As you all know, our LGOG doesn't really have any LED functionality. I really miss this as I had gotten super used to relying on it for info on my old Atrix. So I was browsing the general Android Apps section today and saw something that tries to help with this!
NoLED
I am linking to the original post as I don't want to steal any credit, just wanted to post it since I didn't see it here and didn't want anyone to miss it!
I'm currently downloading it to try it and will report back. Give it a try!

It should only be used for Amoled screens. On Amoled screens black pixels are not lit up so battery usage is minimal (still a lot though). On our LCD screens the whole screen would light up, most likely killing our batteries in hours. I haven't actually tried that app but that's what I'm guessing would happen.

It's been brought up before in The Base thread a while back. You're right, the whole screen lights up. Quite a few wake locks. Not battery friendly. Personally, I would not recommend it. But give it a chance.
OP, there are a couple alternatives in this section, if you haven't already seen them, that are worth giving a shot, as well.

I didn't realize the AMOLED vs LED thing. But yeah i noticed it seemed pretty bright when I tried it. I ended up uninstalling it because I just didn't like how it looked.

Check out superdim (root), its in the market for free, it works amazingly well. I always noticed the atrix was particularly bright even at its lowest setting. I never *****ed because I was just happy to have a bright screen visible in daylight. Now we have best of both worlds.

Sweet! thanks
AdjBrightness works well too.
Nice, I will have to check these out. The blindingly bright "dim" setting was one of my pet peeves with the Atrix!
I have check it now, and it works like a charm, very low bright. excellent.

Thanks! I was actually just noticing that super dim didn't stay dark. What a great idea
Edit: I noticed that super dim actually darkens the screen while this new deal simply puts a dark patch over the screen. That's the difference between root and no root lol
Ps use both for super reading mode!

I've been using Elixir which does all sorts of stuff but one of the options is a tggle widget that lets you shuffle through up to 5 brightness settings. I use Auto, 5%, 12%, 40%, and 60%.

Well after playing with screen filter, I'm not crazy about it after all. It does nothing to the backlight but puts a grey tint to everything which makes it hard to read at the lower levels.
However, I've been emailing the author of superdim. He's already put out a version with the home screen profile shortcuts I asked for.. wish more devs were that responsive!

If you talk to him again tell him his app rocks and he's got the atrix communities thumbs up.
Side note I somehow got the dimness to stick through a screen off. Start at boot would be nice tho..

I actually just found him here. [APP] Superdim
It seems like the brightness after wake sticks as long as it's at 20 or above. It's like 20 equates to 0% in phone settings.
It's funny, most noticeable at 0. Hit the power button to shut the display off, and you notice it gets brighter before turning off.
Just tested this on my MT3GS, I can set it at 0 and it stays there. Even after a reboot.
[EDIT]
Working with the dev some more, I think he's got this fixed in the next beta! It restores the dim settings after wake! Stay tuned!
Seems to be fixed... my phones lowest is 30... very weird

I consider it a feature..I can accidentally set my phone face up at night without a notification lighting up the whole room and waking me up. It's all in how you look at it I guess!

I agree that it's not very noticeable and I like being able to see it. One of the smaller issues I have to complain about right now though.
i agree, does not light up the whole room. My old EVO used to do that. uggg
I want to know when the light is going to work at least how it says in the manual
Okay thought it was only me. Yeah other than that I love this phone especially how fast it charges!
Yeah I thought the same thing when I first got my photon, I don't mind it though, and your right it does charge super fast,

Well, until you mentioned it.................Yes, its low unless I'm actually looking at the phone (and this likely saves battery?) BUT, as stated, I dont want my bedroom glowing when I'm sleeping either. Not like I would get up and actually check it anyway!
While freezing some bloatware I came across a NFC app installed on the system. Its a pretty small app but thought that was pretty interesting. Now to monkey around and try and figure out how to launch it.
On a seperate note the s pen sucks so far. Way off center. I used an international one a few days ago and it was spot on. What could be different?
How do you freeze apps? im kinda a noob. anyway i noticed the s pen is off. And i can't find any calibration.
I have an issue with the spen as well.its off buy 1/8 of an inch. I don't see where to calibrated it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
I agree, I was playing with the s-pen in the memo program and was disappointed that it's not accurate. In my case, when looking at the grid and tapping the screen with the s-pen, the resulting mark is almost a full square higher than where I actually tap. I was poking around the menus to find a calibration tool for it but didn't see anything.
Is it accurate for you guys or also off?

I use an app called root uninstaller. It allows you to freeze or uninstall any app so you do need to be very careful.
Sorry this is about the pen calibration posts a couple of posts up. Forgot to hit quote...
I had this problem until I switched to left-handed mode somewhere in the pen settings (I'm a lefty). Don't know if that will help you but made a huge difference for me.

I've had my Evo for 1.5 weeks now and last Thursday I started having an odd flickering issue with the screen. On any light colors, ie pictures, lighter app backgrounds...you can see the colors flickering as if the refresh rate isn't quick enough. It's not the whole screen, only the area of color that the screen doesn't like. It started with only on max brightness, but now I can notice it on 50% brightness. I'm assuming this isn't normal and I should exchange my phone? Thanks.
Completely stock rom unrooted.
Sounds like bad backlight, replace.
I have noticed this as well. Especially going to the Play Store. The odd part is that it doesn't show up within games, at least for me.
If you turn off auto backlight does it happen? I think I see what appears to be flicker but it is the backlight adjusting. Happens when I first turn the screen on as the weather comes in. Also, it happens when I go back and forth from my messaging app to the homescreen. It is like the backlight is adjusting the brightness slightly. If I turn off auto brightness I get nothing.

Mine is not set on auto. It does it when I manually set it to around 60 percent or higher. It's not obnoxious but it is obvious on lighter colors. Light grays, some whites, light blues. Otherwise my phone is perfect and I hesitate to take it back in case a replacement brings a worse problem. I just wonder if it is something that would get worse. It has stayed the same so far.

FYI to OP and anyone else who may see the flicker. After doing a little reading it looks like the One X was plagued with this as well. HTC released an OTA that seems to have fixed the issue. You can follow a lot of the progress regarding it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597448
Looks like it was the exact same thing that I have noticed on my device. To save you some reading, you can skip to the last 10 pages or so and see that the update they sent out fixed most peoples issues. Hopefully they will have one pushed for us at some point.
Thanks for the link. so now I don't know if I hold onto my phone and hope for an update, or go and exchange for a new one.
I want to root my phone, but not until this screen flicker is taken care of!
I ONLY have this issue in the stock messaging app. Never any other time! It's so odd. But I'm not worried because of the fact that it's isolated to an app.

I'd say maybe message HTC support and let them know so that if they aren't aware already they will be.

i get a weird flicker too, but its like the app closes real fast and opens back up at lightning speed.
it doesnt look hardware related, just software.

I'm having this issue too. I've only seen it maybe a half dozen times and it's always been while typing a text message if I remember correctly. Mine is just like a brief millisecond blur.
so am I one of the VERY few having this issue? It looks like it's ALL OVER the One X forums, but no one is saying anything here. Most of the replies in this thread don't sound like my issue either, but the majority of the OneX complaints sound exactly like my issue. It's isolated to lighter colors, especially grays. It gets worse as my brightness is turned up. For example, if I look at a picture, only the blues may flicker, while the rest of the picture is solid.
Anyone?

I am having what you are having. I did get a reply back from HTC. It was a generic reply and one of the things they suggested was to do a battery pull. This was an email I sent to the EVO 4G LTE specific thread. I just sort of laughed it off. Mine hasn't become any worse and everything else on my device is perfect, even the color balance settled in, so I just decided to hang on to it and maybe they will fix it in an update like they did with the One X.
great to see a new thread picking up more attention than the one i started. i noticed this on my first evo and replaced it twice! all three had/have the screen flicker. i strongly believe its software related like others have mentioned, so dont give up on it yet
I just got my first gs3 5 days ago. Love it, but yesterday i noticed a dot on the screen in the lower left quadrant. I could only see it when the screen was off and under direct light. I tried cleaning it, but it was still there, i could also feel a little abrasion when i ran my finger over it. So i take it back to best buy, tell them what's up and they swap it out, no problem. The guy said it could have been either an air bubble in the screen, or the chip could have over heated causing a "blister" to raise up. "Weird cause I've only had it for a few days, and haven't even rooted it yet" So i get it, had to go to work right after so i didn't have much time to play with it. I wake up this morning and i notice that when the screen is on a black background, like the messaging app, or something similar, i can see a "darker" dot in around the same place where i had the problem on my last one, i can also see several other smaller ones around the screen. The dots are easy more noticeable when i turn the brightness up. This is the 16 gig Sprint model, is anyone else having similar issues with their phones? I'm going to go back up there tomorrow to try and swap it out again, hopefully they don't give me and flak about it.

Not every screen has this. However over time every screen will have the problem. As far as I can tell I have none. Plus the other model that I had also didn't have any dots that I could see. I know it could have also been minimal. but it is a known issue with these screens has the other poster stated. Worth returning over? I don't think so.
I could understand having this problem a year down the road, but 1 day after first turning on the phone! That sounds a little much. I think I'll try returning it one more time...maybe 3rd times a charm?

That's AMOLED for ya. If you only see one dot...you're lucky. Hope you don't get one with 5 or more.
The dots/bleed marks should NOT be more visible when you turn the brightness up, they should be less visible at higher brightness.
Take it back, get another one. Keep doing it until you're satisfied.

Also I have an ATT model. I checked a friends and I didn't see any one his as well. He also had ATT. Not that it matters much just saying.
Also you can use this app...CHange your brightness up as far as you would like to help check for the dots/ink...

Great small app. Also helps to see if you have any dead pixels!
hope this helps you out...
Cheers...
Thanks for the app recommendation. Tried it and didn't see any dead pixels or dots on any of the screens. In fact, i can't see the dots that i did before! I don't know if it's because it's brighter out versus when i was looking last night? I guess I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days and see if it gets worse. Would this problem get worse over time or is this just something that is there and will always be there? Thanks.

I would have kept the first one, if you're critical enough you can find some kind of a defect in any phone.

From what I understand it can get worse as time goes on. same with any burn ins and so on. Again this is what I understand. By the this time next year I will be replacing this device anyways in most cases unless nothing good comes out.
i wouldn't worry about it if its gone. Could it have been some type of bleed effect or something? I don't know. I'd just watch it for now. Check it so often. If you end up not minding it (If there even if an issue..) then i would keep the device. At higher brightness settings is when you can see it from my understanding. Again I could be 100% wrong. Wouldn't be the first time!
Cheers...
