If it were me, I'd spend the extra $300 on a computer with and i5 processor (or comparable) and the other upgraded specs that go along with it. I've found that spending a little more on a desktop usually means that it won't become obsolete in a year. With a decent $600-$700 computer, you'll get a good 4-6 years, with very little upgrades before it feels obsolete.
I bought my computer for 600 and spent about $150 on a pretty decent graphics card, and it's going on 5 years. I can still play new games at pretty decent detail, as well as edit videos (non-HD) without any issues.
If I got an HD camera, I'd consider getting a new computer, just to help speed up the process. However, I'm still very happy with it.
I would lean more toward this one: Dell i5 Desktop The extra 300 would be worth it, just in longevity. From my experiences, the computers that are less than 400, are usually close to obsolete out of the box. Plus they're cheaper (built, not price).

On a completely unrelated topic that is about Android but not the Evo 3D....

A lot of places are dumping Tegra 2 tablets for $299-349 and I would guess this is because of Kal-El being just around the corner. So, what do you guys think. Is it worth picking up a Tegra 2 tablet for $299 or wait until roughly December which is when the new Asus Transformer 2 with Kel-El is supposed to drop (and be presented some time this month)?
I'm waiting for Kal-El. I've been wondering how much they paid DC comics to use that name though....
lol prolly less than they would of paid for super man. I'm personally excited they are droping that low it means I finally might be able to afford a tablet. I think that price is much more reasonable considering a tablet is considered lower on the tech food chain than a laptop but a lot of laptops are cheaper.
the slider looks awesome but I'm waiting on the Kal-el too

Depends on your situation bud. I'm a graduate student and will get great use out of a tablet. I owned a galaxy tab 10.q for roughly ten days. I loved it, and I was sad to return it. But I don't have money to burn, so I decided my money would best be invested in a quad core tablet coming in the near future. Such a tablet would last me much longer than a Tegra 2, based on hardware alone.
If your just looking for a toy, and want to save some money, then tegra 2 might be your best bet.
Not really looking for a toy. I have a pretty big gaming laptop and lugging it around sucks. Especially now that I also have to haul around a car seat with a 15+ pound squirt in it.
I really want something that is zippy with minimal lag, where I can open, edit, and manipulate office crap (word, excel, etc), have a great web browsing experience, watch videos and music without lag, jitters, or any weird crap, and have long battery life. Mainly I would be using it at work where I can't do anything...including personal e-mail, on the computer there, but would have complete open wifi access.
I'm pretty sure I'll wait for Kal-el, but I was thinking of getting a Transformer with dock on sale and then dump the Transformer when the T2 is actually selling which might not be until December or January...just not sure if I am being smart or getting caught up in the "craze."
The Nook Color, while awesome, just wasn't awesome enough.
For the money I would go with the original galaxy tab. I've had my Sprint tab for over two months and still can't put it down, and also gettin.g on contract for $199.99. Even with the single core hummingbird processor, I am currently rooted and have custom ROM with touchwiz 5 and overclocked to 1.2 gighrz on stock kernel and get quadrant scores of 2800-3000+ which is better then any stock tablet out right now. With the custom ROM this tablet is fast, plays every game flawlessly and plays any movie like glass, including blueray movies without converting. So I would recommend the original tab or pay a little more and get galaxy tab 10.1 or the HTC flyer is a very nice tab aswell.

Wasn't Kal-El just an internal code-name that got publicized/popularized by leaked roadmaps and such? If so they probably didn't have to license it at all.

Wow way to be a complete douche bag by noticing my typo of 'reply'. Wow man. I hope you are proud of yourself and I hope your parents are proud of you for turning out this way man. Really. I do.
But who am I trying to make look dumb and how am I trying to make them look dumb?
So....anyhow.... Anyone know of any other manufacturers who are in the process of making Kal-El based tablets? I noticed Acer was on sale for $100 off at a number of retailers. Although that isn't any form of confirmation, it does seem like they are clearing inventory to make room for something...but I could be dreaming a bit. I really liked the design/spec balance on the Iconia for a non-dockable tablet.

View is end of life

Sprint has updated their end of life list... And it now includes the View...
Is this a sign of the death of this tablet as a hole? Flyer is barely sold and the View is EOL...
Or maybe this is pointing to new tablets during the HTC press event coming up...
Check out Phandroid for more details
All electronics have a limited lifecyle. The problem with the Flyer and View isn't that they reached EOL so soon, but rather that:
1) The tablets were priced too high, and so sales weren't as robust as HTC would have liked
2) HTC was too slow in porting Honeycomb. In fact, the Honeycomb upgrade pretty much coincided with the tablets being discontinued. Contrast that with the ASUS Transformer Prime, that was released only a few weeks ago (and is still scarce) and already has an ICS upgrade.
EOL doesn't mean much to me. Heck, it might even be a good thing it they release the complete source code.
I mean my captivate is not only EOL, it isn't even sold anymore at all... I still have ICS on it the Galaxy Nexus even hit retail.
Biggest tragedy imho is if something happened to my flyer I wouldn't be able to get another one..
I think it has more to do with the fact that sprint is moving to LTE and they will stop selling all wimax products this year. They will only have their wimax networks online until 2015. Maybe that's why they gave me mine for $0.99. And no activation fee.
It only means sprint wont sell or support it any longer.. (No updates, patches, etc..)
For all those who scooped up the 1saleaday deal (in early December or the one last week ). This is why you got a great deal (I got 3 of em). Sprint wanted to dump them before they had to sell them for $100. Even if you use sprint.. this means nothing. It will still work and (I'm pretty sure) you can still activate it.
If you plan to use it as wifi only (like me).. then this means less than nothing.
XDA Devs offer WAY better support and upgrades than any carrier.
Don't worry. My team (CypherTeam) will be working on an ICS port as soon as we get a final HC build finished. The view will live on and as others stated, reaching EOL just means that we'll get the source faster and be able to do whatever we want.
It really doesn't come as a surprise to me that it came so quickly bc the specs on the View/Flyer are not up there with the majority of tablets. That being said, with the source we should be able to get this thing running close to 2ghz with no issues.
I didn't pay $99, I paid $0.99 or 99 cents. I couldn't believe it was that cheap. I had to have a plan to get it that cheap, but I have 6 business lines now, so the 15% discount makes the tablet plan end up being free, and I use it pretty much exclusively wifi anyway.

Does that mean view hopefully can be used on LTE NET ?
Yea HTC definitely dropped to ball with the pricing of it.
Our tablet is still awesome, single core but comparative in speed to dual core tablets out there in the market.
I'm really happy with my purchase.. now I wish we had more dev interest around for our devices
Yeah they were priced as high as a dual core 10 inch honeycomb tablet yet only had a single core, gingerbread, and a 7 inch screen. Don't get me wrong I prefer the 7 inch size, but not for the same price as a bigger tablet. I mean honestly with its high clock speed and 1 gig of ram, it feels as fast as any dual core tablet and I think it could of been a hit had htc priced it at say $300 at launch.
Imo I think they shouldn't be so quick to give up on them. I think they should update them to ics and sell them new for $200. I guarantee it would be a hit especially over the craptastic kindle fire!

In all fairness to HTC the tablet out right feels like a 500$ tablet.. which is what made the 300$ price tag so sweet.
My girlfriend ordered one off of ebay just yesterday because her Nook Color just doesn't compare. She uses it too much like a tablet and even after loading CM7 and what not on it, is just tired of constantly fixing issues..
The tablet has a premium feel and if they could make profit at 200$ I would think they would have already priced it at 200$..
The acer A100 is an alternative to the flyer at 250$ and as cheap as 200$.. It sure as hell doesn't feel like the flyer and lacks a lot of the refinement. The problem is now, even at 200$ people would look at the specs and never even try it out before looking down on it.
People are more concerned with specs than actual experiences these days.. (well in the phone world at least.. in the desktop world specs mean a bit more).. It really is sad that because of marketing techniques and the way devices are sold that the flyer gets over looked..
I finally bought my Flyer yesterday. Though there were many choices in the same price range (including iPad 2), I had made up my mind due to the no-nonsense spec.s, solid build & of course, the pen! And I must say, I am thoroughly impressed by this baby..looking forward to being a part of the XDA Flyer community..

I also started with the nook color as my first tablet.
Quickly sold it though because I got a hell of a deal with the HTC flyer.
I recommend flashing the CM7 ROM directly to the emmc/hard disk on the NC. Don't rely on the microSD card.
I had issues too until I did this.

(Q) Should I buy this?

I'm in the market for a $200 Tablet. I can find many Flyers for sale for about $200. There all 16G, and come with the Pen. So I was woundering. Are you Users happy with this device? Or would you rather have another cheap tablet like the Fire or Nook.
Thank You
PS. How's N64oid handle on this Tablet?

I have a Flyer, which I bought (as many people did) around Christmas-time for $200. I use it quite often, to read pdfs, play games, bring with me to use wireless (I don't have a phone). I like it for what it is.
However, that said, I would not recommend dropping $200 for one right now. Maybe if you can grab one for $150 (there was mention of a deal like that in the general forum). Development by HTC on the Flyer has pretty much stopped, with no plans to go forward. There is some nice development going on by XDA members (like Lee's LeeDroid), but beyond that, not much more.
In my opinion, the biggest sign of the problem is with the well-known GPS problem on Honeycomb, which does not allow the device to maintain a lock. HTC is aware of the problem, but there is no fix (nevermind a statement that a fix is in progress). That's a statement of the official development going on. Other problems for me is the hurried HTC Scribe pen integration; some XDA members have created better programs (Quill and Papyrus, for instance), but again, the lack of care by HTC is apparent. The pen feature was rushed, and it shows. XDA members and development are keeping this device afloat, but that's the only reason.
It's a competitive market right now in the tablet market, and unless you have a real winner, then products will be quickly phased in and out. The HTC, as much as I hate to admit it, because as I said, I do make use of mine quite a bit...has been on its way out ever since December 2011 when the prices got slashed.
This is a hard choice for me. I like being able to hack up things, and test out roms. I was told to get this, but I will be getting a new Job soon. Paying much better, and that ASUS Prime is calling me. I just want a tablet for now, and the Kindle Fire seems the best choice. I can complile ICS, and use a 3.0 Linux kernel. :T Why's it so hard to do this. Being a ROM junkie sucks.

+1 to that. I bought the Flyer a few weeks after its release for $599 and don't regret a single penny spent. In the Flyer, you are paying $200 for a $599 high quality tablet. That's a bargain, no matter how you look at it. Buying a Fire, you are just getting a crappy cheapo $200 tablet for $200. The Fire has so many features missing, its not even funny (cameras, SD slot, GPS, microphone, Bluetooth, compass, gyro).
I'm trying to sell mine via Swappa for $230.
PM me if you're interested.
16 GB Wifi only
HTC Stylus
Otterbox case
Screen protector since day one
16 GB microSD card
Original box/USB Cable/AC adapter
/shameless plug
I just bought one and love it. I love the scribe integration
(though dont drop 50-80 on the HTC pen, Get the fujitsu pen $20-30 and does the same thing.)
I will end up putting the photoshop touch app on it, not the free express one.
the 7 in form factor is perfect for me. I had a xoom and liked it for a while but it gets really heavy and hard to hold in one hand.
so the flyer feels much better in one hand, assuming you dont have toddler hands.
the CPU is adequate for anything i could throw at it, and can OC as well.
gpu is pretty good so games wont be a problem. as for n64oid, It would all depend on the game that youre emulating. most devices can handle mario64 and zelda and mariocart. hit or miss really. but its been a while since ive used n64oid (since i picked up a used n64 from my local game store
camera is mediocre. My SGS2 has a better one so i wont use it to take pics or videos but will use the front one for video chat.
im not concerned about GPS issues either, my phone does it.
all in all, I want something that i can use easily when my phones dying and needs to charge, or dont feel like looking at my phones small screen anymore for long web browsing sessions and the 7in form factor and the scribe is def a deal breaker.

Is it worth getting htc flyer?

If its a 32 GB storage version then price is best depending on the functionality though. I am using a htc Flyer myself so in my opinion for writing stuff its great it even have a pen which can be used. It supports up to 720p video playback and the performance is great doesn't lags a bit if its on official ROM i.e. Honeycomb. But it compared to other tablets its heavy because of made of aluminum which feels kind of solid though and I think its a great deal at this price if every thing in tablet working fine. Its solid as Rock !!! Go for It....///

For 100 Dollar it is worth to buy it, but remember there is nearly no more custom rom developement.
The HTC Flyer is still a great Tablet :good:
My recommendation is a big NO..here r the reasons-
1.very outdated device
2.no more custom roms since no developer is involved
3.1gb ram-bit slow compared to newly launched devices
4.touch screen isnt very responsive
And many more....
I too have this device and its getting dusted somewhere around the corner! Believe it or not its in working condition and I didnt used it for bout 3 months!!
So dont buy it even its cheap instead invest few bucks more and get a one with higher specs, so that its future proof too..
〽 ???✌ ?? ????Ⓜ?
Even though it's very cheap nowadays, it isn't very worth it. I got the HTC View, for 99$, really cheap, but there's hardly any support for it anymore (and support for the Flyer is vanishing now..), and it's not too powerful. Still a good tablet in my opinion, but personally, I'd save up for the Galaxy Note 8.
Currently im struggling with nexus 7 2013 32gb with lte and galaxy tab 3 8.0..

Personally, I won't advise you to buy it. Even if I've got the 2 versions, I can tell you that, it's not a good tablet for "Word-typing" at all ! @mannyvinny gave many (excellent) reasons ! Considering what you want to do with your new tablet, any ASUS Transformer with his keyboard and Microsoft Office installed (or any substitute) , would be a better choice  !

The Flyer is not up2date. I miss USB-Host on this Tablet. 4 this money you can buy a better one

Are you going to sell your Nexus 10 to buy the next one?

Just curious to see how many are thinking of selling their Nexus 10 I the next two months to buy the new one.
I don't see what more can they improve truthfully. Battery I think will stay the same (I mean on screen time), screen can't improve more, speakers will be the same, etc.
All I can see improvement in is on the CPU. Maybe even 3GB RAM.
Everything else is not really important. Better cameras? Who cares in a tablet?
Maybe some minor design tweaks.
Overall only the CPU is an important change.
No definitely not. I like its design very much, screen is superb as you said, maybe it needs a contrast tweak but its not that important. IMO tablets and smartphones don't need to get any faster in future, they should tweak battery life and fight heat generation of the cpu/gpu.
The most drastic change would be a new/different system but as the "old nexus" is still a nexus it'll be updated anyway.
Only if theyd reduce weight drastically + even better screen (not ppi but contrast) + better battery life + more appealing design + better thermal management I'd even consider buying a new one...I personally don't need to have the newest octa- dexacore cpu with practically the same battery life or even worse...
No.
From my S-Off BadSeed DNA
I'll have to wait and see what they come out with before making a decision.
No, the current version does all I want at this time. I will wait 2-3yrs before buying a new tablet. That assumes it does not die or that battery deteriates to the point I must buy a new one. If anything I don't like about current tablets is that the batteries cannot be user replaced like laptops.
Do you really think all they can come up with is a new CPU?
And even if its only that, there are people who always want the newest and best thing on the market. If they put a better GPU (we rly need one), 1 more GB RAM (cause 1 is used only by the gpu) and maybe better build quality, it's already a huge improvement.
Add ASUS' keyboard dock and this thing is a dream come true.
Not going to sell it, but my wife has gotten very frustrated with the slow performance of her hand-me-down Galaxy Tab 10.1, so now she wants me to get a new tablet so she can have my Nexus 10. So there's a good chance I'll be picking up the new one soon after release.
jmo but if the rumors are true that Asus will be making the new one, I'm happy with what I got (Samsung).
More than happy with my current tablet and will be sticking around probably until next year. There's not too much they can add that the current one doesn't do. Probably just better CPU/GPU which isn't worth a $500 upgrade.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 4
A better GPU and more ram is all thats really needed. The design is fine, screen and speakers are all great. CPU is fine but I'm sure most wouldn't mind a quad core.
No.. I'm not chasing unnecessary (for me) technology advancements...
LTE support could get me to sell/switch. Also I got the 16GB and I wish I would have got the 32GB. If the new one doesn't have LTE I might try to pick up a first gen 32GB cheap.

I just got mine yesterday off Swappa after studying the rumor mill and comparing the the first gen to my needs. It didn't make sense to spend $180 more for something just because it was new in my case.
No, I will keep my Nexus 10. I am very happy with it and don't need an new One
Yes, I'm selling my N10 to buy the new one.
Having lived with the N10 for a year, I'm not afraid to acknowledge its shortcomings.
The GPU overheats too quickly while playing certain games. I had the N7v2 for a short while and the GPU in that tablet was quicker and cooler and never overheated during the same games I played on the N10.
The CPU could be faster - I'm not saying the Exynos is slow, but when I'm loading desktop sites, it does take a few seconds for every site to load. I don't like mobile sites.
More RAM is always a good thing.
The way I see it, I plan on selling my 32 GB N10 for $250-$300, and then I'll by the new one for $200-$250.

I really can't refer to 7 inches as tablet.just as a big phone. 7 inches for me is a joke, I prefer a phone than a small tablet.
Only as a second tablet I can find it of use.
