CM10 a3 Thanks!! - Motorola Droid X2

Less than 10 posts so I have to post here!! Thanks to ANYBODY that had a hand in CM10!!! Installed CM10 a3 coming from the latest Eclipse. The only issue I had was google now crashing. Got the latest google search from jsgraphicart post# 1257 in the Development thread. Also used VideoCam Illusion for camcorder. ADW and Apex launchers killed my battery so I went back to stock. Loving Jelly Bean!! :good:

Loved A3, but not matter what I did, it killed the battery in just a couple of hours, so I had to go back to Eclipse.

i also love cm10, i just flashed back to eclipse 2.3 last night and have been thinking about an sbf all day. i mean, if you arent a heavy user, and you dont use many or ANY apps, cm10 runs very well.

I was pretty much forced to go back to CM10 from Eclipse. I was running a2 for a while, but couldn't deal with my apps crashing on me all the time. Lots of games, e-mail and Facebook, and a few others.
But, after a couple months with Eclipse... man, my phone was crashing a MINIMUM of twice a day due to the memory hitting a wall. I jump around a lot, going from facebook to a few games to mail within a half-hour or so. For whatever reason, Eclipse just wouldn't clear RAM properly, and it would force-reboot constantly.
Got sick of it and switched to a3, and gotta say I'm so much happier. I mean, I never disliked CM10, just the crashing was driving me nuts. But, I figure a crashed app on occasion is WAY better than a force-reboot. Plus, I found a post about an app that fixes the Google crashing issue.
Now, if only there were fixed apps for Gmail and Facebook...

This was brought up a while ago in the CM10 thread. Apparently the Blacked out Facebook app doesnt force close. I dont use Facebook so I never tried it. But you can get it here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/b-...er-popular-apps-blacked-out-mar-8th-13-a.html
As far as Gmail, I'm not sure if anyone found a working one. But I think Gmail on the web works good.

I thought I saw that a while back, but couldn't find it again when I was looking for it. Thanks for that. I'll also have to give in-browser Gmail a shot, makes sense that it shouldn't close like the app does.

Black app is a no-go. I had it force-crash on me twice already. Oh well...

Ah. I think I know why. They updated it to the newest version which I think is the problem. The same thing that happened with Google Now. I think one of the updates messed it up for the DX2. I'll try searching through the CM10 thread and see if anyone posted the old apk.
EDIT: Maybe this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36087163
Or maybe any of these versions (listed on the right hand side):
http://www.androiddrawer.com/2274/download-facebook-for-android-1-9-7-app-apk/#.UUN-W1toTpg
I'm just trying to find an old apk that might work for you.

I also like CM10 but the battery life scares me away every time, i use the DX2 as my main phone.

i feel the same. after eclipse, cm10 goes to 50% after a half of a day with little to no use, and .... it is a very hard decision to make.

I haven't actually seen that much of a change in battery life between Eclipse and CM10. When I use them moderately, the battery life still plummets midway through the day, and if I don't use it at all, it will go two days on a charge. That much didn't change between them at all.
@jsgraphicart: You didn't have to do so much legwork, but I'm sure anyone who visits this thread that didn't see it before will appreciate it. I'll give those a try and report back which one (if any) works on our CM10.

I think I am done with eclipse for good. After a fresh install it will be very fast but over time it gradually begins to slow down and I get some processes that force close and some reboots. I also haven't noticed that much difference in battery life between eclipse and a3. Facebook hasn't crashed on me yet and I am on it many times during the day.

Actually figured out what the problem is. Which, I knew it before, but forgot. 90% of the Black Facebook works on CM10. The part that doesn't? Groups pages and Events pages. Those continue to crash, because apparently they use something different for those.
So, while the regular portions of Facebook have not caused the app to crash, every time I go to Groups (which I do A LOT) causes it to CTD.

Buggy ROMs?

Are you guys noticing that a lot of the custom ROMs out now are pretty buggy? I have tried about 10 ROMs in the last two weeks, and usually they seem great at first. Eventually weird things start happening, like sluggish rotation behavior, or random reboots. Sometimes MMS messages will not send, sometimes texts get hung up and I have to delete all my threads... I've had my phone freeze while sleeping, and missed alarms. I find myself flashing a ROM almost every other day, because it seems that I don't notice a huge problem until it has a day to settle on my phone. One problem that really annoys me is that in the Gallery app, on some ROMs, when you rotate the phone, the picture flys off the screen for a second or so, then re-centers itself. In general I've had issues with 3G/1X, and sometimes even calls being sent to voicemail without ringing. I also notice that from one ROM to the next, battery life can be dramatically different, despite having the same exact settings.
When I had my un-rooted Evo 3D, I had barely any of those problems. I definitely never had it freeze during the middle of the night, or overheat, or get wildly-sluggish. Now, with my stock ROM, I never had as SMOOTH as an experience as the fastest custom ROM I've used, and I've also never had as great battery life as the longest-lasting custom ROM out there. I just wish there was a way to take all the good things from every ROM out there, and put it into one, perfect ROM. I have seen the ROMs that claim to do this, but they still tend to have basic flaws. It makes me think that an updated base is to blame for a lot of this. The first round of custom ROMs I had that were based off the original stock seemed rock-solid. Now I've tried just about everything, and there are glaring problems with each of them. Sometimes I am embarassed because my phone has powered off during very important times--like on-call situations at night.
I have multiple wipe APKs, but I was told that the newer superwipe was the end-all be-all of wiping, so that's what I've been using lately. Right now I am using one of the more stable ROMs, Revolution HD 1.1.1, but I still get the random picture movement when rotating in Gallery, I still get really bad 3G/1X problems, where I have to frequently turn off mobile data to get it back... I have had it reboot on me twice in the last 2 days. One thing that really pisses me off, which is not specific to this ROM, is that when I am on WIFI, MMS messages tend not to send or receive... I can't recall if the original stock ROM had this problem or not. I have this issue with stock messaging as well as Handcent. The moment I disable WIFI, my messages appear with images.
Being that I didn't have these issues with truly stock ROMs, I don't believe it is a hardware issue. Am I the only one experiencing these problems, or are others just glossing over these sort of reliability issues, and accounting them to being a flashaholic, or something similar? The only reason I keep flashing is to find one that is rock solid. If I could get the original stock ROM with battery life to get me through an entire day, I'd be happy, but it didn't come close.
What ROMs did you try?
MMS Messages send and receive over WiFi for me just fine (Sense ROM) but on AOSP, they will not.
I suggest you try one of the lesser popular ROMs, as the top ones seem to have the most issues according to my reading and research.
If you want a fast, stable and great battery life that just works check out CleanROM. It is basically stock with the junk pulled out. The dev is very hands. Worth looking at the very least.
well it's a good thing everybody is not having the same issues you are so we know to ignore this useless thread. thanks for the info and cool story bro.
i have two words for you... user. error.
i have never had one issue with cleanrom, steel rom, or WTSB rom... or smokin rom...
all of which would easily be classified as "top roms" as you put it.
and right now i am on virus' eternity 1.4.... been on it, with the same kernel, same settings, etc... for roughly two weeks. zero issues there as well.
sooooooooooo..... either everybody just got lucky, or you are causing the issues you described.
i never have noticed even a blip of lag on eternity.

Everyone uses their device differently, has wildly different settings, applications, amount of time per day spent doing one thing or another. In some cases we can consider there to be user error, but this really is unlikely in this case. The problem lies in the fact that we have more ROM"chefs" than developers that actually have the knowledge to code their own ROM from the ground up, instead of pasting other peoples work together and calling it an advancement. You can't provide support or bug fixes for work that isn't your's and you have little to no coding experience. Most of these roms are like some you mentioned; a ROM that just has simple things like "bloat" taken out. Those types of chefs have a purpose here, and their roms are nice for some users but they aren't doing much for the improvement of Android overall, and they don't know enough to be trying to slap features in that they can't debug...
Anyway, rant over. I think your reply was hasty and offensive, not to mention based on what I have seen, inaccurate. I think you have been lucky personally because you are using roms like clean ROM that don't add or change much. Therefore you really wouldn't experience what this user is referring to.
I get random reboots often. The mms over wifi has never been an issue though.

Yes to some extent I see your point. Smokin rom is a build based on steel rom... steel rom however, is just steel rom. Clean rom has had little issues with previous builds but scott being a dev has worked everything out and optimized that rom to the max... and it has its own tweaks to it as well. Same thing with steel rom. I'm not sure what wtsb is based off of but I have never had problems with that one either.
And virus rom is damn near flawless. I have never had a problem with... ever. Since day one. Been running 1.4 for over 2 weeks and it is just as fast as it was the day I flashed it. So im confused by the op's post when he says after a few days they have all lagged and become slow
Was I a little harsh? Maybe. But was I right to think this person is simply complaining and wasting my time? Absolutely. This thread is just him complaining, not problem solving, not helping anybody, just knocking people's hard work when the real issues are found on his end obviously.

Well ViperROM is actually known for having some problems. Viper is trying to fix that, but any other ROM that is posted (well some but not all) don't have any bugs unless they're posted on the OP. Any other weird hiccups you may experience will most likely be kernel related, such as the random reboots or severe battery drain. I've tried most of the ROMs here, and I have yet to experience any weird quirks unless they are the ones posted on the OP. There are some ROMs that do have weird bugs, but it's not all of the ROMs.

should you be whining about a "test" ROM having bugs? i think not, seeing as how it clearly says "Test" multiple times. what do you think test roms are for? to work out the bugs maybe. and phones are picky. all roms will not work perfectly for you. you "MUST" find the right rom/kernel combination that works best for the way you use your phone. less *****ing and more testing is all you need.

I'm with this guy.
Try a fresh install.
Only use stock apps for the first couple of days your trying.
The girlfriend used to have a stock unrooted Droid x that she would complain about screwing up but it was usually her using alternative music apps and such .
Also if you use titanium backup never batch restore your apps and data. Manually update each app that you want so your not restoring any nasty app data that might be screwing up your roms
Hope this helps

Yes, I've noticed it too but you just need to use a dose of caution and ask around. I tried about a half dozen ROM's and I've found that the ones that are more "tricked out" have the most problems. Makes sense, because they are fooling with more stuff in the ROM.
That said, there are some really fast and good ones out there. Deck's ROM never gave me any trouble but it was a little TOO stock for me. I've since switched to CleanROM 2.7 and that's incredibly solid and almost as fast as the tricked out OC'd ones. So try one of those preceded with a full wipe and you should be happy.

Seeing how this is a thread about "Buggy ROMs", I feel justified in my post. Did I ***** and moan and complain about the issue? No. Did I complain about lack of support? No. Did I complain about anything else? No.
I stated the problem...."100% wakelock while charging" and that's it.
Go preach elsewhere.

I was originally coming onto the forum to post about how every rom/kernel combo eventually starts freezing on me after a few days of use (causing me to miss alarms/calls/etc), when I ran into this post.
I do use Titanium backup pro to batch restore and have been doing so on the Hero/Epic/Shift/3vo. This is the first device that I have had any problems with, but it does seem to coincide with titanium backup since the stock rom was butter.
What's the method of manually updating each app? Is it simply downloading from the market and restoring data to that app? And how is that any different with the likelihood of restoring "nasty app data"?
OP, do you use titanium backup to batch restore apps too?
Everyone else, is there a log file that I can look at to discover the process that triggers the freeze?
No problems on the roms I've used at all. Most of these posts do end up being user error, or just a bad phone. As someone else suggested, try Cleanrom. It is bullet proof. Nothing fancy, but it works forever.
If there were more problems, there would be a ton more threads like this. Yet we only see a post like this every week or so...

MIUI = Love!

Just installed the MIUI Beta and I am LOVING this ROM! My absolute favorite so far. It's smooth, my battery seems to be holding good. No FC's yet. The look and feel is great! Good job devs!
Few questions though. How do I delete individual notifications? No (X) next to then, and I tried to swipe them to delete, but nothing. Also, on the lock screen, if I drag over the camera, it doesnt open the camera, just goes to the home screen.
Other than that it's amazing! Thanks guys!

I just came from CM7. Didn't like it much. Too glitchy and just didn't like the overall look and feel. I had Eclipse before and that was my favorite until now. Just too many issues with CM7
- dock shortcuts would seem time change or dissapear on their own. Like I would boot up and there would be a star where the browser used to be. Or where the app drawer shortcut was. One time I pressed the browser button and ALL of my dock icons dissappeared.
- Widgets sometimes would be invisible. I could long press them where they should have been and it would let me delete them or move them. But they wouldn't show up.
- I had it in my dock and it showed it was plugged in and charging. Had like 95% battery when I plugged in. Woke up to a dead phone. 0% battery. Even if it wasn't charging, it would have made it through the night on 95%
And just some other weird stuff. Just didn't like it much. Sorry. I even tried wiping and reflashing. Still basically the same.
MIUI is running stable so far. And I love the look and feel.

SMH. You should read up more on MIUI, and TRY IT, before you put out your opinions/"assumptions." MIUI was created by Xiaomi Tech, a Chinese firm (dunno wtf you got arabs..), so it's not just some random dev's collaborating, but an actual company putting out the ROM for usage in handsets in Asia that got picked up by the rest of the Android community. And as far as open source, they announced back in February of this year that they were going to begin opensourcing their applications and ROM, which you can see over at their GitHub (google it..).

Tried it out on my brother's DX and it was MUCH better, so I'm hoping Ace will have an update for us sooner or later, althought much like DZK he's busy as well (IIRC he just recently lost his job after moving so that's taken priority numero uno).
As far as this:

And fwiw the Chinese own the **** out of us when it comes to phone development. I believe they're responsible for a couple bootloader unlocks and gaining root access to the original x.
MIUI is pretty sweet; It was the first rom is successfully flashed and man I had a field day with it up until you tube....

Thanks thelowend. Yes I have tried Eclipse, and as I said it was my favorite. But MIUI is really cool. I think I like it because its so different. And everything seems so integrated. Like the notifications, I love how It gives a place for a reply right in the notification! That rocks! It just looks and feels more refined.
I am finding a few more bugs. Like Youtube not working, or any streaming video for that matter. Even some of my saved vids on the SD card dont want to play. And I can't record video either. All freeze after about 2 seconds of play/recording.
So far that is the biggest turn-off for me. I use youtube allll the time. Anyone know if they are working on this? I even tried the mobile site, and neither that or the app work.
Eclipse had its glitches too. But both are very good ROMs.
Oh one other glitch that really bugged me from CM7 is gapps kept FC'ing after a while and I would need to un-install and re-install it every so often.

No problem. Video play back was always odd for me on miui; there were certain sites were streaming would work perfectly and then there were ones that just never worked.
Nothing beats miui when it comes to customization
I think there was an update to the youtube app last month that enable you to stream videos from it.

So far no ANRs after opening and closing Chrome Brower a bunch (used to get them pretty often)... only been 15 minutes, so I'm still cautious.

Good to hear this.
perfomance difference is not that big difference. opening apps still slow.mayb i need to optimize them by running at 1 time

---------- Post added at 06:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:15 PM ----------
a bit sluggish for the first boot.
opening apps for 1st time is slow but after that is butterly smooth.
screen swiping is damn smooth.
love how google now works although i don really use it.
quadrant score is around 3.3k in performance mode
and again screen rotation take 4-6 seconds!

I seem to remember at least one Nexus 7 review said this slowness was a 'feature' - i.e., to prevent accidental rotations...as such it might be intentional.
My screen rotation animation starts after one second and completes a half second later. If the virtual keyboard is up, it takes an extra second for the rotation animation to start. I haven't experienced any 4 to 6 second delays but it could conceivably be slower with more resource-intensive apps.
Awesome update, running stock unrooted, web browsing is much, much better, its actually enjoyable now. I havent tried chrome yet, was only using stock browser with default settings with flash set to always on.
Project butter makes things run smoothly.
Google now is pretty awesome.
Thats all i noticed for now.
Great job asus!!
Update went well. Chrome running great. Weather Widget stuck on Centigrade. Scrolling is nice and smooth. No complaints after an hour of use.

i m afraid i ll disagree
after 3-4 reboots..
performance IS better though dont excpect to see the butterness of a galaxy Nexus or Nexus 7. Stock launcer is by far improved, faster smoother and very very responsive. I noticed some lag when scrolling on portrait mode but it was the moving wallpaper...disable it and itll be ok.
screen rotation IS noticable faster
opening apps IS faster though i noticed a small hickup when opening some of the times
Google now is working lovely, fast and loud. When in portrait at lock screen the google now icon dissapears, u have to landscape it to appear and use..:silly:
Chrome is a bit faster...not much, but it is better at least in responsivness...no ANR till now. Stock browser still better..
Nova launcher wich i use needs a clear cache/data and then its absolutely amazing
stock gallery takes about 3-4 sec everytime to open ..thats bad
Youtube app seems faster overall to me..
Maps just the same..
seems to me Asus did a good job here...just good

When I checked it this morning (3 different times!) all I get is this message-
"Failed to download file.
Please wait for a moment and try again."
So the update is out, but it's not downloading yet for me. Maybe a lot of people are all trying to download at the same time? Who knows. I'm completely stock in case anyone is wondering. Anyone else seeing that message?

I got the same message and even rebooted a couple times with no success. Then i gave up and left it alone, and like 10 mins later my prime notified me that it dowmloaded the update and is ready to install. So i guess anyone with a greyed out check update box, it will eventually download on its own.

*UPDATE*
Finally began downloading the update after the 5th time of rebooting and then checking for update. The install took roughly 18-20 minutes. No issues with the install so far. Slightly laggy, but that's normal until a few reboots after firmware update (every firmware update has been like that for me so I'm pretty sure it's normal).
So far so good

My Wifi is still slow but thats expected with the metal cover.. Thats about the worse thing I can say at the moment..
Has anyone tried replacing the primes back cover with one from a TF300? Isn't it the exact same size??
ASUS did a fantastic job (so far..) in my opinion..

I'll be holding off updating until a root method is discovered, the reason being that I'd like to restore my user apps with Titanium Backup, as I'll be resetting to factory defaults right after the upgrade. Not taking the chance of crap performance manifesting itself later after my god-awful experience with ICS. If by the end of October I'm still dissatisfied with my Prime, I'll be selling it at a loss and saying adiós to ASUS.
I got the download, but when I try to install it and rebooted it said it failed. Went to check update again, it's says there's no update.
Anybody else with the same issue?

It appears same issue when doing OTA to upgrade to ICS .28. This thread has some soft of information can be refer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908030.
I had to update manually when it is failed for OTA. You may need to download the complete ROM and update it from SD card.

Jelly Bean Talk

So as we all know, we now have Jelly Bean. And to not flood dragonzkillers thread with general talk about it, I thought I'd start a thread for people to come and say what they like, what they dont like, and tips and tricks they might have, cool settings in the ROM, etc. Any issues should still be posted in the other thread.
But let me go ahead and start by saying I am so amazed at how smooth and fast jelly bean is on our phone. I never thought it would run better than ICS. The built in quick reply for messaging is awesome. I actually find a lot of things I used to use getting replaced with the stock apps. The default browser is nice. I have also found that if you use Nova launcher, though, and set the animation speed and scrolling speed to a faster setting, it makes the phone feel even smother.
Anyway, I'm not gonna make this post too long. So thats all I have right now. What does everyone else think?

He'll definitely like CM10 more. A lot more stable. Do you do all his flashing for him? Meaning he's not very tech savvy? If so, there may be things he runs into that you might need to help him with. lol. SD storage is all different and some apps wont install from the play store. He might just have new things to ***** about. lol

After a few days running this ROM I can happily say that it feels like this was made for our phone...as in, it's a perfect fit and feels natural. No random reboots. A couple app freezes but they correct themselves. I've found workarounds to get the apps I needed on the phone.. the Facebook crapp....err, app is glitchy like usual but there's always friendcaster. Love the screen transition animation. Its just amazing all around.
Made a video of my first boot of cm10 for anyone who's hesitant to flash and wants to see how it is.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVDTB4uwM3w&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I'm amazed how well it run. The only issues I have really had is the Facebook app and the Email app (for my work Exchange email) tend to be a little crashy (FB is worse than any others), but I can deal with that to have a phone I can actually use. This is my first ROM on this phone (had many on my OG Droid), but the process isn't as bad as I had anticipated.
Can't wait for him to release Alpha 2 to fix the camera and SD issues.
flashed this and i was amazed at the number of custom options as well as how smooth it actually was. however, i was plagued with having to reSBF, reroot and reflash almost everytime i reboot and i needed my phone today so i sbf'd back to 2.3.5 and restored eclipse.
hopefully alpha 2 is even more stable.

So far I love CM10. I was frequently getting frustrated with how slow my phone felt. I was last running 2.3.4 using Eclipse ROM and my phone would hang everywhere, especially waiting for the keyboard to pop up. Now everything is nice and quick. My only real complaints is that when I try to change the battery state LED options, the field to change the frequency of them is greyed out, and they are all on "always on" and the field is greyed out and I can't change them. I hate having a LED on when I'm sleeping so I had to just turn the whole setting off so now I have no LEDs for battery states.
My other complaint is how fast CM10 sucks down my battery. Under the same conditions that Eclipse on 2.3.4 would get me from morning until 9pm until depleted, my phone keeps dying at 5pm.

While team battery life isn't bad, it is definitely worse than eclipse. To be expected I suppose since we have a jb rom running on a gb kernel. My question Houghton, is does Google Now drain team battery? I think it's cool but I would take the longer battery.... Thanks

tried a2 cm10 then reverted back to my cm7.2 nandroid
I like how this is going. I used it for about 2 hours then realized Netflix was still a no go and my Andygraph Ti82 calc app wouldn't load the Rom and my saved programs. That was a deal breaker. I might give alpha 3 or beta 1 another shot. Loved it for a short time. The voice call dropping needs to be fixed as well before I can use it as a daily. Reloaded my nandroid of cm 7.2. Everything still works there.

What ROM would fit the needs for gaming, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram?

I have tried Molten 2.3 redux, Liberty3, Eclipse 2.3 and yes also the ultra popular CM7 . Honestly leave CM7 out beause it has a huge impact on my mms and sms and I don't like that ! Anyways you guys should recommend any other ROMs I have not listed or tell me which is better of the top three ! Thank you
I would recommend eclipse. I havent tried gaming on it but I'm sure its a ok. Give it a try, if you don't like it try another rom. flashing never hurts

i mean , if you are someone who plays games on a console, and mainly uses a computer for communication/web browsing , cm10 is by far the best phone experience available for the droid x2. i use mine for mainly sms, mms, calls, playing music, and a bit of browsing/youtube . i have never had even ONE force close. it all depends on what you use your phone for i guess. the thing is, once you have used 4.0+ for a decent amount of time , gingerbread (even looking its best in eclipse) is bland and stiff. it is really hard to go back.
also, it really doesnt matter if it is gingerbread or jellybean, the reason this phone has so many issues is purely our lack of ram. something i had no idea to even pay attention to when looking at phones. i can be running eclipse 2.3, and if i even try to have a widget that requires data , or anything more than one or two "add on apps ", my phone either force closes things, or just hot reboots itself just like when it was stock. it is an awesome phone. my first android phone. and also the most frustrating phone i have ever owned. sorry , i usally dont type much and figured i would give my fifty three cents on the subject. cheers!

Ha same here man I decided to go with cm7 and wow ! Not in a good way lol. My battery drained so quicky. Usually My battery would be at 90 by the end of the school day (using Eclipse 2.3) but with CM7 it was around 64 . Well I'm curently thinking of going back to Eclipse but I also really like Molten 2.3 and Liberty I don't which to pick but I rather use Gingerbread because I get on Facebook, Twitter, and play some gaming through out the day. Well let me know if you decide to go back to Eclipse 2.3 or you give Liberty or Molten 2.3 a try
i would have to say that it has gotten very old wondering if certain apps will work on cm10. also i find myself not feeling , for lack of a better word "secure" that my phone will be able to make the call, or send that text. ill get 3 texts lumped together while i have perfect signal, and who even knows what my battery is even at? not me. :crying: lol. eclipse has always been my favorite in terms of speed and stability. back to 2.3 and a fully functioning (reliable) phone . i am going to see about learning to make a few more themes for us for 2.3 as well. since it seems to be this phones only hope. the things that bug me about cm10 will never be fixed. so time to accept the gingerbread truth . :good:
