations. And myphoneexplorer is fiddly with its backup function. I was reluctant before rooting my phone, but I'm happy that I did it with cf auto root, it allows me to use titanium backup which is very good.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you've been lucky enough to get a kies backup, that'll do. I never got that far (and my s3 died)
I can't really root either Would love to. Rooted my desire the second it wasn't my primary phone. Barclays banking and sky go are two apps which don't like rooted phones and I squarely blame them, app-security shouldn't be compromised by root access. Nevermind, so I'm in your shoes too...
While ensuring my wifes (already swapped S3) doesn't lose anymore data if it goes again (hurry up fix).. it got me thinking about what she'd really loose and it's not that much...
Apps (can be re-downloaded). Your kies backup should have got the appdata (I can't be sure of this). Edit: I have successfully backed up many apps data settings without kies by using an 'adb' backup. You just need the Android sdk. Not all apps can be backed up this way (it also allows you to violate settings in their sqlite dbs), better than nothing though.
SMS (can be backed up using many Play Store apps)
Contacts/Chrome bookmarks are all stored by google
Kies can be used to ensure your Internal Memory doesn't contain any photos/music/movies/downloads that you want to keep (copy to sd)
Alot of apps which stored data on the internal storage were manually copied/pasted to an sdcard folder for safe-keeping.
and then there's probably not a whole lot else that you can't configure via system/in-app settings to avoid using internal storage and opt for sdcard/online instead.
I haven't got my phone back yet so I don't know what i've yet lost... don't want to think about it, at least wifeys happy that if hers goes (again) she wont loose much of value.
Edit2: A helpful XDA member detailed the adb (whole system) backup process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351
What I was looking for, was a single application or tool that would backup the entire phone, absolutely everything ideally.
But I suspect I won't be able to do that without rooting the phone, and even then - the backup application itself would probably need to be ON the phone and couldn't necessarily backup to the computer itself (unless I copied the backup from the SD memory to hard disk).
I know the old nokia software did back up pretty much everything and I'm sure Kies backs up pretty much everything, but if my phone were to die or be lost somehow, I want the ability to restore the backup entirely and be back to where I was (or as close as possible), so I don't need to set up apps again or their settings or set the phone settings back up etc.
Is all of that asking too much? (I use an equivalent of Ghost on my PC to back it up, that covers literally everything, just wondering if I can do a similar task with my phone)

+1. It does seem like a glaring omission. I've never gotten Kies backup to complete successfully.
What do u want to backup?
Sync contacts with google. Save ur DCIM photos in a new folder named I9300 and music and other stuff from sdcards
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

What I'm now doing is a Kies backup and an ADB backup as documented in a link earlier in this thread.
The Kies backups come in at around 270-290MB each, but the ADB backups come in at around 1GB each, so am wondering if perhaps doing an ADB backup once a month would be a better idea.
At least that way, I'm pretty much covered in the event of device failure or theft
Appreciate you confirming your backup approach. As with any new backup method, of course, it pays to test your restore strategy before you really need it
Good luck and if you do manage to do a test restore, let us know how it goes.
PS: I hadn't mentioned it because it conflicts with your (imo very reasonable) goals, but, the only backup I've ever fully trusted is the nandroid backup(s) I have of my rooted desire That's as close to a 'ghost' image as possible.

So a nandroid backup would literally clone everything as some kind of dump file?
I've told the ADB backup to cover shared storage as well as storing all APKs (excluding system ones), but what strikes me as odd is that my internal memory has used around 1GB and SD memory is around the 600MB mark, yet the backup is only 1GB.
I'm hoping between a monthly of ADB and a weekly Kies, I'll be able to get 90% of my phone back in operation if anything were to happen to it.
It's the same kind of strategy I use on my PCs here at home, except with them I know I can literally take a 'copy' of the entire system, including data.
I know the Kies restore works, but I don't know if the ADB does, I guess I should try it at some stage. Maybe when I do my next Kies backup
Question
I want to know if I back up all my data with kies from s3 (4.1.2) after that i update the phone can i restore the saved data with kies?
So i want to update the phone via odin so i have to do a factory reset and all the wipe, that would delet all my stuff so i saved the data i need, after update can i restore to the phone if the data i saved was from s3 (4.1.2) and the restoring woud go to s3 with 4.3 jellybean?
