Hi, not sure whether this should be in the apps or the questions thread. But since it's a question...
Are there any camera apps that can produce uncompressed TIFF images (or another uncompressed format)? JPGs are all fine and well, but getting at the RAW data is always better...
Many thanks

Camera FV-5 has an option for lossless PNG. It's a paid app, though...

hey guys.
is either photo format better than the other? my tv unfortunately can't reproduce either .mpo or .jps, but i wonder if either one can give a better image simply because it'll compress less or something.
what about video format? I would assume .mp4 is a better format? my tv thankfully plays both formats just fine, so i've been watching my videos on it. i can't tell a difference between a format and the other, but haven't done extensive comparisons yet.
any other suggestions on how to get the best image quality for pictures and/or videos on this phone are welcome
I really wouldn't say there is a best format... would really depend on the device you are viewing on.
But I put Inception in 3D on my phone. Was a MP4 file but .m4v extension.
I've switched to using .jps as my standard 3D image format, because when viewed in a standard image viewer on a non-3D setup it displays as two side-by-side images (whereas .mpo simply won't display in most 2D image viewers).
I haven't noticed any difference between the image quality of the two formats.
thanks for the info. i'll use .jps and .mp4 then. hopefully samsung will update the firmware to support either photo format soon
Hey guys. Alot of these roms are 200mb's+ and i was wondering how to highly compress stuff? Ive seen files being cut in half from 200mb to 100mb and sometimes less. But i cant cant anything to do this. 7zip is garbage and only makes a 12.4mb file into a 12.3.. no point in compressing it. Ive also see a jpg compressed file go from 2gb to 500mb.. I would really like some help.. 7zip, winrar, and windows standard zip are all terrible. Although 7zip does the best, its still bad and they are 2008 programs.. 1 year in technology and programing is outdated and we have 10 times better things
Doesn't quite work the way you believe, and modern compression is nearly exactly the same as what we were using 1, 2 and even 5 years ago.
JPEG is a lossy compression method (you lose quality and gain compressibility, this is fine for a photo). MP3 is quite the same, and it is also generally fine for music. For files such as drivers, scripts, kernels and the such, we need lossless compression. This uses redundancy to compress, and once extracted you'll have exactly the same file as you did before (ie, no loss in quality). This is the same as FLACs and PNGs, for example. Compressing an already compressed jpeg will do practically nothing, it's already compressed. As with mp3s and flacs.
Text files and some binaries are often not compressed though. As a result, throwing a 20mb text file into 7zip will probably turn it into 3mb or so with moderate compression. If there is something to compress in a folder full of files (such as ROM files or even .zips), you will notice filesize will drop. For example, i half the size of my NANDROIDs by compressing them as .rars when i store them on my computer.
It's all about knowing what to compress and how. 7zip is a great compressor and is still very widely used today. For some good reads, Lossless and Lossy data compression.
Hello all. I have tons of movies that I'm interested in transferring over to my note. I noticed that I couldn't do it on the fly using Kies air. It says it only caps it at 400mb or something. I'm wondering if anybody knows of a great video converter (paid or free) that's easy to use so I can add some movies to my note. I have blurays so one that can convert them as well would be useful.
For my DVD library I've been using DVD Decrypter to rip the discs to the hard drive and then WinX Free VD to MP4 to convert them. I turn the gain up on the audio, and encode the highest audio quality possible. Seemed to me on lower settings, the audio gets away from the video a bit. Not sure if that's exactly what you meant, but hope it helps.
I don't know what I am doing differently than you guys, but if I plug my phone in and drag and .avi file to my phones memory or the SD card, windows will prompt me to convert for my phone or just copy as is... If I choose convert it will auto resize for the notes screen. One file takes about 14 mins to convert / copy. The only thing I have done is installed Samsung's USB drivers.. Screenie below
Why do you use Kies to add content to your note? when transferring large files to my devices its much much faster to do it via USB rather than hogging up bandwidth using WiFi--and there's no limit !!
When I do want to use WiFi, I don't use Kies. I use Airdroid but still, only for smaller file sizes for the same reason as above.
I dont rip DVDs anymore but back in the day I used to use vob to avi to rip and nandub to add the sound. quality was always great but I haven't ripped any DVDs in like 7yrs. I buy DVDs to watch on my TV and I ******** them from ******* to watch on my devices.

That's interesting. I wonder if it'll work with mkv. files. Also, BR movies are around 5-10gigs so I don't know if windows converts them to a smaller size or just adjust the screen to fit the note.

I guess since it's over wifi I imagined it would still be somewhat fast transfer. Also why are those words deleted out of your posts?? Serious question?
I can't say for BR movies but I do know that it will take anything above the notes resolution and convert it to fit (which reduces file size as well) The Biggest movie I have on the note is 890meg converted. The pre-converted file was 3.8gig with screen ratio of 16:9 (1920x1080). When I check the process that's doing the converting it's Windows Media Player. I would imagine if you have the codecs installed on your pc and wmp can access them it would convert anything automatically.
Edit: Just checked, yeah mkv files will convert, the codec package I had installed on my machine is "Sharks codec's for Windows 7" -> http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html
If any when anyone install's those pay attention to the installer, even though they are free, the dev tries to sneak in a couple toolbars (ask / bing) so be sure and not install that extra bloat, unless you want it of course.

didn't work for me, lol, maybe there's something else to the process.
I have USB Debugging turned off as well..

Is it possible to have the phone save images as raw files instead of compressing them? I've been playing a little with HDR photography and would really like to play with the uncompressed images.
Cheers!
What is the best way to record, edit.. and maybe compress videos (on android) to store on PC or upload on internet.
Sorry for the noob question: Is a good idea to compress an mp4 file? Can I compress (lossy way) an mp4 video?
Or should I set a lower quality in camera setting?
1080p generates very big files.. And I can't send via mail/whatsapp or uploading to facebook takes too much time.
What is the best resolution/quality/size compromise on Stock Galaxy S3 camera?
Is there a way to edit (append) many video into a single file in a lossless way (android or pc)?
I hope you understand what i need..

1. Idk if u can compress it but I think u can.
2. For me I use 6 MP instead of 8 MP so tat my picture will end up bigger in 6 mp than in 8 mp.
3. Are u thinking of combining the videos into one or?

1. Yes but maybe i can set a lower quality while i record video, maybe it is the same result
2. Sorry, I meant video recording settings: I use 1080p and best quality.. But video files are too big. Is there a more efficent way to record video?
3. Combine more videos in on video.

1+2. There is no other way to decrease the video size unless u reduce the pixels or quality.
3. If u are using windows, use windows movie maker. Mac: Shld be iMovie. Linux: OpenShot or others.

1+2: I'm looking for a guide, an article, a post where is analyzed the best settings/quality/size ration.
3: It seems that Movie Maker is too lossy, am i wrong?
