Help - My S2 keeps on rebooting after some update yesterday - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since yesterday my phone keeps on rebooting, i dont remember exactly but there was some update and now my phone just keeps on rebooting.
It would start with the Samsung Logo, go on to load android, and finally land at the pattern lock.
Then after 5 to 10 seconds it would just reboot without any message or error.
I tried to uninstall a few softwares like 'skype' , 'swype keyboard' , etc but no use.
What I have noticed is the phone gets very hot , it wasn't that hot before.
I tried changing the battery with another phone, switching off wifi, switching off packet data, uninstall anything I can find which is not needed, but still no use.
I have installed cyanogenmod in it and the phone is also rooted (I did both of these before a year)
Any one else having this issue ?
Recovery Mode and download mode both work fine. (The phone doesn't get restarted in these modes)
If nothing would work I have to factory reset the phone from the recovery mode. (Which also I dont know how to do)
I have some very important images in my gallery (in sdcard most probably) which I desperately need. (i am unsure if factory reset from recovery mode would retain the photos or they would be deleted)
Any guidance please.
Thanks.

You can pull those images from your sdcard with adb when you're in recovery mode.

I did the adb part and connected my phone but I cant find my sdcard, it seems as it is not mounted.
/mnt/ doesnt exist
/sdcard and /sdcard1 are empty
I tried a lot to navigate and find the sdcard but still I cant find it,
Can someone please guide me how to find and mount the sdcard to copy the images.
Then I can factory reset the phone from recovery mode.
Thanks

I don't know. What are all the folders? Use ls command in adb shell.

If I select factory reset from the recovery mode, will it clear my sdcard contents as well.
I did factory reset once from within android and it retained my sdcard as it is so will be it be the same in recovery mode also ?
Any one have any experience in this please share.
I have installed cyanogenmod recovery.
Thanks

[Q] Need help to recover pics / vids at recovery console

Hi everyone,
My first post so please be gentle!
I'm running rooted stock JI6 with RyanZa OCLF.
Everything has been running fine (for many months!), then yesterday I noticed a red triangle in the notification area of my phone and when I opened the tray it said something like "internal SD card corrupted". I thought it was a bit odd but just power cycled the phone thinking it would clear it. No such luck! I would get past the T-Mobile Vibrant logo screen, then see the flashing 'S' screen for a while, then black screen. Left for 20+mins and nothing changed. If you touch any of the touch keys, the back light comes on (and locally disappears when you touch each button) but that's it!
I rebooted into recovery and tried clearing cache data and rebooting, no luck. I also installed the Android SDK and using ADB from the terminal while at recovery console. The only command that returns anything is "adb devices" and I get
List of devices attached
T95900****** recovery
(not sure if the number masked by *s is individual )
I've tried "adb -d shell", "adb -d shell ls", "adb -d mount /sd-card" nothing... many other adb commands, nothing.
My next steps to recover the phone are to:
1 - clear user data and reboot... and if that doesn't work
2 - use ODIN to reflash stock JI6 and re-synch apps / data from Google (then probably venture into 3rd party ROMs using clockwork / ODIN)
The BIG problem I have though and where I could really use some help, is to find a way to pull my pics / vids off the phone *before* I reflash. Does anybody know if there's a way this can be done? Is there a way to reflash part of the image and keep my pics / vids intact then back them up before a full reflash?
Oh one thing I forgot to mention - during my uneducated 'debug' I tried to boot using a micro-SD card from another phone, and my phone corrupted that SD card too!
Any ideas??
Thanks in advance for any help!
Im not sure abt anyone else but even if I ODIN back to stock (pics & videos are still there) reflash any new rom (pics & videos are still there)
I ve never had anything wiped unless I go in thru my pc and delete items from the phone

+1 on this or you could try android commander.
Thanks a lot guys! Do you know if "clear user data" from recovery console will delete pics / vids? If not, I might try this first.
wont affect it...
OK i tried flashing via ODIN back to JI6 (without repartition). Same thing... then tried flashing back to STOCK via ODIN with repartition and when it comes back up there's some error about failure to wipe data (in red). Downloading Eugene's T-Mo 2.2 now to give that a try... at least ADB is working at recovery console now, but the phone just sits and resets over and over when i reboot normally. Any ideas?
Go to settings sd card & phone storage and un mount the memory you want to wipe and format.
Sd card is the external card & phone storage is the internal card. That will wipe everything.

Am I missing something? I can't get the phone to boot. Settings where?
for the JFD.tar your using the 512.pit file with it right? Now for some reason if I ODIN with the JI6.tar I have to do it with just it..no .pit file, no re-partition. It gives me an error in (2e)recovery if I use a .pit file with it.
Yeah i tried reflashing 'original.tar' (JFD) using ODIN with the 512.pit file and 're-partition' selected. I also tried reflashing JI6 using ODIN with the 512.pit file and 're-partition' unselected. Neither work.
UPDATE - I tried flashing Eugene's unofficial T-Mo 2.2 image using ODIN (with / without re-partition). When recover console comes back up there are a few errors related to memory access issues but when I clear user and cache data and reboot, the phone comes all the way up. On the surface all looks OK but then I notice (via settings / file explorer program etc) that the phone has no internal storage capacity or external SD card capacity! I'm beginning to suspect (one of) the Hummingbird's eMMC/NAND flash controllers. The only puzzling thing is that access to some onboard eMMC/NAND flash is clearly working otherwise it would be impossible to flash / boot into the OS at all. Any ideas? Does Vibrant have a separate on-board eMMC for the OS and then an additional on-board eMMC for 'internal storage' (I don't think so!) Is there some kind of configuration / mounting problem at startup?
Just tried reflashing just the JI6 tar file (in PDA) without the PIT file and it does the same thing. No errors in recovery console but same old black screen as when I started.
One other quick question - where can I find Eugene's Froyo that doesn't brick the phone image? I keep following threads to find it but they all seem to lead nowhere...
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=8
If all else fails and you end up flashing anyways, you can always try using Recuva after mounting the sd card to your computer and getting deleted files back.

@joe98200: Yeah I did that last night. Not much on the ext SD card TBH (apart from Avatar), my files were all on the internal flash and there's not much I can do about that if the phone doesn't see it.
@jmcghee1973: Thanks! I'll give this a try and if this fails too, it's going back to the shop! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8698655&postcount=150

System and user apps accidentally frozen

READ AT THE END OF THIS POST FOR THE SOLUTION
I accidentally used Titanium Backup's widget to frost all system and user apps, leaving mi phone in a infinite boot animation loop. I dont have aNandroid Backup and I would really love to solve this issue without flashing.
I found at Titanium Backup's troubleshooting webpage that I could use this command with adb to solve my issue:
Code:
Type the following command (replace with /dbdata/system/packages.xml if you have a Samsung phone):
busybox sed -n 's/<package name="\([^"]\+\)".*enabled="false".*/\1/p' /data/system/packages.xml | while read PKG; do pm enable "$PKG"; done
but it just says: No such file or directory (yes, I changed /data to /dbdata as stated in the webpage)
Any idea on how to solve this issue?
Thank you!
**EDIT:
This is the way I managed to get my phone working again without having to flash or wipe:
1. Boot in recovery mode and used adb pull command to extract "packages.xml" and "packages-more-backup.xml" from /data/system/
2. Open both files with Wordpad and replaced all protection="2" or "3" lines to protection="1".
3. Also, and very important, replaced all enabled="false" lines to enabled="true"
4. Boot in recovery again and used adb to delete old "packages.xml" and "packages-more-backup.xml" files and push the new ones.
5. Reboot and Voila!
6. Boot once again in recovery mode and fix permissions to avoid any problem.
Hope that this could be usefull to someone else having this horrible problem.
Thank you all!
Checked for that file on my phone, it doesn't exist in /dbdata/system/, but it does in /data/system/
It's probably fixable from the command line with Linux but that is over my head, one option would be to Odin or heimdel back to stock, and start from scratch. You might need a jig to get into dlmode.

I wonder what would happen if you removed the app (its apk) via adb from /data/app. Would it retain the freeze settings? Something to consider trying.
This happened to me. I reflashed the ROM without wiping and all was back to normal

Pretty sure that's not gonna work because the frozen apps settings are at packages.xml file, but I can't access it I don't know why

I got a little too punchy with titanium on my 3 year old original Galaxy tab 7 and froze a samsung system app. Got irreversibly stuck is soft brickland - Tried various methods before giving up and hitting the wipe and reset to factory restore in the system recovery mode. Everything was backed up except recent photos, so it was more annoying than the end of the world.
Odd thing was when it reset to factory, it appeared to do just that, yet when I plugged it into PC and mounted it - the memory was full and all my files and app data files were there - untouched. The apps themselves have gone except one - Superuser is still there, Does Superuser somehow override being reset? and act as a guardian of your data in the event of reset?
Odd. I was expecting to run some file recovery software to a salvage what i could, but viola - it was all there.

ZIP for unfreezing apps
For those, who accidentally frozen important system app: here quick solution without factory reset, reflashing and ADB
It automatically edits files as described in first post.
You should have unlocked bootloader. If no, ZIP useless because unlocking wipes all data.
Download both ZIP's and just flash them via custom recovery (TWRP / CWM)
If first throws error try second and vice versa. 2nd with mark "New" contains newer updater-binary that must be compatible with recent TWRP.
Then all apps will be unfrozen, so phone will boot.
Fix compatible with all Android versions.
Note: also you can somehow (ADB or filemanager in TWRP) delete file /data/system/0/package-restrictions.xml
More correct to edit that file which ZIP actually do, but deleting not harmful too.

Thanks very much for the zip. It worked great
Same Problem
Does anyone have an updated version of that zip? I also froze an app linked to the device and it won't boot, even after factory resetting it. Tried running the zip on my t-mobile GS4 (probably newer than that zip) from the SD card in recovery mode, however it didn't unfreeze it.
Any help greatly appreciated!

1. To flash that ZIP you need have custom recovery (CWM or TWRP), not stock.
No update needed, it still works in this case.
2. That strange. Maybe you not really performed reset?
Double check all and try again.

Yup, unfortunately I did select wipe data on the recovery screen. I am also stuck in an infinite boot up loop and cannot access the phone to install any apps. How can I use a custom recovery to run the zip file if i cannot access the phone? Instructions much appreciated. Thanks again.

ZIP – it's not app.
Again, you need to install custom recovery.
Here link to TWRP and how install it via Odin on PC.
You need place that ZIP on sdcard.
Enter in recovery (don't know how on your model), select Install > find ZIP > confirm > reboot,

Downloaded TWRP with Odin and ran custom recovery without a change after the zip (this must have been a deeper-rooted problem in the OS itself), however in the meantime I formatted the system partition, removing the operating system. Installed Kies and ran the update. It reinstalled the OS and I'm good now. Most stuff was backed up anyways. Thanks guys for your time :good::good:
Which apk is the culprit?
Man, I wish I'd found this thread before restoring my phones internal ROM. Had it rooted and set up in every way I like except removing bloatware.
Using TB, I froze a system apk that shut down my System UI and sent the phone bootlooping. What I'm trying to determine is WHICH apk(s) I froze that caused this. I thought I had researched each one that didn't seem obvious, but I musta missed one or one of the 'obvious' ones wasn't so obvious.

"accidentally" wiped /system and factory reset, help!

I wanted a clean cyanogemod installation on my desire z so I followed this guy's advice:
For a clean install, just boot into recovery, format the /system partition (found under the Mounts and Storage menu) and then perform a Factory Reset/Data Wipe. After that, you are good to install CM and gapps. This does not erase your sdcard, so if any apps stored stuff on there, it will still be there unless you manually erase it.

I didn't think it through and restarted the phone thinking I'd use clockworkmod to reflash the cyanogenmod rom. When I turn it on now it just displays the green 'htc' text on white background, none of the buttons do anything.
I've still got adb etc installed from rooting a year ago, is there a way I can unscrew this up? A million thanks.
Edit: When I start it and go to the loader screen by holding down the optical button, it gives me 'bootloader' as an option but when I select it, it looks like it scans the SD, tells me there is no image and offers to start an update. I can see it with adb but can't get a shell, it says - exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -'. Is there a boot file I can push onto it?
Read one of THESE.
I believe adb push a ROM and gapps to /SD card.

It seemingly randomly booted in cwm recovery after about 30 on-offs and I loaded the cyanogen rom, not a satisfying fix but I'll take it. Thanks for your help.

[Q] Samsung S3 Permanent freeze on home screen

My appologies for this post. Probably this problem is being dealt before on this forum but cant seem to find a solution to mine.
hi, i have a samsung s3 32gb (original stock unrooted).
Problem my space was running low on my s3. And while shooting a video, the space ran out and the phone froze. then i tried to end the video but obviously the screen was frozen.
After that i tried to reboot the phone but it came to the home screen, and couldnt press anything. (i only can drag the top bar down and that's it, it doesnt come back up).
i tried soft reset, didnt work. i tried to boot in safe mode, it doesnt work (it get stuck at the samsung logo). download and recovery mode works fine.
when i connect it to the pc, in device manager i get under Portable Devices (MTP USB device with a yellow triangle and ! mark). obviously KIES doesnt recognise anything connected.
After reading lot of posts, i installed 'android-sdk' and ran 'adb.exe' in cmd.
adb devices shows my device ; i can see all the directories on my phone.
when i try to copy, move or delete any files from the phone to my pc to empty the phone storage, i get this message "device not found".
i dont wanna lose my pics and videos +data (no backup). ANY HELP GUYS???

Try clearing cache and dalvik. If it doesn't work, u might have to factory reset which deletes ur data. Since android-sdk doesn't work anymore and kies too. There is no way to back up ur data. Ur only hope is tat clearing cache and dalvik works.

pictures and videos are stored on the internal sdcard, so they are save even if you decide to wipe your data.
you will only lose your app data and settings
but try first the suggestion from the post above

if you are referring to clearing the cache that is in the recovery mode. i already cleared the cache and still same thing happening.
can you explain 'dalvik' ? what to do step by step if possible
Also you mentioned that android-sdk is not working, (it is true ) but how come i can still see all my phone contents ?

if you are referring to the factory reset inside the "settings" menu in the phone, i think it would be true (the pics & videos wont be affected)
but if you are referring to the reset in the recovery mode. i think that will format everything including my personal data (pics & videos) and return the phone to a factory state (which is how it was new). isnt the OS and data are on the internal sdcard as well ?
Their comments refer to a custom recovery, e.g Philz, where you can clear dalvik and also mount your storage for usb access.
I think you have bigger problems, the phone should not have frozen as you describe and you many have partition corruption.
There are step by step guides on how to install custom recovery in general forum, stickies. It will invalidate your warranty, which might not be a good idea if you need a new motherboard.

GT-I9100 cwm / cm13 bootloop - data recovery?

My galaxy S2 (gt-i9100) was running cm13 for about half a year. Some days ago I let google play update my apps. The result is a bootloop.
I've used the voice recorder to record a lot of notes I need to remember. Is there any way to get those files out from the phones internal storage?
The CWM recovery installed lacks the option to wipe cache / dalvik, which I would hope could get the device out of the bootloop.
When booted into recovery, I've tried adb, but the device is unauthorized.
I think usb debuging was disabled, however, I'm not sure about that.
The ideas I have to solve this are:
1) flash some other recovery that will give an option to wipe cache/dalvik and be able to boot cm13
2) flash some other recovery that will make adb able to pull the files while in recovery mode
3) flash some recovery that is able to copy files from internal storage to sd card
4) factory reset, and hope the files don't get deleted (this is the very last resort)
The thing is that it seems like I'll need to do all installations from SD card via the current CWM recovery. Does anyone know of a suitabel download / howto that can help me get my files off the phone?
If reason for boot loop is Xplore file explorer latest update , uninstall it with developer advices:
http://www.lonelycatgames.com/wiki/xplore/crash_on_cm
I did factory reset twice because of app.
Thank you, Kepsilla. Unless that is an app that is installed with cm13 or gapps, I don't have it installed. But your link gave me hope:
If you have custom recovery on your device (such as TWRP), enter recovery mode, open file manager and delete folder /data/app/com.lonelycatgames.Xplore-1
Click to collapse
That means that if I can install TWRP recovery from CWM recovery, I should be able to access the filesystem. That should open up to two possible solutions:
a) Copy my files from internal storage to SD
b) Delete / modify some files to take all apps I've installed from play store will not start automatically.
Does anyone know of a TWRP that would give any of these possibilities and install on a i9100 using CWM?
(I can't really experiment iwht this - I feel the risk of loosing the files is too high. I have to know I'm going the right direction when I do something.)
Solution was very simple: By holding volume down pressed during boot, the device boots into safe mode - no apps started. Then I could just uninstall the apps that were set to autostart. Reboot and problem was solved.
I came across this way to enter safe mode when googling a error message that started to pop up frequently on my S5 mini. S2 with cm13 appears to have the same way to enter safe mode as S5 mini with factory rom.
