EVO LTE s-on - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So I've gotta ask and take it easy on me if this is a stupid question. But do only certain roms work with s-on. I'm asking because every Rom above 4.1.1 has never gotten past the boot screen on my EVO. So is this question legitimate?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

From what i read yes, but same with s-off depending on what version you're on.. S-off is the way to go, i was having mad issues flashing with s-on and always ended up in a boot loop, did s-off yesterday and have tried three different roms successfully... Totally cool.. Try the s-off using dirtyracun and if you have issues, they will help you out in their irc chanel... Bigdaddy explained it best to me... Him and captain throwback ate good to go if you need help...

Some Roms will require you to flash the kernels first via fastboot or the flash image gui app. Pain in the ass if you ask me. Just go S-off..

Thanks guys....in some cases I've said I'm lucky to have all mac in my house but I feel unlucky with this s-off process. No one is supporting mac, and while I know terminal really well I don't wanna brick a phone I got 3 days ago

S off and it will save you time and stress while flashing roms. Just come to the dark side

If you don't want to s-off just use flash img gui to flash your roms.

You can create an ubuntu live cd to boot from and use that to s-off...or does that not work on a mac?

I knew there would b something complicated to it lol
Well its sprint so I know to only check cdma forums
But I don't have the phone with me ill get it tomorrow but how do I tell what hboot? And what r other factors that determine what way I need to use to root it? Like does soft ware version or anything like that matter?

Uncheck fastboot - menu>settings>power>fastboot
Turn the phone off
Hold power + volume down to boot into hboot.
The only thing that matters for rooting the phone is hboot for now.

How to root without unlock ?

Is there a way to root the EVO 4G LTE without unlocking the bootloader , because I have not yet found a method .

No, I believe the bootloader has to be unlocked because installing the superSU package requires modifying the system partition which can't be done with a locked bootloader.
Sent from my EVO LTE
Do you know a method to unlock while keeping all non-sd files , I dont mind if everything is formatted , but I'd be nice to keep them .
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
S- off roots without unlocking. As does zedomax. As does the HTC universal rooter.
Its gonna depend in your hboot
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Yeah i was gonna say....im on 1.12 and also was soff with my 3D and 4g. Ive never used htc unlock system. Seems from what i have read its bs. Naturally i skip 90% about it because it doesnt apply to me but yeah im rooted and soff and i have never even been to the site much less done the process? I wouldnt have bought this device without s off. I waited a couple weeks after launch till they had it then i purchased it. They seem to have alot more available now than they once did but still an annoying unnecessary hassle i couldnt stand. This my 3rd rooted evo so you learn as you go. If it matters to you it wont happen to you again but for many it is irrelevant. The guys i feel bad for are replacement guys who by no fault of there on have no choice.

The problem you guys are having is that most dev and root users with experience 90% of the time do as i did and purchase there device when launched or close to it. When the evo 4g lte was launched most used the s off style of root and once achieved there was not alot of dev work towards doing it for the updated versions. Im sure its being tried but not many....that kinda thing is done the first week of the device. Hope you guys do find a method because it slows down dev process by spliting us.

I found how to root without unlocking , but that requires a previous firmware version , and I do not want to downgrade .
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
For the record, violating warranty by unlocking hboot is only an issue with HTC, Sprint doesn't really care
I'm trying to use RegawMod , but it always freezes on Rebooting to Bootloader , help . I've tried on 2 computers already .
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Its a known issue manually reboot the phone when regawmod says rebooting phone, or try running it with the phone in fastboot
I think it was because I was missing AndroidLib.DLL
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
It should be in local temp files, at least I think that's where the files get to. Most of the time rebooting manually gets it going
Tried , it the application on my computer always freezes .

Well you can always download the adb mini SDK and sign up to HTC developers. It's a pretty painless process.

Who checks md5

Just wondering how many people check it on downloads. I personally never even heard of it until recently. Besides if the download doesn't match the md5 and you flash anyways what kind of misery could you possibly bring on yourself ?.
If its a bad download its a bad download right ?. (Which I've never had I think). All that needs to be dine is download again.
Sent from my EVO 4G LTE using xda premium
I always do. Roms, radios, gapps. Everything.
Its easy and doesn't hurt.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I always check http://www.winmd5.com/?rid=winmd5
I never do and have never had a problem. I probably should though.

I may look into one of those user friendly matching methods .

I don't always check it, but if I do I usually just use esfile explorer once the file is on my phone.

Well... It could be many things. Usually a piece of the Rom is missing.
That could be really bad if your WiFi and radio modules are gone. Means no WiFi or network connection.
But, as you stated, a simple redownload should be good

I'd suggest checking it when downloading firmware, since those can actually brick your device. As far as ROMs, themes, mods, etc....the most it should cause is a slight inconvenience (lost time flashing, failing, having to redownload), so checking isn't as warranted.
Flashed hundreds of things in my rooting lifetime. Never once paid attention to it.

Never ever knows what is md5sums......I just download and flash Roms... ..hehehehe

In the past I didn't, but as of late I've been trying to make a habit of it.
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
Just for radios or firmware..never for a Rom.

just about always since time warner has been having issues in my area and ive gotten a few broken d/l's lately.
always for radio or firmware. I always take a screenshot of md5 on devhost before clicking download. Then I can easily compare. As vinchenzop said, bad firmware flash can completely brick you.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
Yeah, always check for firmware. For a rom, the worst thing that could happen is you get a failure to flash. But if you get a bad download with firmware, you could brick your phone. I think all the file explorers allow you to check the md5.

In all my years of flashing, I only have on firmware. I use Root Explorer when I actually do

They probably achieved s-off via jtag.. so it will be a while before devs achieve s-off. Not saying they can't do it.

What exactly is jtag? I'm not a noob but I'm definitely not a dev... I also noticed the bootloader still said locked so I'm assuming they didn't have to use HTC dev first like my EVO LTE(just left sprint for T-Mobile). I'd like to keep from having to register my phone with HTC dev in case of warranty issues

Jtag is a service that can flash motherboards, they can unbrick them, root them, s-off, ect. Its only because they have the files from HTC them selves to do it. I have talked to them before in my HTC inspire 4g days.... Ide love to have an evo, 2nd best phone on the market

[Q] Gnex to the DNA

Well after going through 4 GNex replacements VZW has decided to send me a HTC DNA to replace it, and it will be here monday.
I am curious as to the two different DNA Development Threads... ?
Can someone explain?
Also as I have been reading threads (still reading now) that the current RUU is unrootable?
Is this still true? ( I may have already got to "that thread" by the time I get an answer)
Just trying to get some info before I delve into it.

Are you referring to the DNA Android Development and DNA Original Android development boards? The first one (loosely speaking) is more for kangs, and roms that are based off of stock, as well as roms that are based off of other people's work (i.e. not fully original work). The original development board is geared towards roms built from source (i.e. AOSP roms), as well as development that introduce original features.

This is false. I recommend using Moonshine to root and unlock your device on the latest update.

Agreed.
I intentionally moved from the gnex to the DNA, as I had a coupon to get it for free and I felt the deal couldn't be beat.
After a slow start (as s-off wasn't available yet) when I first got it, I am now absolutely thrilled with it and couldn't be happier.
Performance is so much better than the Gnex, it's ridiculous.

4G is a-ok. I had a Gnex once upon a blue moon and the differences are staggering. I found the screen to be dark and brooding no matter how high the brightness was set. On the DNA, even at low brightness the colors seem to pop. You'll be more than happy.

I too will be a Gnex refugee. My 2 Gnexs have touch screen issues that come and go. My used DNA should arrive tomorrow. I just want an Android phone that works properly. I'm also buying a Qi wireless charger.
I am S-off, Rooted. Tried several roms but had no data at all, couldn't sign in to Google account.
I had backed up my stock Rom after I rooted and I'm on it now. Rebooted.
