New Here - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey everyone. Would just like to start off by introducing myself. My name is Chad and I live in Jonesboro, Arkansas. I am a long time Samsung fan and have had their phones for the last few years. I started with an Eternity and then the Captivate. I currently have an ATT i717 Note that I love. I am here to discover new, interesting tweaks for my phone. I rooted my Captivate with the intention of running a custom rom, but I never got up the nerve to try it. I am wanting to root my Note, as well as run a new rom (JellyBean). I am searching the forums constantly, trying to find the best tutorial for these steps, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone.

Welcome, it's always nice to have new blood from time to time. Like the last poster said. Dig right in! There's some great walk throughs over in the development section on how to root plus if you Google "how to root galaxy note i717" there's a fantastic site with pictures and and a video how to do so. It'll flash cwm, but like many people here we'll recommend going to twrp after. And it's easy too! Just remember to read read read! We have some awesome devs so check out their work.
I will point out there is no "absolute best evar" rom so try to avoid the question. So long as you follow the instructions of the devs on the roms you'll be fine in flashing. You'll bounce around from rom to rom seeing all the awesomeness there is.
One last point, for all your question needs check out and post them in the q and a section as there's lots of smart people here.
Enjoy!!!

Welcome to you ...
As mentioned ....read much, read often ...as you can get into trouble quickly flashing incorrect software.
And also remember, this is a development site. And while most users understand this, we get far to many that do not.
It is highly likely that questions you have will have already been answered.
So please search, and then ask before getting into device trouble.
Again, welcome to you, and happy flashing...g

Hey bud I'm brandon from jonesboro too! I just started not too long ago as well so hi everyone and welcome! Happy flashing!

Donation thread for faux123 to start kernel development

I don't know how many people are familiar with faux123, but he makes amazing kernels for a wide range of devices. His kernels are always top notch and squeeze awesome battery life out our your devices. His sensation kernal took a single charge from 8-9 hours of heavy use to over 20. I've notice we have a some good kernel development here but I think we could benefit from some more (especially for MIUI or CM). I've worked with him on the Atrix and he's very interested in the SII but would need money to buy one. I'm going to throw $100 his way to get one but I'm asking for a little help. Visit his profile page, http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3332811 to take a look at what he has done and I'm sure you will agree with me in getting his help over here. The work here is awesome and entropy has done a great job but we can always use some more help.
Just be careful with this thread. Someone did the same thing in the skyrocket forum for an awesome developer to get a skyrocket through donation and there are a few that are giving a ton of crap about it.

Yeah i had to jump ship moto will not comunicate with its customers. I made a couple threads and got motos facebook wall flooded with people telling them they were gna ditch them if they didnt add the atrix to the ics list. They still have tons of people asking them and they still havent added it to the list the say the same thing every time click this lonk for the latest aoftware news. Lol it hasnt changed the only devices they put on the list are verizon devices. So i gave up and went with the gs2. Sorry op for going off topic im done . Lol moral of the story isbdont buy moto

Well for one thing, the developer looking to get a Skyrocket doesn't need one to produce Skyrocket ROMs. He already has a T-Mobile Galaxy S II that is pretty much identical. Not to mention, his T-Mo ROM was already successfully ported to the Skyrocket. Thus many over there just see it as a money grab. It would be like me asking the i9100 community for a device when I clearly don't need one because our i777 is similar enough for me to make ROMs for them as well.

[Q] Noob to XDA Dev. Looking to see if I understand this right regarding ICS ROMs.

Hey guys! I've lurked around here for a while. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT a few months ago after being a longtime iPhone user. Therefore, I'm fairly new to the whole Android tweaking process. I want to install an ICS ROM onto my phone, particularly CM9. I've read the stickies, and am really trying to understand, but at the same time, do not wish to brick my phone. So could someone tell me if this is correct? Or where I'm wrong? Based on what I've read here, to install ICS, I need to...
1. Root my phone as outlined in the thread for that. (The one about not activating the yellow triangle. Since I'm on 2.3.6, I'll need to use "Odin3 One-Click Downloader".)
2. Backup my apps and texts and crap using Titanium Backup to my SD card.
3. Install the proper kernel (where do I find this?) using Mobile Odin.
4. Make sure CWM is active, backup NAND (I assume this is an option?) and flash CM9.
5. Flash Google Apps.
6. Restore my Ti backup.
Thanks guys for the help! And sorry if I'm being stupid/completely misunderstanding.
Read, useless thread is useless

Read, read and read some more. Do a search for Hellraiser as there are no true ICS ROMs for this phone yet, only i900 ports.
If you need to ask questions like this, you are not ready for ICS and ICS is not ready for you.
Since I9100 kernel source code has only been out for a week and we had a bunch of I777-specific **** to fix - while lots of progress has been made things are not quite working yet.
man some people are rude in here....
And others are lazy. Welcome to XDA.
There are a lot of different roms. Usually they rewrite the kernel within the install of the rom. But basically you have the right idea...

Facts are facts, loser. There is not yet a fully-functioning official ICS ROM released for the i777, so any talk of one is premature. The guy admits in the title of this thread that he is a noob and doesn't quite understand. These are exactly the people who should not be flashing ANYTHING, let alone a ROM that is not ready for primetime. But keep on encouraging him and others so that the forum gets filled with people needing help to fix what they messed up. I'm sure you'll be rewarded with tons of adulation for your efforts. Troll indeed.

[Q] Which ROM Should I Use?

I recently rooted for the first time and I'm looking to find a ROM that isn't too much of an off-chute from the stock ROM but is also decent at conversing my battery life. I was thinking GB since ICS has that severe bug on the galaxy s2 1777

Please do yourself a favor and do some research before you even think about doing what you are thinking about doing.
Once you start reading and ask relevant questions, people will answer you better. Even if you haven't tried it yet, and you ask questions that occur only after having read about it, people will start pointing you in the right direction.

But yeah, click around, learn a thing and ask about that thing. If you show you are somewhat informed, you'll be helped. That's how I did it and I was helped tremendously.

KH7 and KK6 are basically the same and run fine everywhere except the Loop and O'Hare, where the data doesn't work at all.
I recently tried out LC5 by accident and it turns out that works great in O'Hare and the Loop, but is very spotty everywhere else. I should probably go through the others but that would require a free weekday in the Loop.
I have task' aokp and run flawless... Never have a single issue..
Plus he thread is fun and have a lot of support to the questions that aren't on the OP (original post)

If it's stock-like GB you're looking for, I've heard great things about Unnamed and UnOriginal.
OP, these threads are highly discouraged in this forum. I encourage those who think the OP does not deserve such flaming, please read more, you'll see that if you did, vs. threads or "which is best" threads are not allowed.
Btw, the person who posted the kernel tests thread, #1, that thread is I9100 and our I777s are different, #2, each person's I777 is different and reacts to different kernels differently, so that thread is practically useless to us.

All roms are google because google makes android but whenever you buy a phone the company puts there software on top of android. The nexus didnt have any software added so its a pure google rom. Go to the thread I sent you and look for CyanogenMod.

ROMs are phone dependant. What you are looking for is an unaltered version of android, like your nexus had. The closest you will find is a ROM like Cyanogen mod... CM for short, or one that says AOSP in the name (Android open Source Project).
Really you should read the stickies in the main forum and research a little about installing ROMs on a phone. You should not just jump in with no knowledge and expect to get it the way you want right away. This is a lot of the time a trial and error thing until you find a ROM that suits your tastes.
Good luck in your search for a new ROM.

You have a lot of reading and research to do if you ended up paying someone on Craigslist to root your phone. For all you know it only has root and still has the locked bootloader and stock recovery. READ, READ, and then READ SOME MORE.

Yes the galaxy nexus and galaxy note 2 are two total different roms. The note has samsung touchwiz which has alot of great features that pure aosp doesnt but if you are looking for aosp I would suggest cm10.1 or liquidsmooth my 2 favorit aosp roms. Just like the guy stated be sure you know what you are doing before you delve any deeper and have a bricked phone!

A good start for you is go to settings then all the way at the bottom select about phone. See what build your phone is on and also what andeois version (4.1.2 oe 4.2.2 etc) search for qhat your phone has as those and you can find out if your running a stock or custom rom. From there someone can better help you choose a rom to test. But keep in mind roms come down to what you like not qhat everyone else likes. I'm currently running the transnebula tab rom and loving right now. But always read read read before doing anything if you're new to this. Then when you think you're ready read some more then test

Just run someone else's rom. If you cant find the cm thread on your own, you got a slim chance of cooking a rom. I mean good luck but it sounds like a terrible idea to me and you dont know much about android dude. Use google to find a guide. Its not difficult friend

Read more.... lots more and jump in! It's a lot if work, but you can make your own, but you will need research. You won't get the info you need by asking, you won't get enough to succeed. Sure I could point you to the ROM kitchen thread or a thread with guides to compile and AOSP ROM from source, but I'm betting you dont know what that means yet. Which is why I say research then when you get stuck people are very helpful.
Ps guys I agree he's not ready yet and is probably best running someone's work, but I always encourage new development

Stock rooted lollipop rom

So I have been trying a few different roms over the last couple weeks (paranoid android, bliss pop and cm12) and I am curious if anyone is working on a rooted stock lollipop rom that is debloated?
Am I waiting on a rom that's not going to happen?
If so can I get a few opinions on the most stable rom that can be used as my daily driver. 5.0 and wireless qi charging are the most important.
Thanks, Matt

this should have been posted in the General or QA section!
Oh Geebus duck and cover!
currently they are working on gaining root on 23A(stock lollipop rom) and have had no luck. So it doesn't exist yet.
This may have been a bad place to post this as I hear the fuel for the flame wars start to turn up.

You asked a question in the wrong thread using the tite "Stock rooted Lollipop ROM".... what were you thinking? You have been a member since 2012, you should know to use the search function. There is a thread at the top of the general forums discussing how root is not possible on lollipop yet, and several other threads discussing the progress.
Obviously I posted in the wrong section of the forum.
The search function is available and I understand that.
Basically, I'm sick of trying a lot of different roms and was looking for help.
I have seen others flamed for the same thing and do not like being on this side of it.
I usually just figure out these types of issues on my own and this is the reason why!! I will keep reading and trying each rom until I find the BEST one for me.
