HELP with s2 updating via kies. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm afraid I've bricked my s2, which I just got for x mas. I tries to update to 4.1 through kies, as its available here in Canada for virgin mobile users. It was going smooth until the actual firmware download process, where for about an hour it was at 60%. I decided to reset the s2, and took the USB cable out and pressed power, and both volume buttons. It came to the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies" well now at first that was stuck at 0% saying it didn't recognize my device. Now, after taking out the battery and putting it back, its stuck at 60% also. I'm scared, and I need this soon. Please help.

Re: HELP
Yeah...never unplug/reboot your device while updating/flashing.
I assume you can get to Download Mode right?
Sent from the little guy

Download mode? Right now kies is at the firmware emergency recovery screen. Its stuck at 60%
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Well....why don't you claim warranty?
Well...warranty. ..go out there abd tell them what happened, don't tell them you unplugged it while updating tho.
Sent from the little guy

Sorry for double post, but the s2 itself says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again. It shows the same bar as kies, also not moving for about an half hour now. Everytime I try to press those buttons, volume and power, it takes me to this screen.

Re: HELP
I9100M
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Ok, it's vol down + power + home (download mode) and vol up + power + home (recovery mode).
You wanna do it yourself? Get the firmware from sammobile.com
Sent from the little guy

How would I do it myself? What should I do? Unplug the USB? Keep it in? Right now its still on 60% plugged in.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

It's gonna stay stucked at 60 %.
We can help you get the jb update via-non official ways (If you're device is branded, warranty will be voided).
Sent from the little guy

Both of those button combinations take me to the same screen. "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kids and try again"

I tried again, this time It didn't recognize the device. I would prefer stock, even if its the old 4.04. I've seen some program called Odin. Could I use that somehow. Also this new users five minute post thing is annoying me.

You're gonna have to read a thing or two before playing with Odin.
Try another usb port and keep trying with kies recovery.
DO NOT wipe anything if you ever get to recovery.

All I can say is **** kies.

Lol ok, odin it is.
Go to the site I posted and get a firmware there.

I think you're over 10 posts now but well.
First of all you could use a little bit of reading before any of this, would be wise.
Secondly,
1 - get firmware from sammobile / xda
2 - get odin
3 - kill all kies applications running.
4 - plug in your device to the PC and open odin
5 - open the firmware package as in:
Pda = code
Phone = modem
Csc = csc
6 - make sure re-partition is not ticked and press start.
7 - Are you sure you don't wanna read a couple of threads before you do all thsese?
Sent from the little guy

I got this, if it doesn't work, my warranty is still available right? Because Odin isn't root.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Well....yeah....but not exactly.
You'll be modifying you're device via non official way.
If the store finds out, warranty will be voided.

Big download, my ****ty internet will take a some time for this. Thanks for the help so far, I have a good feeling this will work.

I did that and it just boots back into the Samsung logo
Hold power down and volume down and plug it in for download mode and flash a kernel that can wipe and install.

Or if at bar.....
Hold all three buttons till Samsung appears and dissapears then let go of all three to get into recovery menu to see if you have a kernel.... then wipe clear data and reflash.

The i777 NEVER had Froyo. It was released with GB 2.3.4. When trying to root "a friends" phone it's best to have read everything and be prepared if things go wrong. Its a hard sell, when you trying to explain why their phone is borked. Also I find Heimdall a bit easier to use than Odin.
Nobody seems to be asking the obvious question: are you positive this is an I777, and not another variant of the S2, like a skyrocket, our even the 1900?
Take out the battery and look at the label under the battery. what model does it say the phone is?
I agree with wgoldfarb, I very nearly did the same thing to my work phone a few months back. It was in a ballistic case, and I couldn't tell the difference until I opened it and held it side by side with my i777,but it turned out it was an older infuse. $20 says that if he's positive he had froyo, it's the same situation.

[Q] hard bricked or what? help plz! :'(

Hi!
I have the samsung galaxy note i717, a few days ago the phone shutted down by itself while i wasn't ussing it, it read online that it was too much apps. i did the soft and hard reset and i had the same issue, so i read the next step was a factory reset. so i did it, and wipe the cache. after that, the phone started to reboot/restart by itself while i wasn't using it or wasn't charging... i did the factory reset, reboot it and even reinstalled it the firmware again on kias, but, the problem keep happening. today i left it charging for a long time and the phone won't turn on, it doesn't even show the battery logo, no download mode, no safe mode, no reset mode... and i think it is hard bricked. i read about jtag, changing the motherboard, or use a jig... i want to know what u guys think about this... i bought it on ebay and i would have to return the phone otherwise, so i'm trying to fix it by myself...
ty :fingers-crossed:

I've kinda seen comments that jtaggn is like pretty efficient but you would have to do alot and jign plug tht thing and c if it will wake it up. Sometimes works and sometimes doesn't depends.how bricked the note is i guess a more direct app is jtaggn

JTAG is for a phone with the rom from another phone flashed to it. You can't enter recovery and Odin doesn't recognize it. It is the only way to bypass the boot and flash the correct rom.
Jig is for phones that won't go into recovery by software or buttons.
I think you have a battery issue. Trade with someone, then you will probably need the jig ($3.00 from ebay) to get into recovery.
well guys thanks a lot! but, i took it somewhere and the dude changed the battery nothing hapened and he told me i should just return it and i did. i loved that cellphone!

[Q] Why won't my Samsung Galaxy s3 work??? I haven't touched it!

Arrrggg my beloved Galaxy S3 is completely broke....
It is still under warranty however the screen has a small crack at the bottom (been there for months and doesn't effect phone) so my network said the warranty is now void...
I was using my phone, i put it down for a minute, when i picked it back up the Splash screen was on, and the phone wasn't doing anything!
I haven't messed with the phone and never even considered rooting it, i have no knowledge of this stuff!
What do i do??? I can get it into download mode, however, that's as far as it goes, it won't actually connect to the computer, the computer recognises it and makes the connection sound but it doesn't do anything. I've downloaded Kies and re-downloaded the samsung usb drivers, but still nothing? Only the battery charging sign comes on, but it freezes at the battery logo.... When i press volume up, home button and power button, it will load the splash screen, then thats it, it freezes on that... What could the problem be??? What can i do?
download Odin and flash a stock firmware for your region from sammobile, you may need to do a factory reset after. this should bring the phone back to life.
Also a track usually does not void warranty, I had one on my s2 and it went back 3 times no problem

Thank you for your reply.. Do you have the link for the sammobile for o2 uk? I've been looking all over the site for the last week but can't seem to find it!
I have sent it off for repairs, but o2 sent it back to me and said they won't fix it because there is a crack therefore warranty is void now.. So i'm stuck! I was hoping to keep all files on my phone as i lost my dad last week and had loads of pictures of him from a few weeks ago that mean the world to me.. But my phone has been broke for 4 weeks now so i'm pulling my hair out, if need be i will do whatever it takes just to get my phone going again..
I'm a complete noob so please bare with! I've done so much internet research and not really understanding flash and firmware etc.. I have downloaded Odin3 though

Bricked i777 - should I send to MTV for JTAG?

Hi everybody.
I was playing with my i777 and flashed a gallery file (just 1 apk) via CWM. It booted fine but crashed when using the camera and then rebooted. After reboot, it turned off and now I cannot turn it on again.
I tried download mode by removing battery, holding the two volume buttons and connecting to USB. That did nothing. I also tried USB jig which also did nothing. Connecting the phone to AC power source to see if at least the battery charging screen will show up also does nothing.
So the screen remains black with the soft buttons not lighting up. My phone is hard bricked from the looks of it. So my question is will sending this to MobileTechVideos for JTAG have a highly likelihood for unbricking or should I save the $50 and USPS charges and just buy a Nexus 4? I mean if they don't fix it, I will need a new phone anyway, heck I don't even have a spare phone.
Previous ROM was CM 10.1 03062013 nightly.
I don't even understand how that could have resulted in a brick...

I don't either but like I mentioned above. It rebooted ok after CWM flash then hung then android rebooted. It crashed then won't respond to jig, USB, power cable.
I failed to mention that I am afraid that this is an EMMC failure and that they might not be able to fix it and I would be wasting $50.
You say you tried Download mode, but made no mention of RECOVERY. If you can get there you're not bricked.

Nothing works. Not even the charging screen shows up when you plug it in. No button combo is working.

Stuck on LG screen p769BK

I'm so lost n don't know what to. It happened two or three months ago. I've never rooted. I never flashed anything. Nothing. What should I do.
P.s. I'm trying the LG mobile tool. Now.

Sent from my LG-MS770 using xda app-developers app
Turn off your phone. Hold down VOLUME UP and plug it into the USB into your computer. Then, go into LG Mobile Support Tool. Click options, and "Upgrade Recovery" (That's not exactly it but it's like it.) and type in your IMEI code (Found on the white sticker underneath the battery of your phone) and then click "Update/Upgrade." That should work. Be sure that your USB isn't glitchy and doesn't disconnect/reconnect randomly, don't move your phone or computer during process. That should help you!
Now, I won't reply fast or anything, because I'm going to play some Black Ops 2 Zombies! Best of luck and God bless mate!
How long does it normally take after getting to 4%?
