This sounds like it should be simple enough, turning gadgets off is kinda a fundamental skill!
However, the problem that I have is that whilst my lumia turns on, the screen doesn't! This could be a faulty screen, but I want to try a recovery to rule out a software issue first as this is easier.
But as the scrren is off I can't seem to get it to power off! I want to get into USB recovery mode (power off - volume up - plug in USB) but just can

Hi,
This is about my Samsung Vibrant. I flashed a new rom onto it and after the regular installation the screen turned black and would not turn back on. Like nothing works. No lights, no anything, like the power button hasn't even been touched.
Is my phone bricked? Is there any fix to this?
Thanks
what do you mean black screen? as in no power at all? Even when charging the phone?
Yeah. Like it looks like the phone is off. Just black
have you tried removing the battery then going to DL mode?
I've tried all three button combinations.
Removing the battery and then holding the two volume buttons and inserting the battery then pluging it into my computer.
Nothing seems to work. The phone is unresponsive and the screen remains black the whole time. The four lights on the bottom of the screen don't even light up.
Hmm, let's wait for the others but i think....
Guide in signature should help
2. Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
3. Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
4. Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
5. As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
6. You should be in Download Mode.
This is under the NO-BOOT phones.
I tried and it doesn't put it into download mode. If I can get it back to download mode it would be golden.
I think they've rigged things to force download mode haven't they?i don't know if it will help but it might be worth a shot
Still flashing , thanks to odin
Check my guide under the troubleshooting section, it should have a link to the "Soldering Method" and THAT will force it into DL mode.
But I'd advise you to CAREFULLY follow my steps again before spending time and money on the soldering methdo x) Just a thought

So...... yeah
So I've gotten the hard reset bug, and I'm working on fixing it up myself. (RM-821 Telstra AU)
I've got nokia care suite all setup and ready to go, but the phone WON'T FLASH.
When it comes up asking me to hold down the buttons etc etc etc I hold power and volume down, press the retry button, wait for the vibration, take my fingers off power and volume down and put my finger on volume up.
By my phone just goes back into the lightning bolt/gear mode thing.
One thing I've noticed is that after the vibration my computer does the dundundun USB connection sound that usually means the USB device inserted isn't understood, instead of the dunDUN one that usually means success. (weird explanation but I think it works)
Thanks for any help, guys. I really need to get this thing going again.
Edit:
One extra piece of information would be that if I try to let it boot normally now, it shows the unsufficient battery icon after the carrier symbol. If I leave it there while chargin though, it eventually goes as far as the black NOKIA screen and won't charge.
Hi All,
Had a standard Nokia Lumia 920. Did a reset on the phone and it got stuck on the gears screen, so I left it over night. Woke up to find phone off. Started it up and went to Nokia logo then the 3 network logo and then nothing so I plugged it in and downloaded Nokia software updater for retail and it started to update the phone. but failed about half way through, went to try again and now the phone will not turn on. I have left it all night plugged in to a wall charger. Tried power + volume down, power + volume down + camera trick and nothing, no vibration.
If I plug it into my laptop sometimes it will come up and say "USB has malfunctioned"
Has anyone got any ideas/suggestions.
thanks in advance
Crampo
Hold power button for at least 15 seconds, Other than that its a return to Nokia job.
I am having the same problem before then I switch to samsung galaxy nexus, and I work well all the time.
basic rule: if phone turn off because battery, dont try and try turning on because mighty be bricked... plug charger, (and if not turning on) wait 5 minutes and do soft reset (Volume minus and power button together)
if phone bricked use this solution

NCS or NSU for retail.. is same thing but NSU is easier and more for beginners
Similar Problem
I have the same problem with my Lumia 920 - RM 821.
Already tried all the tools of Nokia, but without results, no vibrate and no image.
My Lumia has stopped completely and I can not fix it.
I believe my phone is broken and I need to return for warranty repair. But wanted to describe it here and see if there are any suggestions and advice.
I was charging on an airplane and I tried "chopping" moto-action to turn on the flashlight and it didn't work. I thought that was strange so I disconnected my phone from the power and reset it.
It did not go past the boot screen. I tried holding down power + volume down and it enters the other screen, and I tried scrolling down to enter recovery mode, but when I hit the power button on that selection it goes to the boot screen and stays there again.
If I try to plug it in, it no longer even responds to pressing and holding the power button + volume down anymore, I have to unplug it for it to respond.
I have tried charging it from the wall, and I only use the motorola provided cord and block.
The phone, even after being plugged in and charging (the motorola symbol on the back lights up when plugged in to indicate it's charging), does not actually charge.
When I enter to the other screen it now shows 0% battery warning.
What can I do? I live in the US but this phone was purchased in the UK, so US motorola support will not help me. I'm worried I will have to mail my phone to the UK for repairs, and their live-chat is not active during the same waking hours as the US so I am using my backup phone, but this really sucks...

I guess the only thing you can try is to flash stock firmware on your device search the firmware on google according to your baseband and use adb method to flash it...
Hello all, this is my first thread on XDA so if I sound a little bit idiotic, well that's to be expected. Anyway; the reason I'm asking this question is because the power button broke off, and only the volume buttons remain. So that's why I did some searching; and that's how I found out that you can turn on Rescue mode by plugging in your phone to your PC while holding Volume Down... well that's not much use to me since my phone's FRP locked. Now I'm sitting here and waiting until 7AM so that the phone automatically turns on because somehow I have more than half a brain cell!
Last time I tried Rescue mode to turn my phone on; it did turn on, and I went full caveman as you should, but maybe not too much because I was coincidentally poking the battery connector (actually no, it was the screen connector) with my screwdriver.. now I'm stuck wondering whether it was a coincidence or not. May or may not keep you updated.
EDIT: Turns out I'm keeping you updated. Unfortunately for you folks without a power button there's basically nowhere you can go with a locked FRP and without the automatic turn on feature. There MIGHT be something you could do with ADB but all I got was errors. Original cable and all. Moral of the story: patience is key. Or a new phone. You probably should buy a new phone.
