**SO, you got yourself an HTC AMAZE 4G that is UNBRANDED (also referred to as INTERNATIONAL VERSION, ASIA VERSION, Carrier-free, or Factory Unlocked) Congratulations! And welcome to our forum..
Now, if you haven't noticed yet, the Unbranded Amaze comes with stock Gingerbread (GB) as the Android OS. So you look and see that IceCreamSandwich (ICS) was officially released by HTC for the amaze. SO of course you go straight to settings>about phone>update, your so excited to get ICS on your new Amaze, THEN BAM!! Your phone says everything is currently up to date. But how? GUESS WHAT, THERE IS NO OFFICIAL ICS BUILD FOR THE UNBRANDED AMAZE.. Soo THEN you maybe do a little research and learn you can manually flash an ICS RUU to your phone, you just need to find the RUU for your carrier.. BUT wait, oh no, you don't have a Carrier so there is no RUU. THIS is when most people make a common MISTAKE. They decide to Unlock the bootloader an their phone, flash a Custom Recovery, and then flash a custom ICS Rom and think it will be Fine, but when they try to turn on the phone it just get's stuck on the boot logo.. Now begins the freaking out, the obsessive duplicate thread creating, such as "HELP Trying to get ICS on my unbranded Amaze" or "Flashed Custom ICS rom on my Unbranded Amaze running GB 2.3 now phone is stuck on boot logo IF YOUR PHONE IS ON GB, YOU CAN NOT FLASH A CUSTOM ICS ROM UNTIL YOU HAVE FLASHED THE ICS RUU OR FIRMWARE PACKAGE. UNFORTUNATELY, YOU CAN NOT FLASH AN ICS RUU ON AN UNBRANDED AMAZE UNTIL YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THE STEPS IN THE GUIDE BELOW!
ENJOY**
*[GUIDE] Now, i will explain step-by-step how to MANUALLY upgrade from GB to ICS on an UNBRANDED Amaze, and hopefully avoid the headache others are facing.
1.) Make sure you have required HTC drivers installed
2.) Download Hasoon's All-In-One Toolkit
3.) Unlock your bootloader through htcdev.com (hasoon's toolkit can help)
4.) Now perform S-Off. You have to be on Stock Ruu to perform S-OFF, so best to do it now while you are still on stock
5.) Once you successfully S-OFF your device, you will then need to SuperCID your device
6.) When your device is S-Off and has SuperCID, you can then download this Amaze_ICS_RUU ..Rename the RUU to PH85IMG.zip and place it on the root of your EXTERNAL SDcard. Once this file is on the SDcard, do a battery pull, then turn the device back on while holding down the VOLUME DOWN button. it will prompt you to install, select yes and YAY, you will now be on ICS.
7.) Take the PH85IMG of the RUU off of your SDcard, and then put this PH85IMG of HBOOT on to the SDcard. Repeat the same instructions as step 6 to flash this IMG.
8.) Congratulations, you now have stock ICS. If you would like to flash custom ICS or JB roms, continue with steps 9 & 10
9.) Finally, Use Hasoon's toolkit to, Flash 4EXT Recovery AND
10.) Then to flash supersu.zip to gain root (also done using hasoons toolkit)
OH AND ALSO, you weren't thinking about creating a new thread asking anything about this topic were you? I hope not, seeing as all these people already did. these were all found only on pages 1-6!!! I didnt even have to use the search feature...

If you have already made the mistake of unlocking and trying to flash an ICS rom while still on GB, you can do the following to get back to GB and have a working device.
ATTENTION - Before continuing past this point, You must first have 4ext installed as your recovery if the device is S-Off.(you can use hasoons AIO toolkit to do this.) Once you have 4ext flashed, boot into recovery and in the settings Enable Smartflash
1) Download this GB rom
2) Next, Place the the downloaded file on your sd card.
3) Now Boot into 4ext recovery (battery pull, then start phone while holding down the power+VolumeDown buttons simultaneously).
4) Once in recovery, go to the Wipe/Format section and select "Format all partitions except SDcard"
5) Finally, after formating completes, verify that you have SmartFlash enabled & then flash the Rom you just downloaded from above..
Once this is complete, you should once again have a working device.
Please use this thread for any related questions/comments you may have so we can try and keep the forums a little more organized and clean. THANK YOU

Done the Mistake? now what to do?
Hi there,
I have done the same mistake that is mentioned in the start of this post. I have unlocked the bootloader. Flashed the custom 4EXT recovery and without doing the S-OFF thing (pardon me for doing this) but i tried to install the CM 10 ruby NIGHLTY rom. At first my mobile (Htc Amaze 4G) stuck during boot at the white htc screen. I then read many posts but none of them help as i am totally a newbee on this issue. Then I some who came to know that I must have not wiped out the previous data due to which this problem has occurred. So i went to wipe through the recovery and wiped Cache, Delvik Cache, performed system wipe and finally the factory reset. Then i rebooted the phone in recovery mode and flashed the CM10 rom. To my surprise it installed completely and when i rebooted the phone it booted up quite normally with Cyanogen mod ROM but stuck into a boot start loop. Moreover the gsm did not work on it. Please Help from here when i dont have my stock ROM in back up so really need you help please.

Please refer to post 2 to make your device useable again. You can not use any ICS Rom or higher if your device is still on GB. Period. No other solutions, no workarounds. You must first flash an official ICS RUU to update the firmware.

Hi, aj_2423,
I have followed the instructions that you gave in post # 2. I have 4EXT as my custom recovery. I have SMART EXT FLASH enabled but when i tried to use the command "format all partitions (except sdcard)" i noticed that there is an error which said
"Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure!
Skipping format...
Data wipe complete.
All partitions formatted."
I just want to ask that is this normal or i have to do something else to remove this problem.

Hi the first thing you should do is take some time and READ the steps above first. Also i think youtube has videos you can watch.
Just type in 'htc amaze root' or something.
Dont worry if its not "your type" of amaze...they are all the same except fr the ruu and radios, just become familiar.
Build some confidence come back and follow the steps.
Honestly its not that hard and once you are comfortable its easy actually. Read through some of the other steps even though it doesnt relate to your type of amaze. Im sure aj wil chime in but read up first!!! Hasoons kit really simplifies stuff.
Again reas EVEYTHING THROUGH FIRST lol youll save your self hadaches later.

I used the HTC dev tool to unlock bootloader then I installed revoloution recovery and then took mikRunny ROM for gsm and flashed it revo recovery . Rebooted and it stayed on the HTC white screen , I didn't read the change log and notice there was a post on page 4 that said replace Boot.img in kernal shootru with Boot.7z but I did not realize it was a 7zip file . So I just put the boot.7z in retryed still didn't work I read a post the next page sense I had s-on to flash through fast boot so I tryed flashing through flash boot with this command (fast boot flash boot boot.7z) it didn't work so I was like hmm I renamed the 7zip file not realizing it was one at the time . So I renamed the file boot.7z to boot.img and flashed it with fastboot and rebooted phone and all did was go to the white HTC screen and keeps rebooting .
Well I made a back up right after I used HTC dev tool and installed a recovery . Thinking I was ok I could just wipe and flash my backup it be fine. Well I restored back up and it still stays on white HTC screen and reboots .
So I know its not bricked because I can get into recovery . So I am asking for someone's help to help me just get the phone back to normal .
Thanks. I hope I explained this good enough for you guys .

You are correct, the phone is not bricked. I see you are in the US, why did you flash a GSM rom? You need to flash a CDMA rom. Also, you have to flash kernel separately if using HTC unlock method.

You may need to flash the stock RUU (rom update utility) which if your sprint/cdma (codename "shooter" not "shooterU") the zip version can be loaded automatically by Hboot when it starts. You rename the zip to exactly " PG86IMG.zip " and put on the root of sdcard, boot to hboot/bootloader and let it do its thing. You wont be able to do the .exe version from windows if the phone wont boot to android (I think).
Not sure what version you had on the phone prior, but here's the link to get it:

I find it hard to believe that there is no step-by-step out there, so I'm just going to assume that I'm really bad at internet searching and apologize for posting a question that surely must be answered somewhere out there...
I ultimately want to try out the newest ICS leak (depending on whether Flash works on it?), but it seems that the best first step is to get S-Off on my rooted, stock Gingerbread Rezound.
But I can't find a simple step-by-step instruction set anywhere... Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I downloaded a toolkit from hasoon2000 that's supposed to make things easy, but I don't know what to do with it.
hasoon2000 links to instructions that only show a video and assume I know how to use something called Juopunutbear(?).
It seems that every tidbit of information I can find is only partial...
Where can I find a step-by-step, beginning-to-end guide to get S-Off for a rooted Rezound? Am I missing something?
Prerequisites
- Must be on a stock Gingerbread ROM OR The 3.14.605.5 ICS Leak <---- NO OTHER ICS LEAKS BUT THIS ONE!
- Must be HTCDev unlocked
- Must be rooted
1. Install HTC Drivers
2. Go to www.HTCDev.com
2a. Follow instructions and unlock your bootloader/Device.
2b. flash a rooted rom/gain root access
3. Get a fresh microSD card or backup yours because s-off will delete everything on it.
4. After unlocking run the toolkit which will push you through s-off(Juno-w/e)
4a. Get a length of insulated wire about 8 or so inches, then when the Toolkit cmd prompt says to, ground it outThe pins you touch are in this picture.
5. If it worked, you'll be s-off'd, install a recovery & rom.
If still confused just ask, I'll try my best to walk you through it.

The instructions are detailed on the unlimited.io site...

When we speak of this "leak" for the rezound that means that we took ics 4.0 from another phone and ported it over.. so what is the leak vs porting it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the leaks are not ported and they ARE for the Rezound. When the ota comes, I don't think it will be much different from what we have now (3.14.605.10).
I believe the source will have to be dropped for AOSP.

The Rezound is getting Sense 3.6 with it's OTA update, the newer HTC ICS based phones are getting Sense 4.0.
The leaks are Sense 3.6 builds specific for the Rezound, the ports are Sense 4.0 based roms for other phones made to work on the Rezound.
So what exactly is the benefit to S-OFF? I tried to do it, but bricked my rezound. Luckily, Verizon exchanged it as DOA, and so I'm all good for now.

Easier flashing (don't have to create a ph98img.zip file any more) edit boot screen (my favorite reason) and be able to flash between different firmwares (this is a big deal).
Hmmm. Well, I've done all that with S-ON. I've got a custom ROM, custom recovery, custom boot animation (a JB one posted somewhere on this site), and the ICS leaked firmware. I don't remember using PH98IMG.ZIP (rather it was other zips), though I was pretty excited to play with a new phone, so I could be forgetting. Actually, now that I'm thinking more on it, I did flash the PH98IMG.ZIP when I put CleanROM on the phone, and so I suppose that also put the updated firmware on it.

The ability to do Nandroid restores and have it flash the boot.img without needing any help scripts or doing it manually via fastboot was my main reason for doing it..

By "edit boot screen" he meant the splash screen before the boot animation (the blindingly bright white HTC screen). This can't be changed without having S-OFF.
The PH98IMG.zip you flashed with CleanROM was to update the kernel, not your firmware. Since you are S-ON, it won't install the boot.img in recovery during the ROM flash, so it uses a separate file to flash it in the bootloader. Otherwise, no boot.img = phone isn't booting (obviously).

I used the control bear s off tool tonight, after many, many...many times I finally got s-off. But now the only thing I have is the modified boot loader. I tried too use adb to push recovery and boot images and it would say success, but would actually never boot into them, it would just stay on the white and green HTC screen. Any help is appreciated of course, I just need to get booted up.

IMHO...no need to unlock it, so keep it locked.

Fortunately, I'm starting with a rooted Rezound already.
3. Blank microSD is no problem.
4. I don't know what "run the toolkit" means... or what "Juno" means. The top middle button of the toolkit I downloaded just refers me to webpages with confusing instructions and a broken video link (found the video elsewhere). I don't know which toolkit button I'm supposed to push, and nothing tells me which one helps me get S-Off. So... This is where I'm stuck.

I'm sure the correct info is at that link, but there's so much information... And it seems like everyone refers to the same things by different names? ... JuopunutBear? ControlBear? But I'm not sure? It just isn't written for people who don't understand this stuff...

Thanks for taking a few moments to help me out with this, everyone.

ON the toolkit...isn't there a "Run Juopunutbear V.6If....." in the left hand box? Run the one that corresponds to the firmware you have. You have GB so run the first one. Make sure you have read and know how to do the wire trick.
JuopunutBear is the name of the group that developed the s-off process...ControlBear is the name of the program file that is run to achieve it. Hansoons tool apparently downloads the programs you need to do everything. Follow the steps.
If you don't understand the terms bootloader, hboot, recovery..Read up on them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641670
Don't worry about flashing a new hboot, just keep the one you have when you're done.
Also, I found it helpful to have a computer that could read the SD card. Just in case you need to download something to it for you phone.
Thanks for the update... So here are the simple instructions I'm following now:
1. - 2. Root device.
3. Backup microSD.
4. Select "Run Juopunutbear v.6 If You Are On Gingerbread" in Hasoon2000's S-Off toolkit, then click Run
5. Use insulated wire to connect Pin 1 and GND for two seconds when cmd prompt says "Do wire-trick now!! Look instructions at web"
... So what happens next? Does my device reboot as usual? Do I have to re-unlock? Re-root? Re-install amon recovery? In other words... Did it change anything other than giving me S-Off and wiping the microSD card?

Getting there.
The wire trick..DON'T touch the contacts for 2 seconds. Touch them TWICE in 1.75 seconds. Example...touch..1.75s......touch.... Hold the wire firmly down in the hole to insure contact and just touch the gnd twice.
AFter, you do have to reinstall amon recovery...DON"T UNLOCK... no reason to. Again, it is a good backup to have a SD card reader available.
EDIT: If you want to be able to use fastboot commands after, then you do need to flash the Joupunut Hboot that is offered to you at the end of the process. I didn't. I just find flashable files for my needs.
Apologies in advance but a bit of a newbie question......
I am the recent new owner of an HTC One X+ on the UK Vodafone network and am keen to get Andorid Revolution HD 6.2 running on it rather than the stock setup.
My system as it stands is as follows:-
Android version: 4.1.1
HTC Sense version: 4+
Software number: 1.14.161.18
Kernel version: 3.1.10-g262c6aa
HBOOT: 1.30.0000
CID (Via CID Getter): VODAP001
I have unlocked the bootloader (S-ON) via htcdev.com and gained SuperSU status and flashed TWRP International thanks to hasoon2000's excellent All-In-One Toolkit v2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994961) and am now a little worried about taking the next step I guess!
I have the ARHD 6.2 rar file downloaded, the flash_boot_6.x_0.1.rar to flash boot.img and I have also downloaded the firmware (1.17.401.1.zip) as per the requirements according to mike1986. from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995685).
My plan is to use hasoon2000's Toolkit to flash the boot.img, run the wipe command via TWRP (do I also need to upgrade the firmware using the 1.17.401.1.zip via TWRP - and how do I go about that with no writeable SD card) and then ADB sideload the Android Revolution HD 6.2 ROM but I am hanging fire on this process until I can get a little reassurance that this is the correct approach and will work, I think it's the virtual SD card and the fact I cannot actually have the files sat on an SD card that is making me a little apprehensive.
I hope I'm on the right lines because I was very happy with my Desire HD with Android Revolution HD on it prior to my upgrade and am looking forward to getting back to using the most popular ROM on my new phone!
Any help would be muchly appreciated......and please tell me if any of the above is likely to cause me problems!!
you can not use the firmware zip from mike1986.
you have a Vodafone branded Phone. there are no Updates for hboot.

Thanks skdubg,
yeah i had looked at that and that was my main concern.
so since mike's rom requires hboot 1.35 i have to wait for vodafone to release a software update from hboot 1.30 to 1.35?
were this to happen would i then be in a position to flash a custom rom (provided the CID appeared on the list of course) or is the fact it's a branded phone a complete sticking point?

As long as you have the latest hboot you can flash any custom rom. It's not your CID preventing it. Problem is vodaphone does not usually release RUU's and if you flash a custom rom and end up with glitches/errors because you have an older hboot. There is no way to return to stock (except a nandroid).

Thanks for the explanation AndroHero, I was under the impression if things didn't match up entirely then there was a risk of bricking.
So my best plan of action would be:-
1. Create a full nandroid of my system as it stands from TWRP
2. Flash the boot.img relating to the custom rom
3. Sideload and flash the custom rom through the All-In-One Toolkit
4. See how I get on!
Either that or stick with stock I guess...
Yeah you shouldnt run into too many issues doing it that way. There is a million in one chance of bricking your phone flashing a rom with any hboot. Infact while S-On doing anything wont "brick" your phone. As long as you have a backup to return too. You'll be fine
You dont need to "sideload" the rom, just boot into android on your voda rom, connect to pc, and copy the rom .zip to the root of the device that appears.

Cool, well that makes me feel a bit more confident about going further, thanks.
I would usually take that route but with the "virtual sd" i seem to be having issues writing directly to the device through windows explorer despite the device appearing it tells me the "Device has either stopped responding or been disconnected" every time I attempt to copy straight to the internal storage - that's the only reason why I'm thinking I need to "sideload" the rom.zip
Hey Guys,
I just bought a brand new HTC Amaze unbranded (without any carrier branding). Now I tried updating the phone to ICS but unfortunately no official ICS update is available. I have a version where I get to choose south asian languages at start up, I don't know if this would help.
Anyways, I tired rooting my phone through the following method:
1- Unlocked the bootloader via HTCDev method.
2- Flashed the 4eXT recovery via Hasoon2000 tool kit, after which I had the SuperSU app on my phone.
3- Flashed Cyanogenmod 10 Nightly ROM (Latest available on their website).
The installation was successful, however when the phone boots up to the Home screen it works fine for precisely 10secs and then it freezes and reboots and this happens until I remove the battery. However if the phone boots up to the Home page and I do not unlock the phone it would not go off, but will freeze and reboot once I unlock!!. My phone is still S-ON. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix it.
Thanks

OK there is one more thing that I tried while I was waiting for a solution, I downloaded a Stock ICS RUU and renamed it to PH85IMG.zip and then boot it to HBOOT where it picked up the file and started installing, after install it was stuck on the HTC logo. Now as per your suggestion I suggestion I should simply download a GB Stock and flash it the same way I did with the ICS RUU correct?....and would you have a recommendation which one should I flash?

Just a FYI ravike14, I already have the 4EXT recovery on my phone, if you refer to my previous post....should I install the recovery once again and then go with the method described?
Oh and I even downloaded a Shipped GB ROM for Amaze which was in a .exe format and try to flash it, but it gave me an error 107 USB something error.

OK I tried once again and was sucessful flashing the ROM!!! ...thanks alot man for all your help really appreciate it!
First and foremost I want to say what I don't see a lot of from newbs around here: "Thank You". I have lurked this website for months, trying to learn the right way to do all sorts of things and I think you are all awesome for taking time out of your lives to do all of this for us.
I really hope that my questions aren't stupid and I can learn a little something from this in the process
I have read, and researched and read and researched and I think in all of my reading I have just gotten myself REALLY confused.
Here is my device:
Evo 3D (shooter) CDMA
Hboot 1.58
unlocked
S-ON
It took a lot of doing but I successfully rooted and lived in stock happy as a clam for a few days.
I first tried to install PAC rom [Halo + Android 4.2.2] and got numerous install errors (which I now believe is from installing in 4ext instead of fastboot)
so I tried CM 10.1 ...
I was stuck in a bootloop with CM 10.1 (which I now have learned may be secondary to the Hboot being the wrong version)
I decided I was in over my head and went to look for my ROM manager recovery (which was apparently lost on my internal mem), but I can't find my CWM recovery either [I preformed them both using the ROM manager app, right after root NOT in fastboot]
I attempted to boot another ROM which I thought was compatible with Hboot 1.58 (Team dirt unoffical slimbean v1.1) made sure I got my gapps right...and Im still stuck in bootloop (now just of slimbean instead of CM)
So I said screw it and tried to install the RUU after relocking and start over. But I keep getting an error message that my hboot version is wrong.
Finally, what I am looking for help with is the following:
1. Help to fix bootloop as I would like to really try the PACMAN Rom
2. Help to determine what the RUU error is so that I can return to stock rooted if I don't like PACMAN
3. Where the F*** are my recoveries????
4. Just a little bit of sympathy: I acknowledge that I am a newb but I have read, read and read some more and quite frankly am terrified of getting screamed at for missing something simple. Please believe this was my last option because I now that right now I am merely soft bricked and don't want to turn a nice phone into a paperweight (Which is why I haven't tried the URT tool yet, to downgrade Hboot, Im nervous that Ill really mess up)
I am sorry to be so wordy... but you all say be detailed and as a Paramedic I'm just trying to give you the best "past medical history" possible.
Thank you guys again for all you do to help us not so tech savy...
please let me know what (if any) more info is needed or requested.
Be safe,
Doc
I can only answer 1 question and that is to why you can't get any cm10+ roms to work and that is because your running hboot 1.58. Jellybean roms do not work on hboot 1.57 or 1.58. You must downgrade your hboot before you can run anything jellybean. But first you have to use the juopunutbear exploit to s-off your device and flash a new hboot. Here's the link to the thread I used. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24530433
Sent from my Evo V 4G using Tapatalk 4 Beta
the RUU error is probably because you are trying to run a gingerbread RUU. with your hboot, only ICS RUUs will work for now. If you have taken the March OTA (2.95.651.5) then there is no RUU that will work for you until you downgrade mainver.
This guide has all the instructions if you want to s-off and downgrade (there are some additional instructions for people who have taken the march ota)
if you choose to do the juopunutbear exploit you'll need ubuntu linux (or an ubuntu livecd)
As others have said you need a lower hboot for anything other than ics.
To do that you need s off.
To get s off you need a booting Rom.
You need to do the following
Install 4ext recovery (highly recommended)
Enable smart flash in 4ext, this is because you're still s on
Now flash a stock based Rom, butterz, negalite blu, or stock
Now you need to follow instructions to obtain s off.
Good luck
